"Supernaut" from Volume IV is a masterpiece. The very first time I played it (on the vinyl album) it was the most funky hard riff, with Bill on the high-hat....dude it is something special.
Its easy to loose perspective about Sabbath because so much Metal has been recorded by 2022, but NOBODY was doing this when they did. Pretty much ever 70’s Sabbath track inspired a different genre of Metal that exists today. They are the first, the seminal purveyors of Metal history, and they did it by adding a ton of volume to jazzy, bluesy, musicality. The rhythm section of Ward and Butler really swings and they were much more subtle and nuanced than people who just generalized their sound. You two are getting a great example of Sabbath today! 💫
You can't go wrong with anything from the first six Sabbath albums. Sabotage, the album this song is from, was their sixth album. Most heavy metal that appeared in the 80s and beyond is indebted to Sabbath.
The Master Tony Iommi creating another masterpiece. Everything heavy is based on what he did. Even James Hetlfield was inspired by listening to his older brother's Black Sabbath albums as a kid.
I would strongly suggest that the members of Deep Purple - especially Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore - created original music that helped create the Heavy Metal sound and much that followed has also been heavily influenced by what they did.

"Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is my favorite Sabbath song, followed by "National Acrobat", my second favorite Sabbath song. Great album. it doesn't get the respect it deserves. Iommi has said it was their best work.
A few other good rockers from the boys (Ozzy, Geezer, Tony, and Bill) are "Hole in the Sky" (Sabotage) "Killing Yourself to Live" (Sabbath Bloody Sabbath),.and "Children of the Grave" (Master of Reality).
Black Sabbath will be quite a rabbit hole - They even had Ian Gillan on vocals after Ozzy left....but for me personally, when Ronnie James Dio joined the group, the entire dynamics changed with the incredible album "Heaven and Hell" - Listen to the title track. It's soooo good !!!! - Don't get me wrong - I love Ozzy. As well as Black Sabbath I have all of Ozzy's solo albums. He is a legend and I love him dearly, but when it seemed Black Sabbath were coming to the end of the road - along came Dio and they hit the stratosphere ! What a comeback !!!!!! Great reaction to a brilliant track. Here's to many more !
People tend to fall into the Ozzy or Dio camp. I agree though, I like both versions. Heaven And Hell is a great album, the title track, Neon Knights, Children Of The Sea (always thought the start of it sounds a bit like Hotel California). In fact the first time I saw them was on the Mob Rules tour in 1982 at Hammersmith Odeon. I'd also seen Ozzy a few times previously, including the legendary Heavy Metal Holocaust in Port Vale in 1981 with Motorhead amongst others. Sabbath were originally supposed to play but pulled out. Cue lots of jokes about Sabbath from Ozzy, including they were now known as Geezer Butler and the four Italians (Vinnie Appice was Sabbath's drummer at the time. I was lucky enough to see Randy Rhoads with Ozzy twice in a matter of months. I also unfortunately saw Sabbath at Reading Festival in 1983 with Gillan. They were appalling, Gillan just wasn't right for them. They had the famous Stonehenge stage set which was the inspiration for that famous scene in Spinal Tap, albeit Sabbath's version wasn't quite so underwhelming. They even did an awful Sabbed up version of Smoke On The Water, Gillan even got his fucking bongos out at one point. Finally got to see them on the 13 tour with Ozzy a few years back. Wasn't expecting much but it was absolutely phenomenal. Bonus was it was in Birmingham as well, so being a honetown gig, there was a really celebratory atmosphere.

@@jimled50jl49 Yeah definitely a sad loss. He could shred with the best of them, but also had a subtlety to his playing. The Reading festival I mentioned had The Stranglers as the Friday headliners and Thin Lizzy on the sunday (their last show in the UK with Phil Lynott). Stevie Ray Vaughan was also there as well, buried in an afternoon slot. I was roo young to appreciate him at the time, and well, it was,nearly 40 years ago. It was quite an eclectic bill over the three days as well with the likes of Big Country, and Marillion as well. The only disappointment really was Steel Pulse (really good reggae band back in the day), getting bottled off without having the chance to play a note. Rock crowds could be a bit conservative and reactionary back in the day. Hands down though the best live performer I've ever seen is Prince (Hop Farm 2011). Absolutely stunning performance and I'm not a huge fan. Played for over 3 hours but it seemed to go by in a flash. The best guitarist I've ever seen (and I've seen few). Closely followed by Neil Young, seen him four times and he's,never been less than brilliant.

Black Sabbath, the Grandfather's of metal. Tony Iommi basically created most of the riffs that came later with other metal bands. So many songs in their catalog to explore.
Don't forget the other singers in the band either. Check out the song "The Sabbath Stones" with Tony Martin on Lead Vocals. Very underrated iteration of the band.
This my favourite Black Sabbath song off my favourite Black Sabbath album. When it came out I raced down to the record shop, came back and put it on and it blew me away. There is very little music. including Black Sabbaths that I can listen to after nearly 50yrs, but this is timeless. Glad you like it.

I realise that my opinion is shared by very few, but I don't care: Sabotage was the best Ozzy era Sabbath album. After the experimental approach of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the band realised that they needed a proper heavy metal record, and the result was stunning. The songs are progressive, the production is superb and Ozzy's voice is phenomenal--he never sang that well before, and he never sang as well ever again. I urge you to listen to the rest of the album, and find out for yourselves. \m/ \m/
Been a fan of Sabbath for most of my 55 years and this is my favourite song from my favourite album. Without Sabbath the band's you mentioned would not exist. Great reaction.
Buy the vinyl version of Sabotage. The cover is so trippy. Was my favorite Sabbath album and Symptom my fav song when I first discovered them in junior high back in the early 80’s.
Black Sabbath WITH Ozzy is astounding, at least up until this Sabotage album. But if we're going to explore hard rock I would URGENTLY recommend Hard Lovin' Man by Deep Purple. Cheers!

Awesome song, definitely one of my favourites from Sabbath. You really need to check out their self-titled song “Black Sabbath”. Probably the first Metal song ever, and so great! Other tracks I would suggest are “Children of the Grave”, “Snowblind”, or “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” but you really can’t go wrong with any song up to and including the Sabotage album. For their next era with Ronnie James Dio, check out “Children of the Sea” (or anything else from Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules). Thanks for the great video as always! 🤘🤘
Nick & Lex, this song is supposed to be what the 'thrash metal' genre is based on; a driving beat, with a repetitive guitar riff of Iommi's underlying Butler's great bass. However, Bill's drumming is incredible on this piece of music and the lyrics, supposedly about birth and the generations to continue, the emotion of birth and sadness of the creator are one of Geezer's greatest compositions. But what makes this song so unique is the outro and the superb acoustic guitar combined with what I think are Ozzy's best vocals because I can hear the emotion in his voice. Please explore more Black Sabbath....and Happy New Year to you both!
Dont forget the most important thrash metal element; a chunky palm muted riff followed by a big and long chords. Its amazing how Sabbath managed to created this song in 75. The only thing that hold this song from being recognized as thrash metal is the tone. The tone is not super distorted due to the limitation at the time, but when you hear the Sepultura cover, its clear that this song is thrash metal.

This was my first Sabbath LP at age 15 in 1975 so this is an excellent choice.. super heavy. The Sabotage album has numerous great tunes.. "Hole In the Sky", " Megalomania ", "The Writ", and "The Thrill of It All " are all worth checking out..

Tony Iommi is an amazing guitarist - the second half of this song is much like "It's Alright" off the "Technical Ecstacy" album. I think you're enjoy that as well! Tony is a left handed guitarist that started out as a right handed guitarist with Jethro Tull (pre record contracts) until an accident cut off part of his finger and he had to re-learn how to play as a lefty!
Actually, he has always been a lefty, and the problem was that the injury occurred on his fretting (right) hand, which is what made things so difficult for him. He had to learn to play through the pain and with homemade prosthetic fingertips. It was suggested to him at the time that he try to learn to play righty, but that was too hard at that point.
Sabbath is dark and awesome!! For the listeners if you haven’t heard the Sepultura cover of this tune, you really are missing out on some just solid guitar and drums. Crazy speed metal good. It’s on Nativity in Black. Probably the best collection. Of Sabbath covers or any band ever put together for that matter. Sabbra Cadabra next?
The Sepultura cover is the proof that this song is thrash metal. Sepultura didnt change the song that much, only the tone and production, and it clearly is thrash metal through and through.
It's amazing that this album didn't sell very well since it's just packed full of great music. Bill Ward suffered a heart attack while they were recording this album and the band had just discovered that they were flat broke.
Definitely think you should check out some Dio Era Sabbath as well. I would suggest: Heaven and Hell Mob Rules Children of the Sea Sign of the Southern Cross
The critics used to love to trash Black Sabbath. This is further proof that they rarely know what they're talking about, just their self-serving snobbery. It took me until after I graduated high school to get into the middle-later Sabbath, as obviously it wasn't as readily available (as now) if you weren't flush with cash. I didn't really have a music collection to speak of until I was in my mid 20's.
I thought about that for years . . . WHY? I think they didn't get the point of "Riffs", just straight chords instead of playing intricately (or 4-bar blues) carrying the rhythm or groove, and then when bands played intricately like soo many Progressive Rock bands, they hated that too :P. They were all stuck in the 1960's, especially Rolling Stone mag, they even trashed Zeppelin, its like they couldn't make-up their minds or just didn't want to be challenged. They needed "formula". Your story is pretty much mine as well, I was just starting my collection at about 19 in 1982.
That entire album is pure 🔥🔥,!!! All of those bands that you mentioned would POSITIVELY claim that BLACK SABBATH had a huge impact on them pursuing an instrument. Pioneers for sure!

The progression of this band from their debut through to the sixth release is staggering. They are a rabbit hole to dive into and their are acoustic tracks that will blow you away. Orchid, Laguna Sunrise will floor you. Wheels of Confusion is a progressive metal brain melter. So many tracks.
This classic was from their 1975 album Sabotage. This song is generally considered to be the birth of thrash. Iommi not only created great riffs, he created whole genres.
I played drums in a Sabbath/Ozzy tribute (ozzbest) and this was always one of the most fun songs to do. Bill Ward is hugely underrated as a drummer - hugely. Such a musical drummer too. 🤘 one of the nicest guys in rock too by all accounts

Wasn't until 1993 I was 18 years old and I bought all Ozzy era Black Sabbath albums on cassette, and sat and listened to them in order through headphones.... From the opening note of the self titled track on the first album I knew I was in for something different than the well known Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron man.... They were so far ahead of their time, people still ain't ready for them, and maybe never will be....
I am a Sabbath fan since 1971, when My dad bought me Master of reality. I was 11. I had heard Paranoid. Kept on about Sabbath, so got MOR for xmas. 63 now. When I pass away, my farewell song is Into the void.
This is a spectacular song. The beginnings of thrash metal, and then that soulful jazzy 2nd part, with Ozzy singing blues! It doesn't get better than this. Now Nick & Lex you simply must thoroughly explore Black Sabbath, starting with their first album. The song Black Sabbath, Warning/A Little Bit of Finger, The Wizard, and N.I.B.- but with N.i.B. you must hear it like it was on the album. The 4 songs Wasp, Behind the Wall, Basically and N.I.B. are all one long song and you must hear it in one sitting. Bon voyage! It's a helluva ride...

'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and 'Sabotage' are the apex of their 70's era. Ozzy's vocals were at their peak, Geezer's lyric were extremely potent with great bass-playing to boot, Bill Ward was going wild on the drums, and Iommi being an eternal god with guitar and songwriting. Check out "A National Acrobat".
"Wheels of Confusion" off their Vol. 4 album is a must.
And Supernaut and Cornucopia are bangers too.

A jazz pianist McCoy Tyner invented heavy metal. He played power chords on acoustic piano in the early 1950s.

I realise that my opinion is shared by very few, but I don't care: Sabotage was the best Ozzy era Sabbath album. After the experimental approach of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the band realised that they needed a proper heavy metal record, and the result was stunning. The songs are progressive, the production is superb and Ozzy's voice is phenomenal--he never sang that well before, and he never sang as well ever again. I urge you to listen to the rest of the album, and find out for yourselves. \m/ \m/

Been a fan of Sabbath for most of my 55 years and this is my favourite song from my favourite album. Without Sabbath the band's you mentioned would not exist.

Buy the vinyl version of Sabotage. The cover is so trippy. Was my favorite Sabbath album and Symptom my fav song when I first discovered them in junior high back in the early 80’s.

I've been a Black Sabbath fan since 1972, and they've been my favorite band for fifth years.
Black Sabbath WITH Ozzy is astounding, at least up until this Sabotage album. But if we're going to explore hard rock I would URGENTLY recommend Hard Lovin' Man by Deep Purple. Cheers!

Awesome song, definitely one of my favourites from Sabbath. You really need to check out their self-titled song “Black Sabbath”. Probably the first Metal song ever, and so great! Other tracks I would suggest are “Children of the Grave”, “Snowblind”, or “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath” but you really can’t go wrong with any song up to and including the Sabotage album.
For their next era with Ronnie James Dio, check out “Children of the Sea” (or anything else from Heaven and Hell or Mob Rules).

The Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage albums are the most proggy of their output, but the first 6 albums are amazing.
Nick & Lex, this song is supposed to be what the 'thrash metal' genre is based on; a driving beat, with a repetitive guitar riff of Iommi's underlying Butler's great bass. However, Bill's drumming is incredible on this piece of music and the lyrics, supposedly about birth and the generations to continue, the emotion of birth and sadness of the creator are one of Geezer's greatest compositions. But what makes this song so unique is the outro and the superb acoustic guitar combined with what I think are Ozzy's best vocals because I can hear the emotion in his voice. Please explore more Black Sabbath....and Happy New Year to you both!
Dont forget the most important thrash metal element; a chunky palm muted riff followed by a big and long chords. Its amazing how Sabbath managed to created this song in 75. The only thing that hold this song from being recognized as thrash metal is the tone. The tone is not super distorted due to the limitation at the time, but when you hear the Sepultura cover, its clear that this song is thrash metal.

This was my first Sabbath LP at age 15 in 1975 so this is an excellent choice.. super heavy. The Sabotage album has numerous great tunes.. "Hole In the Sky", " Megalomania ", "The Writ", and "The Thrill of It All " are all worth checking out..

The album is a Masterpiece, recorded just over a mile from where my father was born.
Tony Iommi is an amazing guitarist - the second half of this song is much like "It's Alright" off the "Technical Ecstacy" album.

Tony is a left handed guitarist that started out as a right handed guitarist with Jethro Tull (pre record contracts) until an accident cut off part of his finger and he had to re-learn how to play as a lefty!
Actually, he has always been a lefty, and the problem was that the injury occurred on his fretting (right) hand, which is what made things so difficult for him. He had to learn to play through the pain and with homemade prosthetic fingertips. It was suggested to him at the time that he try to learn to play righty, but that was too hard at that point.

This song reminds me of early 80s British heavy metal in some ways and perhaps this was the prototype, great pick!
Sabbath is dark and awesome!! For the listeners if you haven’t heard the Sepultura cover of this tune, you really are missing out on some just solid guitar and drums. Crazy speed metal good. It’s on Nativity in Black. Probably the best collection. Of Sabbath covers or any band ever put together for that matter. Sabbra Cadabra next?
The Sepultura cover is the proof that this song is thrash metal. Sepultura didnt change the song that much, only the tone and production, and it clearly is thrash metal through and through.
It's amazing that this album didn't sell very well since it's just packed full of great music. Bill Ward suffered a heart attack while they were recording this album and the band had just discovered that they were flat broke.

The critics used to love to trash Black Sabbath. This is further proof that they rarely know what they're talking about, just their self-serving snobbery. It took me until after I graduated high school to get into the middle-later Sabbath, as obviously it wasn't as readily available (as now) if you weren't flush with cash. I didn't really have a music collection to speak of until I was in my mid 20's.
I thought about that for years . . . WHY? I think they didn't get the point of "Riffs", just straight chords instead of playing intricately (or 4-bar blues) carrying the rhythm or groove, and then when bands played intricately like soo many Progressive Rock bands, they hated that too :P. They were all stuck in the 1960's, especially Rolling Stone mag, they even trashed Zeppelin, its like they couldn't make-up their minds or just didn't want to be challenged. They needed "formula".
Your story is pretty much mine as well, I was just starting my collection at about 19 in 1982.

The progression of this band from their debut through to the sixth release is staggering. They are a rabbit hole to dive into and their are acoustic tracks that will blow you away. Orchid, Laguna Sunrise will floor you.

I played drums in a Sabbath/Ozzy tribute (ozzbest) and this was always one of the most fun songs to do. Bill Ward is hugely underrated as a drummer - hugely. Such a musical drummer too. 🤘 one of the nicest guys in rock too by all accounts

I really great request! Although i do know a few of their hits! I have not really delved into their discography! I loved this song. The guitar riffs and the drumming were really was top notch. Wasn't until 1993 I was 18 years old and I bought all Ozzy era Black Sabbath albums on cassette, and sat and listened to them in order through headphones.... From the opening note of the self titled track on the first album I knew I was in for something different than the well known Paranoid, War Pigs and Iron man.... They were so far ahead of their time, people still ain't ready for them, and maybe never will be....
2 of my personal favourites are Killing Yourself To Live (1973) and Faeries Wear Boots (1970)

I am a Sabbath fan since 1971, when My dad bought me Master of reality. I was 11. I had heard Paranoid. Kept on about Sabbath, so got MOR for xmas. 63 now. When I pass away, my farewell song is Into the void.

This is a spectacular song. The beginnings of thrash metal, and then that soulful jazzy 2nd part, with Ozzy singing blues! It doesn't get better than this. Now Nick & Lex you simply must thoroughly explore Black Sabbath, starting with their first album. The song Black Sabbath, Warning/A Little Bit of Finger, The Wizard, and N.I.B.- but with N.i.B. you must hear it like it was on the album. The 4 songs Wasp, Behind the Wall, Basically and N.I.B. are all one long song and you must hear it in one sitting. Bon voyage! It's a helluva ride...

'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and 'Sabotage' are the apex of their 70's era. Ozzy's vocals were at their peak, Geezer's lyric were extremely potent with great bass-playing to boot, Bill Ward was going wild on the drums, and Iommi being an eternal god with guitar and songwriting. Check out "A National Acrobat".
