Sonic and the Secret Rings - All Missions, Max Level Tool Assisted Speedrun Compilation

- After on-and-off work over the course of almost 2 years, we finally have TASes of all 110 missions in this game using a fully upgraded Sonic.
It should go without saying, but no cheats or game modifications were used in this video. You can do everything shown here on your own console with a wiimote - if you had the inhuman precision to do so.
All levels are optimized for the real time between confirming level selection in the menu and reaching "Mission Complete". This means no level restarts, pausing, or letting boss intro cutscenes play out for an advantage. In certain missions, respawning from a checkpoint can roll back the timer - this too is never used. Time Break is only used in LP12, where it is mandatory, and SO13, where it saves real time. In both cases, time breaks are minimized to optimize for real time instead of the in-game timer. For the total time shown at the end, the in-game level times are used for convenience.

This tracks my individual mission times; all are world records at time of this upload (though a majority have not had competition in over a decade). Note that times marked with an asterisk are optimized for the in-game timer and may sacrifice real time, unlike the TASes shown here.
Of course, as with every TAS, my understanding of how to optimize the game grew as I worked through this project (which was not done in any coherent level order). If I were to start from scratch now I know more time could be saved, but I'm content to publish this for now. I'll never be able to escape this game so don't be shocked to see a v2 or at least some remastered levels at some point down the line.

This is really old and a dumb nitpick but the hedgehog engine isn't a physics/gameplay engine it's a graphics engine
@@Just_Red_ the graphics part of Hedgehog Engine is called mirage, while yes the sonic games used Havok for physics, HE wasnt just a graphics engine

Speed break and time break are two of the coolest abilities in a sonic game. Hands down.

Actually, Hero Gauge slows time for bosses. Dark Gauge allows Shadow to use Chaos Blast.
@@astralshadow6193Even cooler. 😂 It inverts colors. If use this with the Super Shadow Hack you can Slow time, Teleport, Fly, lift things while flying, shoot Chaos Spears and Chaos Blast.

Even a Hyper Sonic mod in Generations or the Unleashed or Frontiers boost can't go this fast
it’s pretty insane how fun this game is in general tbh, Secret Rings and Black Knight are my two favourite Sonic games and they definitely don’t deserve the “Sonic 06 2 and 3” reputation they have, I think a lot of it comes from people who played the first levels, saw there was motion controls and called them awful games or people who played them with the idea in their head that they were bad so they couldn’t actually judge them for what they are.
Haha yea if u are willing to level of to max . With max speed and acceleration boost, u start to really feel like sonic but on the other hand the game literally becomes unplayable hah. This is why sonic doesn't move this fast even in its equal game . But I do love the level up system in this one alot

Seeing actual oob tricks in secret rings is so satisfying. A game normally on rails, broken so that for a split second it seems to have no bounds.

I'm only at Lv 42 in Secret Rings but oh well, I'll eventually reach Lv 99 someday. Great TAS though!

This game was so on rails, I didn't even know out of bounds stuff like this was possible.
Nothing in this video makes sense. The amount of glitches that Sonic pulls off, as well as the strategies that I've never seen before, is something really amazing to watch. I always have Secret Rings on my heart just because it was around my childhood, and I don't care what other people think about this game.

You need certain skills equipped that give experience. In this case, it is the skill that gives experience for completing 20+ long ring chains.

Man that was great. Will you do one similar to this but with Black Knight in the future?
I've considered it, but honestly it is a lot more boring. Once you get fast enough to run past spawning enemies, you realize Black Knight levels are mostly just straight lines with minimal obstacles. Sonic's slower left/right acceleration and nerfed speed break also eliminate a lot of the cooler things you can do in this game. However, if you want a taste of Black Knight, I have another "100% demonstration" on this channel that shows how things can look if you actually fight enemies.

Oh my god, I just HAVE to ask how you've got everything set up-I've been trying to configure Dolphin(I'm assuming that's what you're using) to use TAS and/or USB controllers forever and I still can't get ANY progress. I've always wanted to TAS Secret Rings and Black Knight (and other Wii games, I guess) but I figured no one did them. I'm gonna watch this so I can continue freaking out for the rest of the day; let me know when you get a chance! 👍
Pleasantly surprised to notice that Crest of Dark actually had a use during a TAS, how ever briefly. (Just the once for Evil Foundry 10's collect Rings, right?)
I can't remember off the top of my head if there are any other levels, but the wind crest ring burn in EF10 means you have to run down an extra hallway at the end. Wind crest only increases top speed, which you need to accelerate up to. Since the level has so much starting and stopping with the rails, it wouldn't even provide enough benefit to justify needing the extra rings. So crest of dark is used less because it is super useful and more because crest of wind is actively harmful.

At 21:20 to 24:17 sonic... he straight mopped the floor with UHU's face. For some one called the wind genie he ain't got crap on sonics speed. Also at 49:42 sonic is so powerful he toke down erazor in 2 hits and made him T-pose also how does that work where you can defeat erazor in just 2 hits? I've done it before but it's very rare I've done it like 4 times.

I just want to know: What was it like trying to TAS a game entirely steered with wiimote tilt controls?
Luckily left/right movement is roughly as precise as a control stick left/right. But then there are things like catapults - I never did actually figure out how to get them to work properly. I'm thankful I was able to skip them all.
@@RingRush well I'm glad I'm not alone in that, I tried my hardest to get a consistent control setup in dolphin to play this casually without motion controls, and it's just those damn catapults
What I do is use backup to wind the catapult and then alternate shake remote and backup until it sends me flying

37:18 so that’s the trick! I thought the slide skip was impossible with Crest of Wind but you just have to jump over the first boost panels?
It's possible regardless, crest of the wind just makes timing tighter of when you have to press 2. The jump over the boost panel is just a super small timesaver.
@@RingRush odd, when I tried that with crest of the wind active the boost pads sent me into the air instead of the small bit of floor that you can start a slide on.
