MY goodness, someone who gets it and simply explaining full time 4 wheel drive. And of course you are Canadian. I'm from Montana so I know you guys "get it."
I raised this issue on the JeepGladiatorforum and linked your video as part of the discussion but it appears that you CANNOT order it any more on Gladiators (JT's) as of 2024. Don't know about JL's. It (full time 4WD) ONLY is available on the new Mojave and Rubicon X versions. X ONLY not a regular Rubicon or Mojave. We had a guy in the discussion who was AT the dealership ordering and so they had access to the JEEP dealership Ordering software and the dealership itself was not happy apparently as they had lots of people ordering on 2023 versions and now were going to have to sell them up if that was a personal requirement for a customer. Interesting... @@CheaperJeeperTV

Thank you! I just purchased my 2022 Wrangler Sahara unlimited. I got stuck on hwy 7 :) because I didn't know how switch it back to 2H. Now I know how to switch it. Cheers ✌️

A Wrangler Sahara 2021 owner here. An exemplary Wranglers 4wh operation manual for dummies you have here! After going through a number of videos, still clueless why my 4wh gear wouldn't budge, I was still driving with my 2wh in this big snowstorm of the season. It never occurred to me that I have to switch it while I'm actually driving! I almost broke the gear as I was trying to move it forcefully while parked. I'll try again later after work, the road is going to be wet and slippery! Thank you for your great video!
My Sahara dangerously understeer s even at low speed so it's the front wheels to lose grip in which case I suppose 4H part time is better than 4H auto as 4H auto won't engage the front axel in understeerimg scenario, am I correct?
You can shift into or out of 4WD high range while stopped or moving up to 55mph. Shifts into and out of 4WD low range on the other hand require you to be moving 2-3mph, shift transmission to neutral, shift transfer case to low range quickly and firmly without stopping/pausing in neutral....then shift the transmission back to drive....do the same to go back to 4wd high range or to 2wd, be moving 2-3mph, shift transmission to neutral, shift transfer case out of low range, back to 4H or 2H, then shift transmission back to drive. If the shift lever is difficult to move the 4WD probably hasn't been used in a long time, if ever....and the linkage on the transfer case/shift lever under the vehicle probably needs to be cleaned and lubricated....its a common issue with all the mechanically shifted transfer cases when they haven't been used for quite a while.
Hey Jeff, Awesome! I'm glad you found the video helpful. There are two follow up videos as well. One for using 4 Low off road, and subscriber questions and answers related to this video. Enjoy the rental. Cheers.
Hey Peter, Thats pretty awesome. We're lucky they came out with it in the JL, among other improvements. I'm thrilled my video helped you in your decision. Check out the maintenance playlist, as it will give you a decent idea of what to maintain, and even show you how you can do some items yourself if motivated. Cheers.
Our 2020 wrangler does not have the 4auto but you go right to 4H and our lever does not shift as easy as yours. It takes a few good tugs to get her shifted. Good video however to show people what they need to do.
Hey HouseImprovements, Thanks for sharing that those who do not have Selec Trac will need to shift from 2H to 4H Part Time directly. Thanks also for the feedback. Incidentally, your channel was very helpful to me a couple years ago when doing some of my own HouseImprovements. Thanks for that too.
That’s awesome. You may find my maintenance videos informative as well. I am new to Jeep ownership and just sharing what I’m learning along the way. Enjoy your Jeep. Cheers.
Selec Trac is standard on the Wrangler 4xe Sahara. I leave mine in 4H Auto all the time to get the full 375HP and 470lb/ft of torque out of the 4xe powertrain.
Thank you for the feedback. I’m glad you found the video helpful. Feel free to check out some of the other maintenance videos that may also prove helpful. As for using the four-wheel-drive gears after a long period, it’s good practice every once in a while to engage them to keep things moving. Have fun. Cheers.
Hey Healthy American, I’ve been very pleased with its performance. Love the Jeep up here in Canada in the winter as a result of the great driving performance. I found even its overall 4WD performance off road spectacular as well.
Hey there, I appreciate the feedback on the channel. This is my first Jeep ever and am just sharing what I’ve been learning along the way. Welcome to the journey. Cheers.
Hey sunseasurff1000, I believe when in four wheel drive, the gears are not designed to operate differentially for the different spin going on at each tire when in a turn. I assume you are in 4L or 4H? You should only use 4L or 4H on loose terrain like gravel, sand, mud or snow., so the wheels have the ability to slip when needed. On pavement, the wheels will hop or bind because during a turn, the gears in 4WD wont allow them to spin differentially. Continued use of 4WD in a turn on pavement can cause damage to your gears, so I'd avoid that scenario wherever possible. I hope this helped. Cheers.
I had an older 1988 Wrangler and you had to stop and put it in neutral to shift the transfer case. The new JL is so much better, but my transfer case lever is SUPER difficult to change. Seems like yours is rather easy. I may take it in to have it looked at as its only got 1500 miles on it.
Hey MyBluJL, For sure take it in. As you were able to see in my video, the transfer case shifts fairly smooth. While I have your attention, I really think you do a great job on your videos. Seems we are both tending to a common theme, doing stuff for our Jeeps economically. Best Regards
I have four Jeeps in my life time and I remember having to stop and get out of the jeep to turn the hub so it was in four wheel drive. Jeep has come along ways

Good stuff and well done. One thing a lot of the new Jeepers don't quite get, is the regular command trac transfer case. Shift on the fly. Do it while the jeep is moving, I.E., Don't try to do it parked. I have seen a lot of that. Struggles, go away, if you shift on the fly. That used to be in Jeeps advertising.
Thank you, you made me save 100s of dollars if not thousands, I was able to get the jeep out of the collapsed garage tent (snow conditions) you're so right, CANADA , "eh"? :D It was about time I learned how to do it, the imposter syndrome is a killer. Not only it's so easy but also it's FUN, add on top of it, I've ✌🏿driven so many different cars in my life, and the Jeep Wrangler is my favorite so far. The porsche of the off-roads! Berxwedan Jiyane!
Dope video, appreciate this! This helped me figure out how to shift the gears! I driving a 2020 model but there isn't auto though, these models seem a bit harder to move between gears 2H- 4L
Hey Mike, I’m glad you like the video. In 2018 4 H auto, the Selec Trac, was an option only on the Sahara. I believe it’s available on other models now. There is a video on how to use 4 low off-road, if interested. Cheers.
If its hard to shift the shift lever its probably due to the 4WD not being used often LOL. The linkage gets a little gummed up from road grime over time, so when its not used often it causes it to be hard to shift from 2WD into any of the 4WD positions. Shifting into or out of 4L needs to be done while the vehicle is slowly rolling 2-3mph, shift the transmission to neutral, shift the transfer case lever quickly and firmly from 2h or 4h to 4L without pausing in Neutral....then shift the transmission back to D. To shift out of 4L, while rolling 2-3mph, shift transmission to neutral, and shift the transfer case out of 4L back to either 4h or 2h, again without stopping in neutral.

A couple of notes, 4h part time is defiantly not for rock crawling, but forest access roads yes. 4L is generally used not for more power (although it will do that) it helps out the trans when it's under load at low speed by giving it a mechanical advantage. It's primary use off road though is to help you slow down for control, while still giving you the power you need at 2kph to move the jeep. Lastly, you should never be in gear when shifting to 4 Low, you should always be in neutral. As to shifting while moving, I usually do it while stopped to avoid grinding. If it won't drop in to gear I usually bump the transmission in to drive for a second and then back to Neutral, doing that will usually get things moving inside the transfer case enough to let you shift without grinding. Last thing, on air compressors, check out the MV50, it's made by various companies Smittybuilt seems to be the popular one at the moment and while they don't use the mv50 model any local off road shop will point you in the right direction. They are just about bullet proof and for the money will go far faster than any cigarette lighter compressor and last far longer. Particularly as you move to larger tires, they take up no more space than the one you showed and are well worth the money. I've had mine for about 10 years now and while it's semi retired due to me installing a much faster and more expensive one it still gets pressed into service as a backup or loaned out when I guide newbie runs. They typically cost about double what a "higher end" part store one does, but will fill more then twice as fast, and that can be a big deal when the mosquitoes are out at the end of the day.
Hey Drizit, I really appreciate your valuable comments. Very helpful. I’ll have to investigate further the mv50 model of air compressor you talk about. Who do you organize newbie runs through?
@@CheaperJeeperTV no problem. I guide newbie runs and camp NL for the of4wd, I also guide for the CNTC club at their annual event Adventure Weekend on labour day weekend. I will also be at the JeepCentral.ca may 24 run.
@@CheaperJeeperTV that's awesome, keep a close eye out as there's only one in the spring this year and the other 2 will be late summer so as not to conflict with things that other clubs or sponsors are putting on. First of all, thank you very much for all your videos, they are very useful, I have only had a 2022 Rubicom for a short time and I had not seen this video and I tried to go to 4L and I was driving at 15 20 miles and the jeep made a noise and like a jump and Then I had a hard time getting it back to 4H, then everything continued to work fine. Do you think it damages something???
Thank you for the feedback on the videos. Much appreciated. If you were driving 15 to 20 mph when trying to go into 4L, that might be considered as going too fast and would explain the noise and the jump. If everything is working ok now, maybe there is no damage anywhere, but there is no way for me to know. Sorry I couldn’t be more help. 🤷🏻♂️
God willing it to be so and nothing has been damaged although I still have a warranty, what should I be aware of or what can I check to see if I suffered any damage? thanks again
Hey antmon, Thank you for the feedback on the video. Yes the terms they use can be confusing, thats why I made the video. 4H Auto, means the Jeep will automatically send power to the front wheels if it detects slippage in the rear wheels. You can engage this and it can be on full time, whether on pavement or offroad. 4H Part Time, is what you engage if off road, not when you drive all the time, so...part time? I don't know, I didn't make up the terminology. lol I hope it helped a little. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Oh geez 😄 - so they are telling you to use it part time... thank you for clearing that up! So also seems there is no disadvantage to driving always in 4H Auto instead of 2H - you operate in 2H but only kick into 4WD as it needs to...but have to assume you'll lose maybe some mpg
Hey Dave, Thanks for the feedback. I was hoping that it might help some new Jeep owners. I have some more DIY videos coming soon, and then some more videos on going camping with your Jeep.. Cheers
David Mytchak Dave, yeah, I really wasn’t sure if MOAB edition had lockers/sway bar or not, or some other upgrades to off road components, don’t really see many around me (Long Island, NY). I have a 2016 75th Anniversary Edition, which is a dressed up Sahara with a Rubi Hood, nicer interior and Trak Lok (LSD) rear differential (not Tru lok). I really only learned the locker and sway bar specifics after I bought it. I probably could have gotten a Rubicon for a few grand more (paid $35K in 2019 with 12K miles). I see the same vehicle at price now with more mileage. I would like to get another, prob a 2018-2019 Rubicon with under 20k miles, but impossible to find < $45K. I love the JLs and the addition of full time 4WD option (for my wife really), in addition to standard 4H and 4L.
If I don’t have a 4h auto, I can only keep in 2 H until I am in snow a then change to 4H. How fast can you go in 4 H? Your video is very informative and very clear.
Hi Diane, Thank you for your feedback on the video. As for your question, the suggested answer and points of view can be found in this thread. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/maximum-speed-in-4h.21585/ Cheers.
Hey Neon, My Jeep in this video has the "Selec Trac" option. I thought I mentioned that in the video, however, you may find the information at the following link helpful if you're interested in learning more about it. Depending on where you live, you may not really miss not having it. I find it most helpful when driving on roads with icy patches and then dry pavement patches. Thanks for the incredibly helpful video! Very easy to understand! One question I have is whether Jeep’s 4H Auto would be most equivalent to Subaru’s AWD. I won’t be doing serious off-roading but Jeep’s design and its ruggedness are hard to resist, and Subaru’s reliability and their AWD seem awesome as well. Thanks!
Hey Andrew, WOW! What a question. Especially given that the new Subaru designs coming out look really nice too. I couldn’t really answer your question with any authority as I don’t know very much about the Subaru options. However there are some Subaru off-road UA-camrs that you could watch and ask. I understand why you’re in a quandary though. I’d be wondering the same thing. Good luck.
NO.. 4H Auto is like a "slip and grip" awd system. If the back slips a clutch temporarily engages to send power to the front to help you out. Then the clutch disengages. It is not a true full-time 4WD system like a Lexus GX460 or Toyota Landcruiser which use a real center differential. Most Subaru systems are slip and grip, the higher end WRX models are full time awd. But your typical outback and forester etc are slip and grip...
Yes, and no....Subaru's AWD system sends power to all 4 wheels all the time...the 4-Auto setting in the Jeep only sends power to the front wheels when traction is lost at the rear axle, then it reverts back to rear wheel drive again, until traction loss is detected, then it sends power to the front....the "Selec-Trac" system used now is clutch based, so it can vary the amount of power sent to the front wheels compared to the older version of "Selec-Trac" found in the Cherokee (XJ), Comanche (MJ), Grand Cherokee (ZJ & WJ), and Liberty (KJ), which had a mechanical "differential" in the transfer case that mechanically sent power to the front axle all the time when in full time mode....the current Selec-Trac uses clutches, and isn't engaged in 4WD mode all the time, just when traction is lost. Subaru's AWD system is totally mechanical and is always pushing power to all 4 wheels. Great system, just not too sure about the CVT's yet....the newer ones I guess are better, but the older CVT's had a lot of issues from my understanding.
Thanks for the great explanation of the differences between the transfer case modes. Does you Jeep have a front axle disconnect for the 2H mode? I wonder how the computer controls FAD in 4H-Auto mode. Is the front axle always connected in 4H-A even if the rear tires may never slip and torque is rarely sent to the front differential or does FAD automatically kick in and out in sync with the 4H-A distribution picked by the computer...
Hey tyurek, I'm happy to hear that you liked the video. The link to the forum discussion below might have more information for you. I hope it helps. Cheers. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/selec-trac-full-time-4x4-4wd-system-discussions.1267/
Hey R Goodman, Thanks for your feedback on the video. Much appreciated. I've heard online that some who have it, just leave it on all winter. What I believe, and what is the legal answer, is that it can in 4H Auto and be driven safely at highway speeds. I hope that's helpful. Cheers.
I'd been driving on 4H(Part time) since I bought my 2021 jeep wrangler 4xe in September 2021. I just saw your video a couple of days ago when we had a blizzard and switching to 4H really give the vehicle a fun and safe drive. My question is, being on 4H(Part time) gear for a longer period of time somehow did a damage to my wrangler?? I have an engine light on lately :((🙏
Hey Arlene, I don't believe it would cause the check engine light to come on, but since it's under warranty, when you take it in to the dealer, they can let you know for sure. Let us know when you find out? Cheers.
Hey Othman, I've read on the forums that some people leave it on all the time, but others suggest that you wear out parts of the clutch pack in the system and also believe it could affect fuel efficiency. I don't know directly however.
Hey Knuckle Sandwich, I'm cautious giving anyone advice when treading through such deep water. Perhaps someone in a local Jeep club can share with you what they do in such circumstances, as I have limited experience with deep water like that. Sorry mate. Cheers.
Hey thanks for the video, I am test driving a sahara unlimited and was going to buy it tomorrow but realized that it doesn't have the select trac . I think this will be a deal breaker due to the winter conditions I drive on a daily basis in the winter.
Hey Todd, Glad I could help. Thats why I got the Selec Trac. I have questioned forum members, and basically, anyone who had one is glad they have it. Cheers.
My Wrangler did not have select trac transfer case either. Thankfully the one that comes standard, command trac, is awesome! I live in Wisconsin, and it snows a lot, So when it seems you need it, Shortly after leaving the driveway, shift it to 4Hi. Very simple to use. If the weather/conditions improve, shift it back to 2wd. It becomes etched in the brain, and it's kind of fun too!
Hey Lalthan, It gives the driver control over which gear the Jeep is operating. I explain it more in this video... ua-cam.com/video/3JdB3ETJAPg/v-deo.html I hope it helps. Cheers.
It’s an option. In 2018 it was only available as an option in the JL Sahara, but I understand that it is available on other Jeep Wrangler JLs as an option.
Hello Dino, My name is Dietmar. I am from Austria / Europe. I have a new Wranger JL Sahara. First of all: Your videos are very interesting and good! And now I have a question for the expert. Maybe you can answer it or - much better - you make a video about it. We would like to add a front and rear diff lock. As I know, this can work because the Sahara has a DANA 44 (rear) and 35 (fron) axle. Usually traction control on 4L brakes a spinning wheel. Will that work if you add a diff lock on both axles? Regads Dietmar
Hello Dietmar, I'm not an expert on that sort of thing. However, after my Overlanding Cape Breton video, it was something that I was considering also. I'd have to do a bit more research on the topic before I'd have much to say. Maybe it will be a video later. Thank you for watching from Austria. I've been to Vienna, a lovely city. Cheers.
when I am in 4l going down a rocky hill where there's lots of weight transfer front and back ,, I hear some clacking in the gears sometimes,, is this normal ?
I bought a 2020 Sahara and got stuck coming up my driveway in light snow in 2H. What’s the best way to get into 4H? From P? Or neutral? Or what? Thanks!
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thanks. I have another question :). We're getting some snow where I live, so on my way to work this morning I easily put it into 4H. When I was backing into my parking spot it was not acting right. I couldnt steer it right. It's like I was stuck. Can you not go in reverse in 4H?
@@andreasantora7363 If there area where you were backing into your parking spot was fairly clear of snow, your gears may have been binding. 4H should only be used on loose surfaces like snow, gravel, sand, dirt, and mud, not pavement. If you were on fairly cleared roads but going straight, it isn't a big of an issue as when you are turning the wheel, like when parking. The inside and outside wheels during a turn would be turning at different rates, and cause your gears to bind. This may cause damage to your gears, so I'd recommend that if it's not very snowy or icey, take it out of 4H. I hope that helped.
You dont know how confused I was. I had a previous generation wrangler and that car required quite the process to put in 4wd. Now with my 2020 sahara its much different but from the looks of it much easier
Ive have been puttig transmission into Nuetral, and completly off gas pedal when shifting from 2H to 4H. Is doing so a safe option aswell as leaving transmission in drive while making shift from 2h to 4h as shown in this video? Thank you, Brandon 😇
You are doing it correctly. You just don't want to be applying power when shifting, it can cause stress to the transfer case, as well as a sudden jolt if wheels are spinning, and can cause damage to your drive lines, transfer case, and transmission, and axles. if it is done under heavy acceleration or while tires are spinning.
what is best to have true 4x4 where all wheels are locked to spin at the same rate. the LSD is not locking. the different models confuse the hell out of me and it seems the only model is the rubicon that has true 4x4. is there an option that is not rubicon that has true locked 4x4 please?
@@CheaperJeeperTV @john madsen you can buy aftermarket front and rear diff locks. this is what the rubicon has. the lower models only have the centre diff lock so power is sent to the front and back 50/50 but if one front wheel goes up in the air all the 50% front power would go to that wheel.
Hello Ardalan, If you put the transfer case into 4wd, when you shift your gear lever into reverse, you would still be in 4wd. Thanks for watching this video. I hope it was helpful. Cheers.
there is no mention of starting out in 4H. are you able to just start the vehicle and put it right into 4H for snowy roads or do you have to be driving? may be a silly question but want to err on the side of caution as to not cause any issues!
Hey Cristin, Fair question. I understand that it is possible to put it directly into 4H as well as 4L when staring out. You could just possibly find it tricky to get the gears to mesh without hearing a bit of the grinding noise. Cheers.
@@johnreno8909 That is true that 2H can be used on dry pavement. My understanding is that 4H Part Time can only be used on loose surfaces. In contrast, I believe that 4H Auto engages the front differential, but it only sends power to the front wheels when the system detects slippage. Thats whyI believe the people in the northern states or Canada love this feature because sometimes on the highway, you will have snow, but then may run into patches of pavement. It's that type of scenario I believe that the 4H Auto system was designed to address. I still wouldn't leave it on when on 100% dry pavement, as it isn't necessary or efficient to have the front diff engaged.
@@CheaperJeeperTV i wish that 4h-part time could be used life time on dry clean pavement at any speed and at any conditions. exactly like on super-select Mitsubishi has. that's a little bit frustrating for wrangler. and another really frustrating is that they do not offer 2dr diesel version as well. i hope they will consider that in the nearest future.

2021 jeep wrangler sport s. I just bought this truck last week. Pick it up this wed! But i want to know that i have got both auto and maunal. So there "m" on auto. So when i want to use maunal. How do i drive it? I used do maunal old way you know 1 to 5. Etc stuff like that but. This one different. Like you just simple click it up up up or down down down we all use 3 gas brake and you know. So this one only has 2 gas and brake. So how doe it work? Do i have to take off gas than change up to 2 than touch gas after? Or can i just keep on gas and change 123456 by just click it? Hey James, I have a video about how to do all that when in 4 Low in the trail. However, you have many more questions that would be best answered in person when you get to the dealer, rather than in this limited space. I’m sure they will answer all your questions at pick-up time. Have fun. Cheers.
Yep. I even have it in 2H most of the time in the winter too. With the Jeep Wrangler's high clearance, and good snow tires, I only need 4H n the most severe conditions. Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thank you for this video. You have the best explanation. I was going to ask the same question but I'll adda few more: 1. Can we have it in 4H and driver at any speed ? 2. Can you switch from 2H to 4H while moving ? 3. My shifter feels hard (for the 4WD). Is that normal ? I didn;t want to pull hard. 4. is it normal that it burns twice as much (gas) as my Honda Accord ? 4 cylinders too. 5. When it's snowing, should we have it on 4H all the time ? 6. if we forget to put it back in 2H, (and stays in 4H), can it stay like that w/o damaging something ? We got one a few weeks ago and have zero knowledge in Jeeps, but we like it since we just had Snow in Chicago. Thanks
@@lupitaladechicagovlogs980 Hey Lupita de ChicagoVLogs, 1) I don't know if you can drive in 4H at "any" speed. If conditions warrant that you have 4H activated, you wouldn't want to be going too fast anyway, for safety. 2) Yes you can switch from 2H to 4H while moving. It is the recommended/preferred way I believe. 3) I believe they are to shift firmly. I have read on forums where some people say there\irs is harder to shift than others, and that some say it gets easier with more use, but it is supposed to feel firm, I believe. 4) It will definitely burn more gas that a Honda Accord, for a lot of reasons, size, weight, tires, 4wd, etc. I did a video on my Jeep's fuel efficiency if you wanted to compare your Jeep to another. ua-cam.com/video/k2AfToUZyKA/v-deo.html 5) I'd suggest having it in 4wd only if it's necessary. I am up in Canada, and find that due to the high clearance, and my good snow tires, that I do not have to put it in 4wd unless I am in deep snow or slippery conditions. 6) You should not leave it in 4H indiscriminately, as you will damage the gears. When you drive in 4H, you need to be in loose road conditions, like snow, gravel, soil or sand. If you drive on dry pavement and make turns, the difference in inner and outer wheel spin, will cause gears to bind, hop, and possibly cause a lot of damage. I am new to Jeep too. I made a bunch of videos to show my ownership experience, as well as some DIY maintenance videos that you might also find helpful. Thanks for watching. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. Very useful info that we didn't ask the sales guy. And to be honest we didn't have the questions at the time. We realized there was a 2nd shifter days later. We are in Chicago (and are from Mexico) but we'll definitely want to see what Canada is like. And we'll visit once the stupid Virus and it's (new) variants are gone for good. Have a good day !
Great Video! thank you exactly what I was looking for. Question, if you increased your tire size from factory would you have to do anything to the transfer case with select trac or will it work fine with larger setups and lift?
Hey Joe, Thanks for the feedback on the video. I asked a friend about your question, who would know more about this sort of thing , and he said, "putting a lift should not impact the selec-trac. you just need to use a programmer to adjust the speedo, this way the computer know the exact speed you are going." I hope that is helpful. Cheers.
Hey TL, I put mine in 4 H Auto, Selec Trac, in winter on highway roads where there are dry then icy patches. I use 4H when off roading. I hope that helped. Cheers.
Hi Nas, I’ve looked that up on the forums too and didn’t find anyone willing to commit to a maximum speed. Mostly the responses I’ve read related to your question state that if you are safely able to drive at speed anyway, you shouldn’t need to be in 4WD. I have SelecTrac in my Jeep and I am able to drive at HWY speed with that. Sorry I couldn't offer anything more definitive for you about that. Cheers.
I’ve heard on some online forums and UA-cam videos that there are some who just leave it in all the time. I haven’t come across or read anything to suggest that you can’t.
What if I get stuck in snow in 2H (even though should have switched if there was that much snow) can I just switch it to 4H or 4L while stuck? Or what if the road im driving on has rough patches of snow but also dry pavement? Wouldn’t think switching back and forth would be good
Hey Boy 2 Quick, it is still possible to switch it into 4H if you’re not moving. I believe It’s just recommended if possible to do it while rolling. Maybe it has something to do with gears possibly grinding? If it’s in 4H and you hit patches of snow and then dry pavement, I believe you still should be ok as long as there are no turns when in 4H. When turning on pavement in 4H it’s likely that your gears will start binding and your tires may start hopping. It’s not good for the gears. Cheers.
Hey Andres, Thank you for subscribing and giving me feedback on the video. I'm very happy that you enjoyed it. Thanks for subscribing as well. I made a follow-up to this video on how to use 4-Low offload. You may find that one helpful also. Feel free to let me know. Thanks again. Cheers.
My owners manual states to switch from 2H to 4H the vehicle should be moving at least 70kms/h. What if I switch from 2H to 4H from a stand still, vehicle is still in D mode but I’m at a red light, or I’m either in P mode, is it ok if I’m switching then? No harm done to the transfer case, or does the vehicle needs to be in motion while switching?
The shift can be done at any speed up to 55mph, or whatever it is in km/h....and can also be done at a stop. If you want to shift to 4WD Low Range, you'll need to be creeping forward 2-3mph shift transmission to neutral, shift transfer case firmly and quickly from 2H or 4H through neutral without pausing or stopping in neutral, and into 4L....then shift the transmission back to drive. To shift out of 4L to 4H or 2H, you need/should be moving forward 2-3mph shift transmission to neutral, and shift transfer case to desired range, without stopping or pausing in neutral...then shift the transmission back to drive. The reason you need to be moving forward slightly when shifting to or from low range 4WD is due to the transfer case's gearing, it isn't synchronized, so oftentimes if you try the shift procedure while stopped to go into or out of low range 4WD you'll have a lot of trouble getting it to engage into whatever you are trying to select as the gears won't be lined up properly, so moving forward slightly gives enough gear movement for the gears to line up and engage.
Jason, If you're just driving around town, and you're able to be going at a fair speed, I believe 2H would be fine with a Jeep. If it's snowy, and such that you need to slow down, due to it being slippery due to snow, then 4H in selec trac would be good. If you don't have selec trac, and you're in snowy conditions in town, 4H is ok, as long as when you turn, you are not on dry pavement. If you are in 4H on dry pavement, you will hear your gears binding. I hope that was helpful. Cheers.
Hi Mira Mira, I believe you can as I think I have read elsewhere that it is possible. I think I’ve read that doing so may decrease fuel efficiency, and should you be in a scenario that requires 4H, perhaps going fast might not be very safe. Also, don’t forget that when in 4H, you should not be on dry pavement, as making turns could cause damage to the gearing. I hope that helps.
@@CheaperJeeperTV thanks for respon but i still dont get it about it...4Hauto can i imagine like four wheel drive other car can i used in highway?? Or what...sorry cause i bit new for this kind transmission
For 4H Auto, I have read that some people always leave it on. I believe the transfer case is engaged to the front drive shaft, but it doesn’t engage to the front differential until slippage in the rear tires is detected. I believe this might slightly reduce fuel efficiency and possibly involve wear over time to the engaged components. So although I believe I have read that some people chose to leave it on all the time, I chose not to, for the reasons I just mentioned. I hope that helps. Cheers
Hey, you are welcome. Yes it is possible to do it when stationary, it’s just that if you have some motion you can slip it into gear a little bit easier. I do it while stationary now and again, it should not be a problem. Cheers.
Great video, but when I tried to put my 2020 into 4WD, it was so hard, I thought I was going to break the shifter - this video displayed it shifting like butter - not my experience :-(
Hey there. I’ve heard from some that their shifter was stiff initially but eased up after a couple uses. If it’s “too” stiff I’d ask the dealer about it. Cheers.
The manual says not to pause the transfer case in N but I find it difficult to go from 4low directly into 4hi and sometimes it goes right into 2h. Is it ok to pause it in N prior to going into 4h? And is it problematic if it does go directly to 2h by accident?
I never realized that 'till you mentioned it. I must have just had the ignition on run, while parked in the driveway for the shot. It isn't on when driving. Sorry for the confusion.
Hey Chima. I've read it explained on forums that in 2H, just the rear differential is engaged, so it in theory is the most fuel efficient setting. It makes sense, but I haven't seen anyone do a test on it. I hope that helps. Cheers.
Hi Tara, I have heard that for some it’s a “little” stiff initially, but gets easier after a couple uses. If yours is very still, I’d have it checked out at the dealership. Best of luck.
Hey Paja, From what I have read on the forums, people have shared the opinion that if conditions are such that you need to be in 4WD, you shouldn’t be going at highway speeds. So, If you are able to be driving at highway speeds you wouldn’t need to be in 4WD. However, if you have the Selec Trac option I believe that would be suitable for the conditions you described. I hope that helped.
@@CheaperJeeperTV hmm... I just bought new suzuki jimny, first car i have with reductor gearshift. So i am not sure about when i can use 4h. But thanks for answer anyway !
Hi Saniya, The only time that I am aware of that requires the gear lever to be in neutral, is when you are switching between 4H and 4L. However, I believe, if you were switching between 2H and 4H, as long as all 4 wheel are spinning at the same speed(or stopped), you would be fine whether your gear lever was in D or in N.
Hey Duchess21, I'm a new Jeep owner as well, and as of yet I have not been on sand, just trails in Northern Ontario. What I understand is important off road, AND on sand, is to reduce your tire pressure, like down to 21 psi. The type of tires you have is important also. You for sure would benefit from being in 4H. Given my lack of experience on sand, that's all I'd be able to say. I'd post onto the forums or in your local Jeep Club FaceBook group for more. Cheers
@@paramjitsahota4864 hey Paramjit, Tires can “look” good but they can be made of different compounds such that some may be better on wet or icy roads compared to another brands. Also, check your tire pressure. There is a sticker on the driver side door jam which indicates what your tires should be set at. Many times, new cars off the lot have tire pressure set too high. Cheers.

@@CheaperJeeperTV why does it seem like the gears bind when I back up with the wheels turned.
Hey sunseasurff1000,
I believe when in four wheel drive, the gears are not designed to operate differentially for the different spin going on at each tire when in a turn. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV got it , thank you for the reply.
I had an older 1988 Wrangler and you had to stop and put it in neutral to shift the transfer case. The new JL is so much better, but my transfer case lever is SUPER difficult to change. Seems like yours is rather easy. I may take it in to have it looked at as its only got 1500 miles on it.
Hey MyBluJL,
For sure take it in. As you were able to see in my video, the transfer case shifts fairly smooth.
While I have your attention, I really think you do a great job on your videos. Seems we are both tending to a common theme, doing stuff for our Jeeps economically.

Hey Mike, I’m glad you like the video. In 2018 4 H auto, the Selec Trac, was an option only on the Sahara. I believe it’s available on other models now. There is a video on how to use 4 low off-road, if interested. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thanks bro, I'm gonna check it out, more info on it would help
Thanks. Coming from a TJ it's very similar but also and very different.😉

Wow I want to learn more how to drive Jeep Wrangler it to uses part 4X4
Hey Peace Love, the Part Time 4x4 is nice to have when you're on roads that change from dry to slippery. Cheers.
Hey Drizit,
I really appreciate your valuable comments.

great video - but wait, "4H Part Time" is actually 4wd in full time?
Hey antmon,
Thank you for the feedback on the video.
I don't know, I didn't make up the terminology. lol
I hope it helped a little.

Moab costs more than Rubi ? Does it have lockers and sway bar release ?
@@TheSchmed I think you know the answer to that. For me, the Moab's interior was nicer than the Rubicon.
As for your question, the suggested answer and points of view can be found in this thread. www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/maximum-speed-in-4h.21585/

Mine doesn’t have any of this just 2 wheel 4h neutral 4L in that order
Hey Neon,
My Jeep in this video has the "Selec Trac" option.

Hi, great video, what's the max speed you can drive at in 4H auto?
Cheers.
@CheaperJeeperTV will let you know for sure. Thanks again for a very informative video, keep it up👍
Hey Arlene, Thank you for the feedback. Cheers.
Is there a reason one wouldn’t just keep the car in 4H Auto at all times? Thanks for an awesome video
Hey Othman, I've read on the forums that some people leave it on all the time, but others suggest that you wear out parts of the clutch pack in the system and also believe it could affect fuel efficiency. I don't know directly however.
A handful of times every year, I encounter patches of 2-3 feet of water on the roads.. which shift mode would you put it in for those situations?
Hey Knuckle Sandwich, I'm cautious giving anyone advice when treading through such deep water. Perhaps someone in a local Jeep club can share with you what they do in such circumstances, as I have limited experience with deep water like that. Sorry mate. Cheers.
My transfer case is very… very… very stiff.. just got a 21 Jeep Sahara and shifting into 4H or down to 4L is very difficult.. maybe needs a break in
Hey Jamie,
I've read that in the forums. I hope that it eases up for you.

What is the function of M+ & - marked on the left side of the Drive shift ?
Hey Lalthan,
It gives the driver control over which gear the Jeep is operating. I explain it more in this video... ua-cam.com/video/3JdB3ETJAPg/v-deo.html

My question is I don't see 4H auto on some wrangler model, so exactly in which model has it?
It’s an option. In 2018 it was only available as an option in the JL Sahara, but I understand that it is available on other Jeep Wrangler JLs as an option.
I’ve always been told that you must be completely stopped and in neutral when going in and out of 4 LO.
Hey Timothy, you can do it that way too. You will find many videos that show that it’s safe to do it both ways I believe. Cheers.
Thanks! That was very helpful
Hey Ahmed, I’m glad it was helpful. You may find the videos in the maintenance playlist helpful also. Cheers.
@@CheaperJeeperTV they were helpful indeed, subscribed!
Hello Dino,
My name is Dietmar.
Cheers.
Thanks Dino for your answer. Hope we can figure it out by ourselves. If we do, I´ll let you know.
Nicely explained, thanks.
Hey Adnan, thank you for the feedback. I have a follow up video to this coming out next Wednesday if you’re interested. Cheers.
when I am in 4l going down a rocky hill where there's lots of weight transfer front and back ,, I hear some clacking in the gears sometimes,, is this normal ?
It does t sound familiar to my own experience. You may want to try asking in a Jeep Wrangler forum or at the dealer. 🤷🏻♂️
I bought a 2020 Sahara and got stuck coming up my driveway in light snow in 2H. What’s the best way to get into 4H? From P? Or neutral? Or what?
Thanks!
Hi Cindi, I believe you are still able to get into 4H when in D and not actually moving forward.
Hey Adam, Yep, once it’s explained and demonstrated like in the video, it’s fairly smooth to deploy. Thanks for watching. Cheers
Ive have been puttig transmission into Nuetral, and completly off gas pedal when shifting from 2H to 4H. Is doing so a safe option aswell as leaving transmission in drive while making shift from 2h to 4h as shown in this video?
Thank you, Brandon 😇
I believe so. Cheers.
Hi can you help me my car in P parking and still moving and I can’t start the engine ?
Sorry. I don't know what exactly is broken, but obviously, you'll need to have the dealership fix that. Good luck.
what is best to have true 4x4 where all wheels are locked to spin at the same rate. the LSD is not locking. the different models confuse the hell out of me and it seems the only model is the rubicon that has true 4x4. is there an option that is not rubicon that has true locked 4x4 please?
Hey John, Not that I am aware of. Cheers.
Thank you for note. Is possbile to use 4x4 in revise mode?
Cheers.
can use "4H-auto" mode on high speeds on dry summer highway????
Hey John, I believe so. It won’t help your fuel efficiency but I’m curious why you would use it on dry pavement?
@@CheaperJeeperTV i am just curious. they say that only 2H mode can be used on dry clean pavement.

So 2h is basically for everyday driving ...? Normal roads
Yep. I even have it in 2H most of the time in the winter too. With the Jeep Wrangler's high clearance, and good snow tires, I only need 4H n the most severe conditions. Cheers
@@CheaperJeeperTV Thank you for this video. You have the best explanation. I was going to ask the same question but I'll adda few more:

@@lupitaladechicagovlogs980 Hey Lupita de ChicagoVLogs,
1) I don't know if you can drive in 4H at "any" speed.
I did a video on my Jeep's fuel efficiency if you wanted to compare your Jeep to another. ua-cam.com/video/k2AfToUZyKA/v-deo.html
5) I'd suggest having it in 4wd only if it's necessary.
Cheers.

And we'll visit once the stupid Virus and it's (new) variants are gone for good. Have a good day !
You are very welcome.
Cheers.
Just got a 2022 from alberta. Do you put yours in 2H in summer and then 4Auto in canada winter?
Hey TL, I put mine in 4 H Auto, Selec Trac, in winter on highway roads where there are dry then icy patches. I use 4H when off roading. I hope that helped. Cheers.
Hi thanks for the video. Is there a max speed limit when on 4H auto? Or is it same as 2H thanks
Cheers.
How long could you drive in the snow at 70kph while in 4H part time mode?
I believe as long as you would like to.
Is there a recommended max speed you are advised to stay below when in 4W Auto?

70 kms/h? I have never heard that.
I’m confused. What do you use if you need to drive on pavement in a very steep incline in AWD in low gear?
You use 4 H auto.
4H Part Time and 4L are for off road situations. Cheers
So if you’re just driving around town what gear should it be in
Jason, If you're just driving around town, and you're able to be going at a fair speed, I believe 2H would be fine with a Jeep. Cheers.
Can i go fast with 4h auto and 4h...thanks to answer it🙏
Hi Mira Mira,
I believe you can as I think I have read elsewhere that it is possible.
Cheers

From what I have read on the forums, people have shared the opinion that if conditions are such that you need to be in 4WD, you shouldn’t be going at highway speeds. So, If you are able to be driving at highway speeds you wouldn’t need to be in 4WD.

Hi I’m a new Jeep owner, so I put it on N and change the gear to 4H?
Hi Saniya, The only time that I am aware of that requires the gear lever to be in neutral, is when you are switching between 4H and 4L. However, I believe, if you were switching between 2H and 4H, as long as all 4 wheel are spinning at the same speed(or stopped), you would be fine whether your gear lever was in D or in N.

New jeep owner, what gear would you recommend for sand?
Hey Duchess21, I'm a new Jeep owner as well, and as of yet I have not been on sand, just trails in Northern Ontario. What I understand is important off road, AND on sand, is to reduce your tire pressure, like down to 21 psi. The type of tires you have is important also. You for sure would benefit from being in 4H. Given my lack of experience on sand, that's all I'd be able to say. I'd post onto the forums or in your local Jeep Club FaceBook group for more. Cheers
My Jeep skidded couple of times when I braked on wet road.. do I need to change from 2 H to 4 H during rain.
I think that would be more a function of how good or bad your particular tires are in those wet rainy conditions.
@@CheaperJeeperTV . It’s an 2020 & tires look good.
Cheers.
