I was a big Dragon Warrior fan growing up in the NES/SNES era. This game was featured in Nintendo Power as they tried to build and gauge interest in releasing it on the SNES stateside, which of course they never did. Those import game store ads listing Dragon Quest VI tempted me for a long time despite its $96? price tag (like $188 today). Games like this not being released in America contributed to me wanting to learn Japanese. I ended up doing a homestay, a study abroad, minoring in Japanese, and now I've lived in Japan for several years. At this point I own the game, the soundtrack, and even a CD Theater retelling of the story, and yet I've still never gotten around to making my way through this game.
Finally someone with different opinions on this game that aren't just "it's the black sheep of the series" presentation-wise this is the best of the snes dragon quest offerings and people aren't ready to admit how close in comparison this game and final fantasy VI are when it boils down to comparing the franchise releases side-by-side.
Dragon Quest VI always felt unfinished to me. At the beginning you have this big story sequence and quest to defeat Mudo, where he's really built up and there's some cool stuff along the way. But then after that's all done, you're just told to wander around and defeat whatever evil. There's one point later on where some demon guy is talking about the 4 great archfiends, and how Mudo was one of them, but then he also mentions how some other two guys who I already defeated were also a part of this group. I would have known Mudo was one of those "archfiends" without anyone telling me just because of how much he was built up, but then meanwhile I beat those two other guys without even knowing who they were. If every archfiend was given a sequence as great as Mudo's, I think this game would be much better.
Dragon Quest VI had big shoes to fill after DQV which is a lot of people's favorite of the series. I think DQ6 is an alright game it's pretty fun, but falls a little short of DQ5. 5 is my personal favorite of the series so I am biased in that regard though. In the SNES era DQ6 was a major graphical improvement over it's predecessors and the job system was a nice addition to the gameplay. I think the thing with DQ6 though is that the story is kind of weak in the game compared to DQ5. I think the gameplay of 6 is pretty fun and the music is definitely good, but the story definitely kind of was a weak point of the game. I agree with you too it's definitely one of the more challenging DQ games. Some of the big story fights in the game are pretty tough. Overall, I'd say DQ6 is a cool fun game it is worth playing for sure, but it does have some flaws here and there.
DQ IV went item heavy too and the vault gets full of 'key items' too. Even DQ3 did the vault system (only gold in remakes as the bag was introduced) and i had at least a few pages of things to store.
This is my favorite of the two SNES Dragon Quest games. I played Phantasy Star III long before I played Dragon Quest V (I have the DS releases of IV, V, and VI but got VI first then V and IV later while I played Phantasy Star III not long after it came out in the US). I was expecting who I married in Dragon Quest V to be a huge impact and never entirely got over the disappointment of how little it meant to the story.
I played through all of the DQ games last year, and I think Dragon Quest 6 (Android release of the DS Port) was probably one of my favorites. I think the issue with the game is that a lot of the more interesting story developments (getting your memory back) and gameplay mechanics (the advanced vocations) are all on the back-end.
One of my favourite DQ games honestly. Know it has its flaws but there’s so much content on it + the feeling you’re having a fever dream while you’re playing haha. Question though, doesn’t the king summon Nokturnus instead of Mortamor? I was thought it was super cool how you have this parallel story that you can optionally go for it post game. Great video btw.
After finishing the video I am glad to say that you actually have me interested in finishing my playthrough of DQ6. Im at the point where I might be getting the flying bed? Idk i think there is a cliff I need to climb? Maybe? I can’t remember exactly since its been a while since I last played.
NGL I feel like an idiot for missing a lot of the actual parallels with locations and NPCs in DQ6 lol. It took me a while to connect the dots on why the mini medal castle showed up so close to the starting village as well.
The last boss (main story) was Deaththamoor (7:59), not Dark Dream referenced here (15:20). Dark Dream is the bonus/post-game boss. DQVI is charming in its own way. Personally I'd say the weakest of the 4-5-6 trilogy, but still fun like your review rightfully conveys. Edit: Ah I get what you mean last, as I just finished your DQV review and you point out how Esturk is the big baddie (postgame) there. Great vids.
Dragon quest 6 has more depth on the ds from what I have been told. I'll check it out. Love the greek stuff you throw in there to spice up the narrative
I don’t think the real world you backed down from his job, but was separated from his spirit (the one you play as) by mudo at the beginning of the game. Then Tania found him with amnesia and took him in and adopted him as a brother, which is why you’re really siblings in the dream world, because it’s her dream
This review was a bit disappointing, if I'm being honest. I guess I can't expect everyone to share the same opinions as me, but I was hoping that you would go a little bit deeper into the rich story and characters. A lot of people seem to miss the subtext of this game because they see it appear low on "best of" lists and go into it assuming that it will be forgettable. I mean, come on. The backstory to the flying-bed? That's very surface level, but even that shows that this game has more to offer than what everyone wants to assume. I highly recommend checking out the Dragon Quest VI - 1995 Developer Interview.
The bed part was a highlight, climbing that wall was a unique dungeon idea. The backstory wasn't much more than the kid died and wanted the courage badge though right?
I never let the hype dissuade me, I definitely want to play Draqon Quest VI. The problem is that the only console I own is the Switch and that only has Dragon Quest I-III and XI as well as a few spin-offs. I would happily buy dragon Quest IV-IX as well as an offline version of X if Square Enix would just release them for the Switch.
Emulate them until you'll be able to buy them. I mean, you plan to buy them either way, so how about just emulate them first, and then buy the games when you get the chance?
@@KeyleeTamirian You have a point, I just greatly prefer playing games on a console. Also I have been trying to support only official releases of games. I have access to so many now that my manager gave me her old PlayStation 4 after getting a PS5 for Christmas and getting a deal on a Wii U that I might be able to keep myself occupied until the rest of the Dragon Quest series is actually released on a system.
Offline X IS on the Switch.......... in Japanese. I'm in Taiwan and have seen it in stores. I think it may be available in Chinese too but I don't remember. I have all the Trails series games staring me in the face over here, and recently nearly every fuckin' game that comes out (despite definitely being available in English, even in other parts of Asia) is Chinese only, or Chinese and Japanese. Not long ago just about every Switch game sold here had English. Super annoying. Ys Nordics has been on the shelf for what feels like a year, but with no English.... it's so annoying. I think language should be free "DLC" and you buy whatever physical edition you find and get language downloads online if the cart doesn't have them (assuming they exist obviously) I've been on the lookout for a physical English Super Robot Wars 30 for so long now...
Only talking about DQ. I like 6 better than 7, just because the more modern 7 are long and PSX version was long with horrible load times. Not sure if my ratings are based on the Dejapp translations or the English release, but I actually like 6 better than 5 but they are most likely close for me. Maybe I need to go back and play 5 though.
This game looks really cool! I've never played a Dragon Quest game before, shame this one never came out in English officially. I was watching this and thinking oh that enemy looks like a fat version of Cell from DBZ, oh that guy looks like an old man version of Buu. Took me a few minutes to realise duh, a lot of the designs were done by Akira Toriyama. Great video too btw
The soundtrack by Koichi Sugiyama is simply next level. The dialogue in the unofficial fan translation is often poor. Agree that encounter rate is overly tedious. On DS enemies have 75% HP and give 120% XP. This rebalancing takes a lot of the challenge away. The side quests are plentiful adding depth to the game.
DQ6, 7, and 8 weren't my thing. Although, DQ8 had a lot of flash that I enjoyed. But I found it difficult to stay engaged. The first five DQ games are some of my favourite games ever, though. And I might have a bias toward DQ9, it was just as much to do with who I was playing it with. I haven't played any others yet, but I did buy 11 like 2 years ago.
Personal favorite Dragon Quest is Dragon Quest X and it’s not even close but in order to make it fair for the other games I will say my second favorite game is probably Dragon Quest 2 (specifically the snes remake or the iOS version) though 1 and 3 are strong contenders as well as DQVIII. But none of them are close to being as good as DQX and no argument in existence can change that.
Had a hard time to decide if Dragon Quest 6 or Dragon Quest 7 is my favorite in the series. In the end Dragon Quest 6 finally won me over. As much as great DQ7 is, DQ6 is average 30-40 hour game compared to 100-120 hour of DQ7. And there is no need to search for stone tablets.
Lmao you are cracking me up. I actually don't think this game sucks, but somehow I enjoyed Dragon Quest IX more wtf. This game just feels like the most confusing whatever main series game of the bunch. I played the SFC translated version some but only ever made any decent progress in the DS version when I got a 3DS and felt I should try it again and dropped playing it again. I could ramble some more but got recommended this video and here is my comment.
SNES version of DQ6 is the only way to play it IMO. Square Enix's localization work for the series since DQ8 is hot garbage. Especially the DS remakes since reading phonetic accents in text makes me want to stab my eyes out.
I've just beaten DQ6 yesterday and yep, your review is true to that. Still, it's fun and ambitious game, but nowhere near the greatness of 3, 4 or 5. P.S. It's nice to train somebody to thief just to get the almighty Sneak skill which allows you to skip battles for 0 mp 😊
Played DQ6 first on Ds and i think it was ok. Never finished it though. Don't know why so many people dislike it. One thing I personally don't like are the character designs of your party members.
DQVI is...I mean, I guess it's fine. It's a playable JRPG, alright. Sure. Yet somehow I pretty much instantly forget everything about its world and characters the instant I'm not actually playing it, which is damn weird considering how unforgettable entries like V and VIII are. It's like it flashes you with the MiB memory eraser thingy during the end credits.
I rank DQ6 very low on my ranking. Above 1 and 2 but right next to 7 and below the rest. It's just pretty forgettable, the character designs are colorful and whacky looking but don't ask me to tell you anything about them!

If you don't want to dig up an old nintendo DS and an expensive DQ6 Cart the official ios/android release isn't bad.

I'm fond of DQVI, the job system is great, and the two overworlds concept is very interesting.
It's top 3 for me. I think the OST is the best in the series and it has the best mysterious energy and monster design.
A new Jason Graves review ? I'M IN !!
Dragon Quest VI always felt unfinished to me. At the beginning you have this big story sequence and quest to defeat Mudo, where he's really built up and there's some cool stuff along the way. I’ve heard this described as “aggressively average” which sounds about right. It is my favorite in the series flaws and all.
Got the news about Toriyama, while watching this. RIP
I got the news when I saw this comment. Damn
A review made by someone who loves games. Keep on rocking.
3/10, not nearly enough Sears content.
sears was great
That was so fun.
It just occurred to me. Are the DQ 1, 2 & 3 remakes on the list?
DQ IV went item heavy too and the vault gets full of 'key items' too.
Even DQ3 did the vault system (only gold in remakes as the bag was introduced) and i had at least a few pages of things to store.

yes it's Nokturnus
Nooo. I'm late. Im excited for this. The Dragon quest 5 review is why i actually played it and was able to experience a gem of a snes rpg.
Loving your videos. Thorough and entertaining. Thank you!
After finishing the video I am glad to say that you actually have me interested in finishing my playthrough of DQ6. Im at the point where I might be getting the flying bed? Idk i think there is a cliff I need to climb? Maybe? I can’t remember exactly since its been a while since I last played.
yes axactly, youll need to find a special stone up a cliff and bring it to Mats ( I think) parents in clearvale
NGL I feel like an idiot for missing a lot of the actual parallels with locations and NPCs in DQ6 lol. It took me a while to connect the dots on why the mini medal castle showed up so close to the starting village as well.
Nice Pink Floyd reference around 11:36. Animals ftw!
Another great review - thanks bro!
I played that fan translation like back in 2000 or 2001. So no, no other English translations existed when that came out.
Pink Floyd reference was unexpected, but appreciated. Even fitting.

My life is literally dragon quest and I'm ok with that
"The old man did a boogie2988" that had me in bits! Sooooo funny
Vibes always caught me the most. A mysterious, little gem of a game. Def my favorite DQ, played until the newest :))
two videos one day?
The *only* UA-camr I get excited to see has uploaded 🎉
6 is probably my 2nd favorite in the series. 2 being my favorite. 9 or 5 being third. Love the whole series. Even the spinoffs

tbh this game sounds far more interesting than anything I've seen Final Fantasy's mainline games do, and yet it's a low-rated Dragon Quest?
