  • Yellow jacket wasp traps are popular because so many people are annoyed by their in-your-face visits to picnics, honeybee yards, and bird feeders.
The most convenient control methods are disposable traps like Rescue (East of the Rockies) non-toxic all-in-one lure traps.
Commercially produced and sold wasp/hornet traps have to be sized right for marketing, storage, shipping and many other factors which may reduce and limit more effective designs.
It's fun to test and investigate which bait will attract wasps at different times of the year. It's also entertaining to devise large trap systems that exploit natural wasp behavior.
Wasps will investigate every tiny hole and opening in a structure.
By providing a tiny hole in a box that is dark inside, we have the opportunity to draw them in with food-related scents.
Once inside, they naturally will follow the light and are prone to enter clear or translucent bottles with a central riser or cone shape.
Once the optimum entry hole size and placement is identified, the next thing is cutting a standardized hole for the exit/trap entry.
After all of that is worked out, a more permanent bottomless box can be constructed from wood, metal, plastic etc. The material must be absolutely opaque in order to create that light/dark contrast.
I found the peanut-butter pretzel container to be the best "collector" as the plastic is stronger and it has a wide mouth lid through which I drilled a 2" diameter hole for the vertical riser which was made by cutting the top/bottom off of a 16 oz clear plastic bottle, then overlapping the plastic forming a cylinder that perfectly matched the 2" hole in the dark brown threaded lid. I used a soldering iron to "spot-weld" the plastic together simply by partially melting into both layers.
Cardboard for practice, wood for the final design is my preference.
The yellow-jackets were entering the system with great regularity.
So, I thought it would be something fun to share with UA-camrs.
After the bottles have enough wasps in them, simply drop them into a plastic bucket of hot tap water and they are finished. Clean and replace the bottle, or simply install the new one. No need to wash before using a soda bottle, that residue also attracts yellow jackets.

Those baggy traps are ment for spring time, when the queens come out of hibernation as it attracts queens the most. If you catch a lot of queens in the spring the less hives you have in the fall. Eventually it’ll get to the point where your only catching a few queens and you have a perimeter of no yellowjackets. Making it much safer for your beehives.

Great work. Fascinating tip on the use of dark and light spaces. I created a regular wasp trap but with an escape. Once it was buzzing with wasps an their colonies were all aware of the local food source I taped up the exit. This way it wasn't only stray scouts that were caught but a huge number of foragers.

    Love the solution.
Try adding a water container with hog poop (foul smell) inside a similar, separate cardboard box. This should attract black flies. Place 40’ away from the house. The water will evaporate (rate depends on amount of water and ambient temperature); so, it needs to refilled every so often with a new mix.

I wonder do they emit a vibration or pheromone call of distress to other yellow jackets that draws that consistent stream of them? We had a nest outside of my kitchen window (up in the soffetting) this year. Took two trips from pest control over a two-week span to get them all.

    • @FrederickDunn

They don't "call" each other in, but they are able to mark the entrance with pheromone so others from the same colony know where to locate the food resource.

Try a fuzzy bottom tablecloth flipped over to cover the boxes and protect them from rain. Maybe the ones landing on it will get their legs caught. I know hive beetles hate them. Some keepers cut them into 2 inch squares and put them in the corners of their hives. They get stuck and cant run away from the stinging bees.

How effective is this really? Like, there's still a nest somewhere close with thousands of them?

    • @FrederickDunn
      @FrederickDunn  8 місяців тому

This removes scouts, it's not going to eliminate a nest. Since you know the location of a nest, if it's a threat to people or pets etc... remove the nest. This box system takes out hundreds of wasps each day... but then, it will also depend on the wasp population where you are. Time of year is also important regarding bait. It's now October, so they are after jelly and jam... but please add apple cider vinegar to deter the valuable honey bees. Grape Jelly or Orange Marmelade will attract the most wasps as they are all after sweet nectar.

Yellowjacket wasps are native to North America, but the species that is most commonly considered a pest, the European yellowjacket (Vespula germanica), was introduced to the United States in the late 1800s. It is thought to have arrived in the country accidentally, on ships from Europe.
The European yellowjacket is now widespread in the United States, and it is considered to be one of the most common and troublesome wasp pests. It is known for its aggressive behavior and its painful sting. Yellowjackets can build large nests in a variety of locations, including inside homes and businesses. It's incredible how stupid these things are. Like how can they be smart enough to enter, but dumb enough not to be able to find their way out the way they came in? It's baffling to me.

I’ve used traps too and you basically don’t make much of a dent. If you trap a hundred in a day, it doesn’t do anything about the nearby nest that cranks out 200 new ones a day. Find the nest. Drown it at night with soapy water. Problem solved.

what kind of soap works best and best way to apply? My nests are under my deck in hard to reach spots that are like tunnels up above

Michelle Huber Dawn dishwashing liquid is what I have used in the past. A couple of gallons of water with 1/2 cup of the soap. At night, pour all of it down the hole in the ground. If you are treating actual yellow jackets (not paper wasps) and they are not in the ground, then soapy water won’t be enough. And if they are difficult to reach, hire someone out to take care of it. They are way too dangerous to deal with without equipment.
