Thank you very much for this video. My HVAC service tech told me to keep replacement capacitors on hand because the price for him to replace a capacitor is close to $400. He showed me the service cost estimate. The capacitor in my unit has a label and I bought the capacitor for $14 off amazon about 6 months ago. Upstairs heat stopped working overnight. I tested the capacitor (after disconnect removed and breakers turned off) just like in this video. Capacitor was bad. Total time to replace was 25 minutes because I was being careful etc. I saved close to $400 and upstairs heat wouldn’t have been repaired until the service guy could get here in a couple days. This video is super helpful.
Same thing happened to me. I caved in because I'm not handy at all, but it sucks knowing that I vastly overpaid for such a cheap part. I was charged $359 to replace the ac capacitor, and that was WITH a discount...
Just a quick tip from a maintenance guy, who knows the basics. Before you take any wires apart-get your cell phone out and take a picture. This can save you a lot of aggrivation.

My AC suddenly doesn't cool. Like here, the condenser fan works, but it doesn't blow hot air. So I think the compressor might not turn on at all. Could it be a failed capacitor like this video?
Don't rely too much on the multimeter to tell you if your run capacitor is bad. My heat pump died last night, and it had an 8 year old capacitor in it. I checked the run capacitor as shown in this video, and it was actually slightly closer to being on spec than the new one that I was replacing it with. I learned long ago to have spare parts for every appliance I own/have. AC/Furnace, freezer/refrigerator. By spare parts I mean the common parts that go out, I once lost 600 dollars of food when my freezer failed because of a 26 dollar part and it took a week to get one in, no one in or near Omaha had one in stock. I have also had my kids needs parts for their ACs, I just happened to have one in my spares and then just reordered it at the cheaper price.

I have this same model, same capacitor. My compressor won't turn on, I tested it and it tested very close to 70 and 5 depending on the leads. I replaced it anyhow and that fixed my issue. How can it be that the old one tested the same as the new one but still didn't work? Is there something else to test besides the 70 and 5 reading to confirm it really is not blown?
I have a question? I’ve changed everything that could be a problem with my AC unit. Capacitor, control board, and the thermostat batteries and the whole thermostat. Situation. An AC unit I opened up to test has 2 capacitors. a Dual 40/5 uf 6% and a single 5uf 5% The Dual only has connections on 2 of the posts (yellow on Herm, Orange and Purple on Common) and not on the 3rd post (Fan) that measures 5uf. Are the 3rd terminal on the dual capacitor (that rates 5uf) and the single capacitor interchangeable?

it seems to me that when my Unit starts up in (heating control) stays at a constant speed with ever increasing in speed, thereby it seems not enough air from the fan is being push thru the duct to warm the entire home? what can cause this ?
So if the cap is a dual run why does t it have two wires for the common? Just wondering and I like the tip when you mentioned no hot air blowing out of the ODFM I didn’t think that could be a symptom. I do always check the suction and liquid line.

How do I find MFD specs for an old, old residential package unit in a old mobile home park when specs are no longer legible on compressor, run cap, rating plate, and cap MFD cannot be measured at all with a meter?
Can a capacitor be bad and the compressor and fan is still working I’m just not getting any cold air, but everything seems to be working, lines are sweating new filter inside, coils cleaned but I was under the impression that if you had a bad capacitor, the compressor wouldn’t work
The top of the capacitor has markings by each piece for "fan" "c" and "herm", you can kinda see it in the video on the old one. Someone can confirm this, but the specific fork off of each top doesn't matter as it is one piece that transfers electricity.
no, the condenser fan isn't rated for a 5mfd, the label on the fan motor usually states what capacitor is needed, in your case, 35mfd for compressor and 3mfd for fan motor, I'm guessing its a Rheem or ruud unit.
Update: I just replaced mine but unfortunately, I still have the same room temperature air coming from the vent. It’s only been about 10 minutes though. Should you be able to tell instantly?
The only problem you didn’t mention is a lot of times those capacitors don’t blow for no reason you should’ve tested the amperage drawon the other devices
Great Scott, what is that cap, and how in the world do you short that puppy out for zap free insurance? That thing is pretty cool and definitely reduces inventory!
No in my world, the unit is 2 inches away from the house and the mechanical compartment is facing the house. I have to do this awkward lean over to see everything. It's rare to see an install with service in mind.
Today Google news had a story on a woman in Phoenix who had her AC break and had to suffer for days. They also named the company, Penguin Air,.that charged $540 for replacing a $20 capacitor. Seems a bit high for an hour of work.
Yes, 3M BLACK ones. White zipties have no UV resistance and will break easily after a few months of sunlight exposure. I don't even keep the white ones on my truck. Also, that's a heat pump. Sometimes it's a condenser, sometimes it's an evaporator. Easier and less confusion to just use indoor and outdoor coils. I also use the terms indoor fan, outdoor fan and combustion fan when describing the various fans on HVAC systems.

It has 25/10+=60% capacitor just like one on your video has 4,3,and 2 prongs and a hi, low, medium switch.
What if your fan isn't running? Is that a sign of a bad capacitor?
Thank you for your video. Question: If the capacitor labels 440VAC only on it, can I use 440/370VAC?
You can ALWAYS use a capacitor with a HIGHER voltage rating.
Good info that is a very fancy capacitor
Good video man, thanks.👌
How does a run cap go bad what are causes?
Love your channel. Thank you.
Thank you for showing me how to wire a capacitor
How do I find MFD specs for an old, old residential package unit in a old mobile home park when specs are no longer legible on compressor, run cap, rating plate, and cap MFD cannot be measured at all with a meter?
Thanks for video 👍
Can a capacitor be bad and the compressor and fan is still working I’m just not getting any cold air, but everything seems to be working, lines are sweating new filter inside, coils cleaned but I was under the impression that if you had a bad capacitor, the compressor wouldn’t work
anyone know if a low capacitor can impact heating and not cooling?
Ours quit working, it wants to try to engage but won’t, is it the capicitar that causes
When the capacitor is not marked on top with a single how do you know which wire goes where?
The top of the capacitor has markings by each piece for "fan" "c" and "herm", you can kinda see it in the video on the old one. Someone can confirm this, but the specific fork off of each top doesn't matter as it is one piece that transfers electricity.
Can you use a 35/5 capacitor in replace of a 35/3?
no, the condenser fan isn't rated for a 5mfd, the label on the fan motor usually states what capacitor is needed, in your case, 35mfd for compressor and 3mfd for fan motor, I'm guessing its a Rheem or ruud unit.
amann910 it’s ruud unit. My local hvac guy says it’s acceptable to use but I went ahead and bought a 35/3
@@rubberman2006 You can use it temporarily and it will work but you don't want to leave it in there.
@@amann910 what happens if you don't use the right size
Best to use what the manufacture recommends but in a pinch for a day or two, probably its okay until you get the right one.
Thank God for Vo-Tech!
Concise, helpful video. Thank you.
Nice, was able to quickly figure out why mi ac wasn't cooling but the condenser fan was able to run at a slower pace.
Hi is ok if run capacitor is rusty?
Where did you get that meter ?
Very good video i appriciate it.
EXCELLENT! 👏🏼👏🏼
Really helpful thank you 👍🏾👊🏾
Glad it was helpful!
Very cool video
where is the heater board?
So many customers are gonna watch this
Update: I just replaced mine but unfortunately, I still have the same room temperature air coming from the vent. It’s only been about 10 minutes though. Should you be able to tell instantly?
Compressor could not be running either that or low on refrigerant!
In California you don't pass city inspections installed that way....
Too late Bryan , the YT HVAC popo caught you red handed using an impact !
Noooooo!!!
Please tell me why can't you remove screws with an Impact? They only strip out when you put them in with an Impact. Right?
Is that both a start and run capacitor? Or do you only need the start? Thank you
Today Google news had a story on a woman in Phoenix who had her AC break and had to suffer for days. They also named the company, Penguin Air,.that charged $540 for replacing a $20 capacitor. Seems a bit high for an hour of work.
Great job sir 😘🇮🇳
can you buy a good zip tie they seem to break through time under no stress?
called them condensers back than lol
Yes, 3M BLACK ones. White zipties have no UV resistance and will break easily after a few months of sunlight exposure. I don't even keep the white ones on my truck.
Also, that's a heat pump. Sometimes it's a condenser, sometimes it's an evaporator. Easier and less confusion to just use indoor and outdoor coils. I also use the terms indoor fan, outdoor fan and combustion fan when describing the various fans on HVAC systems.
Great video. Thank you
Thank you for this
Thanks for the video =)
Excelente capacitors ,buen trabajo y buen video saludos !!!
