- In this video I cover the topic of wasps in the world of Beekeeing. Specifically how I discovered the biggest and best wasp trap in the world by accident!!
This year we have had a plague of wasps due to the warm spring. Our honey crop has been attracting thousands of wasps to the honey farm. So much so that it was causing a major problem.
I go in detail about why the wasps behaviour and why they become a nuisance late in the summer.
I also talk about how important wasps are to the ecosystem and especially to Gardeners.
But more importantly how I managed to deal with a major wasp problem at the bee farm.

So happy we don’t have wasps attacking my bees here in Australia
Nice wasp trap!!!! Good way to eliminate their field force!!! Orange soda works well in the traps too. Thanks!
We're thinking of storing our supers outside this year as last year they were in the shed and mice got in and we disposed of around €600 worth of equipment.
I'll definitely look at pallet wrap and pallet covers. Thanks Gruff
The combination of the two works great.
Mice can be such a pain
Many thanks for the info, Gruff. I have the exact same problem at one site and have ordered pallet covers today 👍
Make sure they are pallet wrapped first 😊👍🏻
Good job Gruff 👍🏽❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Rick 😊👍🏻
It's the same here in my area of Ireland. Wasps everywhere.
I've wrapped All the wet Super's, wasp traps around the apiary, and I've caught a lot.
Feels never ending
Great tip to use pallet wrap. I’ll get some to wrap the wet super towers that we have to store outside. Hopefully it’ll stop the water getting in to them.
It’s a great way to cover and protect them
I had wasps move into the roof section of my top bar hive which i removed, destroyed (by fire) and meshed the gaps. I then had a colony try and nest on the back of one of my national hives under the roof bit. A daft place for them as it was really exposed, also received trial by fire. Third one used an old rodent hole in the ground so i blocked it. They dug themselves out so they had naphtha poured down and sealed off again. No more nests and a lot flying around with white backs. Once the balsams gone, it's up to the jam traps to finish them off. I've utilised an old freezer for storing frames in which is perfect for the job. I'll be making it into a warming cabinet at some point. Excellent way to store frames on a small scale.
Wow what a nightmare!!!! On a much smaller scale we wrap ours in cling film after we have extracted the supers and put them in the freezer to kill off anything nasty and then stack and store in the garage. Great video as always
Freezers are great to stop wax moth
Good lad hopefully your sorted 😅
The cladding on your shed; is it steel roof sheets or actual steel or aluminium cladding?
It’s either a painted steel corrugated sheet or a plastic coated corrugated steel sheet.
Very common cladding.
Same sheets they use for roof and sides.
Thank you for the advice, I'll order some covers.
I have had 3 colonies driven out by wasps that have eaten all the contents of the Brood box. Can I reuse these brood frames or do i need to replace the drawn foundation with fresh? Thanks
You can reuse them if their not black
thank you
you should sell these giant traps next year
Your right 😅
if you made a transparent window(10cm x 10cm) in the pallet wrap by gluing a tough square of transparent plastic sheet into it, you could not only see the effectiveness of the trap but it would ensure that the wasps would be drawn to the light making the trap more effective, that is if it needs to be. When you sell them with the modification, I would need no more than 10% of your sales of the
product !!!!
I follow your site and it is excellent. It came as a great comfort to me when you posted that you had a extremely poor summer crop. Me to in Lancashire. I was beginning to think it was me that had lost my touch with the bees.

Ardderchog!
Diolch
I assume you're not going to try and get into those two pallets until after the first frost? 🤣
No 😂😂
Are the traps ok to use if you keep bee's?
Yes, only if you use a lure that the bees don’t go for.
What brand traps are you using?
Trapit
Does it work with asian hornets. Any trap works with wasps but the new issue is asian hornets
Also will you be the first to start sell a good range of anti asian hornet products.
Being Welsh from Holyhead i can tell you sometimes we do it well and sometimes exceptionally well.
Now is not the time to do it anything less than exceptionally well.
If you think it works with hornets send it to our friend in france and lets see the result.
Yes hopefully we will start stocking specific AH traps that doesn’t trap non target species
