    Today, most work places do not incentivize getting things done fast. They pay you salary or by the hour to sit at your desk or at the work site for minimum 8 hours a day and the folks who can be efficient and work faster are punished because they either get their work done and sit around or there is always more work to be done and they don’t feel motivated to work quickly since they know they’re still gonna be stuck at work once the task is completed.

      I would much rather work part time or on some sort or contract for this reason but unfortunately most serious and professional jobs out there aren’t like this. Honestly I would love to see the way work is done be improved because right now the slow workers are favored and the fast ones are unmotivated in my opinion.

    Ha, as a young ENTJ, can vouch lol. My family is absolutely convinced I’m lazy cause all they ever see me do is what I want to be doing. Fact is I can finish all the work for all my classes, all my jobs and chores in roughly 3hrs. Now admittedly it’s not usually the best job, but it’s certainly B’s or above in schoolwork and good enough to keep any major problems from arising.
    My mom has just realized recently that I am results oriented. I don’t care how good the work is, or how hard I work, or how I get there so long as I get the desired results with less loss.
    Another thing. I’ve noticed. I am more than willing to have things go badly and wind me in trouble so long as it means less work for me or it accomplishes a goal that I find worth the pain.

    To draw a distinction, I think for Se (maybe high Ne too) this manifests as a sort of "I'll be able to improvise in the moment, so I can handle it then." Which may be somewhat true, but some tasks can only be rushed so much. It sounds like for Te (maybe Te-Ni combo in particular?) you're doing this thing of plotting it out in your head beforehand, which saves you a lot of time when you come to it. Not in details necessarily, but in wrapping your head around roughly what you're going to do with that time and how you're going to do it, so when you get there, there are few surprises and little need to stop and process new information.

    • @ballislife9924
      @ballislife9924 Рік тому +2

      Yes, you explained it perfectly at the end. I'm an ENTJ, and that's exactly how I do it.
      I think about what I have to do in my head. And then there comes a point where I shit my pants, and I'm like "ok now I have to do it, or else I won't get the result." Then I just start and do it with little research because I already know how much and what I have to do.

  • @ParkerHorejs
    @ParkerHorejs 3 роки тому +45

    Thank you! As an INTJ, the idea that you can get into a cognitive trap thinking you are lazy is extraordinarily relatable. I often feel that I am failing somehow when I put the absolute minimum time into things, but the reality is that during those short times I am able to accomplish a lot more than most people can in the same time period. I also realized that a lot of the time I am procrastinating because I know I will be able to get the work done no matter how close I get to the deadline; there's something in me that just clicks when I'm under a time pressure and it's easier to get the work done. I'm not sure that's the healthiest way to do it, it's just what I've noticed.

    • @ParkerHorejs
      @ParkerHorejs 3 роки тому +6

      Also, another thought based on what you said about deadlines - I often find that it's also helpful to break something down into even smaller deadlines which I create for myself. For example, if I have to write an essay and it's due next week, I'll commit to having it halfway done halfway through the week. That sort of tricks my brain into a sense of urgency and creates a clearer picture of the timeline of my work as a sort of antidote to procrastination/prioritization of other things.

    Most of the time, I move because of a perceived deadline (and it stresses me out in the process of course), but I have trouble "inventing" my own deadline and brainwash myself into believing in it.
    I don't feel happy when I complete something because it's just one thing in the ocean of things to do.

    The problem is that we are smart enough to not allow ourselves to be tricked, even by ourselves. So if we get too far ahead of our responsibilities, we then slack off. I think you touched on the critical point. It's about managing the weight of responsibilities. We need to do something, to keep it in a comfortable range. Which means not removing too much or too little responsibility at a time. It's hard to break the habit of over or under doing it. It's hard to let go of feeling so light while ahead, and so strong getting there. It's weird to shift less weight around, and it feels like a blow to the ego to not do so much. In practice it allows our fi a chance to add it's contribution to the conciousness of our subjective existence, and then, even se and the other unconcious functions. The ego is the volitional force due to an imaginary reward of some kind of Godship to make any function dominate, we do much better though, when we are free to use whichever one is most resourced at the moment. Even the weaker ones.

    Man, in high school I used to stay up all damn night doing my homework. Some weeks I cumulatively got 4 hours of sleep... all week. Of course, in retrospect it didn't help that I took math & science classes as electives and put too much on my plate. But I definitely do not consider myself efficient. I consider myself thorough. Maybe it's Ti & Si partly, searching for just the right answer and wanting to learn everything, even if I'll never need it, Ne getting sidetracked with related tangents & multiple interpretations of the same question, but it really does take me forever to do a lot of things. I was also frequently the very last person to finish a test. I also frequently got the highest score and set the curve, but I always finished last, and even if I didn't I spent the rest of the period checking my work until the bell rang. People would say things to me like, "You're lucky you're so smart & it's so easy for you to understand this and get good grades," to which I would think (but not say) in response, "Ha! Easy? You have no idea how much effort goes into this... easy, my ass." Honestly, sometimes I just think I'm particularly "smart" at all, but I just put a lot of effort into understanding things because it's important to me. I am not a fast reader either. I probably actually read pretty slow. But I consume massive amounts of information and read the same thing over and over again until it makes sense to me.
    As for the phrase, "At your convenience," what's funny about that is I think that phrase actually motivates me to do it faster. It might be an Fe valuing thing, but the fact that it's a nice way to ask, rather than demanding, and respects my autonomy, makes me want to oblige faster. Perhaps it's also knowing that "at your earliest convenience," could be pure Fe anyway, and it could be masking the person's desire to have it done quickly, purely for the purpose of being polite. Maybe Fe PoLR types don't get that. But either way, if someone acts demanding and impatient, it really just makes me want to give them the middle finger and walk away.
    Deadlines only help me when they create a pure adrenaline surge before the deadline to help me get it done last minute. Realistically, I know I'm not gonna plan around a deadline. Ambiguous deadlines actually create situations in which it's easier to talk your way out of a late penalty and into getting extra time. lol
    I've actually never really associated Te with laziness though. That tendency to put reality on the backburner and come up with excuses for why you can't get it done is something I associate more with low Se, especially Se inferior & PoLR (INxJ & INxP). As a non-Te-user, what I see more with Te types is what comes across to me as a tendency to cut corners or use Te heuristics "shortcuts to thinking" that, from my perspective, sometimes results in mistakes or oversights. I also sometimes see TJs being seemingly unaware of how their personal Fi preferences influence their goals and sense of prioritization. Same thing happens with FPs, but they are more aware of their Fi and honest with themselves about how they rationalize what they are doing. And yes, of course, this is from my own perspective -- the perspective of someone who takes forever to do everything. So keep that in mind when I describe people "rushing" or "cutting corners;" it's relative to perspective.

So it can be endless doing doing doing. It still amounts to doing something 4x faster than most people. If you don’t have a sense of time then you can truly feel like you did ‘nothing’ bc you ‘forget’ that you just did 10 different things in the last hour. I see this as one version of Te playing out.

      Lol i know you posted this comment almost 2 yrs ago 😂 but i totally understand that (also ENTJ). I can get something done in a fraction of the time compared to others, albeit i take shortcuts and honestly probably should be more thorough at the task. However, because i have this underlying anxiety where if i have something i KNOW i need to have done even if i have a lot of time given to finish it, i MUST do it now as if i didn't. Often i just do something the moment it pops up on my "mental feed", regardless if i actually want to do it or not. But i find especially if it is something i don't want to do, i want to get it over with. I'm not sure why that is but i just feel a lot better having known i already got it all done early. Like in college i wasn't the smartest person however i seemed to always be the first to turn in my assignments-- especially ones that have a blueprint laid out for it like an essay prompt. Often my professors would look at me like did you even understand the assignment/do it right?, however i always got easy 90s and 100s. 🤷‍♀️ if we are still talking about conventional college though, i dropped out after a year simply because i found the routine boring and often limiting in ways (meaning, i didn't agree with how the professors wanted me to a certain task), and rather going into debt id rather go out and make that money now 😂 but apart from all of that, i still think im super lazy. I always feel like i could or should do more.

    Love these even more 'abstract' discussion of cognition lately!
    Pretty much same as a Ti dom, and assume there's some overlap with all T-types to some degree. I talked about this a bit on Joyce's INTJ-Ti vid. I noticed at a young age that I was looking for efficiency. As a kid, Chores seemed like such a waste (Maintenence of almost anything still does to me), and I received a lot of social feedback when I tried to push those lines. I somewhat think that this might be how a very young Tx-preference kid might differentiate Ti into Te (AKA their preference), in relation to Fi vs Fe. Plus I was always on the look-out (data gathering/Ne) for something I could use or apply to the pending task, AKA procrastination.
    That's also, more or less, why I know I'm an INTP rather than an INTJ. It's basically only the outside social pressure I feel/perceive that makes me motivated to actually perform or finish tasks, etc. Otherwise, I'd prefer to just stay in that wide-net and possibility ocean of temptation forever, given my own preferences. (And that's fairly unhealthy to always lament there, I think.)

    This is a fantastic explanation. I work from home and honestly work drastically fewer hours than the 40 I’m paid for, but thankfully my boss cares most about the job getting done rather than the hours I used to spend sitting in my cubicle passing time. This way I can do the job that some coworkers have spent more than 40 and still struggle to keep up. I’m good at prioritizing and am extremely efficient. One of my teenagers recently told me she was under the impression I only work 2 days a week lol. One of my teenagers recently told me she thoughtI only work 2 days a week lol. I have felt guilty and lazy at many times, and value consistent feedback from my boss so I can keep those doubts at bay. The doubts would never make me do more actual work, I’m just cramming 40 hrs worth of work into 20 so I need to do other things for a mental break. My in-office bosses never quite understood that. They needed to see a body there.

And actually I didn't sleep all day long, I just scheduled my time like: I come to dormitory and sleep immediately 7 hours then I wake up at 2 am and do whatever I want. And when online education was started my groupmates always struggled they used to spend 24/7 to hometasks, lessons. I always woke up at 3-4 am and completed my tasks till 9 am and did whatever I want all day long.

I type him INFP or ENFP, with INFP being more likely, simply because many people who knew him said he was a really calm, silent guy. We have more important things to do, as you tell it so well : "because it's not a priority right now."
    It's all or nothing for me.
    For example, Tuesday, I returned to my temporary work to do 4 things :
    take restaurant tickets, give something to a coworker, ask another coworker to give me the change I lent, talk to another coworker about a specific thing.
    I will not move somewhere to do or buy only one thing.
    Plan the most efficient way to do all the things, by spending less time and energy as possible.
    I will not : Day 1 do thing A, Day 2 do thing B, Day 3 do thing C
    I will : Day 4, do things A B C D, and rest the others days.

At work because I have it all planned out I get it done real fast and because I'm done with whatever I was doing for that week I think I'm lazy not doing more. The only problem is that I'm not going to start a project that I can't finish in the time frame I need. I'll wait until there is more time to start and finish that project. I've felt awful about not being good enough when really I'm doing everything fast. Also, if there is a deadline I don't usually wait for the last hour. I usually get whatever done ASAP so I can focus on what I want to focus on. Is that a difference for the ENTJ and the other types who dont have Te in the first slot?

    Te = convenient beliefs (what the majority of people think)
    Fi = personal values (not moral values)
    What's your describing as lazy is actually depression, where a person has difficulty caring about their own well being as a result of exhaustion. Laziness is actually just the "lack of care" to deal with things because you'd "rather focus on anything else".
    Te as a primary or secondary is all about convenience and is lazy in the sense that it ignores the reality of any particular subject (Ti facts) in favor of Fi. Which in turn is just a lack of care for any particular objectivity. Which is why Te focuses on the bare minimum.
    That's why they focus or what everyone else thinks, based on some level of authority, set around what common beliefs (teachers are popular opinions/misconceptions).
    Don't be mistaken:
    Fi (personally valuable) primary or secondary doesn't work the same. It's about being themselves in disregard for truth (Ti facts), in favor of social recognition because of Te.

    I encounter a sort of working class prejudice where achievement means suffering to get things done, as if it is a virtue. I prefer to organize and plan what I need to do beforehand with a sound method, so the work is effortless in the moment, and I can just go without much worry about it. As this means more mental load upfront, and making changes to a process before I start if I’ve learned it is not a very good one as it is, then I get accused of laziness because I’m not just “doing a task harder”, where saying it is inefficient is an “excuse not to work”. It reminds me a bit of Boxer from Animal Farm... but, would that would make me like Snowball? 🤔 Uh oh. 😅

      "Promiscuous readers?" Lol. Like, you really "get around" with all the books? 🙃 At first I thought you meant "prolific readers," but based on what you describe, "promiscuous" could actually fit, in a figurative sense.
      I actually always thought of starting a lot of endeavors at the same time and not finishing most of them as either an Ne or Se thing; Ne if it's chasing many disparate ideas, Se if it's bouncing around from one physical activity to another. So starting a lot of books and never finishing them sounds Ne to me. I always imagine types with strong Si or Ni actually finishing books, though Te/Fi types may flip to only the relevant part of the book they need and not read the rest. But maybe my impression is wrong.
      I think what you are describing could actually be a low Se phenomenon, insofar as the failure to actually get shit done and not actually acting on the impulse to pick up a book and read more when you have the urge, instead getting distracted by thoughts in your head. Or, if you are an INTJ, maybe it's an inferior Se "grip" behavior, kind of an unhealthy use of Se, being pulled in too many directions with no focus. Just throwing out ideas.

      I know you're not asking random passersby, but personally, he comes across as high Te to me in his public persona. I remember watching some of this stream of his, for example, about WoW's report system and how heavily it centered around this idea of him sternly showing people the evidence of it being messed up and experimenting with it in real time to prove his point too, and just hammering home the point while fielding objections to his claim in real-time. And the crux of it was basically all about how WoW wasn't telling the truth about how their report system works and how it didn't function in the way it was claimed to function. Could be a mix of Te effectiveness and Fi authenticity irritation going on there, along with the energy and improvisation of presentation, suggesting either Se or Ne as the driving function, with a shifting interplay between Te and Fi in the middle. So possibly ESFP or ENFP who leans into Te to navigate the "being intense and stern makes you the manliest of man" bro bro landscape of a video game like WoW. Idk if any of that read of it applies to who he actually is cognitively though; maybe just putting on a show in that kind of circumstance. It could also be interpreted as Ti wanting to set the record straight for the sake of it, I spose, though Ti generally doesn't seem to be both that intense and that demonstrative in doing such in real-time.

    Relying on gut feelings and vague descriptions of functions is not a reliable way to understand the functions. Relying on your emotions and your capacity to resonate with the material will only get you so far, but you won't be guaranteed to understand it fully. That's why, instead of unreliable emotions and gut feelings, it's better to follow the interpretation of Ausra Augusta which she saw the functions as aspects of reality! Not simply just letters. This is further confirmed by Dario Nardi research in neuroscience. Some types perceive the world differently because they focus on different brain regions and aspects of reality than others!
    Also, you can't rely on unfinished material since the conclusions will also risk to be false. The MBTY is as unfinished as you can get! We need to get deeper into things. Otherwise, it would be of no value to us to know about Te that's about efficiency, but without knowing how it works, and how we can take direct responsabilty of those inner mechanisms so that we can efficiently employ its use.
    The point of MBTY and Typology in general is to have a map. But not a blurred map that makes you to go in traps. No! The point of it is to have a detailed map so you won't have surprises and so you would be able to deal faster with the problems that may appear.
    You can't do this with a half done map! The half of it which is also covered in mud and disgusting errors and contradictions that make it useless.
    The point of typology should also be to find a way to became all personalities, aka reaching the transcendent function of which Jung talked. Not only on being limited by your worthless type. You have to recognize that an intuitive introvert only with Ni or Ti, it's worthless without his other pole. The strength of the function is given by the strength of the whole pair combined. As such, it means that we are really weak in reality and that we need to find a way to enhance this system so we can find a way to unlock this much needed ability.
    PS: You didn't responded to my last comments. At least you could have said that I'm wrong without giving any reasons. It would have worked too.
