I moved from England to that area years ago and love it. Don't miss the UK roads with their potholes and speed bumps and width restrictions.
2024 golf r owner here. 3 months in. I looked at S3 before this update and for 10K more I just couldn't walk away from the R. Absolutely love it and agree the new gen S3 took the missing pieces. I just am not a fan of the front and rear styling. Like the old body better. At the end of the day though - these are all awesome cars and I hope they never go away. LMAO about the gears and transmission explanation. It made perfect sense to this 50 year old ;-)
They brought this in line with the Mercedes A class with the lights and grill. I like it.

Nice review mate, Audi have always done a great job with the S3, one of my mates has just picked up a 2015 model hatchback and it goes well and is a lot of fun!
Really impressed with the upgrades they’ve done, much more like the R performance pack

Ianthe drives a supercar. We're still waiting for that one. This s3 while subtle changes looks alot better than the previous one. Interior finish has been brought right up which needed doing. Only thing is 52k for a s3 saloon in vorsprung. Seems abit steep

I had an A1 courtesy car and the manual gearbox was rubbish. Stirring stew and so long gears could leave it in 2nd all round town

I have a 2023 s3 and in my opinion, the 2023 is the best looking s3 ever. I HATE this new design. Makes it look cheap honestly.

The reason for gears/gearbox explained in a very simplistic way:
If we only had one gear in the gearbox on a combustion engined car namely the first gear, it would rev up through the revrange very fast due to very low windresistance. One gear only would also limit for one the speed which would make the car of course very slow.
Secondly it would lead to the engine being overheated, resulting in a lot of mechanical parts breaking down very, very fast. And also the enginenoise would be unbearable.
To prevent all of this from happening we have a gearbox with multiple gears. The more powerful/faster the car, the more gears we have.
There´s of course more to it but like i said this is it explained in simple terms.😄
There´s also the thing with the flywheel but that has more to do with the engine and how fast a flywheel enables the car to rev. But that´s a story for another day 😅

I would rather answer the question by saying, "why do bicycles have multiple gears?".
It's because of mechanical advantage.
First gear has lots of torque to get you moving, but a very low top speed. Your feet move quickly, but the wheels move slowly.
Top gear has very little torque, but lots of speed. It would be difficult to go up a hill or start from a stop. Your legs turn slowly, but the wheels turn quickly.
The flywheel is only there to keep the engine turning between combustion events. Combustion pushes the piston down, but it then has to travel up, down, then up again before another combustion. The weight of the flywheel is what allows it to keep moving between pushes.
Electric motors have a much greater range of revolutions per minute, and all their torque is greatest at the lowest speed. Electric Porsches do use a two speed gear box so that at higher speeds, it can be more efficient.
You could put a massive engine in a car and only use one gear, but it's more efficient to use a smaller engine and use gears.
If you had massive quad muscles, you could ride your bike in top gear everywhere.

hate the front and back - older version so much better. yes to the HP bump and using same rear setup as the RS and Golf R but I just cant get passed the fact the front looks like any other plain jane A3 - no badging and the grill (insert puke emoji). terrible
