From what I remember, the rule of thumb for birdshot for defense is get #4 and larger. And I remember when 500 round boxes of 22LR at walmart was $15! Remington Hypervelocity is what it was. Those were the days! I think that was like 1998. I had a Ruger Mk2 Stainless 4" and a Feather AT22. I put a LOT of that walmart ammo through them.

First remember a self-home defense shooting is generally 21 feet or less. Then remember that even on an open bore shotgun, that's no choke at all, opens up very little at 21 feet or less. Then remember that a load of small bird shot weighs the same as a load of buck shot or slug in a given gauge. At 7 paces wth a 20 gauge shotgun loaded with the smallest low brass shot I could find, size 9, I was able to blow large nasty jagged holes through hard inch thick plywood. If someone tries to tell me that wouldnt also work on a human I'll tell them they're fkn stupid

FYI -Walmart stopped selling ammunition that can be used in semiautomatic rifles and handguns after a 2019 shooting at one of its stores in El Paso, Texas, killed 23 people. The company stopped selling assault-style weapons in 2015 and raised the minimum age to buy firearms and ammunition to 21, from 18, in 2018.Oct 30, 2020

Their statement mentioned not wanting to serve “short” rifles and handguns but wanting to serve hunters. It’s basically centerfire handguns, and a few intermediate cartridges 223/556, 300 blk, and 762x39r. They still carry 350 legend, 450 bushmaster, 6.5 Grendel, 22 WMR, 410 and some others that your average gun nerd would recognize as having excellent potential for dual use.
I suspect it was an easy no loss business decision as an AR guy clears the shelf of cases when he buys and grabs maybe some sardines and rice, while a 270 Win guy buys one box then wanders around filling the cart with folding chairs, ben gay, depends, and greeting cards. The ratio of loss leaders to marked up dry goods in each basket is miles apart.

Most Walmarts around here took the locked sliding glass off their shelves...... because they don't sell any ammo now :(

Wal-Mart does not carry handgun ammo anymore...it is an annoyance, but you are wise to pay their price on some of the shotgun and rifle ammo, it is generally as low as anyone else's...a few years ago that 100 shell case of birdshot was 23.99, so that new normal price is higher, but I completely agree a case is a handy thing to have...everyone says buckshot! only, but between a rock and hard spot use what ya got (I'd suggest a heavier shot, even 5 or 6, will perform better, and might be available)...there are lots of folks who can get to Wal-Mart, the bigger problem is not all stores carry guns/ammo...their firearm selection isn't great (zero handguns), but you might find a Henry .22 or a Mossberg 88, at a decent price...

You’d rather use 8 shot over a 22lr for self defense?? Craziness

Look around, pick up Rio brand shotgun rounds W/ the #4 shot. That is 21 .22 pellets, long brass. Powerful medicine.
