Fun Fact: So Kirk revealed during Anime Expo that pretty much while recording for this, it was the first time he got Shadow's ENTIRE back story and motivation, which in turn motivated the direction he took for Shadow's performance in this game.
So apparently the remaster does have life system but you have to enable it in the options, Just look for the part that says " Challenge tries"... I know that's a stupid name. They should have just called it "Lives"
I was so happy with how Shadow Generations turned out, hopefully this is a sign of things to come but then again we thought that with OG generations and afterwards we got Lost World, Boom and Forces (no disrespect to anyway who likes Lost World, Boom and Forces)
I do think there is a difference that exists between the two time periods. Sonic has for the first time actually had game build off of the last instead of throwing things at the wall or hyper correcting something. Shadow Generations feels like the next logical step from the concepts Sonic Frontiers.
Shadow Generations being as polished as it is could spell for a positive future for Sonic remasters! It’s about time Sonic Team got on their A game after over half a decade of… all that other stuff. Looking forward to your next video!
Loved this review! Really showed how much more nuanced you’ve grown since Cooper’s Perspective, it’s always enjoyable to hear someone passionate about a series totally geek out about a game they lake. And man, what a love letter this game was to the fans. Feels good to finally get a good remaster after many a flop - I hope Sonic Team can keep this ball rolling.
The Sonic Jam Legacy skin IS in stores already tho? Heck, I saw it reach Steam's DLC list on release, and that hours before I got the subscription mail lol
I wish they could’ve added two more levels (from Shadow the Hedgehog and Unleashed) and one more boss fight (against Infinite). Other than that really enjoyed Shadow’s overall adventure.
Sonic Colours losing its save slots in the remaster and Generations gaining save slots in the remaster is so funny Anyways I love the addition of Chao to Generations, these things made me look on routes and alcoves I never even knew existed for some, and the others were very well hidden and blend in a lot with the environment.
Shadow Generations does a surprisingly good job of making the whole Black Arms plot point of Shadow’s backstory feel way less out of left field than it really was when it was introduced
Since they reimagined Kingdom Valley for Shadow Generations, I would really love to see a reimagining of Tropical Jungle if they ever make a Sonic Generations 2 at some point.
6:57 I wouldn’t really say “fix” more so overhaul as Classic Sonic was made the way he is in Generations, and the game was built around his gameplay. While a more accurate Classic Sonic can work, I don’t think it would fix his gameplay as I don’t see think it’s inaccuracy was much of a problem. And if they do that, similar to the story rewrite and what they actually did for the Legacy controls, I wish they could just give you the option of Gens Classic Sonic and Retro Classic Sonic.
I haven't played all the stages and boss battles in Sonic's portion yet but I did get to and beat the final boss in Shadow's portion. I've been liking all of it a lot, (game of the year in my opinion) and the fact that ever since release day the Digital Deluxe bonuses were available to be sold seperately instead of making us wait, plus I tried my best to get all the skins and a pre-ordered Switch version. Space Colony Ark and Kingdom Valley are my favorite returning stages. I'm glad that they improved that Biolizard boss battle and that the background music is a remix of both "Supporting Me" from the original Biolizard battle with some remix of the begining part of the music from "Live and Learn" mixed in! In the original 06 Sonic's main enemy was (as usual) Eggman, Silver had Iblis as his main enemy but Mephiles was Shadow's Pain-in the-butt main enemy in that game, so likely that easily made him be an option of who SEGA could possibly bring back in that game as a boss for Shadow. Along with the fact that soo many old fans have been talking online about wanting him to make a return, so they possibly were aware of that too and thought that that would make him be a good choice. Those are my thoughts of what the main reasons of why they brought Mephiles back possibly are.
I heard from a little bird that around the time the Sonic 3 movie releases, Sega was gonna put in a level that is based on real life Tokyo. What better way than to make that level design seem like Westopolis from Shadow '05.
I'm guessing that the main reason Shadow '05 doesn't have a level is because the game doesn't have a level that's capable of being considered *THE* level. In other words, there wasn't really an ability to bring any back because there isn't any one stage that's unique and iconic enough to warrant it. Sure, Westopolis is the first level and the one you play through 10 times, but it isn't exactly iconic in the way that Final Rush or Kingdom Valley are. And it's kinda hard to make something that's mostly brown and gray fit the surrealism inherently present in the series. In other words, there just isn't a Shadow '05 stage well-received, unique or iconic enough to have it come back. Lava Shelter, Digital Circuit or Black Comet woulda been nice tho-
Cryptic Castle, Sky Troops, Black Comet, Final Haunt, and either Digital Circuit or Mad Matrix would have been perfect additions if Westopolis wasn't a factor. I'm praying we get DLC for Shadow Generations beyond the Shibuya level we're getting next month.
@@smashmaster521 A good chunk of those suffer from bogus missions, and Mad Matrix is a bit notorious due to its bomb gimmick. Really the only one that's well regarded in general out of all those is Digital Circuit. But yeah, GIVE HIS OWN GAME SOME REPRESENTATION. (Black Doom's not cutting it this time)
@@playbossthebest936 Agreed. Definitely the most memorable, but Sky Troops is tied to one of THE most confusing paths in the game, and Black Comet... I don't even remember which path that is.
Shadow Generations feels like it utilizes the idea of Black Doom better than Shadow The Hedgehog did. If only because the whole morality angle was shelved in favor of giving Shadow gameplay-alterations that make his gameplay more engaging than regular sonic (plus he just looks cooler). Compare that to just having mediocre run and gun gameplay and awful driving mechanics, and honestly I think they fully got the memo on doing Shadow justice on a basic level.
27:06 It would be cool if they retconned GENS 3DS version of events, by establishing that Black Doom was manipulating with Time Eater’s powers in secret when Eggman had it, using said powers to create what would be the set up of events for Shadow getting stronger and stronger just for Doom to take over his body. But thanks to Eggman sending out the Time Eater early because Sonic was at the Birthday Party earlier than he expected him to, and wanted to start his plan immediately. Black Doom didn’t have enough time to prepare and fully contain enough of Time Eater’s powers for himself temporarily, causing his planned set up for Shadow to be infused into Sonic’s white Space. So the Biolizard and Doom’s favorite level are in Sonic Gens because they originally were from Black Doom’s set up for Shadow.
Tbf with the new mephiles voice i like to think he is more desperate because when he tries to get in shadows head like 06, shadow knows what and who he is compared to when mephiles, in 06, liked to torment shadow and make him doubt that humanity will turn on him. I would love to see him as a main villain again but probablly wont happen
(Some Time stamps because I might comment a lot) Also, if there’s somethings I don’t help clarify Coop on, it’s because I assume someone else probably done it. 6:31 I disagree about the original game being unpolished in the original. Most of the iconic and common glitches in the original are still in the remaster, so I’d say it’s more so the Series X frame boost than anything. 13:41 Like I said, I’m happy that they didn’t remove them since they aren’t game breaking, nostalgic for me, and iconic for the game. (Glitches wise at least) Besides, if a glitch is fun and doesn’t ruin the game or your save, it’s fine to preserve. 8:26 I wish they added Ryan’s voice lines. It’s not like they have to pay him to use them. 9:20 They actually weren’t removed, you can turn them back on in the options menu. 11:38 What are you talking about? We already saw he was kidnapped in the original by the Time Eater. The twist was that he was working with Modern Eggman, not what he looks like. All the remaster did is have us see him physically, and I honestly like it more than just a black ball. (Unrelated to the last time stamp) Hot take, I have no real problems with the references in the rewrite. They all either make sense, are accurate, or doesn’t matter. (Yes, Tails has been to Green Hill as Drift and Prime are canon. And as far as Ian Flynn is concerned, Prime takes place after Advance 3, while I treat some things not being canon in it just like Battle works. Just for the Spherical and cubical elephants in the show) Seriously, why would someone complain that Tails knows the name of his home island. 22:07 Minor correction, Shadow does use Chaos Spears in the game. Doom Spears is when he’s using multiple at once while Chaos Spear is when he uses it once. Even if I’m wrong on that, he technically uses Chaos Spear in the first level before gaining the move. 30:10 If you go for an S rank, it doesn’t drag really that much. The better you are at the boss and taking advantage of its weak spots makes it go by much faster. Unless you did go for an S rank and your opinion is based on that, which I guess my point is moot for you, lol. Also, you can clearly tell budget and time wasn’t on their side with this one as the environment is just retextured Spaceport assets from Forces again, like with Frontiers. And I’m not exaggerating when saying that, just compare certain assets between the three games’ Chemical Plant assets and you’ll see what I mean. 34:03 Missed opportunity to not mention Mephiles’ portrayal in this boss. He’s not just hidden in the hub world, leading to people to theorize that the Time Eater or Black Doom kept him hidden from the time line. But he doesn’t sound as in control of the situation like in 06. And his “I want to exist” line implies that he’s become desperate to restore himself to the timeline that it’s like his mental state could’ve worsen since being removed from the timeline. You kinda want to pity him for second but you know how much of a terrible person he’s been, with the entire trying to destroy all of time and space. Overall, great video.
The only lines I feel were't as strong as the original were Eggman's lines. Not discounting Mike Policke's subdued line delivery in parts, cutting some of his lines like "It's the last look you'll get before I close your eyes forever!" and "Wow. Will I really get that crazy?" makes him come off as less over the top and intense.
7:09 you fail to realize, if they changed the physics of him the levels wouldnt work anymore. They were built for his generations controls. There is a reason why every cyberspace stage in frontiers that is taken from generations and unleashed are worse than the originals.
8:09 if they bring it back its less resorces given to the actual sonic part of the game. And considering the track record over the last 10 years.... i think we are better off without it.
6:09 theres still the light speed dash part at the start that never works. I think it was already a 1 frame input on 360 ps3, so on pc and the remaster it wont ever work
What was your favorite part of Shadow Generations?
The story and the gameplay

I liked the Boom show, the games... not so much.

The gunplay was that mediocre, it's a run and gun not a shooter
Noted. The edits have taken effect.
Still doesn’t change that it’s addition is tenuous and mediocre in the grand scheme of its gameplay.
21:00-21:17 TBH think it's the money they made from Frontiers is why the cutscenes are so damn good imo
