Woodford double oaked is one hell of a bottle and I’m so thankful you can regularly get it at any liquor store. One of the better values out there in my opinion
One of my favorites!
That and 1910
Woodford and old forester are actually finished the exact same way. Only difference is the mash bill. Learned recently they are owned by the same company and actually even use the exact same barrels and char
Absolutely-I need to grab another bottle of it for that matter.
Maple frosted cake donut!? That sounds amazing. We don’t have a Meyer’s (sp?) but I’m gonna have to check if the locals have those next time I visit
I'm just a beginner in the Whisky world and being able to start this journey watching your videos, it's really like a beacon of light in the vast sea of options.
Thank you for your guidance !
PS: Just had the Woodford Double Oaked yesterday and I loved it !
Had it last night for the first time and it was incredible! My wife even enjoyed it and she is not a whiskey person.
*whiskey "whisky" is Irish 😉
@@detroyt232323if you’re going to try to be pretentious at least get it right. Whisky is referred to scotch Japanese and Canadian. Whiskey is American and Irish.
@Rxbandit421 nope. With an E is ONLY American! How many times you been on the Bourbon Trail? 🤔😎
I really enjoyed this presentation. My first bottle was the Woodford Double Oaked - because of your other vids so this one was extra fun. You two have an amazing and easily consumable presentation together. If Trenton was my son I'd be extra proud!
Thank you!
Woodford double oaked is the pinnacle of bourbons im my opinion! Tried Four roses single barrel, old forester 1910, eagle rare 10 yr and buffalo trace but i always find myself going back to WF
We are probably related. That's my favorite. WRDO
I love the Woodford double oaked; glad it came on number one!
Honestly, I love the EC Toasted. I had no idea it was double oaked however and perhaps that’s why I love it so much. I even prefer it over the EC Barrel Proof. Here in Pa, Toasted runs $49.99 while Barrel Proof runs $69.99…so for $20 less I feel it is a great buy for the product. Now I need to try the 1910 and Woodford Double Oak to see how they compare. Great video guys!
Agree on the ectb. I think woodford d.o. is over rated. The 1920 trumps 1910 albeit not a toasted bottle. I do have to try the 1910 though. But the 20 is top notch.
John, 1910 and 1920 are both great pours. I will say though, if you do not enjoy Woodford Double-Oaked, your preference will likely be the 1920 over 1910.
My favorite part of this video was just watching a great relationship between father and son sharing a common interest. I've only had the EC Toasted. Can't say I loved it on my first try, but will try again. Seems like toasted bourbons would be great dessert bourbons given their sweetness.
Thanks Caleb for the kind words! My nephews name is Kaleb also but as you see, spelled with a K.
Had a family reunion in Hot Springs this last April.... My cousin brought Woodford Reserve and I brought Old Forester 1910. I had never tasted either one, but my cousin and I enjoyed both...
I'm back and forth on what I like better between the O.F. 1910 and the W.R. D.O. It kinda depends on my palette that day. The Woodford is more syrupy and the Forester is more complex. Both are dark brown in color and that tends to lead me to believe that sent a good amount of time in the barrel soaking into the wood 🪵🥃. 👍👍
Indeed! Both are fantastic!
Both have the exact same mash bill and are made by the same distiller.
I have a bottle of the Starlight Double Oaked that is a store pick and 112.2 proof.
It is excellent!
Oh my!
Just making some notes early in the video, but the Starlight is 106 proof, not 96 as you said. Right on the bottle
Jeez? That had to be a brain fart. My apologies
You shouldn't overlook Jim Beam Double Oak... its cheap and tasty. May not be as complex as the ones yall reviewed but I like it
I had some 1910 yesterday and I agree it very good 👍
Another great video. I can not find the Old Forester 1910 and the Elijah Craig Toasted here in PA. May need to take a road trip..😉
I was lucky enough to find a bottle of that EC toasted and it's one of the best bourbons I've ever had. To bad it is no where to be found in my region. The Woodford double oak is always in my bar but still need to try the 1910.
Glad you liked the EC toasted!
If you haven’t already, I’d like to see your thoughts on Angels Envy. I discovered it recently and it has quickly become one of my favorites. You can find it for around the 40$ range.
I’d like to see Peerless Double Oaked in a similar lineup sometime!
Brown Forman for the win. Aren't Woodford and Old Forester basically the same thing?
No completely different taste profiles imo.
Time & temperature. Lower temp for a longer duration would likely (IMO) "toast" a deeper cross section of the stave/barrel without charing the surface . Contrast that with an extremely high temp, which, for argument sake, instantly char the surface leaving a majority of the cross section unaffected.
Great! Thank you!
I've really enjoyed the Winchester Double Oak. I'll have to try some of these others.
bro the first sip yall were mirror image! haha
I've heard the same thing Trenton has about the EC Toasted Barrell. It's not available in my area, and TBH it's not on my personal "must find" list anymore. Lots of "hit and miss (mostly miss)" reviews. I haven't had the Starlight or the Daviess, but I just poured >½ a bottle of the OF 1910 down the drain the other day. For me, OF 1910 is just god-awful and impossible to like; I wouldn't pay more than $5 for it even if it was the only thing on the shelf. The WR Double Oaked is delicious, and I'm on my third bottle this year. Perfect bourbon for autumn. Something about that bourbon that doesn't appeal to me during summer really just goes incredibly well in autumn.
Excellent fall whiskey!
I have (and like) the Daviess County French Oak finished and was excited to hear what you thought of their Double Oak...
OUCH! Last place. :-(
I guess at least it didn't get the "Drinking this is like being in the car with someone who's smoking." treatment.
Oh boy lol! I have the French oak and like that one quite a bit. Unfortunately this double oaked bottle didn’t measure up to the French oak.
Man oh man, y’all just keep putting out great videos. And I think y’all are great about describing the whiskeys as well. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Great blind review. I’m a huge Starlight fan. Try their “Cigar Batch”
If you can find it lol
I just recently got a bottle of Coopers Craft 100. Isn’t that one double oak as well? If so I believe it’s better than Woodford Reserve DO and EC toasted.
1910 is one my favs.
I don’t believe CC is double oaked or barreled. They do some special scraping inside the barrel than heavy charred.
However, it is absolutely delicious!
Missing the Sagamore Double Oaked
Left it out because it’s a rye but an awfully good pour!!
Dang it, I almost bought a bottle of that WRDO today. Never had it before and didn't think it was anything special. Now I'll have to go back and get a bottle.
Hope you love it!
1910 is definitely sweet. Woodford has nicer flavor
I've only had 3 and Woodford and 1910 would be my 1 and 2 but a tie And E. C. was 3rd.😋🥃🇺🇸
You guys are helping me determine my next purchase so thank you guys 👍🏻
More water during tastings Trenton.
Love the channel! FYI it’s pronounced “Davis” county. Cheers!
Appreciate the correction! With the E in the spelling I would have not known that.
U both need to do more reviews on camera, great collabortion, Trenton is a star ⭐️( no smokin in his car 🚗😂) luv ya guy’s, 🥃 from MI.
He keeps me laughing Dunny! The plan moving forward is to have him behind camera during tastings as much as possible!
I am far from convinced that producers of double oaked (????) remain within the standards required to be authentic bourbon whiskey. And I've yet to find any double oaked bourbon which is better enough to justify the prices, with Peerless Double Oak being an exception.. Also, the price of many double oak offerings seems quite low for a distillery seeking profit.
Interesting that the 2 darkest ended up at the top of Double Oaked taste test!
KURT & Trent!!! "Heavily toasted and lightly charred". And "Wood shavings in a smoothy" are 2 lines I HAVE to use at least once in my life!!!! Awesome!!!! Love you guys!!!
Ha! Never know what that kid is going to say Tim!
Don't forget "Drinking this is like being in the car with someone who's smoking."
@@tim_1522 You're right!! I forgot about that one!!!
Is the woodford double Oaked worth $50+ dollars? It’s $50-$60 where I’m at.
I think it is very good. If I was going to spend $50 on a bottle WW DO would be it it. Though I usually stick to Wild Turkey 101. It's hard to beat at any price.
IMO I would say yes. Lots of layered flavors and rich syrupy notes.
When they say heavy chared then laightly toasted they’re talking about 2 different barrels. Barrel one heavily chared and aged for a long time, barrel 2 aged for roughly 8 months in a lightly toasted barrel. I thought this was common sense.
Sorry buddy but that’s not the case. For ex this wording is taken off of breaking bourbon considering the Woodford double oaked.
The second barrel used is deeply toasted before being lightly charred.
All in all it is def some delicious bourbon! Appreciate you checking in.
The infamous Trent!!!! Gonna get Dad some Ink? Maybe an SLB Tatt?
Hmmm, might have one already 😳
Elijah Craig Toasted coming in at 129.00😵
Toasting is a slower “baking” process to expand the wood and bring out some of the wood flavors. Charing is blowing fire into the barrels and actually burning the wood. Love the video guys!
Thank you for the succinct explanation. I had no clue either!
Wonderful and simple explanation! Thanks for sharing!
@@atg1338every comment you make is negative. Thanks for being part of such an otherwise upbeat community. 👍🏼 without people like you it’d be boring i guess.
1910 and woodford double oaked are my two favorite toasted/double oaked bourbons I’ve had. Just picked up the nulu toasted. Excited to try it since it’s a lot higher proof
Nulu is great! Didn’t make it into this blind due to the much higher proof.
How did you looked the Nulu?
@@CruiserDawg I liked it. The higher proof was good
I do not typically gravitate toward Rye, but the Nulu Double-Oaked Rye blew my socks off. Phenomenal pour.
1910 and Woodford double oaked are my go to drinks for anything short of a special occasion, got the special scotch for those moments. The fact they are perfectly priced and available are a blessing.
1910 absolutely slaps. Two other toasted choices that are quite good are Penelope toasted series (barrel strength) and Sangamore Spirits Double Oak rye
Completely agree with this!!
Agreed, Sagamore Double Oaked Rye is amazing. Found one in TN after hearing others rave about it.
I agree, Sagamore DO rye is amazing.
We rarely see Penelope up here so unfortunately I do not have a toasted bottle. The Sagamore toasted rye on the other hand is other worldly good!
Huge fan of woodford double oaked. Definitely going to be giving 1910 a try after this!
Same here!
As I understand it...the lighter toast will excrete the vanillan and fundamental wood flavor profiles with the heavier char adding the deeper and lingering complexities and smokey flavors. There are infinitesimal variables depending on the type of oak, where it comes from and the length of dry aging prior to the charring process. Coopering is a whole other dimension to the flavor process. Additionally, the age of the barrels being used weigh heavily with flavor[s] influence. Whether the barrels are brand new or 1,2,3 or more years old AND have they been used in other capacities such as sherry or red wine? Perhaps a few segments about this aspect of the making of Bourbon would be of interest to your viewers.
I really enjoy your channel and enthusiasm!
Fantastic explanation of the process! Thank you for sharing!
@@slbdrinks thank you. It is all very interesting.
Woodford Double Oaked and 1910 are my two favorites in this lineup and are currently on my shelf. Thanks for confirming this. I won't wast my time / money on the other three.
I love you guys’ channel. I like that you do reviews on actual obtainable bourbons we can all get nationwide. With a mix of allocated products. Your reviews are so approachable.
Thank you!
I'd be curious to see where you would rank Jim Beam Double Oak compared to these. A much cheaper bottle and always on the shelf and isn't necessarily a dessert pour like I find some of these to be.
Love many of the ones on this blind. I absolutely fell in love with the JBDO because it has all the vanilla/carmel flavor come through while still not being "overly" sweet to my palate. Also you can't beat the price on the JBDO.
Woodford double oaked is fantastic, not surprised it won the blind. I didn't know the 1910 was double barreled, I'll have to pick one up!
Love that Woodford won and EC placed low. I don't understand the fervor around EC Toasted or even ECBP. It's fine whiskey but unless you get a store pick that's super aged they are generally on par with most $50-60 bottles. I'd take Heaven Hill BIB or OF 1920 over most ECBP's I've run across. Similar story with Larceny BP. Just not worth paying over retail on those two bottles.
Woodford Double Oaked is just consistently one of the best bottles you can buy around $50. There are so many bottles coming out between $50-80 and most are just inferior to something that is on the shelf at 95% stores. Variety is nice but I feel like Bourbon YT forget how good Double Oaked or even Makers Cask strength are until they put them in blinds. Then they immediately forget again.
I love WRDO and couldn’t wait to try 1910. I was really let down. I had such high expectations for it. I’d take ECTB over 1910.
I hope to God you don't waste what's in those glasses after you shoot the video.😁
Nope!! That would be a cardinal sin! Most of the time I pour what’s left in an infinity bottle. Once full I give those to my other boys or friends.
Duuuuude. I've been watching this channel for about the last year - trying to get into bourbon (I love Redbreast 12 Cask Strength). If i'm honest, for the last decade, i've never been able to tell a huge difference between bourbons. I literally just sat down with small pours of 1910 and WRDO and for the first time in my life, tasted a HUGE difference. The Woodford is slightly more polished with a darker vanilla sweetness. The 1910 tastes a bit brighter, like a peanut brittle and cherry cola fusion. Cheers to me hopefully being able to enjoy more bourbons from now on, and thanks for the great content!
Love the Woodford DO and the limited release Double Double Oaked was some of the most amazing bourbon I've tried.
My brain felt "heavily charred" trying to understand how all these whiskeys are finished! Great explanation, comparison, and idea for a tasting. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks!
Lol! I think that’s how Trent felt as well!
Great comment, I believe we all felt this sentiment.
The best Double Oak bottle you don’t have in the challenge..
Cheers tho SB🏆
I've loved Woodford Reserve DO ever since I first tasted it at the distillery in 2019. To me, it has a cognac element to it, that's very appealing.
I really like both the OF 1910 and WRDO with the OF having a slight edge in my opinion. I like regular WR, OF 86, and EC small batch as well but not as much. Seeing how you both like the WRDO and OF 1910 but not the ECTB should I not even try the ECTB?
Everyone has their own specific taste profile so that’s a very hard question to answer. If at all possible see if you can get a pour at a bar before purchase. If not if you look online you will find other reviews and that way you can make a decision based on multiple opinions.
WRDO all the way. And if you can get a store pick or barrel select. Jump on it.
Happened to sit down with a pour of Woodford double oaked and this video showed up. I think my phone is spying on me...lol
👀😂
1910 I get Marshmallow on the pallet as well... My favorite Old Forester product.
1910 has one of the best noses for $50 I’ve ever experienced. It’s a mainstay in my bar at home
Great review again guys..thanks from Trev in the UK 🇬🇧
I am not a Huge Jim Beam fan. I do have to say there double Oak is really good. I would like to see it in a blind tasting. Be well.
Blessings from Gettysburg Pa…
Hoping eventually for another double oaked blind.
The answer is Jim Beam double Oaked, sad it didn't make the list!
Unfortunately I can’t have them all but maybe someday.
lightly toasted/heavily charred refers to the first barrel then the second barrel. Same barrel cannot be both at the same time
Another Indiana distillery, West Fork Distillery out of Indianapolis, also produces a double oaked bottle via the Old Hamer line. It’s a respectable bottle and I love supporting local, but it can hardly hold a glass to 1910 and WRDO - my 2 all time favorite bourbons.
During barrel production, the insides of barrels are typically toasted-either over an open flame or over an oven. Toasting both mellows the tannins in the wood, as well as changes the flavors the barrel might impart from raw wood to more spicy, vanilla notes-toasting actually helps release vanillin from the cellulose in the wood. There are varying degrees of toasting-from a light toast to a heavy toast and, as you might imagine, that changes the way they can influence a wine. Essentially, the heavier the toast, the stronger the barrel’s flavors.
The word “charred” implies that something has gone past toasting to partially burning, and indeed charred barrels look black inside-they are about an eighth of an inch charred. Charred barrels aren’t really used for wine, but they are a part of bourbon production. That charred wood ends up becoming a sort of activated carbon filter, which can help remove sulfur compounds from a whisky, and make a smoother drink. Charred barrels also impart a darker color, smoky notes as well as caramel, honey and plenty of spicy accents.
Information From The Wine Spectator
Appreciate the knowledge!
@@slbdrinks Fun info on this very subject.
I’d like to see Michters toasted barrel added to this one
Thanks for the info!!!
Jim Beam Double Oak is cheap but very good.
Man.. I love this father/son bourbon tasting channel. Yall's vibe is great.
Thank you!
Great topic - confirmed by many of the comments. WRDO was my favorite until I started to develop a taste for higher proof. Still go through more of it than anything else. Nearly every glass, I mutter, $!%% candy in a glass… 1910 is right there with it.
I want that Davies’s county so bad. I am searching for that in my area. I have all the others! Good video.
I think that lineup is pretty decent considering the price point!
I absolutely love WR Double Oaked!!!!! Worth every penny!!
Just bought woodford double oaked today. Cant wait to try it
Damnit I hate this channel… and I can’t stop watching.
Deeply depressed to learn that Blanton’s, which was a $40-45 bottle 12 years ago when I started drinking it, now costs near triple that. Some internet research suggests that the Joe Rogan podcast popularised it.
I’ve also second your opinion on the Woodford double: a lovely drop that I’d go back to in a heartbeat.
The bourbon craze is nation wide. So many folks enjoying good whiskey.
I find myself conflicted with EC Toasted. It’s very good, but at the same proof as the small batch. For that reason, I don’t understand what justifies the $20-25 upcharge. You can get the ECBP for another $20 more which blows it out of the water. I certainly wish they had a toasted version of the barrel proof, or at least something with some more power.
Agree 💯! I actually like the small batch better but that’s me.
I loved the show while I drank single malt whisky in cool rainy season of Cambodia...cool being 80F....
Just needed to spend some time with my Indiana family in SLB bar...
Cheers...
Thanks for joining Jeff! Hopefully you were wearing a hoodie lol!
Love seeing WRDO winning. It always used to be my favorite bourbons and now it is still in my top 5 most favorites.
Peerless double Oaked is way way up there
Would love to find this one!
I’m super interested in trying something from Starlight. Where are y’all grabbing your bottles of Starlight? Love the videos!
Hi Kate! We see a decent amount of Starlight products in our area. We do live in NW Indiana.
toasting doesnt expose the wood to open flame...charring does
Kurt you should get our wife in one of your videos
Have tried many times lol. Her and Michelle as well.
Damn, was wondering why I wasn't getting the same tasting notes on Old Forrester. I bought the 1920...
Ohhh ok. Ya that’s a big difference.
Hey, check out Bluegrass double oaked. Great bottle! Not super available but easy to find in KY!
Next trip to KY I will look for it!
I put benchmark in a seasoned Buffalo Trace cask and left it for a year. Pretty good! Does this qualify as double oaked? Or is double oak first in a charred cask and then in a different cask?
Since it previously held whiskey it would be considered a finished bourbon. Double oaked would be aged in a new barrel than aged some more in another new barrel of different char level or toast.
I am a big fan of OF 1910 and Woodford Double. Recently found EC Toasted Barrrel and it was great. I will take 1910 any day of the week.
Where's Jim Beam Double Oak? Amazing option for 20 bucks.
Need to get that one.
No love for Jim Beam Double Oak? 😢
Sagamore Spirits Double Oaked....hands down
So good no doubt!
Beam double oak, and makers 46. Although the makers uses toasted oak boards in the barrel. So...?
Correct. Since toasted oak staves are inserted in the existing barrel it is not a double oaked or double barreled bourbon. Although very good!
Since I got turned on to Sagamore double oak it has become my favorite. I realize it's a rye but it sure is tasty and readily available to me.
It is sooooo good!
I guess I would guess it would be like taking a slice of bread and popping in a warm toaster to get that nice light brown crisp and drying out and then taking a flamethrower to it so you get both the lighter flavors and then that char on top but with wood obviously lol
I think Trent would understand this explanation the best lol! Good job!
Thanks Guys for this review. Toasted and Double Oaked products seem to be taking off as Bourbon drinkers are more than willing to pay the extra $$ for these Elite bottles. I do think that the regular Elijah Craig is a great value as an everyday sipper or in a Manhattan. How about a show on ALL of the Makers Mark products as they are releasing more specialty
offerings like Barrell proof, etc. Their "46" product lead the way in the secondary aging process. Oops, almost forgot to ask you to think about making a Bourbon Manhattan review
I really enjoyed learning about toasting/charring in this episode, as I haven't tried any whiskeys of that sort yet.
Thanks guys!
crazy trent says that because i love the elijah craig with a cigar
Every March I join my father in Florida for a week. We always have a blast together, he's a great dad. I'm a bourbon drinker and he's more rum. We also love a few cigars and laughs. He asked me this year to share a bourbon, I'll be choosing WRDO or OF1910.
Great video. I'm a big fan of double oaked whiskies. I would love to see a double oaked rye video as well. You know that I am going to recommend Sagamore Spirit Double Oaked!
Ohhhhh ya! That Sagamore double oaked is fabulous!
And boom, 15 minutes in... sweet-tarts ftw
😂
What do yous guys do with the leftover bourbon in the Glencairns?
Usually pour them into an infinity bottle than give it away when full.
