    As a Norwegian this is one of our most incredible countrymen. It's not talked about enough how he revolutionised chess as a spectator sport in Norway. Whenever Magnus played world championships the country basically locked down, focused in and talked about nothing else until it was over. He has introduced chess to a new generation in his home country, and purely through his skill and accomplishments. Incredibly proud and awestruck by this man.

    When Magnus talks about him being bad at calculations and finding the best move, I think you have to take that with a grain of salt and understand that he is comparing that particular ability of his to his best abilities. Because even the worst chess qualities in this guy are world class level compared to the field.

    • @ddandymann
      @ddandymann Рік тому +13

      He's also comparing himself to Kasparov who he considers to be the GOAT. Guys like Magnus who are at the top of their field always hold themselves to the highest possible standard, and as far as calculation goes Kasparov is that standard.

      Fabi is better than Magnus when it comes to calculations. Magnus just gives Fabi a lot of problems with his weird moves, and that causes Fabi to burn a lot of time

      @@cmc2110 While I agree that Fabiano Caruana is generally a better calculator than Magnus (and pretty much the rest of the field), I'm not sure what the rest of your sentence is supposed to mean. Where Magnus is unmatched is in his ability for precise, accurate play. Vishy Anand once said that Magnus will always find one of the top 3 engine recommended moves. He may not find the best, but he won't find the 4th or 5th best move either which will likely lead to an inaccuracy. That's where he separates himself.

While I can explain many ways in which my mind seems to work differently to regular people, I'm not convinced that those aren't just models that are low-resolution representations of what is largely an unconscious process.
      Subjectively, it's difficult for me to understand why other people can't see patterns like I do, aren't able to understand things as quickly, and can't see solutions to problems that jump out to me as being quite obvious. It's hard to empathize with other people finding things difficult that seem easy to me, because I don't know what it's like to experience the world with a lower IQ level.

    Like many people Lex seems to be doing the mistake of thinking that chess matches are decided mainly at the table during the actual game. Unprepared Magnus could never defeat prepared Nepo. Never

    @Lex your podcast is really cool, but i have to say, your youtube posts of sequences from podcasts is so much spam, that i have to unsubscribe because of it. Once in a while would have been insightful, but this is a dump of sequences, one might say a maximization for youtube views for cash. I know you're not that type though.. wink wink

      Well, it’s been around for a really long time and even if only like 1% of the population cares about it, when you live in a world with 7+ billion people, that adds up to a ton of folks (many millions), so while you might not find too many chess fans irl, the internet has plenty. But hey, I’m not really a chess fan so maybe one of them can answer it better.

      All sports are meaningless. Football is 22 men running after a Ball. The importance comes from the competition. There are over 100 million people that play chess and Magnus is the best which makes him extraordinary. Also, why would Magnus be a sociopath? He maybe has Asperger but sociopathy?
