    People with ADHD are more likely to have a mutation of the MTHFR gene, which prevents them from properly methylating B vitamins. That can in turn affect one's ability to utilize other vitamins and minerals. The poor methylation of B vitamins is what drives the symptoms of ADHD and associated disorders in people with MTHFR mutations. Addressing the methylation issue will help control symptoms and maybe even put them in remission.
    Speaking as someone with undiagnosed ADHD who has a confirmed MTHFR mutation and trichotillomania (a BFRB that's sometimes considered an expression of OCD).

    For women, I would strongly believe the most common misdiagnoses are Bipolar and BPD. Women are critically under-diagnosed with ADHD and Autism. Instead, doctors are quick to dismiss ADHD and Autism symptoms in women, especially since the medical field has been tailored for and studied almost exclusively men for a very long time. Psychiatrists and psychologists are instead very eager to slap on a diagnosis for a mood disorder or a personality disorder for a woman, at least in my personal and interpersonal experience.

    • @GamingDad
      @GamingDad 4 місяці тому +3

      To be fair inattentive ADHD is more common among women which is also harder to diagnose or easier to misdiagnose it as something else. One shouldn't blame sexism too fast to avoid real sexism being taken less seriously.

      My husband and one kid has ADHD, other daughter was always dreamy, quiet etc. Suddenly failing at 16, problems with concentration, etc. Typical add symptoms. Child psychiatrist diagnosed depression, told us that if the teachers haven't noticed anything until now, she hasn't got ADHD. With ADHD in the family. And teachers with 30 pupils per class with an intelligent kid. Yea.....
      Now waiting for another appointment with an adult psychiatrist, while she's still struggling.

      I actually do have BPD, and I self-diagnosed after extensive research, which told me exactly what you just said- SO many mis diagnosis! My sister was diagnosed with bipolar and I’m all but certain she is actually a self righteous narcissist (got it from our father, hence my BPD too). I can’t believe how much bias still exists in this industry. So much for science leading the way! I do get that a lot of symptoms are shared amongst the plethora of diagnosis but to not even consider some of them bc of gender is bonkers to me. Ps I also have adhd, depression, anxiety, and OCPD. And I figured all of those out on my own, then my doctor validated them. Like he said in the video, adhd usually comes with other disorders.

      @kateashby3066 I was diagnosed with autism and later the psychiatrist suggested that I might have ADD as well, after that the focus lied mostly on the autism part. • @donato286

      It can sometimes be difficult to tell apart bipolar on the one hand, from ADHD comorbid with depression on the other.
      I've done some reading and also my psychiatrist specializing in ADHD explained to me what the differences are between bipolar and ADHD (during my ADHD assessment I was about to say I thought in the past I had bipolar and he actually finished the sentence for me). Here are my takeaways, but because I'm not an expert, I encourage everyone who reads this to take it with a grain of salt:
      - apathy is a symptom of (primarily inattentive) ADHD that is usually mistaken for depression, but there's a big difference (and this is from my psychiatrist so this is actually pretty reliable) - apathy doesn't come with negative intrusive thoughts (or at least not any more than an average person experiences such thoughts). It may be difficult to tell apart apathy from depression when someone has ADHD comorbid with depression, but when they don't (as was the case with me), this is a good way to know the difference between intense apathetic episodes and depression.
      - bipolar depression vs. non-bipolar depression - based on what I read, the bipolar depression and (hypo)mania, although influenced to an extent by external factors, still tend to switch between them without there necessarily being much of external influence (supposedly at random), whereas non-bipolar depression is persistent and there shouldn't be random periods of optimism.
      - ADHD mood vs. bipolar mood - as I mentioned above, I read that the bipolar mood change from depression to (hypo)mania occurs without seemingly much external input, whereas ADHD mood changes based on the environment and circumstances in it, much in the way it happens in most average people. ADHD moods might be heightened (less flat in either positive or negative side of the emotional spectrum compared to average people), but they have a different origin than the moods in bipolar, in that the mood changes in bipolar happen seemingly at random (they just hit the person without there necessarily being obvious reasons to slip into either a positive or negative mood).

    Hey Nick, Loving your content, it's really informative and helpful. My whole life I felt like something was wrong with me, I constantly kept switching careers and relationships cause of random reasons and had severe issues with discipline, motivation and focus. I was always on an emotional rollercoaster, constantly overthinking and overanalyzing everything (even the simplest tasks and emotions) which made me feel like an alien. I got diagnosed with chronic depression and cluster B symptoms by 2 different psychiatrists. I did research about those but something was missing, it wasn't making any sense. A few months ago I came across your content and everything felt familiar, a few days ago I took ADHD test and the score was 95% so I will go for an official diagnosis now. You are doing a wonderful job. Thankyou for your effort.

    Teachers should know more about psychology because some of them are so hateful to children and teens with Add or Adhd and make the subject they're teaching one of the most dreadful parts of school detrimenting the main goal of their jobs which is to educate children. The children will avoid the subject of the teacher they hate the most and its really cruel how parents and teachers blame the child of lazy or dumb when they should know better as adults.

    Thank you for these videos, your insight, and the tedious research you've done for us lol. I've been binge watching your videos as my adhd journey has been a roller coaster.i was diagnosed osed and medicated in 5th or 6th grade where my iq was also tested. I scored in the gifted range and was put in RLC where we got extra assignments and busywork which was beyond frustrating and the meds helped me focus, but I wasn't me. In high school I excelled as an honor student, valedictorian with the world at my feet until it all crashed down around me. In high school, some abuse from my childhood came to light & the psychiatrist said I simply was far to smart and focused to have adhd and diagnosed me with bipolar disorder which I accepted for most of my adult life. After counseling and more therapy several Dr's agree I am not bipolar but very adhd. The biggest struggle I face now is a partner who is a firm believer in mind over matter and you control your brain. I hear constantly uts an excuse to be lazy, bad behavior, and simply not a real condition. I love him so much but this is becoming such a constant struggle between us and he absolutely refuses to read listen to or try to understand it because its not real. I'm wondering if you might have some ideas to help, insight, reference, referral, he'll anything. I'm all ears and know you are busy I'm sure but if you can help I'd appreciate it so nuch. I didn't realize how uncommon it was for OCD and ADHD to come together. I have been diagnosed with both, and see symptoms of both in myself. Though, it makes me wonder, because some of the people I've seen talk about things I do that I've always attributed to OCD, publicly talk about having ADHD. I wonder if it's all actually just ADHD.

    I was addicted to meth for 17 yrs self medicating undiagnosed ADD. There were a few times I knew what to tell a doctor just to get Adderall, but could never take it responsibly. I have a very addictive personality simply because I am always trying to use something just not be completely depressed every day of my life. I also have anxiety. I need extreme amounts of coffee to help the ADD which then caused me to have anxiety and need Kratom to balance it out. I was addicted to opiates and meth for 17 yrs and now only use Kratom and Caffeine so I'm doing much better however, I still beat myself up every single day for not being able to just be happy without using any substances. Wow that's probably the longest comment I've ever made because I actually feel like someone here might be able to relate lol

    Something needs to change here. I don't believe that ADHD is anything bad, it's not a deficit or a disorder of any sort. Absolutely not!
    I don't think there's anything wrong with the hardwiring of your brain, yes it's different I agree with that! Teachers are not aware of how this hardwiring is or what it consists of and they want to put your kids on meds, rather than being very intelligent and recognizing the pre genius child that they're dealing with. Mind you I'm approaching my 60s and I can relate to everything that you're saying - I'm a Gen x and so we never got diagnosed with some form of mental illness because our brains are hardwired in a much more beneficial way. Everybody thought I was dumb because I wasn't paying attention in math class & doing poorly when I was in 6th grade, I got tested and next thing you know I'm doing 8th grade pre-algebra. That just means my brain's hardwired different than all the other kids in my class in fact it's more advanced. And I think ADHD is a poorly fitting label (ADD too) is more of a form of high-level functioning than it is a mental illness that needs to be corrected horrific medication. We just need better quality teachers who know how to recognize children who have a different way of seeing things, what things are most likely to zone in on such as pattern recognition which makes us very good at math, and how we process information and we process a lot more than most people do regardless of our age. Not an illness folks, not at all! Once I was in my 30s I got my IQ tested and it was in the 140s - there needs to be a new name, calling it attention deficit is just bullshit and it makes people feel bad about who they are, like there's something wrong with them when there isn't. I think it should be called massive processing overload dilemma - MPOD. SOUNDS A LITTLE BETTER.

    • @victoriacape7234
      @victoriacape7234 5 місяців тому

      Hi, I'm not the content creator, but I can say there is some difference in treatments for depression vs adhd. Depression treatments are usually SSRIs or SNRIs, medications which affect serotonin levels. SNRIs can also be used to treat ADHD as well as depression, but at least where I am in the UK SSRIs aren't usually used first. It's far more common for stimulant medications to be used as a first line ADHD treatment, which I don't believe are used for depression at all. If you think you were misdiagnosed or have a missed diagnosis additional to depression, please speak to your healthcare provider!

    I'm in my 40s and I'm so glad i was smart* and enough behaved to never go to a psych as a girl in the 90/00s. It would've been brilliant to know all this decades ago but without UA-cam and also back then unless there were exceptionally disruptive annoying behaviours.. smart people weren't ADHD and definitely girls weren't.
    The medications they put girls who actually did had adhd on. That's what's stuffed up those women my age. Misdiagnosis and therefore poison.
    I hate i didn't know earlier but i was born in the wrong time as the wrong person for knowing to ever be of benefit
    I'm grateful I know now. The older generation is smarter with some things, the younger for others. I think we should all listen and learn from each other and forgo judgement. Curiosity over judgement is how relationshipa of all kinds work best. That's just fact that last sentence.
