As a new subscriber I see in your May 12th edition that you featured OGD bonded 100 also an excellent drop. Totally agree with you on Tin Cup 10 year - it is the most balanced sweet oak experience I’ve ever tasted on a less than 90 proof whiskey. The flavor and finish are long and enjoyable. As a proof hound it would be very interesting to taste this at cask strength and see how similar or different the experience would be. Excellent bottle and one every bourbon or whiskey lover should have on the bar top imho.
A shop South of me had a 6 year Old Elk Wheat Whiskey single barrel store pick, and it was delicious! Vanilla Cream frosting up front, spice cake on the finish. One of the best bottles of 2021 for me - even bunkered a bottle. I released two American Whiskeys last year - one a bourbon-rye blend, and the other a 100% wheat-mashbill light whiskey. Only distributed in Wisconsin, but if you'd like samples, let me know!

I can not give you any points of view, Kurt, because we don't get any of those in Norway, and Michter's is the only one I've heard of. It's truly a fascinating selection you have in the US.
Great picks, Kurt. Really glad you included the Stranahan's Blue Peak. So tasty, yet it is the lowest priced expression in the Stranahan's line. The Blue Peak and Redwood Empire Lost Monarch are my two favorite non-bourbon, non-rye whiskies, although Lost Monarch is hardly underrated.
I had to drive 700 miles up to New Hampshire yesterday to find the Michter's American Whiskey in stock. (Well, sort of, I was heading here for vacation anyway, but found it listed as available. Picking up two today if it's true.) I'm also a fan of the TinCup (both the American Whiskey and the Rye) for the price. I've never seen the 10 year.
I'm always on the lookout for new whiskeys to give as presents. For fans of the Maker Mark 46 and 101, would the Old Elk wheated bottle be a good gift?
What a controversial heading!🤣 I knew Michter's had to make the list, but thought it would be American. Very nice pour. Haven't been able to find the 10 year Tin Cup. Have my eye out for it. Informative video as always. Thank you!
Great lineup! Love my Michter's, the Sour Mash is one of my favorite bottles, keeping an eye out for a toasted Sour Mash. That 10 year Tin Cup is fantastic! Keep up the great work! Love the content! 🥃
@@slbdrinks interesting…. I made the purchase and it was not as the glass I had at the restaurant. It’s in the wild turkey 101 price range and now my final thoughts are go wild turkey.

Great Stuff Kurt. To me you can't go wrong with Mellow Corn though. for under $20 a BiB corn whiskey its just fantastic juice. But I am always on the lookout for that Old Elk though. Its hard to find by me
Glad to see three Colorado Whiskeys on the list. I've been watching a lot of your videos. I'll be driving from CO to OH at the end of the month to go to the football hall of fame. I'm going to have to make a few stops on the way to find some good bourbon.
I tried Stranahans for the first time yesterday and now I’m scouring the internet to find as much info as possible. I’m not a big time whiskey connoisseur but it is my favorite alcohol.
I just started drinking whiskey with a purpose in August....and it has been a fun journey thus far. I'm a fan of the Uncle Nearest 1884 which my friend introduced me to on vacation 2 weeks ago. As a newer drinker this video is a gem.
I do like sour mash whiskey. Anything from Jack Daniels. George Dickle is good and Davidson Reserve. Don't find many reviews of sour mash though. It seems whiskey connoisseurs snub sour mash. I don't know why.
@@tpoz48 how so? Sour mash means that some amount of left over mash is used to start the fermentation on the next run. That’s it. Virtually ALL bourbon is distilled using this process. What are these “other bourbons”? Wilderness trail and Peerless use sweet mash. Other than that, all sour mash
@@slbdrinks never met a style I didn’t like. Plenty of bourbon, scotch, rye, wheat, corn, Japanese, Irish have crossed my path. Always a winner to find somewhere.

I was set to sign off then I heard Uncle Nearest! And Tin Cup! Wish it were not cut so much. Expensive for you - cheaper at Sam’s. Have to look for Old Elk.
This is a great video topic and I really like your selection! I have the Stranahans myself and really like it. I would love to see your thoughts on Few Spirits American Straight Whiskey as well.
Tin Cup 10 year actually IS bourbon. It even says so on the tin cup topper, take a look. Pure MGP goodness and zero Stranahans blended in. So many people get this one confused with their other products.
Maybe true since I am not familiar with any other Tin Cup. I did find the Stranahans info online while researching but that doesn’t mean they were not wrong either.
Westland American Single Malt is delicious. I was impressed with how good it was for only being aged 3 years. I haven't had it in a while though, so maybe they have older stuff now.
Kurt you probably don't want to hear anything from me anymore but I thought I heard you mention something about getting into tequilas at some point. Yep, I spent probably 5-7 years going down that path and into the expensive brands ($15-20 a shot) that were only selling the expensive looking bottle but I do have a recommendation. Jose Cuervo Reservea De LA Famila. The first taste I took I had to look again to see if it was really tequila. Aged in oak so long I thought it was bourbon. At the time I bought it in '98 it was $50, quite affordable. Now it's $170 way above my pay grade. As a bartender I met others that worked in very upscale restaurants and so I'd get a discount. I also spent a month down in Cabo San Lucas and had a friend & fellow drinker that lived in Baja and he knew the hotspots so I started and the bottom shelf out of 5 and worked my way up to the top. The Cuervo is definitely a "sipping" tequila, something I thought was impossible. Sorry about urinating in your Cheerios!
No worries sir, I have enjoyed our conversation. Tequila is brand new to me speaking of sipper quality. I have learned a lot in a short period of time. I love to find tequilas with no additives, very pure and unadulterated. Thank you for your recommendation!
@@slbdrinks Kurt I deserve the reply you gave me so I apologize. Now, just for the record, ever since I was old enough to drink legally I've drank in blue collar bars. The comments I made on those whiskies were (Fitzgerald, Old Forester, etc) from recommendations that were from drinkers far older than I and yes I've tried them myself but only in a shooter. I've also started at the bottom and worked my way up drinking. From the age of 17-19 I was stationed on a ship homeported in Japan. I wasn't old enough to buy at the exchange so I had to buy the local whiskies. Tory's was the bottom shelf Suntory @ .85 a bottle. Suntory was $1.85 so when you're only making $80 a month you have to do what you're forced to do. This is how rotgut the Tory's was. Every once on a while I could get a petty office of age to buy me a bottle of Seagrams 7. I could turn it upright and guzzle/gulp it because it was so smooth compared to the Tory's. That Cuervo I recommend to you, start there and maybe work your way down. It's always nice to know what the top is first. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I know I was and if it was available and not so expensive I'd love to treat myself again. I used to live next door to a salesman for a liquor distributor in a capital city. Once in awhile he'd invite me over for some 'sample tasting'. I've drank some very expensive Scotches including Japanese ones that were so far out of my pocketbook that I'd never even give them a glance. So bottom line it irks me a bit when I see some of those whiskies that you've shown to the uninitiated because if it's a first it might just turn them off altogether. 🤔 You're a good host and your backbar is quite impressive! BTW, I've owned a couple myself including in Thailand because I've had plenty of experience on both sides of one. Whiskey, it's not just for breakfast anymore! 😋
Very impressive sir. With all your ventures in life I hope you have come to a point to where you are enjoying everyday. I assume you are retired and if so you deserve it.
Ha! That was the most ill advised purchase of my whiskey journey. I put myself out there even though I knew to expect criticism in hopes others wouldn’t make the same mistake.
Whew! I was worried that you were gonna talk about not whiskey. :D Michter’s American Whiskey is super good and not bourbon. But I’m thinking it is only not bourbon because of using used barrels. ;) Haven’t tried their sour mash yet, but I’ll get that on my list. Thanks!
All bourbon is whiskey but, not all whiskey is bourbon. My hands down go to bourbon is Russell's Reserve 10...... affordable, 90 proof but still friendly, approachable, deliciousness 🤤
Why are these a whisky but not bourbon. Is it a lower corn content? What is it missing or how is it different than a similar bottle that is a bourbon??
Correct answer from our friend here. Could be multiple reasons but bourbons has to be at least 51% corn and aged in new American oak barrels. That’s the short and sweet explanation.
Michter's "Sour Mash" always seemed really silly to me. All their whiskey is sour mash. Virtually ALL whiskey distilled in the US is sour mash. Peerless and Wilderness Trail are 2 sweet mash distillers, but I don't know any others. Of course Old Elk is good, Look at their master distiller. Greg Metze was crushing whiskey at MGP for decades. Nice lineup.
@@jamesmorgan7299 which is why I haven’t bought any yet 😒. Been wanting a bottle of the uncut Cowboy bottling but at the price, not sure I’d take advantage.
@@whiskeygrunt772 yeah, I got bottle years ago when my friend graduated with his master. Cowboy it is not messing around and I got lucky when I stumbled on a bottle of balmorhea for 70. I was stationed up in Bremerton WA and they had it for 50% off at the package store.
@@jamesmorgan7299 You can also change your answer from "pretty sure" to "Garrison Brother's does sweet mash". Finally got around to checking out their website. Thanks for the heads up.
I literally had Stranahans Blue Peak typed out, at the start of the video, as as suggestion. Didn't think it would be on the list. Absolutely LOVE it. Colorado has some great American malt. Loved this video.
From what I can tell Tincup 10 is just MGP high rye bourbon cut down with Rocky Mountain water. The website doesn't say anything about the addition of Stranahan's in the 10 year as it does for the standard offering. Various websites seem to disagree on this point. Some say it does have Stranahan's while others say it does not and could actually be labeled bourbon even though it isn't.
You have a great channel, and we enjoy your videos very much. We have a small channel ourselves but have had little success with views and subscribers. Do you have any tips for a successful channel?

Great picks, Kurt. Really glad you included the Stranahan's Blue Peak. So tasty, yet it is the lowest priced expression in the Stranahan's line. The Blue Peak and Redwood Empire Lost Monarch are my two favorite non-bourbon, non-rye whiskies, although Lost Monarch is hardly underrated.
It’s unfortunate but I rarely see RE in my area.
Hopefully you will see the 10 yr soon. Started seeing it around me a couple weeks ago.
I'm always on the lookout for new whiskeys to give as presents. For fans of the Maker Mark 46 and 101, would the Old Elk wheated bottle be a good gift?
Most definitely!
Love the stanahans. And the Tincup is fantastic everyday sip with some deep notes
Yes!!
What a controversial heading!🤣 I knew Michter's had to make the list, but thought it would be American. Very nice pour. Haven't been able to find the 10 year Tin Cup. Have my eye out for it. Informative video as always. Thank you!
Keep looking for it! It’s worth it!
Great lineup! Love my Michter's, the Sour Mash is one of my favorite bottles, keeping an eye out for a toasted Sour Mash. That 10 year Tin Cup is fantastic! Keep up the great work! Love the content! 🥃
Wouldn't you like to try that Tin Cup @ Barrel Strength? Or at least 100 Proof? Just once?
Thank you! YES! Barrel strength tin cup 10 would be ridiculous!
Had Ten Cup for the first time tonight. Just exceptional. A new favorite
Wonderful! Glad you love it!
@@slbdrinks interesting…. I made the purchase and it was not as the glass I had at the restaurant. It’s in the wild turkey 101 price range and now my final thoughts are go wild turkey.
I was impressed with the tin cup 10 year .
Smooth ambler contradiction rye is also a great tasting whiskey .
Thanks for the recommendation!
I was blown away by the nose on the tin cup 10 year! I like the fact that I can have multiple pours of it without getting completely Shit Faced but still enjoy a full flavored whiskey
Great point lol! In all honesty I was very happy to find an 80 proof bourbon that is spectacular!
Great video thanks !
Now to find some Tin Cup whisky !
Thank you!
Great Stuff Kurt. To me you can't go wrong with Mellow Corn though. for under $20 a BiB corn whiskey its just fantastic juice. But I am always on the lookout for that Old Elk though. Its hard to find by me
Sorry to hear that. Where is your neck of the woods?
@@slbdrinks central New Jersey an hour out of Philly and NYC
Glad to see three Colorado Whiskeys on the list. I've been watching a lot of your videos. I'll be driving from CO to OH at the end of the month to go to the football hall of fame. I'm going to have to make a few stops on the way to find some good bourbon.
I tried Stranahans for the first time yesterday and now I’m scouring the internet to find as much info as possible. I’m not a big time whiskey connoisseur but it is my favorite alcohol.
I have 3 out of the 5. The Stranahans is decent.
I got a bottle of Uncle Nearest for my BDay last year! Purty good
Good deal!
I just started drinking whiskey with a purpose in August....and it has been a fun journey thus far. I'm a fan of the Uncle Nearest 1884 which my friend introduced me to on vacation 2 weeks ago. As a newer drinker this video is a gem.
Yes! I also like Uncle Nearest!
Just a tip, some places will sell you a small rating notebook where you can keep your notes in. That’s actually how I started tasting LOL
I do like sour mash whiskey. Anything from Jack Daniels. George Dickle is good and Davidson Reserve. Don't find many reviews of sour mash though. It seems whiskey connoisseurs snub sour mash. I don't know why.
Virtually all whiskey in America is sour mash. I can think of only 2 that aren't. Wilderness Trail and Peerless, which are both sweet mash.
@@whiskeygrunt772 You need to take some time and research how sour mash is distilled. It is a different process from other bourbons.
I am different than most you might see on UA-cam. Not that it makes me worse or better but I enjoy all types of whiskey. Why not??
@@slbdrinks never met a style I didn’t like. Plenty of bourbon, scotch, rye, wheat, corn, Japanese, Irish have crossed my path. Always a winner to find somewhere.
Majority wise my mini bar is bourbon few whiskeys(crown royal & jack daniel) tin cup I'm going to check out and old elk SLB your reviews help out a lot 🥃👍
Thank you!
I was set to sign off then I heard Uncle Nearest! And Tin Cup! Wish it were not cut so much. Expensive for you - cheaper at Sam’s. Have to look for Old Elk.
Agreed. Wish some of these could be closer to that 100 proof mark.
Whoohoo. Just in time for an early weekend. Great stuff.
Great recommendations! When you get the chance, check out Woodinville Whiskey, which is one of our local favorites.
I do have 2 releases which I like a lot! I am sure they will be highlighted in a video at some point.
This is a great video topic and I really like your selection! I have the Stranahans myself and really like it. I would love to see your thoughts on Few Spirits American Straight Whiskey as well.
Colorado produces some good juice! If you haven’t tried Spirit Hound distillers out of Lyons Colorado i hope you do. Just won whiskey of the year. 🥃
Have not but sounds great!
Huge Stranahan’s fan. Reminds me of a Sour beer. Love it.
Good stuff!
Uncle Nearest is some good stuff. I have the 1856 as well.
I need to get that one also.
So many channels talking about that Tin Cup 10-year. I guess I'll have to give it a shot.
Yes!
Westland American Single Malt is delicious. I was impressed with how good it was for only being aged 3 years. I haven't had it in a while though, so maybe they have older stuff now.
Agreed! Working on an American single malt show and def will include some Westland!
Nassiff family reserve. It’s a sourced MGP, but it’s an excellent American whiskey. And it helps they reside about 30 minutes from my home!!
Very enjoyable video. Thanks for the recommendations
Great reviews. Thanks
See if you can find Town Branch American Single Malt or even their Bourbon. It's a very underrated distillery.
Thank you for the recommendation!
Kurt, your introduction of Michter's could've been an ad..."Sour Mash Whiskey"..👍🏼
Thanks lol!
Have you done a review of Chattanooga bourbon? Love your show.
I have not but do have the bib and like it a lot! Was trying to prep for a future Tennessee whiskey show.
The comments I made on those whiskies were (Fitzgerald,
Old Forester, etc) from recommendations that were from drinkers far older than I and yes I've tried them myself but only in a shooter.
You're a good host and your backbar is quite impressive!
BTW, I've owned a couple myself including in Thailand because I've had plenty of experience on both sides of one. Whiskey, it's not just for breakfast anymore! 😋
@@slbdrinks BTW Kurt, that Cuervo comes in a nice presentation box but not as nice as the $2k one that you bought 😉
If you are looking for new stuff to try, consider Cognac & Armagnac, not a lot of info in english on them
Oh no lol! Not another one 😂
Whew! I was worried that you were gonna talk about not whiskey. :D
Michter’s American Whiskey is super good and not bourbon. But I’m thinking it is only not bourbon because of using used barrels. ;)
Haven’t tried their sour mash yet, but I’ll get that on my list. Thanks!
Most whiskeys are pretty much in fact bourbons other than a few details like used barrels etc.
All bourbon is whiskey but, not all whiskey is bourbon.
My hands down go to bourbon is Russell's Reserve 10...... affordable, 90 proof but still friendly, approachable, deliciousness 🤤
Correct! RR 10 is such a great pick for the money!
Fan of the Mitchers American whiskey. Under $40 in MA.
Great stuff!
Variety is the spice of life 😉
TinCup 10 is pretty tasty as well!!!! All your choices are great!!! 🤌🤌🤌
Thank you!
That Tin Cup 10 yr is mighty hard to find. Even hear in CO.
Really? To bad, it’s all over up here right now.
I tried the Michter's US1 Bourbon the other day and was not impressed for $40. It tasted very very young.
Sorry you didn’t like it.
@@slbdrinks it wasn't bad, just needs a few more years in the barrel.
I picked up a 10 Year Tin Cup because of ADHD Matt's review. Can't wait to open it. I am wanting to get a hold of that Old Elk too. mmm
I did as well and I don’t think you will be disappointed at all. It’s an amazing pour and very flavor packed
@@joeallman373 Maybe I need to get a backup and open it!
If Matt likes it I know it has to be good!
Interesting you have 2 bottles out of the 5 from distillerys created by Jess Graber
Really! Didn’t dig that deep. Now I need to!
Why are these a whisky but not bourbon. Is it a lower corn content? What is it missing or how is it different than a similar bottle that is a bourbon??
Could be not 51% corn but could also be not aged in new american oak or both
Correct answer from our friend here. Could be multiple reasons but bourbons has to be at least 51% corn and aged in new American oak barrels. That’s the short and sweet explanation.
Clyde May Alabama Style Whiskey. It’s aged in cider barrels. Delicious.
Oh wow that does sound good!
Michter’s sour mash…just had first time a week ago…..nice.
Yes!
I think Stranahans' Blue Peak is the best value in American Single Malt
No doubt! Bought that bottle specifically for this video and I was very pleasantly surprised!
He is really killing it at OE that’s for sure!
I’m pretty sure garrisons brothers down in Texas is sweet mash distiller. Also why there base whiskey start at mid 60 range.
I will be heading to my liquor store today!
I literally had Stranahans Blue Peak typed out, at the start of the video, as as suggestion. Didn't think it would be on the list. Absolutely LOVE it. Colorado has some great American malt. Loved this video.
I really like the blue peak!
Hey you are mentioned in a video by Mashed in the 12 Bourbons you'll regret buying.
I did see that, thanks for letting me know. I just wish they would have stipulated the exact voyage that I reference in the video.
I wasn’t aware that Tin Cup wasn’t a bourbon. I find the whole bourbon/whiskey category very confusing!
It is confusing so don’t feel bad lol. I didn’t know either.
Bull Run 7 for my taste buds
From what I can tell Tincup 10 is just MGP high rye bourbon cut down with Rocky Mountain water. The website doesn't say anything about the addition of Stranahan's in the 10 year as it does for the standard offering. Various websites seem to disagree on this point. Some say it does have Stranahan's while others say it does not and could actually be labeled bourbon even though it isn't.
I wish all releases would be transparent on all levels. So much easier to be a responsible buyer that way.
Tincup is pretty easy to drink. I'm female, so I like something smooth without a huge bite.
Whiskey equity and inclusion....awesome.
Thank you!
aarrrg, that Michter's Sour mash is $92.00 in my neck of the woods :(
Whoa!! Not cool. Sorry. Really should be close to 50.00.
