Honestly, when Sonic Forces came out, I joked for some months about it being the long awaited sequel to Sonic Chronicles (since Eggman took over the world in Forces, and Chronicles ends on a sequel bait cliffhanger wherein Eggman took over the world).
On one hand, that kinda sucks because I actually kinda liked Chronicles’ story, at least the things it was trying to do. On the other hand…Angel Island gets completely destroyed in that story, so…yeah, maybe a bit much to commit to.

You know, considering how often I hear people praise Battle’s story, I’m surprised I’ve only just learned about the grammatical errors. I legit thought the Wiki copied it wrong, since I also checked Rush’s (or maybe its sequel’s) script on it and there were errors there that I know weren’t in the actual game.
I mean, people praise SA2's story despite the awkward translations and terrible audio mixing. Sometimes a game's story is good enough that the presentation having errors is forgivable.
@@TheSultan1470grammatical errors are also part of translation. It wasn't written in broken Japanese and then translated to broken English. The translation was written wrong
I'm not sure if anyone else has found this, but Chaos' dash attack skill "Chaos Dolphin" appears to be the only attack in this game that is _dash cancelleable._ During any point of Chaos Dolphin - and while grounded - you can cancel it into another dash immediately. I think it's especially fun with Shadow's "Shadow Dash" and Gamma's "Drive Mode". Also, that Patreon outro was awesome.
Additional fun fact for those who haven't seen Sonic X(Spoilers however) When Emerl goes crazy with power at the end of the story, it's portrayed as Emerl having the moves of every character who fought him before with the ability to perfectly counter and beat them. This includes Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Rouge and some of the human extras. The only one who could counter him and the one to ultimately destroy him was none other than Cream The Rabbit because she and Cheese could double-team him in ways he couldn't predict because until that point, Cream had been a non-combatant. Cream literally has to kill Emerl herself and it's somehow even sadder than how Emerl goes out in the game.
Sonic X definetly feels sadder in the way the scene is composed, but I think Battle's one is a lot easier to feel connected into and feel sad for Emerl Emerl in Sonic X was really simple and basic, as for Battle, all the cast created him, basically raised him since he was like a child, he slowly learned how to talk, to have fun, and got close to everyone, until Sonic had to defeat Ultimate Emerl, so I feel more connected to Emerl in Battle, which makes the scene where he is destroyed more impactful on the GBA
And to really drive how heart wrenching Emerl's death was made to be, in the Japanese dub, the very last thing Emerl copied from Cream is her tears. And of course 4kids being 4kids, censored it with oil instead.
I have distinct memories of playing Sonic Battle while going camping with my dad. Those were the days. It's a shame we don't really see these type of games anymore.
When you finish any story chapter again after beating the game you actually get to read a journal entry from Gerald Robotnik. The Nocturnus clan obviously isn't mentioned, but I'm pretty sure Gerald did say that Gizoid was created by ancient echidnas.
14:21 To be fair, that's kinda literally the case for Chip and Emerl, since one sealed himself away to save the world, and the other one blew up. Also, I don't think Chronicles is canon, or even has been for a while. I don't blame Sega and Sonic Team for ignoring it though, mostly cause of that one guy that the Sonic community would rather not talk about. After Frontiers, I kinda just got the headcanon that those ancients were actually the ones who made him, since he has a strong relationship to Chaos and the emeralds, so it just makes sense.
I would like to mention whether its emeril or not but in the comics,Emerl is seen with cream, check out the metal Virus Saga specifically. Him being with her is actually in reference towards Sonic Advance 3's either the normal ending,or it's TRUE ending where you fight emerl,or at least a gizoid that absorbed all of the emeralds,if its emerl,it would explain(beside the timeframes of the games releasing like almost a year apart)Why some of the themes are either reused or repurposed, like emerls boss theme being his stage theme from Sonic Battle!
@@BKChanSaga6767 Yeah, those who don't know Battle when getting the true ending to the game, probably won't pick up Tails reprograms Gemerl to be like Emerl back when Emerl wasn't turned to the evil side. Speaking of Gemerl, I remember this one Mario 64 mod starring Cream the Rabbit from the Sonic franchise, where the hub world to get to the level missons in the mod, is the neutral Chao Garden from Adventure 2, and both Gemerl and Cream's mom Vanilla, are present there. I get Vanilla isn't a fighter in any form, but I hate that she's not in almost any Sonic game, being more present in Sonic X than the games. And I hate that the only time we've seen Gemerl, is in Advance 3, but, I guess the fact he isn't in more games than that one, means he's safe living with Vanilla, Cream, and Cheese, as we only get Sonic games when there's a story of trouble going on in their reality
13:30 There's actually 2 remixes of Emerald Beach in Sonic Generations. One of them is exclusive to the 3DS version as an unlockable track, and it's a lot more 'intense' than the console variation. Edit: For the record, not Emerald Coast--- actually Emerald Beach from Battle. It's worth a UA-cam search :)
He means that the challenge was coded right, the game does end the match if you hit Rouge with a special attack. It just considers only certain parts of moves "special attacks", as opposed to the whole move.
16:46 Nani?! I mean sora is in ultimate but the stage had to be censored for Disney stuff so to see Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck be name dropped in the third game is crazy!
It's arguable that the stage wasn't censored for Ultimate, since those versions of the backgrounds without Disney characters had already existed as part of Square Enix's marketing for Kingdom Heart's 15th anniversary. As far as I'm aware, Square only focuses on their own characters when marketing KH without Disney's involvement. I don't doubt that there was extra effort or attention in removing other references, but since Sora still got to keep his Mickey keychain, I'm guessing there were some exceptions that could be made.
As a fun fact, in the Spanish version of the game, the localization team thought Tails was a girls and is referred with female pronouns every time someone talks about him lmao
Because they translated his name to "Colitas", which was feminine in sound. Also on top of that, many people likely interpreted his tiny open anime mouth in the Sonic 2 title screen as lipstick.
@@SorcererLance Nah, they still called him Tails in Battle, they did call him Colitas in the Spanish Dub of Sonic X but he was still referred by male pronouns there, it was just bad localization, if the English localization is kinda bad the Spanish one is even worse, they even left a lot of stuff untranslated
I know "Your punch got not juice, fool!" is probably a typo but honestly I'm gonna choose to believe it was intentional because it just adds so much charm if it is Also, the Colosseum theme from Battle is just the battle theme when fighting a Phi, which borrows many elements from Emerl's own theme (obviously including the main melody). That's why it was used for Gemerl's final boss theme - he's a copy of Emerl, and that's Emerl's theme!
5:34 Welp, I guess that means your "no upgrades" run has been invalidated then, since you actually upgraded Emerl's turning speed without realizing. Who knows, maybe that made the difference! Guess you'll have to do it all over again! :P Fun video, never knew most of this stuff.
Hey, I think I can explain the type at about 10:10! Gamma in this game isn't the original robot, as you probably know, but just a reuse of his parts if I'm remembering right. To differentiate them slightly, this soulless version of the robot has the name Chaos Gamma, which is almost certainly where the two names came from; someone got confused, and they put an and in the middle of his name! Wait, you said this literally a second after I paused, god dang it.
So, turns out the Japanese version of Sonic Battle contains a full English version. For whatever reason during the GBA era SEGA would release games with both English and Japanese localizations included (The minna de puyo puyo/Puyo Pop game on GBA has both, I own the Japanese version that I picked up while I was in Japan complete in box, it has both languages, and I imagine they only changed the name of Satan in the western version). The Japanese English version includes some mild swears on the level of Shadow the Hedgehog. So I'm guessing the localizers just took out the words to make it get an E rating rather than E10+ or T (I don't remember if E10 existed by then) I do speak enough Japanese to be able to probably release a translation patch that fixes the actual errors, but this game is such a slog, I would have trouble play testing to make sure my changes didn't cause any other issues. This is definitely a contender for a game that would benefit from a remake with more depth to the combat (you know, the actual game play...) and maybe cut down the length a bit and release it as a Switch game or something. Knowing SEGA they'd probably just have it re-release on the Nintendo Switch Online service. I'm not enough of a fan of this game to do that kind of thing myself. (Nor am I knowledgeable enough with programming currently, I can really only make glorified calculators and automation tools and database queries)
We honestly gotta document all the scripts for the games across the diffrent languages. I will probably gather the german scripts(that are often kinda weird in Sonic games btw, so I actually expect some nonsense in Battle) with notes if someone else doesn't do it beforehand. Can't do it currently because I'm busy doing the same thing with some RPGs that sadly have nothing to do with Sonic.
I may have loved Sonic Battle, but seeing Sonic Chronicles get mentioned certainly made me light up. Back on topic though, the grammar error that always stuck with me was "Your punch got not juice, fool!", it was kinda infamous with some people I knew way back then. On another note, the ChuChu Rocket reference feels like it was made specifically for me, since Tails is my favorite Sonic character and ChuChu Rocket is one of my favorite puzzle games... on the GBA, since I never played the Dreamcast version. As far as I'm aware, the GBA version is an updated port of the Dreamcast one, so I don't feel like I missed out. I do wish that game got another chance, I had near endless fun with its level creator. EDIT: So, sometimes I write things based solely off my memory and I don't feel the need to verify my information first. I took a casual trip over to ChuChu Rocket's Wikipedia page to learn that the game did in fact get another chance with a sequel about 5 years ago. Only one problem, it's on Apple Arcade and I don't own any Apple devices so I'm going to explode into spaghetti
@@Ayacakes95 It was discontinued? That's sad to hear, I only just learned about it too. It doesn't give me the most hope that I'll see it again if that's the treatment it got.
To go further on what the game counts as "special move" for the sake of the Rouge challenge, some of the overpowered cheat code power specials don't count (i.e. shadow's) also don't count as special moves because they are simply a large brutality style strings of normal attacks followed by a rush attack. Others like sonic's will count because it ends in his shot special

You mention that Gemerl is a copy of Emerl, but: Thats Actually the plot. In the ending if Advance 3, you see Tails reprogram him back into being Emerl, and he lives with Cream and Vanilla. I think it's cute.
@@artey6671 All we get is a few single images, no text. Just Cream finding Gemerl after the fight, Tails fixing him up, and then Gemerl at Cream and Vanilla's home. And then they never got mentioned again in any story relevant manner.
@@artey6671 Rush may be before Battle and Advance 3 on the timeline. Battle and Advance 3 definitely happen _after_ Shadow the Hedgehog, as Shadow has his memories in Battle, rather than being completely blank like he was in Heroes and his own game. Rush, the other 2005 game, may be a similar situation.
Well, that was what was assumed until IDW came out. There, Gemerl speaks and he's very obviously not Emerl. It's most obvious via comparing his appearances in Archie and IDW, both written by Ian Flynn. Archie Gemerl: Buddy, what I *want* is to live peacefully. But you just had to come to my town and cause a fuss. So, instead, I'll make you rest in peace! IDW Gemerl: Request acknowledged. Proceeding to assist village defences to protect Cream, Vanilla, and family. In Archie, he talks with similar cadence as Emerl's fully-formed self does once he has all of the Emeralds, but before he goes nuts. He's brash and confident and heroic. He has a similar character to Sonic, because that's who raised Emerl, but he's also got Shadow's focus and more serious attitude, in-keeping with Shadow being the other most important person in Emerl's life. Archie's Gemerl is indeed a reborn Emerl, as was generally assumed by the fandom for the 10 years between Advance 3's release and SEGA finally letting Ian actually use him in the comics. In IDW (which we have good evidence is more tightly controlled by SEGA, so may be more accurate to how SEGA see the character), he's a robot. He talks flatly, in an obvious monotone, and drops whole words, describing his own actions before he does them. He's the most generic robot to ever robot. You could give his dialogue to any other robotic character and it wouldn't be out of place. Even the speech bubbles tell a story. Archie Gemerl has rounded bubbles and the same text font as the rest of the characters. IDW Gemerl has square bubbles and a 'techno-ish' font, for lack of a better term.
You think Mickey Mouse being in mentioned in Super Smash Bros. is wild? If you go to the Game Boy Color/Advance section, you can see a few Hamtaro games listed as well! -Hamtaro: Ham-Hams Unite! -Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak -Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games As a Hamtaro fan, seeing them get mentioned was pretty cool!
In Sonic Movie 2, when Sonic is fighting Knuckles at the Master Emerald's temple shrine, Knuckles tries to crush Sonic with a boulder, very simillarly to his boulder pound move in Sonic Battle.
Fun video! I want to add a bit to the musical references part. While the Colosseum/Phi Battle reference in Nonagression is correct, I think the reference is more towards Sonic Battle's Emerl's Theme, as both Phi Battle and Nonaggression take their leitmotifs from there. (It would make sense, since Gemerl is basically Emerl, and Phis were Emerl's lesser copies or something?) There's another part of Phi Battle/Emerl's Theme present in Nonaggression, right where you cut off the song in the video. You can hear it even more clearly in the Pinch version of the song (when the boss is at low HP), as it plays constantly.
You can also payse and quit out of a few other fights: The Sonic story fight where you fight Tails and Emerl in Tails' Lab The Tails story first fight with Sonic and Emerl The Tails story fight with Rouge for the lab pass
Two details about battle skipping that you missed. In sonics story you can skip the emerald beach training fight by quitting the battle and in rouges story you can skip the rest of the guard robo battle in the thief training by quitting after getting the 5 KO's you need
Apparently there's some differences in the English script in the Japanese version of Sonic Battle, according to TCRF? That might be an interesting thing to cover, that is if it won't end up being any boring…
Emerl's lack of actual tangible appearances despite being occasionally referenced is probably down to two things: 1) He's dead. SEGA are extremely particular about dead characters. If someone died, then unless they become massively popular (Shadow), then dead is dead, even for adaptations. This is partially why Mephiles and Iblis were never allowed to appear in Archie, besides oblique references and cameos, and the encyclopedia saying "Yeah 06 happened and erased itself off-screen", and why Infinite hasn't appeared in IDW. Those characters, like Emerl, are officially killed off and won't appear again. The lone exceptions to this are the Zeti, who are all seemingly killed off in Lost World, only to (unfortunately) return repeatedly in subsequent games and comics. So yes, all the cool dead characters stay dead (except Shadow, who was too popular to die) and the shitty dead characters get to be resurrected. You can't have Emerl or Mephiles but you _can_ have Dollar Tree Bowser. 2) The _way_ Emerl dies runs counter to the way they want to present Eggman in particular. Like, Eggman _kills_ Emerl. Indirectly and unintentionally, but nonetheless, Eggman attempts to reset Emerl and steal him away from Sonic, and instead of causes Emerl to unleash his Ultimate mode and trigger Gerald's failsafe, killing him. And "Eggman killed Sonic's robot son" decidedly does not fit with the way current material is trying to present Eggman as a somewhat wholesome family man. It's a step too dark for them, so rather than do anything with Emerl they just shove him in the corner and only make occasional passing references to him.
You know, looking back at how secretly influential Emerl and Gizoids became after Sonic Battle, I'm surprised they weren't revisited as a concept for Sonic Forces. Instead of having a random civilian with no form of training taking up arms, they could've just reused the Gizoid concept for it as the player Avatar character. They are after all highly customizable and trainable as proven by Sonic Battle. Could've simply just made it that they found old archive data of the Gizoid plans on Dr. Eggman's database from the creation of Gemerl in the past and make another Gizoid on their side. Such a missed opportunity.
Some Skills in this game also have wrong names due to the original names being english words spelled phonetically in Japanese that also happen to ressemble other English words: - Both Sonic and Cream have Air Action moves called Sonic/Cream Ballet. The original names for the moves, according to the wiki, is "ソニックバレット" or "Sonikku Baretto" in romanji, which is most likely supposed to mean Sonic (and Cream) *Bullet*. Although that one is somewhat understandable since the two words are incredibly similar even in english and even moreso when spelled in Japanese (Google translate even thinks I'm trying to say "valet" when I remove the Sonic part); - Rouge's dash skill named "Rouge Grind" in English is called "ルージュグライド Rūjuguraido", which is a lot more clearly trying to say "Rouge Glide". This one is even weirder because even the description even says that she's "Gliding at low altitudes". But then there's also Knuckles's air action that's called "Grinder attack" in both English and Japanese, yet the description also says that he's Gliding like Rouge. So that might be where the confusion came from; - Cream's third attack is called "Chao Salom" which, afaik, isn't an English word. The Japanese name is "チャオスラローム Chaosurarōmu", aka "Chao *Slalom*". That one is a lot more clear cut but to be fair, they might have actually understood what the word was supposed to be but just misspelt it (like a lot of words in this game). - Probably the funniest one is Rouge's Ground Power "Silent Size". For the longest time I couldn't understand what that was supposed to mean. That is until recently when I found out it's Japanese name is "サイレントサイズ Sairento Saizu", aka "Silent *Scythe*. Which makes way more sense regarding it's description of "a Powerful High Kick that can split an opponent in half". It's honestly so weird that they ever thought that "size" made even the slightest bit of sense within this context, but it is still really funny. And that's about it. There's also Knuckle's Upper action called "Enrage" in English and "Tea Table Flip" (チャブダイガエシ Chabudaigaeshi) in Japanese, but that one feels like just an odd translation choice rather than an actual mistake.
15:45 Oh yeah! I didn’t exactly watch Sonic X, but my first time hearing about it WAS catching episodes for myself. Specifically the ones retelling the endings of SA 1 and 2 (I think in opposite order). Let me tell you, that scene toward the end of SA2 where Amy convinces Shadow to join the good guys, hits a lot different when it’s that human kid from Sonic X instead…and when Shadow beats the $&@& out of the poor guy before his memories unlock.
@@TheSultan1470 I sure as heck didn’t know who he was when I caught these episodes. Maybe the Chris haters would’ve cheered at that moment, but to me, I just got a disturbing scene of Shadow beating up a child pretty bad.
16:00 probably because it was technically released before Heroes, albeit only by 26 days. Odd that Advance 1 and 2 were left out, maybe they just didn’t think there was much to adapt there.
Man, if chu is a variable, then chu² = chu * chu. Now I feel stupid for not realising that. 3:04 Did you get that skill by chance? I guess it's Shadow's ??? skill. I only have two of them. It looks insane. Hopefully I get it one day. 3:55 I didn't think of it that way. But yes, the ball can't be blocked. It makes Emerl's ground shot extremely overpowered by dealing about 1/3 of the enemies' health. Here's something I am absolutely sure I encountered as a kid. I play the German version, but some of the skill descriptions were in French. Then I switched to French and they were in German. On the same cartridge, I can't reproduce it. I don't get it. Anyway, I learned a few new things here. Thanks, man. I really like this game and I think it's a shame it's often overlooked. Here are two more things I find interesting. First, Emerl has two front side sprites. One where his third eye is closed and one where it's open. Secondly, there is a way to win battles within a few seconds in challenge mode. I forgot the source or the details, but basically when you perform certain steps you can skip some battles. I don't know what the deal with that is.
3:04 Nah I used action replay codes to get all of the skills. Unlocking them normally takes way to long to do. And yes that is the one of the ??? Aerial POW specials. Crazy that they actually flipped those two languages on the German version.
I never thought about looking up speedruns of the game, but it does make sense to do the infinite OHKO meter exploit for that. I just used that for farming ultimate moves at Tails' house whenever I didn't feel like popping up Shadow combo for the 1000th time.
I bought Battle when it was new and after all these years, only now can I see that the Chuchu is an actual mouse. I always thought it looked like a roller skate.
I think the grammatical errors might be caused by the fact the english translation was seemingly made in-house. That is to say, if you play the japanese version you can switch the language to english. Is likely that the localization team just didn't double check the script. I played both versions and the only difference I could find in the japanese english script is that some of the descriptions of the Emerl-exclusive techniques (Like the combos) have a placeholder text instead of being translated. It reads "A mysterious special skill. The effect of this skill has only been heard of in legends."
In the Spanish translation, at the start when Tails finds out about Emerl and takes it to his workshop, he refers to itself as a female in the word "sola" instead of "solo"
Fun fact: After finishing a story, the game asks you if you want to continue with the story or select a different episode. When playing the Japanese version with the English text selected, there will be a big mistranslation. This is fixed in the Western releases though. Also, the JP (English text option) version has Rouge calling someone a "dirty bastard" but it was changed in the Western release.
Yeah, the Japanese-in-English version said "This story-save-data but Emerl Skill will be eliminated", when it's the opposite - story data will be lost, but Emerl's skills will be kept - New Game+ if you will.
Oh yeah you forgot to mention the code area in the central city area thing, where you punch in codes to get specific attacks. Specifically special attacks if i remember correctly, for emerl. Which fills up all those missing slots of moves you can get.... oh yeah and the some you can just earn from completing that endless mode thing, that is highly unfair if you ask me.
Each code gives you a unique Super Combo card, which are all Ground Power cards that cause Emerl to do a combo of one character's moves that insta-kills anyone hit by all (or in some cases just most, IIRC) of it.
about the quit to win things i wonder if they meant to code these battles to be win or lose? like the story progresses if you won the fight or not but losing a fight automatically means a fail so you have to fight again quitting out would bypass that fail_and_retry state
And Another Fun Fact, That Poster That Features Emerl, Marine And Chip Actually Is In Sonic Speed Simulator Aswell In City Escape That Recently Came Out
I love both Sonic Chronicles the Dark Brotherhood, but this game is fun too, just rather annoying as hell camera movement and fighting controls. Tbh Sonic Battle needs a remake, a 3D remake to be played on other consoles on the big screens, it was not a good idea for it to be on small screen
Weird, I always presumed the "got not juice" line was just Emerl speaking in broken language, does he not do that at any other point early on? I don't remember.
Worth briefly pointing out that Sonic Chronicles: the Dark Brotherhood is the rare Sonic game that is no longer considered canon

I legit thought the Wiki copied it wrong, since I also checked Rush’s (or maybe its sequel’s) script on it and there were errors there that I know weren’t in the actual game.
I didn't realize there was grammar errors when I played Battle too
I mean, people praise SA2's story despite the awkward translations and terrible audio mixing.
Sometimes a game's story is good enough that the presentation having errors is forgivable.
@@ToaArcan But that's translation
@@TheSultan1470grammatical errors are also part of translation. It wasn't written in broken Japanese and then translated to broken English. The translation was written wrong
@@KingOfDarknessAndEvilAre you sure about that?
I'm not sure if anyone else has found this, but Chaos' dash attack skill "Chaos Dolphin" appears to be the only attack in this game that is _dash cancelleable._
During any point of Chaos Dolphin - and while grounded - you can cancel it into another dash immediately. I think it's especially fun with Shadow's "Shadow Dash" and Gamma's "Drive Mode".
Also, that Patreon outro was awesome.
I had no idea! So cool!
haha. "wave dashing"
Additional fun fact for those who haven't seen Sonic X(Spoilers however)
When Emerl goes crazy with power at the end of the story, it's portrayed as Emerl having the moves of every character who fought him before with the ability to perfectly counter and beat them.
Sonic X definetly feels sadder in the way the scene is composed, but I think Battle's one is a lot easier to feel connected into and feel sad for Emerl
Emerl in Sonic X was really simple and basic, as for Battle, all the cast created him, basically raised him since he was like a child, he slowly learned how to talk, to have fun, and got close to everyone, until Sonic had to defeat Ultimate Emerl, so I feel more connected to Emerl in Battle, which makes the scene where he is destroyed more impactful on the GBA
Agrees
And to really drive how heart wrenching Emerl's death was made to be, in the Japanese dub, the very last thing Emerl copied from Cream is her tears. And of course 4kids being 4kids, censored it with oil instead.
Would be nice if Gmerald appeared in X he has a nice relationship with cream post adventure 3, she finds him and takes care of him
I have distinct memories of playing Sonic Battle while going camping with my dad. Those were the days. It's a shame we don't really see these type of games anymore.
"Your punch got not juice, fool!" I mean that one just sounds slangy.
Emerl was picking up on others' speech patterns, not just their moves, so that kinda makes sense.
Well, it would be more like "got no juice, fool" but yeah
@@TheRealBlazingDiamond No, I know what I said.
@@StarshadowMelody in that case, it would be "not-juice" if the not was on purpose tho lol
It's at a point where Emerl is picking up on english but doesn't fully grasp it quite yet, so him messing up articles does make sense.
When you finish any story chapter again after beating the game you actually get to read a journal entry from Gerald Robotnik. The Nocturnus clan obviously isn't mentioned, but I'm pretty sure Gerald did say that Gizoid was created by ancient echidnas.
He only calls the creators of Emerl the _"Fourth Great Civilization",_ with no further mention of who they were.
I'm so glad to see Sonic Battle fans come together with all these fun facts!
We don't show ourselves often. But a video like this is a good meeting place, I think.
I'm just happy my memory wasn't just wrong.
Fair points, fair points
I would like to mention whether its emeril or not but in the comics,Emerl is seen with cream, check out the metal Virus Saga specifically. Him being with her is actually in reference towards Sonic Advance 3's either the normal ending,or it's TRUE ending where you fight emerl,or at least a gizoid that absorbed all of the emeralds,if its emerl,it would explain(beside the timeframes of the games releasing like almost a year apart)Why some of the themes are either reused or repurposed, like emerls boss theme being his stage theme from Sonic Battle!
@@BKChanSaga6767 That's not Emerl. That's Gemerl.
@@johnathonturner2279 yeah I see,my bad. Gemerl is the spiritual successor of Emerl

Everybody needs to stop what they are doing and get on UA-cam now. Mawde Wile has just uploaded a Sonic video.
A few of sonics moves in smash are also based on battle
13:30 There's actually 2 remixes of Emerald Beach in Sonic Generations. One of them is exclusive to the 3DS version as an unlockable track, and it's a lot more 'intense' than the console variation.
Edit: For the record, not Emerald Coast--- actually Emerald Beach from Battle. It's worth a UA-cam search :)
Oooo I need to hear this
Actually another tidbit about Emerald Beach, the guitar riffs in the background get reused for Route 99 in Sonic Advance 3
"The game wasn't coded incorrectly. Just weirdly." That sounds like a nice way of saying it was coded incorrectly.
The Mickey symbol is still in the game. Though it IS kinda hilarious that Donald was allowed to get a reference in Brawl, but not in Ultimate.
*HA* femboy.
@@derocross3545 I've heard that they called Tails/Colitas a girl in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, so there's that.
What if Emerald Town is in the Green Hill Zone 🤔 It would explain why the games would start there if Sonic lived there.
I know "Your punch got not juice, fool!" is probably a typo but honestly I'm gonna choose to believe it was intentional because it just adds so much charm if it is
Also, the Colosseum theme from Battle is just the battle theme when fighting a Phi, which borrows many elements from Emerl's own theme (obviously including the main melody). That's why it was used for Gemerl's final boss theme - he's a copy of Emerl, and that's Emerl's theme!
The Chu² skills could actually be read as "Chu squared" or "Chu-Chu" alternatively
5:34
Welp, I guess that means your "no upgrades" run has been invalidated then, since you actually upgraded Emerl's turning speed without realizing. Who knows, maybe that made the difference! Guess you'll have to do it all over again! :P
Fun video, never knew most of this stuff.
"Wait, you said this literally a second after I paused, god dang it."
Way too many times that happens >_>
So, turns out the Japanese version of Sonic Battle contains a full English version. For whatever reason during the GBA era SEGA would release games with both English and Japanese localizations included (The minna de puyo puyo/Puyo Pop game on GBA has both, I own the Japanese version that I picked up while I was in Japan complete in box, it has both languages, and I imagine they only changed the name of Satan in the western version). The Japanese English version includes some mild swears on the level of Shadow the Hedgehog. So I'm guessing the localizers just took out the words to make it get an E rating rather than E10+ or T (I don't remember if E10 existed by then)
I do speak enough Japanese to be able to probably release a translation patch that fixes the actual errors, but this game is such a slog, I would have trouble play testing to make sure my changes didn't cause any other issues.
Didn't know that Emerl was from an entire race of robots in Chronicles, woah!
Only one problem, it's on Apple Arcade and I don't own any Apple devices so I'm going to explode into spaghetti
i played the apple arcade but didn't get to finish it as it was discontinued! it was pretty fun too...
@@Ayacakes95 It was discontinued? That's sad to hear, I only just learned about it too. It doesn't give me the most hope that I'll see it again if that's the treatment it got.
I thought I posted this for a split second.
Generations and Mania are exceptions with Green Hill’s usage; Generations has the definitive comeback and reimagination of the course and Mania has the re-pixelization look that ages just as well as the classic sonic games after the first one and the rest of Mania’s catalog, plus it adds to the what if question if Green Hill wasn’t added to Mania to begin with.l.
3:00 As a little addition to the auto-shield special moves: if the meter above your health is full, the next special move will one-shot the opponent, however, if they're immune to the special you hit them with, their meter will immediately fill up.
The music from this game is my favorite in the series.
You mention that Gemerl is a copy of Emerl, but: Thats Actually the plot. In the ending if Advance 3, you see Tails reprogram him back into being Emerl, and he lives with Cream and Vanilla.
I think it's cute.
I didn't even know that. But does he have Emerl's memories? Cream is the one who taught him to be empathetic and have emotions.
@@artey6671 All we get is a few single images, no text.
Just Cream finding Gemerl after the fight, Tails fixing him up, and then Gemerl at Cream and Vanilla's home.
And then they never got mentioned again in any story relevant manner.
@@calemr Oh well. Maybe he was upstairs in Cream's house when Blaze visited Cream in Rush.
-Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak
-Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games
As a Hamtaro fan, seeing them get mentioned was pretty cool!
Games like Sonic Battle and Sonic riders really suffered from not having well t a u g h t game mechanics
Wow this game has a lot of depth. Like, enough for it to be an online fighter.
Sonic Battle also constantly misspells jewellery as jewelry.
even I knew how to explode, and I've never actually beaten this game. I loved trolling the bots with it
You can also payse and quit out of a few other fights:
The Sonic story fight where you fight Tails and Emerl in Tails' Lab
The Tails story first fight with Sonic and Emerl
The Tails story fight with Rouge for the lab pass
You can quit out of all of the fight that doesn't require you to win as the condition, tecnically
Two details about battle skipping that you missed. In sonics story you can skip the emerald beach training fight by quitting the battle and in rouges story you can skip the rest of the guard robo battle in the thief training by quitting after getting the 5 KO's you need

At least saying “a” instead of “an” is more realistic for someone to accidentally say. Compared to the others.
Pretty good egg man impression.
Congrats on 15k!
Apparently there's some differences in the English script in the Japanese version of Sonic Battle, according to TCRF? That might be an interesting thing to cover, that is if it won't end up being any boring…
Emerl's lack of actual tangible appearances despite being occasionally referenced is probably down to two things:
1) He's dead.
Why would you have any doubts about the Gimmee Shelter reference? It's one of the Rolling Stones most famous songs.
Just letting you know, "Ichi" is pronounced similarly to "Itchy" :)
Love the video, now you've made me want to try out Sonic Battle!

Your Eggman and Shadow impressions caught me off guard, they're so good I thought they were actually voicelines for a second
No amount of worshiping a youtuber will make them your friend
Some Skills in this game also have wrong names due to the original names being english words spelled phonetically in Japanese that also happen to ressemble other English words:
- Both Sonic and Cream have Air Action moves called Sonic/Cream Ballet. The original names for the moves, according to the wiki, is "ソニックバレット" or "Sonikku Baretto" in romanji, which is most likely supposed to mean Sonic (and Cream) *Bullet*. Although that one is somewhat understandable since the two words are incredibly similar even in english and even moreso when spelled in Japanese (Google translate even thinks I'm trying to say "valet" when I remove the Sonic part);
- Rouge's dash skill named "Rouge Grind" in English is called "ルージュグライド Rūjuguraido", which is a lot more clearly trying to say "Rouge Glide". This one is even weirder because even the description even says that she's "Gliding at low altitudes". But then there's also Knuckles's air action that's called "Grinder attack" in both English and Japanese, yet the description also says that he's Gliding like Rouge. So that might be where the confusion came from;
- Cream's third attack is called "Chao Salom" which, afaik, isn't an English word.
Your videos are genuinely some of my favorites on the entire internet
Great video! Keep up the good work!!!!!
What is this?! No Chris hate?! Nice!
Crazy that they actually flipped those two languages on the German version.
with the latest sonic X shadow generation trailers i think emerl is in the animated trailer fighting shadow (or is it a very similar one?)
I never thought about looking up speedruns of the game, but it does make sense to do the infinite OHKO meter exploit for that. I just used that for farming ultimate moves at Tails' house whenever I didn't feel like popping up Shadow combo for the 1000th time.

Sonic Chronicles mentioned, my life span has increased by 5 years.
If poses change turning speed, does that mean you technically cheated on your “No Upgrades” challenge? 🤔
I'd be unsuprised if Emerald Town was in Emerald Hill. Idk name would make sense.
Personally, sonic battle is in my top two sonic fighting games
Oh yeah you forgot to mention the code area in the central city area thing, where you punch in codes to get specific attacks. Specifically special attacks if i remember correctly, for emerl. Which fills up all those missing slots of moves you can get.... oh yeah and the some you can just earn from completing that endless mode thing, that is highly unfair if you ask me.
That's not even the worst part. The ??? skills are even more difficult to get in my experience.
Each code gives you a unique Super Combo card, which are all Ground Power cards that cause Emerl to do a combo of one character's moves that insta-kills anyone hit by all (or in some cases just most, IIRC) of it.

I wonder what could happen if sonic press yes to give shadow gerold immediately.
im sure i knew about some of the grammatical errors but that's insane LMAO
Weird, I always presumed the "got not juice" line was just Emerl speaking in broken language, does he not do that at any other point early on? I don't remember.
By that point, he's supposed to be talking like the people he's assimilated moves from.
This is directly after the Knuckles chapter.
The logo looks like a club Penguin character
