  • How to replace a test the health of a capacitor while leaving the AC unit running. This will dramatically speed up the process of diagnosing a capacitor. You don’t have to remove the capacitor to test it. All you need is a multimeter and a calculator. If you are an HVAC technician checking multiple air conditioners a day, you are going to want to learn this hack.
The method of testing a capacitor is only recommended for experienced techs.

No one showed me or was willing to teach me either. I had to hover ask questions even if stupid questions get laughed at even get fired for lack of experience. I never gave up. I kept up the fight and learned on my own. I'm a super tech? Nope, there's still a lot to learn in this trade. Don't ever give up on a dream!

Not my preferred way of checking a capacitor but I definitely appreciate you guys sharing this kind of content. Please keep them coming.

I would like to have seen you pull the power, take a picture of the capacitor leads, pull the leads off and then check the capacitor with the meter and see if you get a similar reading.

Prefer the traditional way also you don’t have to disconnect the commons to test just Herm or fan. But interesting way. Good info.

We call this checking power factor at work
Only gets done if it’s a new installation nd we’re getting issues with unit.
    Thanks for the post

Neat method. Typical tolerances for large electrolytic capacitors are plus and minus 20% - so a 35 uF cap can measure around 28 to 42 uF. I suspect even new capacitors may not read in circuit values within tolerance because uof temperature variations and reformation of the caps aas they are in use.

AC capacitor biggest scam in industry. My father in law mechanical engineer busted many dishonest mechanics!!

How so? Are we talking cost or they were simply misdiagnosing?

Question:: Would the outside fan just run if capacitor is bad??
Just room temperature air coming out of vents inside

These capacitors are dual capacitors with a common. So yes the fan part of the capacitor can work while the compressor or herm side does not. These capacitors are about 20$ on Amazon. They charge 250 to 400 to install one. Easy to do if you cut power and discharge the cap. Not maintenance advice. At your own risk

If you want your system to last replace the caps every 10 years because if a capacitor is weak it'll but strain on other components & cause them to fail prematurely do that & a system usally lasts until it completely rots away...unless it's a heil, goodman or arcoaire they usally don't make it to the 10 year mark

Seems a lot slower than just pulling the disconnect

You are a tech and should know where all wires go on that capacitor. If you cross simple wires on that capacitor on that small 3-5 ton condenser maybe you should not call yourself a technician. That capacitor wires disconnected as cap stays in place while i check MFD all in under 2 minutes.

Saw 🪚 a similar video last week. I have a basic multimeter. Learning this method is priceless.
And I'm just getting into thr field 🏑
