Thanks. I couldn't remember if i could shift into 4wheel high on the go. Just bought a 2000 tj. Has been years since i had my 93 cherokee. Nice jeep Bro.
Thanks bro
Good video ! I have 4:56 gears with my 35”
Tires , in low gear you just need to let the clutch out slowly without any gas pedal and it just crawls lol ,
Mine does the same with 3.07 gears. It will idle through most of the trail unless there is a steep incline then I have to give it some throttle
My 2005 TJ 4 wheel drive linkage was all rusted and the bushings deteriorated, so I was stuck on 4 hi. I replaced the entire assembly with an all new cable system, so much easier to shift now.
Ya I hear the cable is so much better. I need to do the upgrade myself
This is an upgrade that is on my list, Mike, it would be awesome if you could do an install video on it!
Definitely if I pick one up I’ll do a video but I just had my linkage cut and extended and welded back up so at the moment it works great
I have 22, 4 door jeep wrangler, beautiful sarge green, I’m moving very up north soon and knowing what gear to be in when there’s a foot of snow it very helpful, great explanation
Hey some one added this video to TJ jeep owners clube. I mentioned your channel for people to check out and hit that like for yeah!.
Thanks man! Appreciate that
Great video Mike! I look forward to seeing some offroad action when you go out Sunday!
Thanks man
Great video and explanations, just got my 04 TJ a month ago. Looking to try some easy trails at Ganaraska this Spring / Summer!
I think we’re doing ganaraska next weekend so we might see you there lol
@@SmokinMonkeyOG Ah, Im changing my diff and transfer case fluids before. Aiming to go for Mid-Late May! But will hit you up when I do go
yo mike- thanks- I already knew a little but I have a 90 YJ and restoring it--- just got it back with new springs..... and lift....
Nice! Sounds like a good project
@@SmokinMonkeyOG yessir brother. I’m down here in Carolina beach
I see your an Amazon guy also
Was lookin at a few things
Hey question
I plan on pulling this YJ with my motor home
What would you suggest for a tow system under or around 400 bucks
Honestly haven’t looked into anything like that so I wouldn’t have any idea
Thanks for the very clear explanations !!
Very informative, thank you!
Good information for all, cheers!
Thanks man
Thanks man
Thank you good vidro
Thanks!
More Good Advise, thanks.
Wish I could have made it out on Sunday dude. Next time!
I never made it myself lmao but we’re planning to go out this weekend if you’re free. I’ll message you
Thanks for the video! I just bought a Jeep and tried out 4WD for the first time and discovered the "hopping" effect in a U-turn. I was very perplexed and went to some forums and discovered what an idiot I was. It was a bit reassuring that others did so as well and haven't destroyed their car :D
But after this video I'm more sure about when to use what. And that I can try out 4L in a straight line. Wouldn't want to try it out first in the sand :)
Can you perhaps tell me what you would do when you try a steeper incline (in 4L) and you lose power, so you have to turn off to the side? I figure you shouldn't do a sharp turn, but you would also not want to end up perpendicular to the hill for the fear of rolling. So what's the advised thing to do?
Not sure what you mean by have to turn to the side? If you’re going up the hill in four low and lose power you can roll back without turning the steering
Great!!! Super helpful! Thanks.
Good video. I see you have LED headlights. Tried installing LEDs on my 2001 TJ but I had a problem with the flickering at all times. Took them off. What LED lights are you running? How did you overcome the flickering issue?
Mine never flickered but you can just buy an anti flicker module on Amazon they plug in between the light and the Jeep wiring harness. Fairly cheap too on Amazon
@@SmokinMonkeyOG I tried that. Found a anti flicker harness on Amazon didn't work. What brand are your lights? Can I find them on Amazon?
Mine are LOYO. Some off brand probably from china but they have held up for years with no moisture and they don’t flicker.

great info bra
Thx man!
Had a solenoid fail on my 86 Cherokee and it shifted me to 4h at 80mph and sheared the transfer case off in seconds 😢
That’s super weird, those have a fully mechanical transfer case, the only shifting is done mechanically with the handle
@@SmokinMonkeyOGmine had a push button shifter on the dash… maybe I’m mistaken on the year.. it was 20 something years ago
So if I wanna use my automatic transmission tj wrangler 4 high do I have to have it on park or in what gear to use it and what gear to disengage it?
Neutral to change into or out of 4Lo but you can put it into 4hi and 2hi while driving up to around 45mph I believe
@@SmokinMonkeyOG thanks mate
I have the same exact jeep same model i tried the 4 wheel drive on dry surface ... it ended up breaking the rear wheel shaft connector 😅😅
Ya they don’t like 4hi or 4lo on pavement
What happened when it broke? Was it drivable?
If you break an axle shaft in the rear it’s not drivable because the wheel will literally fall off. The shaft is what holds the wheel on and if it breaks you need to get a tow
I’m trying to figure out my posilok on my 87 YJ. Last weekend it seemed the front axle did not help/turn when I got wedged in between some rocks and my passenger rear tire was off the ground. I had no movement but I thought me posilok was engaged. I finally got out by stuffing rocks under the high tire. I was always in 4 low.
If my posilok was engaged on my front axle what should have happened?
If is wasn’t engaged what should have happened?
Completely stumped.
Maybe someone else has some insight on this but I’ve never had any experience with a posilok myself so I can’t say
When ur trying to get someone unstuck in the sand , 4lo or 4hi?
I would go 4 low first but if you find you need more wheel speed to get moving then 4 hi will be better for that
👍😎😎4x4 beast
Am I supposed to see a light turn on on the dash when it engages into 4x4? I have a 2004 TJ manual
I’ve heard that some models of TJ have the light, mine does not. Not sure if it’s a manual/automatic thing or just burnt out or even something that they could’ve added in later model TJs. But I have never seen it myself lol
I have a 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport 5 speed manual and am new to 4WD. I have a lever. So you’re saying I don’t have to be at a complete stop to shift into 2L or 4L? What’s the purpose of 2L?
There’s no 2L in a stock wrangler. Only if you buy an upgraded transfer case will you have 2L. Yours has 2HI 4HI and 4LO. You can shift between 2HI and 4HI while driving but you must be at a complete stop and in neutral when shifting into or out of 4LO.
Ok do you need to depress the clutch when putting it in 4wd? Also when shifting into 4hi do you need to be in neutral and pressing in the clutch? So basically does the clutch have to be depressed when shifting and for 4 hi do you need to be in neutral to shift? These questions apply for a manual. Thanks
I drive a manual too. You don’t need to press the clutch ever to change the transfer case settings. From 4hi to 2hi and the other way around you can be moving at speed and shift at anytime. For 4lo to 4hi and 4hi to 4lo you always need to be stopped and in neutral
@@SmokinMonkeyOG ok cool. So from 2hi to 4hi or vice versa do you need your transmission shifter to be in neutral? You mentioned having that in neutral at some point. Ok just reread it. So only when shifting from 4 low to 4 high and vise versa you need the transmission shifter in neutral? Sorry getting confused with the transmission shifter and gear box neutral.
@reedcarpenter2994 yup only for 4hi to 4lo and vide versa. The rest you don’t need neutral and can be driving
What about taking it OUT of four-wheel? I guess there isn't any steps?
You reverse the steps what do you mean? 2hi-4hi you can shift anytime back and forth. From 4Lo or into 4Lo always need to be in neutral and at a full stop
@@SmokinMonkeyOG thanks for the info. Going from 4lo, back to high? I tried it stationary and there was some grinding. Park, neutral? What do you normally do?
Neutral
If I’m driving through sand on the beach should I go in 4l or 4h
I would use 4h
Ok thank you. So neutral then shift to 4h and put it in drive and I’m good?
Actually you can shift from 2h to 4h while moving just let off the throttle and shift and you’re good. If you do stop you don’t need to engage neutral for 2h and 4h only when going from 4L to 4h you need to be in neutral otherwise it’s fine to be moving
💯💯💯
What gear ratio are you running with thoes 33s?
3.07 lmao before you say anything I know it needs a re gear but I honestly just want new axles or maybe even a whole new Jeep lol 😂
@@SmokinMonkeyOG I'm not judging, I'm currently on 3.07 and 31s, I've got a d44 posi and front auto locker with 3.73s going in, just repairing the spring perches on the d44, can't wait for the improvement.
That’s a nice setup!
@@SmokinMonkeyOG the d35 I'm taking out has a posi carrier, was rebuilt about 10k ago, don't know if you'd be interested in it, I'll have no use for it when I make the swap.
Ya I would, where you located? Message me on Instagram if you have it.
I am lost…
not yj manual
Never even sat in one to be honest so I can’t say anything about YJs. But this will apply to wranglers built in the last 25 years
