- The original 1982 version of the video for "Red Skies" by The Fixx from their first CD "Shuttered Room". The video aired for 11 weeks on MTV ultimately reaching heavy rotation. The single peaked at #101 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart (bubbling under). I do not own copyright to the video or the audio.
If you're not here in 2024 and with the best FIXX song!
My favorite by them is "Stand or Fall."
This one will always haunt me, so beautiful
Saw them and flock of sea gulls together in concert.
Brings back so many good memories of a simpler time with great friends.
@@dscott351 hell yeh, being young with boundless energy and few real worries is what I miss most. Im not sure if it was a gift or a curse but I knew even back then that those were the best times of my life. I miss those times so much.
back when MTV played music instead of glorifying teen pregnancy
Actually, some of the videos they played back then glorified teen pregnancy and worse. Don't get me started.
@@MDCSWildcats86 LOL, right...
+Nathan Milliron Yeah but MTV didn't specifically have shows for that
MUSIC television.
NOT shit TV.
When the 80's came out I lived the lifestyle and I was damn proud of it
Almost 40 years old and still blows me away every time I hear it.
Those were the days. Great song!!
Such a fat sound/song.-writing!!!
I just saw them the other night in MPLS. Incredible
Same
Songs about nuclear destruction tended to be fierce and popular.
Great song. This is back when MTV was music television. Now it's manure television.
RetroJenny true....I like that comment...I grew up when Mtv first started....the good ole 80s....😎
I agreed.
VERY TRUE Steve!!! In FACT..............MTV,was barely a year-old when this video debuted on it!!! As a bunch of my friends, and myself watched when MTV first debuted back in August 1,1981!!!! Ahhhhhh, the 80's RULED My Friends!!! :)
AKA moron television
Manuretelevision LOL !!!
By far, the BEST version (the original studio version), not the re-mixed one they passed off years later. Rupert's keys sound amazing, and Cy's vocals rock.
And Jamie West-Oram definitely does not suck on guitars.
He's the other cool New Wave guitarist from the 80s, besides U2's The Edge, that played shattering icicles guitar.
And the original bassist, Charlie Barrett, was great too, though he bailed after Shuttered Room, sadly.
The guy that replaced him?
With the beard?
Dan K. Brown?
A bit less interesting, to me, although he stayed with The Fixx a bit longer, ultimately.
Alfie Agius was also good on bass, but he too left shortly after joining the band.
He did the Shuttered Room tour, recorded 4 songs on the album Reach the Beach, including the hits *Saved By Zero* and *One Thing Leads to Another.*
Totally agree
I just came from that version. He did have better hair in that video.
The newer version is 10X better...
While i can appreciate your honesty, the 2nd version (I think) is so different from THIS version I don't think they merit comparison. They almost sound like 2 different songs.
I think we can agree that we ALL love The Fixx.
This is actually a live excellent performance. Shows the Fix talent. God I mis the 80s.
Agreed
I believe this could be a performance done on a show similar to "Top of the Pops", where bands would mime their songs in front of an audience. On some occasions, the vocal track was stripped and the singer would be the only one performing it live. If you notice what Cy does at the bridge, it seems to make sense. The music, however, sounds exactly like the recording. I've always loved the tone JWO got out of his guitar, which I believe is a rodded up strat copy (forgot the brand).
me 2. Thank G^d for UA-cam.
@@spookerz35 the music sounds different than the studio version
@@spookerz35 I disagree
1: They are all plugged in
2: Watch the drummer and keyboardist
3: Miming that well without 1 single screw up
4: This is not any studio recording I'm aware of.
5: There were shows back then that had "Live Music" The BBC did and another off the top of my head was Midnight Special in The US. That's just off the top of my head.
This song gives me shivers even now after all these years.
Would you explain what he is singing about, please? I'm from Peru and can't understand clearly his words.
The Fixx relevant and well in 2024
Hell yes!
Relevant as Hell currently. I grew up in the Nuclear fear of the 70's and 80's. Here we go again!
Do you find it funny that some of the songs from the 1980s and not the Disco generation of course kind of seemed to be coming true especially now would love to hear from anybody
This song is one of the most remarkable songs of the 80's. I saw them do this live in the 90's.
Completely agreed my friend !!
I miss 80s music. Good thing I can come to UA-cam.
I feel so bad for kids today. They will never know how great we had it in this decade and the music we got to enjoy. Their stuck with bieber. Poor kids.
Also... I want to do bad things to Cy! 😘💕
I was born in 1996... and it SUCKS!!! 80s FTW
I'm 36 years old and I agree. Music now can't compete.
Kelle Thomas LOL I KNOW 😭😂😂
You know there is always metal.
I was a little kid during the First British Invasion. I was old enough for the New Wave dance clubs during the Second British Invasion. I want my MTV!
Same!!
Nothing touches this version. Cy kills it with these vocals. In fact, the whole band is great here.
SERIOUSLY...this band was so ahead of it's time.. this is so fucking great today and simply blows today's music away!!! TIMELESS..
*its time. Not it's.
Unbelievably authentic raw and perfect version of this great song
Waaayy better than the studio version
@@edwardbrook2029 FYI, this is a TV 'performance' on a show similar to 'Top of the Pops', and the recorded 'performance' was later turned into a video for MTV, MuchMusic & equivalents around the globe. However...unlike 'Top of the Pops' & most TV shows of the day, this 'performance' is Cy actually singing live over a pre-recorded backing track. The backing track is actually the original studio recording from the Fixx album called "Shuttered Room". BTW, I would encourage you to hunt down that album, as it has this version of "Red Skies At Night", (which, I agree, is MUCH better than the re-recorded version)...plus it has some other great tunes!
This, lunatic fringe and twilight zone were the 3 best songs to crank all the way up while cruising up and down the main drag back in high school. Good times, good memories.
Those are three absolutely awesome tunes. Haven't listened to Lunatic Fringe or Twilight Zone in quite a while. Will do so now.
Fuckin A!
excellent taste!
Oh yes Mike Awesome tunes, such great times so many decades ago. Thankful we can still listen to them. Blessed we were to have such Awesome music. Every aspect of it, brings chills to me think how much we were so blessed. Amen
You know it Mike, What a magical time it was being with so much great music, movies, friends, just surreal.
I’m not a musician, but this song sounds very complex musically. Extremely creative. Genius.
The fixx my dude, ahead of there time

@atticusfinch3931 it makes her feel relevant, it's all good.
Definitely one of my favorite bands of the 80's. There were so many to choose from. The Fixx, The Police, The Cars, INXS, The Pretenders, Berlin, Missing Persons, The Motels and many others. The more I think about it, I think the 80's was the best decade musically both in sound and videos.
definitely the best era.
Well said
A Flock of Seagulls, Men at Work, Culture Club, Billy Idol!
Add in Hall & Oates
The newer version is 10X better...
The BASS is killing!
This started something in us, so long ago.
Driving at night and listening to this song puts me into an altered reality, lol I know that sounds weird but this song takes me back in a time I wasn't even born in. Great Music they had back then.
I hear stuff like this and I see my wife and I back when we were first going out. Dancing, drinking beer, shooting pool and…. (You know). Brings tears to my eyes.
I wanna go back!!! Man we had some great times back then. And the music was soooo good! The Fixx is THE sound of the early 80's.
me too mate
I reply to you nine years later, i have my Time Machine ready...still wanna go? Lol 👍
@@batphink2655 YES! Get me outta here! LOL
Absolutely in less than a second I would gladly go back.
THE MUSIC WAS THE BEST PART OF THE 80'S. IT DIDN'T LAST LONG ENOUGH.
That bass tone.
I respect Cy. He certainly wasn't going to lip sync. His voice is phenomenal
I was lucky to see the Fixx live several times in St Louis, Mo.. at free concerts.. I'd pay to see them again!
............. A TIMELESS CLASSIC...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
...........and ALWAYS WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!!
Red Skies at night. Such a great song.
1982 was a sad year for me, and it's a paradox that this terrifying song actually felt uplifting musically at the time. There is a sort of feeling for people, for everyone, a love of Humanity. I really like the poignant keyboards, the singing and the arrangements. Thank you, The Fixx.
Why sad year
I'm Still Hooked After Hearing "Red Skies At Night" In 82!!! ❤🙏🏼✌😎
Always on my Playlist.. it never gets old... even though I am
i was working at a gas station in Queens NY after school, part time and had this and other tunes in my cassette player. I also had a pocket full of quarters so I could call my girl.
There a whole generation that's never even seen a payphone. There's a defunct payphone in a nearby town to me. I so wanna steel that bitch and use it for art.
@@metalandwood4u do it! I don't think anyone will go crazy or anything. Do it! Do it! Do it! That would be awesome art! I'd do it!
Damn I remember when it was a dime...
Hi. I grew up in Queens- Flushing area!! The good old days!!
music like this only comes along once in a lifetime. thank goodness we have the ability to pull it up at will.
Would you explain what he is singing about, please? I'm from Peru and can't understand clearly his words.
I just saw them 11/23. They're better now!
They still sound great!
Still get chills from this one🤔
YEP.....this is a classic from the 1980's.....this version is much better than the faster version
Me too...
"Someone said,, "We'll be dead by morning" ,, Someone cries... Leaving red eyes at night"
Absolutely brilliat song by a incredible band. Loved this song in the 80's but had forgotten about it for a long time. Then if I recall correctly in the late 90's it was dark and the skies were red and I took a picture of them, it was from the massive fires in mexico. When I seen the Red Skies it brought back this song and that night I downloaded it off Napster.
June 1983 I was 15 yrs old, a record store in downtown Traverse City, Michigan...this video was playing on a big screen tv, and I was blown away...I remember it like it was yesterday
SET THE HOT TUB CONTROLS. THE WAYBACK MACHINE, OR JUST REINSERT ME IN THE MATRIX I MONTH BEFORE YOU SAID and wipe all the last 38 years ..then for better or worse it would have been A real LIFE.
Man...1982...I was 13 yrs old & in 7th grade.
I remember this song being played on 97.5 WABB here in Mobile Alabama...I thought this song was the GREATEST SONG EVER!!!
The 80s will always be THE GREATEST ERA/DECADE OF MUSIC TO EVER COME AROUND IN MY OPINION especially 1981-1985.
The 80s music phenomenon will never be FORGOTTEN OR LOST!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
I miss bands like this. The 80's was full of great bands.....they have been replaced with justin beaber.... and other crap like him.
Beaber's not even the worst of it.
Agreed, its the crappy artists that use autotune in every song not hearing their natural voices, when they could be unique.
bigguedo, I agree!
+Allow me Eighties was the height of talent, music, etc
Not so. Try college alternative online streaming. Some awesome stuff if you look in the right place.
I'm a big fan of what I'd like to call "twangy bass". This song has it in spades!
anthony dalrymple Great bass in this song
I call it warm, fuzzy bass.
@@stevenpekich7035 SO how was it that he was replaced by Bassist that has been with them ever since?
@@qg3726 Uncertain. There was an Alf Agies who played bass on some songs for REACH THE BEACH (including OTLTA and SB0), but he left the band during recording and Dan Brown joined late.
Some songs on RTB were recorded as a quartet with the bass played by Rupert Greenall's bass synth.
Sir. I am from.Brazil and I am knowing this song today. Amazing song
Great school years, great parties, beach going, hangouts with good friends. great movies, great music, great bands .Yeap the 80's were so g great! the best time of my life ❤

Jenny you said a mouthful
We literally had it all. Blessed we were to live it.
Great song! Awesome version. No one writes tunes like this anymore. 80's was such a great decade for music.
One of the best Decade in human existence, hands down dude
Just love music 🎶 from 80's Just love MTV couldn't stop watching it waslike drug 😊
This is so hauntingly beautiful, like the early 80's. I miss then when I was in art school BEFORE computers took it over.

Yeah, and today's "music" videos seem to involve "hos" humpin' the camera lens. The good old days are gone.
+gdcat777 "ho's humpin' the camera lens"...yep! that pretty much sums up todays sad state of popular music LOL. hilarious.... i hate rap and hip hop too...i was 10 in 1982 and remember well this being aired on MTV, i went out and bought Shuttered Room on vinyl pretty much immediately.. used to CRANK this song out my window for the neighborhood to hear LOL

... still touring and well worth seeing as seasoned musicians, still the same band members!...
Love this band always great live met them in 1983 backstage with A flock of seagulls. AWESOME ALL AROUND
What an Awesome meeting
I was there in HS when MTV was invented and so on. Not the same MTV as today of course, it was sort of GOOD back then 30 years ago.
+mos 8541 Right on!
the main difference is that back then it had music-themed programming almost exclusively. Once it discovered 'reality tv' (i.e. "The Real World"), that was the beginning of the end for musical programming on that channel. They had to invent a new channel - VH1 - to bring the viewers musical programming.
There should be an "I love this" button
thank you MTV! Not even 91X put this into rotation until you made it happen. The best of the early 80s.
The haunting echos of this song will ring forever! Best Fixx song EVER! Best version too
Before 1982, there was no music being made like this (sound and lyrical consciousness). The Fixx may have been given to us to warn that the Fixx is in, and it sure looks like it now in the 2020s!
This is my favorite version of "Red Skies"(the original) :)... It's so haunting and raw-in ur face!! I used 2 love singing 2 this when I was 7 back in 1982...Cy has this great voice that's captivating...One of my fav The Fixx songs!!!
The world famous "underground" radio program "Coast To Coast A.M." has played this song and "Stand or Fall" as bumper music in between segments for years! I love both songs.
Incredible live version. This must be 'My Night' for having a few drinks, feeling good, putting the headphones on and falling into the Rabbit Hole of UA-cam and finding ALL sorts of cool shit.
These guys are pure talent. Always liked this band - been listening to them since the 80’s. They don’t get enough credit in my opinion.
Best version of this song. Everything rocks. The bass. The vocalist. The echoing vocals. Liked it years ago, and like it now. It's kind of timeless.
The Fixx was one of my favorite bands during the best decade the 80's!
BRILLIANT song from a BRILLIANT band ,these guys are genius songwriters and excellent musicians all of them! Lovely guys too since I met them twice!
I used to listen to this album nonstop. It’s still held up! I was right back then.
I had a room plastered with Fixx, Bowie, Smiths, and Roxy posters in suburban Denver in 1985. I didn’t know how good I had it.
Used to dance and dance to this and so many other great 80s songs in the clubs..
Laura Metheny, me to 🙌
It was popular in clubs in Europe, too.

I still rock this on vinyl.
Orange glen high school days in California. Can’t believe it takes me back so much.
I saw The Fixx and Flock of Seagulls open for The Police back in August 1983 at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts, awesome show!!! 👍
Still a great song now as it was in the 80s. Loved it!!! The soundtrack of my teenage years. MTV was great with videos like this.. ❤️
Yes indeed Karen, think back often of the eighties, from songs, movies, President, the Pope, we literally had it all. Thank You Jesus that YT still has the Awesome music. 😊
Kick ass song to this day! True music with only voice & instruments. Can't beat it or remake it..
70 and still listening 🎉
I was blown away when I first heard this in 1982 as a 13 year old. Still feel it now listening to it today x
So awesome!!!!!!!!!
So many weird and magical memories ...
This song was to cool. It blew my mind in 1982 remember if your old enough. Man what a song. Dam good.I lived through it.

I saw them live in Hollywood 12 years ago. Same great band and incredible singer.
December 2 2023 and I'm reminiscing about when this song came out when I was a freshman in high school.
This is the version I was most familiar with. This was my introduction to The Fixx. It came on MTV late one summer night with Saved By Zero. I needed that Fixx ever since.
The vocal on this live version is just incredible
I recall seeing these guys at a Nightclub in MI in 1982, Jaggers.....
THAT...was fantastic.
I've been privileged to see them multiple times in St Louis because we love them.. they have come through multiple times to play in concert.. many times for free.. gotta love that!! Plus they were great live!!
THE EMOTION AND DEPTH OF COMPLEXITY OF THIS SONG IS SOOOOOOOOOOOO INCREDIBLE.!
Miss the original MTV!
I can still remember when they first appeared on TV. Was partying with a former boss at his condo., then MTV debuted.
Was Aug./Sept., 1981
great 80s song! when mtv played music videos 24/7!
I agree 100%. These guys songs were all awesome, especially "One way or another." I had a chance to see them in concert back in 1983 in Oakland, Ca - they opened for The Police, and when they (The Fixx) played "Red Skies" everyone started throwing up crushed soda cups as frisbees, lighting lighters and "Going Crazy" (the lead singer shouted this out after the song) - for me, it was, and still is, the most euphoric experience I have ever had in a concert!
Shuttered Room was my father’s favorite album 💿.
I love everything about this, from the nice, dense synth pads to the chiming clean guitar tone... why does no one do that today!?
Thumbs up for listening this super hit still in 2022.
This song reminds me of the waves crashing around my ankles at Croatan Beach. Young, and not giving a damn about anything because life was perfect. The beauty of the sun and tide with careless youth was a formula for a sublime day of endless music and laughter. Memories are like the tickler file of your mind, and I enjoy flipping thru the 80's files of my mind, the memories are documented precise, concise, and I have not one friggin regret. Forever young...
very well said!
Thank you, I said it from my heart...

One of my favorite Fixx songs. I always like the bands lyrics.
I hear this song is about nuclear war. Maybe so but now I am fitting it into it being about the Apocalypse yet they had no idea when recording it.
I truly forgot how amazing this band is! I havent heard them in a long time and now i cant get enough! Many of their musical peers have nothing but the highest praise for them!
The vocal on this is outstanding.
1982,this was the year The Fixx opened for The Police and what a great concert that was...
