By far my favorite aspect of Sonic Battle had to be Emerl. As a character, he was a masterclass of a 'Deus-Ex-Machina' archetype of character His relationship with Sonic, Cream and the rest of the cast was something amazing. You really cared about *the entire cast* due to their relationship with the Gizoid I also have to say that the artstyle is something that has aged miraculously well and there is a reason why the fandom still used Sonic Battle sprites when creating fan-made content - *they were peak design* and I really wish Sega would return to this art-style, if not - potentially _modify_ it
To make a correction, fighting Chaos is not necessary to reach the Death Egg. Doing so is what unlocks him in the other mode, not beating Emeril's story. What viewers also might like to know is that there are fights in this game that can be quit out of by pausing and choosing to quit, and the game will still progress. These are: The fight in Sonic's story with Tails and Emerl at the lab The first fight in Tails' story The fight with Rouge for the lab pass in Tails' story Emerl vs. Knuckles in Tails' story The Rouge story fight where the player must avoid getting hit Two of these do have different dialogue after doing so, meaning these were intentional, the others I am not sure about.
We need a sonic GBA collection similar to Sonic Origins. Including Advance 1-2-3, Battle, and Pinball party. And maybe the portable chao garden for SA2B. Add in bug fixes and Improvements, Fully animated openings between each game, Concept Art, Other extras. It would be perfect!
For such an obscure game, Sonic Battle has cast an unexpectedly long and large, ahem, _shadow_ over the Sonic mythos The most obvious connection being to Sonic Advance 3, but let's not forget Sonic Chronicles built upon it as well, as did Sonic Generations reference it (unless I'm mistaken), and now we have the Emerl plotline being adapted in Sonic x Shadow Generations (or at least the anime and manga it comes with).
6:59 Fun fact, some official products spells the name G-merl. Like a Sonic card matching game. Maybe the name was probably one of his intended names, but info on it is so minuscule like Gemerl and Emerl in general.
Yes! I have been waiting for this one for a long time Coop! Easily one of my favorite Sonic games. From the artwork, to the story to the catchy tunes - there is just so much to like about this game Please continue the series! I would love to see you cover the Rush series of games (hopefully soon?!) Great Review! My favorite Sonic reviewer out there! 💖
I never got to play Sonic Battle myself, but it’s always looked like an interesting game! I’m no fighting game professional but I think I’d enjoy this game pretty well. I love good storytelling in video games, so that alone would definitely hook me into the game even if it means enduring repetitive gameplay. I wasn’t aware of Sonic Battle’s intended simultaneous release with Sonic Heroes-however, it makes sense when I remember that the back of the GameCube version’s manual features a Sonic Battle ad! I believe both games released on the same day in the US, if not just a few days apart from each other. Another great video of yours, Cooper! Excited for the next one.
Bro definitely one of my favorite sonic games of all time. The story writing was elite. I always wish that they made this story a lot more better in modern times.
Thanks for covering this game, I hardly knew anything about it so it was interesting to learn about, and it seems like you've done a good job of giving us a taste of what it's like to play!
Probably my favorite of the sonic games. Which isn’t saying much since I admit I’m just not good at the other games. Oh, and considering I have heard it mentioned in other places I think boxercise may be real.
Keep in mind Battle was actually released before Heroes by a month in Japan whereas in North America by 1 day. Which really goes to show despite in game dialogue for the chronological release in terms of narrative due to lines like Rogue mentioning how Chaos Gamma looks like Omega and given how Shadow knows all of if not most of his memories especially Maria and Gerald that Battle does in fact have to take place not only after Heroes, but Shadow the Hegdehog game too and the fallout after it because Shadow is clearly struggling with how to move forward given his tragic past with finding his purpose/sense of clarity onward as his lines to Sonic in saying that no both himself and Emerl need to be destroyed for the good of mankind and him willing throwing his life away without any regard for it comes off as suicidal which is why Sonic is even shocked by Shadow not being swayed by his argument of him and Emerl having hearts especially due to Shadow's sacrifice in SA2 because he had almost destroyed the world against Maria's wishes and so he knows that he could very well go astray again and that very fear is reflected by Emerl who mirrors him and knowing or subconsciously of the threat Emerl poses. That's also why Shadow's iconic line in 06 is given further weight to it because Shadow wasn't just going to throw his life away anymore in standing firm on nor return on a path of revenge.
It also helps now that the officially licensed by Sega video Something About Shadow the Hedgehog shows off Battle with Emerl's appearance right after Shadow's game too.
@@Gyrokun Yes, due to the reasons listed as otherwise would not make cohesive narrative sense and thanks to the youtube vid I mentioned that Sega licensed putting a pin in it.
2:20 I didn't know Sonic the Fighters came to Xbox. I wish it got ported to other consoles that came after it. Sonic Gems and Mega Collections were classics for sure.
You missed something in your review. You have three different specials you can assign to preform on the ground, in the air, and be immune to. Those specials are physical, projectile, and trap.
12:43 Sometimes they aren’t even hard, they’re just unfair. I only was able to beat Knuckles’ hardest battles was by exploiting the game’s specials. Where I run around dropping bombs. And if any of the opponents are immune, I look for an opening to use his arial dig move.
I love this game. I played so much of it back when I had originally got the game, all the back when it first came out, in 2004, but for some reason, it's gone. I don't know what happened to it. I don't know if I lost it, misplaced it, got it stolen or gave it to a friend. It's a mystery. Oddly enough, I still have the instructions booklet but I believe I threw out the game box itself. That was foolish on my part. I wish I had kept game box itself and still own the game, but it's alright. Fast forward to 2023, I had ordered Sonic Battle from Amazon since I wanted to play this game from my childhood so badly. It arrived and I own it to this day. I've been playing it since then and have probably logged in as much or close to as many hours as I did back when I first got the game in the early 2000s. Needless to say, I've been having a blast. When it comes to collecting Emerl's skill cards, I believe I have completed/I am currently around 83%, when I lasted looked. That means I am, roughly, missing about less that 17% in getting all the cards. I unfortunately can't accurately check the percentage since the R shoulder button doesn't work properly on my Gameboy Advance Sp. (I had my Sp since 2002 so it's natural for the handheld console to be worn out after being played for so many years. And since my R button doesn't work, I can't use any special attacks the characters have or any other games that need the button) It's impressive that I have that high of a number when it comes to the skill cards since I don't remember how far I was when I first played this game decades ago. I had been grinding away so much from 2023 to 2024 that I stopped worrying about the collecting all of Emerl's cards because it was becoming exhausting and tiresome. I focus more on having fun playing the Battle mode in Single Player, nowadays. Also, yes, I do have the secret cards you get when you enter the secret passwords at the Sonic Team building, in Emerl's story, in case anyone was wondering. I think at this point, the only way for me to get all the skill cards is to cheat, which sucks because I want to get it the legitimate way, and I don't have a device to cheat either. Since the cards are luck dependent, which I don't like, I wish that rings was used as in-game currency to buy all cards. That might have solved the needless, monotonous, tedious grinding. The VT a.k.a Virtual Training in Emerl's story is interesting. In theory, I like it. In execution, I don't like it. So, it's essentially a gauntlet of sorts. Fight until you drop. It's 1 vs 3, every time or you vs three others. All right, cool. But, considering how quickly things can get out of control when it's you vs three other opponents, friendly fire is off/their attacks don't hurt each other except only you, can gang up on you, easily overwhelm you and knock you out, even with a durable and high powered Emerl, it can get really tough. The secret multi-combo skills Emerl learns that you unlock with those secret passwords, does come in handy, however, having to always spam it to win, you also have be on your toes, constantly, and pick the perfect spots to use the attack, which are going to require hit and run, fight or flight tactics. You can even say the Virtual Training pretty much forces you to think about every move you must make instead of just fighting. With so much thinking and constant pressure to fight perfectly, especially in the higher/later rounds, you're bound to make a mistake and your opponents will capitalize and punish you for it that might force you to start over. That sort of dampens the spirit of the title, Sonic Battle, because isn't the purpose of the game to Battle and not think or worry too much? To me, some opponents are scarier to fight than others in the VT. Gamma is scary, to me, because of his equippable meltdown and air meltdown cards (Not the one when you K.O him and he says, "Initiating recovery mode". That can be blocked at the right time) that he may randomly use and you can never predict if he has it on or not. It can be blocked, if you set your guard to guarding power at the start of a fight. But, in reality, not just gamma, yet, everyone you fight, is a major threat. Also, when you take damage, you will need to run away and find some space from your enemies to heal quickly. I recommend having E-102's a.k.a. Gamma's heal skill, Recovery mode, because it helps (tremendously) recover a lot of damage in a short amount of time, if you have it. Getting the skill, since it's luck based, is another story. What I don't like is how the your life system lies to you. You only have one life no matter what your number is while your opponents number is always accurate. For example, if it says you have two lives it is WRONG. You have just one. If you get K.O.ed even once, no matter how much progress you made, you have to start all over. Coupled along with you can't save either. Also, if you quit at any time, or your battery dies, back to the start you go. Oh, you even technically "start over"once you reach the set amount of K.O's but only after getting Emerl's ultimate skill. For every 5 ko's you get, the first go around, you unlock one of Emerl's ultimate skills. 10 ko's another new skill. 15 ko's, another new skill and I think so on and so forth. By the second go around, for example, If you already get 5 and 10 knockouts, as you try to reach 15, you will get regular random skill cards, instead of ultimate cards, which is absurd. I would rather have Emerl's ultimate skills because that is the only reason I'm doing Virtual Training. I believe the highest I've gotten was 10 ko's because getting to 15 is extremely difficult. I also don't know how far the K.O system goes. It's probably a ridiculously high number. I don't mind gauntlets. The problem is how the Virtual Training is handled. Overall, I still love Sonic Battle. I wish it had a proper sequel to improve the Virtual Training mechanic and how I prefer to acquire all skill cards by purchasing them, with rings, you can by fighting rather than getting them by RNG.
Multiplayer wise, I can attest to it that its a good time with anyone cause I did it with my younger sis a few years back, and prior to having another cart we were just doing the minigames because Battle (alongside the rest of the Advance games) are one of the few GBA games to support download play, so we'd just randomly choose one on a dice roll and go from there. By the time I got a second cart, it was a cart that was cheated to all hell and back with a max total of cards and skill ups.
seeing this game again reminded me how elementary school in 2004 was shitty such that i couldn't bring my gameboy Monday-Thursday even just during breaks. prison, much? i really f'in wanted to show this game off to my friends at the time !! wtffffff
This game REALLY needs a mod that cuts down the padding of the story mode. Like all the times where it says you need to get 10 KOs, and then having to fight that same enemy again for another 10 KOs. Like lower that to 3 max. Then the game gets bumped up a full letter grade.
As much as I absolutely hate Amy's writing in this game (as well as many of her depictions around this time), I do like the idea of her training. After all, she one of the (if not THE) least flashy characters in terms of powers, so it makes sense that she'd try to get better. I mean, sure, her reasoning is rather weak, but it'd be cool if this aspect was at least alluded to in a future story. Maybe have the reason revised as her wanting to be as helpful she can be with her friends (and if questioned how she can keep up with people much faster and stronger, she'd answer she can't, but that's no reason to not improve her capabilities). I don't know. I'm just trying to find a silver lining that could be implemented going forward.
