Another great video Hiram! I have watched mostly all of your videos. One question... would you say you could use the same principles and techniques for the TF60SN trans that is found in the mini cooper? Thanks and keep up the good work!

    Good video Hiram,
I am one of those guys that have been in the general repair for over 15 years and watched a friend of mine rebuild a transmission and i was hooked. From that point i went to school for transmissions and have not looked back. That was 6 years ago. I have to agree with you that transmissions are hard work not only in rebuilding, installing, and diagnosis. But the continuing education that i believe is more difficult then general repair. New units are made constantly and their problems continue as more are electronically controlled. The days of governors, accumulators, and on - off solenoids are over. 8 and 10 speeds are on their way and we need to continue learning them now so we can stay ahead of the game. Videos like these are very helpful.

I dont get a good thump on the k2, I hear a faint tap is that normal? If the bushing spins on the k2 should the air bleed to the lube port or should I get no air passing through?

I picked up an 05 beetle 1.8t/6-speed auto(09G) and it's pealing trans fluid between the engine and transmission.....the car had a constant vibration worth the engine on and the torque converter seems to spin with a bit of a wobble......the torque converter is pained blue so I assume that was replaced before, possible trans rebuilt too.
Trans shifts good and has no faults in the TCM but it leaks trans fluid between the engine and trans and like I said it has a constant vibration. Do you think the converter wasn't seated right and it messed up the front pump seal?
Would I get away with just a seal or do you think the pump is damaged too?
    Please advise.
I appreciate it very much, thank you in advance.

Hi Hiram! Can you suggest me failure to play safe with the mechanic, I have a failure in a jetta special edition 2002 1.8 liter turbo engine, the transmission does not generate the changes only gives forward, back and parking, in addition to neutral but when advancing it does not It generates the change the oil I put 9.5 liters but it does not make the changes, I disconnect the harness and it only advances without forcing, you can advise me that it may be so that the mechanic does not grab me down, I stay tuned, greetings, excellent video, I hope you take the time to answer me I thank you infinitely, greetings, Hiram! from Queretaro, Mexico.

Hi Hiram, I'm having an issue with my mini Cooper r53 year 2006 aisin 6 speed gearbox, which I believe is the same 09g transmission as the one in the jetta. I'm occasionally having this issue as recorded in this video. Could you kindly advise on what sort of issue I'm facing and how can I go about fixing it. Your help and advice is very much appreciated. Link to video is here
    ua-cam.com/video/2diI_4X_kNY/v-deo.html
I am also facing a sudden forward lurch/jump whenever I am in 2nd gear when I press the accelerator approximately 40-50% and above. Around 2.5k rpm it will surge forward and rpm spikes up. I need to tap the pedal lightly everytime I'm in 2nd gear to avoid this issue.. I reckon it would be a bad valve body I suppose? Kindly advice.. Thank you

hey great job! i am having issues with a 09G on a Audi TT, it shifts hard and bumps into a few gears when its hot!, on cool temp it shifts fine and normal, i changed valve body with a Remanufactured from China, and same issues, it got bit better but when hot pass 102 degrees C it shifts hard into 2nd Gear from 1st Gear, jerks bit into 3rd, and on downshifts from 3rd to 2nd it bumps, i adjusted valve B1 clockwise 1 turn, but no improvement, all solenoids 0.58 ohms i am in the process of doing a transgo shift kit, can this be still a valve body issue??? especially only on hot ATF temp it gets sick! cold temp its fine. Any help i would appreciate ! thanks also i did reset and relearned , basic settings for Throttle body and kick down using ross tech VCDS. also used a DS708

Around 24:00, where the general rule of thumb would've gave the clutch pack 0.060 in. clearance, definitely agree that sounds to loose, but it could be worse. Could be like when the 700-R4 was widely used, GM actually had a spec of 0.100 in. clearance on the 3-4 clutch pack. Try to let that sink in for a minute before you bust out laughing 😂

Excellent work. I have a 2008 VW Jetta 2.5 Automatic. When it's cold, it will go into gear just fine, but after 2 or 3 minutes, when it warms up, it just free wheels. It doesn't matter if it's forward or reverse. The guy I got the car from had it stuck in a snow bank and I think he overheated the transmission. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for your help.

  • @robertellsworth2209

You have great info and videos. I am working on a 2007 Jetta with the 09G. issues are shifts fine for 15 mins consistently through all gears. Then when trans temp gets to about 190 degrees shifting into 3rd kinda jumps and shifting in to forth gets nothing. I can manually shift through the gears, when gets to forth I let off the throttle and go to 5th. Then can go back to forth, 5th and 6th are ok. Another issue is trans temp gets to 225 degrees driving around on flat ground. I am thinking a solenoid(s). Any thoughts? As far as I know the trans has never been apart, never been serviced, 93k miles. I did a drain and fill, cleaned pan and new filter, no debris in filter that I could see, fluid was dirty but not burned, usual amount of metal on magnets. Thanks

I built a lot of the old american trans, mostly performance, and a lot that somebody had already been into and usualy wasent quite right if they worked at all. Hiram is very good.always pay attn to everything when you tear it down and look for issues.it's a forensic teardown, just like at the morgue, dead men tell no lies.as do trans owners/shops who effed it up. I was rebuilding trans long before I worked at a trans shop as the R&R guy. then the "build guy" asked if I wanted to learn how.....I told him they were simple, nothing to it.he laughed,I had just pulled a turbo350 out.I told him to scatter it across the table then go to lunch,i would ask questions lator....well when he got back it was back in the car so he could test drive it....after that he took longer lunches, opened his own trans shop(that the owner didnt know about) but he couldent pass the atra test???? he quized me and I pased it no studying, the test was stupid like how many bolts hold on a c4 valve body & other useless crap so you could buy thier arm patch. I reworked many from atra shops. did a lot of racing trans.adding 2&3 extra clutches machining parts etc. Ive never done any fwd stuff or the electronic valve bodys. I would like to learn what it takes to put a electronic valve body trans in a car with out the electronics. like a tiptronic trans in a old bug. or if the diff could be fliped so the engine could be behind the trans.or flip the entire trans&add a sump with suction line&drains so it coule be a rear engine trans. keep up the great videos mr Gutierrez as there are few that can do it right these days or fix somebody else's handy work

I have a question for you Hiram, I have the same trans (09G) in a 06 VW GLI. It shifts good most of the time, sometimes it takes a while to shift or it jumps from 3rd to first around corners. now it has a growling sound while in any gear at a stop, put it in neutral or park and the growl go's away, and it go's away when you start driving. I figured it's either clutches or bearings??

  • @dmorley100
    @dmorley100 9 років тому

@36:50 I don't think it's so much the amount of time that one has been rebuilding transmissions, but rather the amount of motivation one has to further sharpen their skill. Just as you've been called on to help "more experienced" (read, doing it longer) rebuilders, I too have been called on at times to help "more experienced" driveability techs with problems they had. Of course, I trained more than they did, whereas they quit training all together.

Your videos are great. I've learned a lot from them. You are very meticulous with your work and I love the level of detail you give in your videos.
Is there an easy way to test the input speed sensor to see if it's bad before replacing it? I'm getting the input speed sensor code but some people say dirty transmission fluid can cause that as well. I don't want to reassemble the transmission just to find out I'm still getting the sensor code. Also, do you have a recommendation of where to buy them? They seem quite pricey.
