The Sonic games for the Sega Master System and the Game Gear are much less well known than their Genesis/Mega Drive counterparts and have a reputation for being quite challenging, especially in handheld form. You'd never know this from the speed Sonic blazes through the game here.
Unlike later 8-bit Sonic games, there are significant differences in levels between the SMS version and the Game Gear version. The SMS version was primarily used, due to much shorter score screens.
The8BitBeast ( tasvideos.org/Users/Profile/T... ) aims to collect the maximum special bonus at the end of the levels. More about this goal in the submission text.

It's a really good TAS, I feel like more could have been done in the auto-scroll level to add more entertainment value though

Somebody thought that auto scrolling levels belongs in a sanic game. Wtf?
Well yes but…Sky Chase Zone from Sonic 2 was pretty cool.
And that somebody also thought a vertical climb level belonged in a Sonic game.
Also, the Master System version's screen scrolling being able to kill you in that level is certainly a douchebag move by the devs.
Relax people , it was a time when Sega and their devs didn't know what Sonic should actually be .

I played the game gear version a lot, but the biggest special bonus (end of game) I got was 200k. What do you have to do to get the max?

@@danieldutoit2187 because the category is based around collecting Max Bonus stage bonuses
The criteria for max bonus score is based on what the game counts for bonuses when you complete the game, minus all lives you had:
1: Getting all of the Chaos Emeralds.
2: Entering and hitting the goal for all the eight bonus stages (requiring 50 rings).
3: Destroying all 1-up monitors outside of bonus levels! (a final 1-up monitor at the last stage will appear if you met this).
4: Completing the game without a miss (losing a life).
If all the criteria is met, you net the maximum allocation of the "Special Bonus" which is 500,000 points -- the goal of this TAS.
As it does to appear all the levels. With an exclamation?
The "!" Goal Post indicates you'll enter a Special Stage. You just need to have 50 to 99 rings after finishing the act. However, Scrap Brain Zone and Sky Base Zone are the only stages where you are prevented from gaining access to a Special Stage.
