Yeah, you're probably right, but it's best to replace it with a new one even if the old dual run cap was good. You don't know how long that old one is going to last. He did it to avoild a call back I assume.
It's obvious that you have a great deal of experience with HVAC.....and you have an upstanding/outstanding work ethic. The industry need more guys like you, that's for sure! It's such a pleasure to watch you go through the troubleshooting the way you do.......I have learned a lot! So thanks so much!
Looks similar to my LENNOX seer 10 in Arizona . 25 years old. Never put freon in yet . I do my own maintenance . coil cleaning , capacitor and contactor replacements every 2 years . Got spares for everything . Thanks TED
Sweet...Good thing they didn't call the last HVAC that came out there! Our condenser is an Amana 4 Ton R22 installed June of 1991. It's on its original capacitor and fan motor and never leaked. They put a slab 5 ton evaporator with it. We use it 4 months of the year usually and its a good 95 to 105 during those summer months. August is the worst as it rarely cools down at night enough to not be needed. Planning to install a new fan motor and capacitor as the fan blade isn't coasting to a stop as well as it used to. Going with a Nidec US Motors Mojave as it has "ball bearings" vs. self aligning sleeve bearings. Hope it keeps on going and going...
You can drop some light lubricant into the holes at the two ends of the motor housing to improve the shaft coast down. I got mine last more than two seasons with that trick. I have a 2 - 1/2 Ton Carrier condenser installed in 1996.
Never seen a booster cap connected like that. But I have seen several times where someone had a "Buddy" replace a capacitor and made a mess of things. Have a good one.
Well, conceivably, but this isn't a DC power supply. An AC motor capacitor discharges on every half-cycle and should discharge through the motor winding when power is removed, shouldn't it?
I have an old Janitrol 2 ton r22 unit that looks exactly like that. It was install in 1985. Now in 2024 it still runs great and never had any problems except replaced the capacitor once about 10 years ago. We are having a major heat wave here in Dayton, OH with 100* temps now. Our home has never gotten over 71 when set at 68. We set it and never turn it off or change the setting. Last year I bought a new fan motor with blades, capacitor and relay just in case through a Goodman distributer. Need to paint the cover though.
Ted, what amazes me is of all the units I see you work on, I rarely see one with ecu condenser fan. I've had one for a number of years (didn't have a clue when the guy put it in.). I'm guessing they are cheaper on the front end for the service company?
I've got one very similar to the that unit on my house. Knock on wood, it's still running and even cycling during 100+ F days here in Oklahoma. It sits in the sun too. It is rattly as you said, but I'd beg to differ on being junk. It's lasted darn near 30 years lol.
Had a Goodman at my old house in Florida. After 1 year the plastic drain pain cracked and started leaking. Since it is attached to the evaporator it was replaced under warranty. Also had to have a valve replaced in it. Not covered under warranty at that time. Never again.
I have the same one R22 unit from 2000 and it’s still going strong never needed a refill or anything. Might clean the fins later this year but apart from that it’s still going and probably will for the next 15 years
I lived in far northwest Houston in ‘79. I saw the Goodman bldg being built (Bingle Rd). They’ve since moved. BTW, I remember something about Janitrol is a Goodman.
A Goodman replaced the outside unit that I had in 1994; the year that I bought my house. The inside unit, Singer, was original to the house when it was built in 1968. I personally replaced the furnace's gas control valve in 2020. The compressor on the outside unit finally conked out in early 2022. That's when I had both inside and outside units replaced. That Goodman/Singer combo were workhorses. I don't know the tonnage size of the unit, but it's a small house; 1,100 sq ft. Thank you for sharing your video and for having this channel.
Once in the middle of the summer doing a bunch of calls I had flipped the breaker off in a panel like that one. I quickly tried to discharge the run cap before touching the terminals. A big ball of fire hit my nut driver. The breaker was bad on one leg. Just like you the compressor shut off when I flipped it. That would have hurt, lol.
It was some DIY, but my mom's AC fan capacitor failed. I got a bamboo stick and have the fan a spin and it started. So, until the capacitor could be replaced, I told my mom to give it an assist with the stick. She would wait until it got hot, turn it to very cold and give the fan a spin. It only needed to be done a couple of times a day. I told her to turn the temperature higher at the thermostat when it turned off or she got too cold.
What does the hard start capacitor do? Are they necessary? When are they necessary? I am a retired Auto Parts Counterman, and my second career I was a Product Engineering Manufacturing Technician at Intel. I know how car AC works and how capacitors work, but I don’t know anything about these capacitors. I’ve heard good and bad about them, and would like to learn more about them. Thx!
I just replaced my 1989 Bryant R22 3.5 Ton Package unit on 7/8/2024 it baked in the Arizona sun on my roof and lived the last 4 year thats how long I've owned this house with the wrong refrigerant in it. Who knows how long its been like this or it was contaminated. Pressures were always high on both sides but it still worked and cooled but was starting to limp, poor thing was sick looking lol if I get 1/2 as long out of the new unit ill be happy York 5 ton lx unit
?? What’s your take on the new Freon requirement starting in 2025? I know replacement day will come for our 1997 Goodman heat pump - just hate to be the Guinea pig when things switchover. Thanks for your input.
Mandate is 25 but places have been using it since last year on certain types of units. This year most manufacturers are starting to switch your standard split systems over to the new refrigerant type they're choosing to use. It sucks more for the technician side. The cooling side should be similar to R410a that's currently used. Your 1997 unit uses R22 most likely which isn't even imported into the country anymore as of like 4 years ago. R22 usually is colder but colder isn't the point of a/c it's just the byproduct of running. Newer refrigerants are for air conditioning meaning they run longer to remove humidity instead of just running fast and cold to just change temperature. Changing the temperature doesn't help if the humidity doesn't change and stays 60% or something crazy like that. You may not have that issue but some installs do because of the mentality of installers back then was to just put a bigger unit in. Now when sized correctly it runs longer and puts out temps through the ductwork in the 40's and 50's
Curious as well. My package unit is on it's last legs and uses R-22(2008). If I replace it now I want to be sure to get a unit with the new freon vs the current stuff(410a). Right now there are 2 competing choices....R-454b and R-32. R-32 has been used for several years in other countries while R-454b is new and unproven.
I wonder why he didn't straighten the fins that were all smashed closed then clean them out most good ac teck will and check the A coil and if it dirty take the side panel off and clean it to last check the filter.
I'll take an old unit any day over the so called new trash.. My grandpa has an old 1950's filco fridge in his basement and it's still working perfectly
regardless if the hardstart was wired up wrong its a dis-service to your customer to remove it from the system instead of just wiring it up properly the hard start can only help that old weak compressor now whats gonna happen is they are gonna eventually call up someone else and get sold another hardstart when they already had one to being with
People always liked to hate the Goodman equipment , but if it’s sized , and installed properly they work just fine . The higher SEER Rated units had a better compressor as well !!!
I have 4 Goodman's that were installed in 1997. Still going strong every day. Never added R22 - just cap's about every 2 to 5 years. I have 5 more at another location installed in 2006. Not one single issue with any of those. I won't buy anything but Goodman.
Did the original wiring have separate capacitors for fan and compressor motors? The new capacitor has both in one, but last-guy wired in only the motor capacitor? You fixed all with a new capacitor, which is inexpensive anyway.
That hard start wasn't even wired correctly- maybe that is what you meant by fake? Both wires do NOT go to Herm - only 1 does. Other goes to Common -on a dual run capacitor. I would have hooked up it correctly. I gather their compressor was getting old so someone suggested it be put in for a reason.
According to some veteran technician, a hard start kit like the one shown on this video can be used as a diagnostic tool to find if the compressor run capacitor is actually bad, but you do not have one replacement handy. It would keep your condenser running while you are waiting for the newly ordered one to arrive. After the new one is installed, you can disconnect this tool from the circuit and store it somewhere close by for use in the future. Remember the hard start only work for the compressor not for the fan. I have one hard start unit for use on both of my condensers without stocking two different size run capacitors.
The HS was useless and the customer never knew they had it and it has zero value to the HO. And, as a tech, I wouldn't use it and I won't charge to HO for disposal! lol
If you ever walk up to a Goodman Condenser you are walking up to a unit with a dirty coil. NO MATTER what it may look like its DIRTY.. And its the main reason they eat capacitors like kids eat pop tarts......
So, where was the "FAKE" component? Improper installation does not mean components aren't real. What parts house sells "fake" components? And please tell me it wasn't you that put "AC ReNew" in there!
Steve Lav did a video today working on Lawn Mowers, I guess He is Caught up on Servicing Oil Burners because he hasn't shown any Videos of Him and Miss Molly in The Truck for about 4 days.

Just in case someone in our universe has any doubts on getting into the ac repair business.
That right there is the difference between a hack and a technician. Good work!
What is sad is that no manufacturer makes anything today that will last that long!
I got a funny feeling that the 5uf section of that run cap was good and that 5uf taped up capacitor had been there much longer..
Yeah, you're probably right, but it's best to replace it with a new one even if the old dual run cap was good. You don't know how long that old one is going to last. He did it to avoild a call back I assume.

Old copper is different. Wish new ones had the same copper structure. Too thin now or they mix in aluminum end loops on the coils.
My 2004 Goodman just got its second capacitor. The first replacement was about 10 years ago. Still runs cold, no leaks.
“Should I be confident enough to put this door on” is something I say everyday lol
Sweet...Good thing they didn't call the last HVAC that came out there!

Love it! That hard start cap sure had an easy life even if the unit didn't! ;)
Never seen a booster cap connected like that. But I have seen several times where someone had a "Buddy" replace a capacitor and made a mess of things. Have a good one.
That cap was changed with god knows how many volts and you touched it with bare hand, glad you weren’t shocked man!thanks
Well, conceivably, but this isn't a DC power supply. An AC motor capacitor discharges on every half-cycle and should discharge through the motor winding when power is removed, shouldn't it?

Did you test the amperage of the motor to make sure it wasn't running over?
I like how clean you do your work, not just a big jumble of wires everywhere, my dad you to say how your work looks is like signing your name on it,
Our Bryant is also from 1996. The only maintenance I've ever done on it is change the caps and wires during all that time, still runs/cools very well.
Ted, what amazes me is of all the units I see you work on, I rarely see one with ecu condenser fan. I've had one for a number of years (didn't have a clue when the guy put it in.). I'm guessing they are cheaper on the front end for the service company?
This is a excellent video showing a pro doing it right, not only right but showing how easy it is, thank you

Good video ! i like that Little Folding Seat u Have. do you have a video on it ? & where did u get it if u don't mind me asking.
Amazon would have it.
I love those simple designs, no boards outside they last a lot longer.
I lived in far northwest Houston in ‘79. I saw the Goodman bldg being built (Bingle Rd). They’ve since moved.
BTW, I remember something about Janitrol is a Goodman.
Great vide. Thanks for sharing. Didn't you need to discharge the capacitor's before handling them?
Well obviously the hard start cap was not doing anything, just put it back the RIGHT WAY and call it a day..
A Goodman replaced the outside unit that I had in 1994; the year that I bought my house. The inside unit, Singer, was original to the house when it was built in 1968. motor will burnout if u keep doing that. motor draws higher amps with a non functioning cap. Get a capacitor on that asap !
that makes me feel good my Heil Quaker HVAC is a 1986 and its cooling right now in this S.C. July , weather 98 degrees temperature

People love to talk trash about Goodman, but they seem to usually last a long time.
There are a lot of mid 90’s Goodmans still do their job Around these parts of SC.
I Agree
I just replaced my 1989 Bryant R22 3.5 Ton Package unit on 7/8/2024 it baked in the Arizona sun on my roof and lived the last 4 year thats how long I've owned this house with the wrong refrigerant in it. Just love your work brother. But please carry a bannister brush so all that trash around the wiring etc. can be cleaned up properly.
Hello, my name is Bayram. I am from Turkmenistan. How long will the training for this cleaning be for me?
The ghost hard start kit was acting like an anti back emf cushion the way it was wired.
I wonder why he didn't straighten the fins that were all smashed closed then clean them out most good ac teck will and check the A coil and if it dirty take the side panel off and clean it to last check the filter.
Wow so I think they put hard start in and then jumped the fan cap onto the that, to make up the mfds. Keep on Cooling Goody.
I'll take an old unit any day over the so called new trash.. My grandpa has an old 1950's filco fridge in his basement and it's still working perfectly
Yup, but probably costs him $50 a month in electricity just for that.
And $300/mo for the a/c 😂
It’s probably leaking r-22 which is bad for the environment but I’m not spending 60$ a month or 100 to keep it going
regardless if the hardstart was wired up wrong its a dis-service to your customer to remove it from the system instead of just wiring it up properly the hard start can only help that old weak compressor now whats gonna happen is they are gonna eventually call up someone else and get sold another hardstart when they already had one to being with
Very DIY

The family dog always plays a part in every good hvac video
that super boos start assist was not wired correctly. They had both leads of the kit wired on the HERM terminal :)
you service those as if it was your own. respect.
That's a nice seating stool.Whats the parts number?
What’s the difference between a hard start cap and a soft start setup?
Did you forget to flip the breaker back ON for the other unit. It wasn't running when you left?
I have 4 Goodman's that were installed in 1997. Still going strong every day. Never added R22 - just cap's about every 2 to 5 years. I have 5 more at another location installed in 2006. Not one single issue with any of those. I won't buy anything but Goodman.
8:52 The caps for the line shutoffs are missing!
Reset the t stat to bypass the delay
Im glad to see you finally do a capacitor video. Lol.

A nice easy job Ted, i always look forward to listening for your squeeking van door on arrival at the job 😉👍 Au
I too look forward to the squeaky van door . You know it's the little things in life that mean the most! 😆😎👍
@@sknight0391 Yes,, It would be a shame if Ted oiled it, them we'd be disappointed 🤫 Au

Should have installed hard start on correctly, he just took homeowners hard start. Not cool.
I would have put the hard start back in. It's the customer's property and it was likely perfect since it was never actually hooked up.
The HS was useless and the customer never knew they had it and it has zero value to the HO. And, as a tech, I wouldn't use it and I won't charge to HO for disposal! lol
He’ll sell it to the next service call. 😉

Thanks for your videos......
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
First cap bandit of the season.. nice work Ted
As always I like your videos another nice work done ✔️
Watching your videos from BAY AREA CA,
I would put that hard start back on
👍 Another happy customer. Keep up the good work. I wonder how much the last guy robed them for that last capacitor combo.
Cute pup. Thx.
Cheap thermistor type hard start they usually burn out. I use a CPS hard start 5-2-1 only one that works well.
I've just come across a R22 system a little earlier in age. Always just needs a little TLC.
2:55 the HS wasn't even hooked up properly.
I would sure like to meet the “yuk-yuk” brothers service tech that installed the hard start kit & also taped the fan capacitor to a bunch of wires.
You can't stop a Goodman!
Cowboy, I love your work !
Yep mine is 91 r22
Good one Ted! Perfect ASMR right there
So, where was the "FAKE" component?
Improper installation does not mean components aren't real.
What parts house sells "fake" components?
And please tell me it wasn't you that put "AC ReNew" in there!
Its snowing in Buffalo, NY today. I didn't even get my gauges out.
Distilled white vinegar or bleach monthly for the pvc AC lines?
Distilled yes.
Bleach is a no
We have been using rossite the past 8 years..
Great results..
Steve Lav did a video today working on Lawn Mowers, I guess He is Caught up on Servicing Oil Burners because he hasn't shown any Videos of Him and Miss Molly in The Truck for about 4 days.
Why not just keep the cap and hook it up correct for them
1996... dang man you aint gotta call me old like that LOL
First time I've seen an AC repairman not tell the homeowner that she needs a new AC unit.
That unit is 2 years newer than my Goodman
You checked that 5mfd capacitor with your fieldpiece and you didn't zero it out, Is your meter defective?
Plus that hard start cap wasn't fake just wired wrong, correct?
The new stuff isn't as durable as the old school 22 units! If you know how to work on those things you can make them last a long time!
Nice job, Ted, I'm with ya leave the hard start out if it's not needed
Nice work man 😊good old Goodman 😊
That's what i need is a hard start...😂
i need a reset
wow the wiring on that unit...
Cap should have been reinstalled correctly. It can only help the compressor. Carrier recommends hard start kits on all old compressors. The contactor looked old too, it should have been checked better.
I like to use a higher rated capacitor when I'm replacing a capacitor on a unit that has a hard start hooked up to it. That allows me to get rid from the usually loose hard start. It's basically just a parallel wired capacitor.
Not a professional or best of practices decision….Risk overheating and or failure of motor windings.
1996! That's pretty darn good. It's practically a dinosaur!
Not really. It's old but not by what we see standards. Lol!
im confused. Dont the hard start cap and the regular cap serve the exact same purpose?
Was that a visit from the Run Cap Bandit?
I was told to connect 3 phase direct to the capacitor if the compressor fails to start
WiFi hard start cap.
I salvaged a goodman that was replaced by the homeowner and 10 years after its so called retirement it still cranks (cant forget to knock on wood),. Older is better at least in this case. why did someone put so many capacitors on there?
When Ricky Bobby hooks up a hard start😂
Wonder who put the hard start on?
I truly miss working sometimes but then again I have to remind myself that I’m retired .
WHO says Goodman doesn't last..❓
