@@pacificmike9501 i have an 81 shovel 96" stroker that is running dual coil dual plug heads single fire and this same dynatek ignition. Im told you should retard the timing about 5 degrees with dual plugs. How do you set yours? Im not sure if i can just program that in, use the stock curve 4 which is 32 degrees or set the tdc mark forward in the timing hole? Thanks in advance for any input
Good video quality and sound. Mike is very knowledgeable as a result of all his years on the Harley Davidson. His explanation concerning the hemispherical combustion chamber is very good and easy to understand why they put 2 spark plugs in each cylinder. Thank you Mike for sharing your knowledge to people like me who has not owned a Harley but can appreciate them thru you!
Thanks for the videos! I recently inherited my dads old shovelhead and with a lot of help from your videos, I’ve now got her running and ready for the road.
Hello Mike. Thank u for xplain the electronic ignition. Once again it sounds easy when u talk about it👍. Looking forward to see more on the project bike👍. "The Swede"
Nice explanation about position of the sparkplugs, never thought much about it, and dual fire actually makes sense. I entered the world of electronic ignition on my 80" Shovel -79 this summer and I agree that I'm not totally crazy about the VOES, but it seems to work fine so far. But it was huge job to make space for it under the FatBob-tank, very, very tight. Thank you for another inspiring video.
Jeez, I love this hands-on material, and getting my hands dirty. Thanks Mike for helping me to understand more about what I am trying to do. You are the greatest1
Hey Mike good video tonight... While I was out on the road this evening about 8 or so miles from home. It started to spit a little rain. Lightning and thundering. Then the rain got a little heavier. More sky lightning. And then it started pouring so hard I had to stop. Thankfully i wasn't that far away from a gas station with a canopy over the pumps to seal some refuge . Well by the time i got home the only thing dry was a little spot on the top of my head under my helmet. Man it poured hard.. oh well that's how it goes..See you out on the road..lol.
Great video Mike,....i truly enjoy any content you put out for us...thank you for what you do sir. I can't wait to see the project bike come to fruition!.....it would be a great honor to ride with you!
Thanks for sharing! To quote Tom Petty..."The waiting is the hardest part" look forward to seeing the parts come in for the project bike. Stay healthy!!
I'm feeling your pain. I've got parts at various places for my build (a 1935 Studebaker Commander coupe) that I can't wait to get back so I can continue on. And I'm NOT getting any younger.
Hey Mike. Great Videos. Had a 79FLH with the original 79/80 electronic ignition. Ended up fitting a Crane hi4 single fire. Made a big difference to starting and general running. Love your videos, and enjoy watching those old sleds getting some old school care.
Interesting show. I'm running points and condenser on a 78 shovel. Nothing even close to your ignition but it works for me. I carry a extra condenser and points in the saddle bag. You probably already know this, but in the event someone doesn't. The points for a 1960's General Motors 6 cylinder 235 cubic inch engine work well in a Harley. You do have to do a little modification using a file on the points bracket. If you purchase new points and compare to the points you took out you will see what I mean. Thank you for another great video. Keep the rubber side down and have a great 4th.
You too. Thank you for your input. I carry a points plate and advance mechanism. But your input is much appreciated and I hope our viewers read what people like yourself send in.
That is a nice cool system you have. Learning all the time you have a video. Great stuff always. Thanks a bundle. Last time I heard dual plugs on a Shovel was 1977 and those guys were Bonneville bound. That bike was fast.
Hello my friend I am a fan of duel plug heads I used to have a Thruxton Bonneville with a four plug head as the triumph head is one piece so good for you my friend the more efficient and quicker the burn the better so take care my friend love duel plug heads regards Alan.
I've been playing with it for quite a while. It teaches me stuff. You can try tuning differently and get immediate results, make note, then make you changes, all of it quickly. Glad you enjoyed it.
Keith Parr, you can run electronic ignition on a Panhead too. Theres a plate that drops in the stock distributor. Hotter spark and consistent. I also have put an electronic regulator on the bike. The generator doesn't work as hard now. I still have the big Delco regulator on the bike for original look. I made a plate to mount the electronic regulator under the bike. Been on there for about eleven years now.
As usual, well done 👍🏽. My mechanic called and said my baby isn’t getting fuel ⛽️. Can’t wait for the project bike 🏍 and I can’t believe 2 people gave you a thumbs down 👎🏽, now that really blows my mind.
Thanks Mike, I still have my plastic plug run it up to 2000 rpm and have my buddy move the points plate while I held the timing light. If I was in the hills a lot I would put the mark just a tad towards the front, good times 😎
Just had a Vulcan unit fail...I happened to have the points set up that came with the bike...fired right up. Going to run that for awhile till I remember why I switched them out in the first place lol
Another educational video!! I love the ol' Shovelheads... Always have, ever since my first one (76' fxe in 2004, 79' flh custom in 2006 and a 79' fxe in 2014.. that was also my first street bike wreck). Listening to you talk about This shovelhead is overwhelmingly exciting! I know that sounds weird and kind of goofy but, I just really loved both my shovelheads. I say both as in two, because the 79 FLH Was a basket case,, I had to sell it after my motorcycle wreck to pay for medical bills. . . Anyways... I really really appreciate your knowledge and the content of your videos. 🇺🇸😎👍
I have run a Dyna single fire dual plug set up on a 90 inch shovel stroker with a five speed and a 22/40 tooth final drive. The bike would get almost 50 mpg on the highway with a Super B. I think I was just barely off the idle circuit at 80 mph. A single fire set up just has a very distinct sound to it but that was 30 years ago though.
Hi Mike , You have entertained me [ and many many others ] , so , if you have the Time , a little True Tale . I also Twin Plugged my Harley in the late'80's , fast forward to about '94ish , Standing outside my Local H.D. Dealers , and a New Harely Rider was looking over my Motorcycle , and of course noticed the Twin Plug Heads . He asked me why , and I explained that Harely had to conform more and more to noise and emmisions Reg's , and , Hondas Flagship , Expensive NR750 with oval Pistons had not really caught on , and Honda had been left with shelves full of Oval Pistons , H.D. had done a deal , and I was on the Experimental Motorcycle , with Honda oval Pistons and needed two Spark Plugs . Funnier if you had been there , with my Buddies listening , and trying to keep staright faces . Hope I have not bored you too tears .
I always trie to educate my customers enough to keep them from embarrasing themselves. You're a bad kid. You're just picking on this guy. I hope he gets even. You get to pick on him, but then, you gotta give him his turn.
Putting in a Dyna S on my 72' XLCH and I'm at the "static timing" portion. Instructions does call for the front cylinder to be on its compression stroke. I put my "line" at the center of the inspection hole. Not the "dots". When watching your video you mentioned that the line was the rear cylinder. I was about to change it, but checked my old HD service manual titled: "Sportsters 1970 to 1978", first. There's a figure 5-19 showing the line in the middle. The description reads: Advance timing mark on flywheel for front cylinder piston 1971 and later. 40 degree BTC. Can you help me understand? I've owned this bike since 1984 and it was always a 2 kick start ......until I had the motor rebuilt. Now it's not reliable. With a kick start, that's not too good for this 62 year old vet. Hoping that going electronic is the way back to her former glory.
The line is where the front cylinder should fire at full advance. Position it in the window. Remember to be sure your front cylinder is on its compression stroke. That's with the front piston coming up and both front valves closed.
I am rideing an 83 so it is titled shovel it is a built bike aftermarket frame delcron cases I have no idea what is in side but runs as good as my old twin crap but with a lot more fun right now it is running on points and I kinda like it that way I have had an electronic on an evo go out and I was stuck but points I can work on I have had to do it on a 74 fxe I use to ride but to the point if I changed to an electronic with a single plug would it make much difference in the way it runs I think the insides are basically stock and when the bike was built the builder used some very nice parts I think he built it to ride
Sounds good to me. I had an electronic ignition burn out on me in Pueblo Colorado on a Sunday morning. Poor me. I opened my tool bag ansked everyone to leave me alone for about fifteen minutes. When they came back, I had installed the points plate and advance mechanism I had in my tool bag. I fired it up and we road home to Southern California.
Two of my friend with shovelheads that switched to electronic ignition had a fit kick starting them after they did. One bike is stoked one wasn't. both are 1977's have you seen that yourself. I still have points in my 72 FLH and it starts very easy with the kicker.
The problem is, being able to retard far enough to start easily, then being able to advance far enough to run well. There needs to be broad enough adjustment. An electric starter is much more forgiving. If a unit is programmable enough to give you enough timing choices, it's fine for kick starting.
@@pacificmike9501 My one friend had a bum battery and the only way to start his 77 was push it. I got to say nether guy has the maintenance habits I have. Thanks
Great Topic , as I am just about to pull heads for weeping head gaskets and ignition up grade. On 81 shovel . ( currently points) If you were you , would you dual plug heads? Cheers! Just shoot me a thumb up or down . I bought bike new, Love It
Hey there Mike, I’m wondering what your opinion is on the Crane Fireball HI-4E external programable ignition modules? I recently had my duel plug S&S Shovelhead stroker motor rebuilt and the guy who did the rebuild for me was pretty adamant on my replacing this ignition with one of the Twin Tech ignitions for inside the cone. What do you think is best for me to be running for optimum performance? Thank you for time.
Every mechanic has his favorites and usually, for good reason. Then he gets familiar with dealing with it and face it, you're going to like what you know how to deal with. On my Shovelhead, I use the Dynatek 2000I PC. I don't recommend brands.
@@pacificmike9501 When finally built my Shovel about 20 years ago, I first went with the Crane Hi-4, which burned out in about 2 years. Then back to points, Which reminded me of why I was excited when electronic ignitions came out. Then I went with the Dyna, and no issues since. Keep it simple, at least for me!
Thanks for this! I’m installing one right now on my 97” dual plugged kick only shovel. I got the switches set up as 1 - down 2 - up 3 - down 4 - up 5 - down 6 - up Does this look right? I don’t have the option programming kit. Thanks
Mike I just.brought a 74 FLH, it is not.running, it has an oil.cooler mounted with a front spin on oiler filter What weight engine oil should I use and what brand, also for the transmission. Thank you Sir.
Use a good modern oil. The service manual will recommend (depending on your weather) 50 wt. Harley oil. Nowdays, I run 20/50, but don't recommend brands. Transmission? A name brand motorcycle gear lube (generally, 85/140). Invest in a genuine Harley service manual. Oh yah! Congratulations!
I can't find the kit- Part# 53-646 to program the ignition anywhere. I have been running these ignitions for years in customers bikes, but they were all electric start. I need the kit to program for a kicker. Got any leads?
Hey Mike, I note you time the ignition on the TDC mark. I run points and time the ignition using the advance mark, which is what most people I know recommend. Are we getting it wrong?
You do it according to the manufacturer. Time the points according to the advance mark with the ignition at full advance. This system is set at TDC and the "brain" in there automatically advances to where it is programmed. You're not wrong.
Mike my 2005 dyna was stolen last week and recovered.the thief installed defeat switch to start it without key, and using a separate rocker swing for starting. Can y tell me what make so I can remove it. Thanks
Hello Mike, I am tuning my freshly rebuilt 1975 shovelhead. The engine is stock but has a Dyna electronic ignition. My question is do I need to adjust the spark plug gaps based on now running an electronic ignition versus the previous points system. For some reason I am thinking that the spark is hotter now that I have an electronic ignition so therefore my question regarding the spark plug gap. Thanks in advance.
Hi Mike - I am back at just about 1 year! Working on my other 1975 FXE Super Glide. This one has points. Annual maintenance for circuit breaker assembly and I seem to have run out of adjustment room in the slots of the circuit breaker adjustment plate. These are new points. When I adjusted the previous set, I was very close to or at the limit of adjustment in the slots. Wisdom gleaned from googling suggests lengthening the slots. Seems odd that I'd reach this limit, though. Is this something you have seen or run into? thanks
Thank you. I can check that. I've been riding the bike for 3 years or so and have never had the cam cover off. The bike has always run extremely well. If the cam were off a tooth wouldn't that have showed up in the bikes performance? Or can it be one tooth off and still run right without damaging the valve train? Again my inexperience hence my question
I have a question that's been stumping mechanics around here. I inherited a 92 dyna from my brother. When I got it front cylinder not firing. Replaced ignition timing module by the cam and the coil and plugs. After that now the front one fires but the rear one not firing now. I'm lost lol. Love your videos you are a wealth of knowledge. Thank you
Sounds kinda simple, but, have you checked out the plug wires themselves? Have you tried a different ignition main module? You know, if when it was apart, could you have switched the plug wires? There's something very simple going on here. Those plug wires could be almost thirty years old, you know. When the module goes bad, not just the pickup module, but the main ignition module, they do all sorts of strange things.
@@pacificmike9501 thank you for the quick response. I've been trying to look up how to check the main module. I can't find anything. Bikes are kinda new to me. So I'm learning on the fly here. Lol. Thank you.
It's difficult to properly check out. Before there were so many different ones, I used to keep one on the shelf for testing purposes. I could simply change it. Trial and error gets expensive. I get it.
It will be worth the cost if that's what it is to resurrect my brothers bike. Thank you very much for the super quick responses. Keep making them great videos. Have great day sir
Mike, I like to revisit your videos to get more insight. I am late to the party again. I did an upper rebuild on my 83 shovel. I had points but converted to electronics. The bikes runs good. Good fuel mileage. 175 degrees with an added oil cooler. I kept the engine stock. I have a super e carb on it. My question. When I check the plugs after a ride, they're darken and not that tan color. Not oily. Probably running rich. No dark smoke out of the exhaust. I tried the lean mixture adjustment on the carb, but it's not improving the look on the plugs. Someone mentioned that it's ok to run it a little rich so the engine runs cooler. Thoughts?? thanks.
I like to run a little rich. There are folks out there that run right up to the edge of too lean, and they run too warm. A little rich is okay. You could try a slightly leaner low speed jet and see how it runs. Again, a little rich does tend to run a little cooler.
Hello Mike. I have a 75 super glide shovel head, stock motor. Dyna S electronic ignition. I'm stumped, how do I connect the wires to statically time it. I am using a voltmeter. I know I ground one wire but where do I connect the hot wire, so to speak. I know how to do this with a points system. But for the life of me can't figure out where to connect things with this Dyna S. Thank you in advance
Hello Mike, my 77 shovel Electric Glide, when inspecting the circuit breaker and advance timming shaft, and fly weight system. When examining, it seems the fly weights are rubbing against the timming plate. Could this rubbing cause slow advance spark? What do you suggest, I should do.
Nope, just a toggle switch. It really helps when doing road tests under a load. I simply configure one curve to be retarded a little to see how it does.
Very interesting video Mike. Even though English is not my mother language easy to understand. Is there any information which advance curve (Ultima 53-644) is best for a 1988-883 Sportster? Would love to see a video about choosing advance curves. Sincere thanks.
It's really something you need to experiment with for yourself on your machine. The Dynatek ignition I use on my Shovelhead is configured to that motor with me riding it. That's the purpose of the adjustments. Normally, when there are curves available to you, you start with the most aggressive and then go to the next milder if the first one detonates.
I installed a new electronic ignition I’ve turned the ignition counter clockwise n the light hasn’t come on does the front piston have to be up position for the light to even come on n the key was on Ive never timed one before could you give me any pointers please
Front piston in the up position with both intake and exhaust valves closed (this is no. 1 piston on the compression stroke). Timong mark showing in the window. Consult your service manual. That's a nice way of saying you should have a genuine, model and year specific, Harley Davidson Service Manual.
Interesting but I will stick with points and the old advance weights in my 72 FLH. They are the same as a 6 cylinder Chevy 59 to 74. I can buy them anyplace.
It took me forever to try electronic ignition, then it took the people who make them forever to make them last. Then, they really got good. I run points in my old bikes and I guess I must be old , because I think of a Shovelhead Cone motor as being "modern." I never liked the cone motor advance system, although I've really studied how to manipulate it for my purposes. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I understand the attachment.
@@pacificmike9501 I liked the distributer cap on top of the motor like my Flatheads and Panheads had and the early Shovelheads. I have never owned an early Shovelhead my 72 FLH is my only Shovel. I had four Flatheads and two pans. The bikes I wish i had never sold was my 1933 HD my 48 Indian and my 1951 61ci Panhead. I had them in the 70's and early 80s and they were around then so you don't think about not being able to afford one again even as a basket case.
Hi Mike, can you tell me who made your dual coil mount? I have looked & Looked online & can't fine the one you have. I like it better because it does not stick out like the V-twin ones, instead of coil positioned up & down they are sideways.
I honestly don't remember. I think it came from Rivera Engineering. But, they are no longer active. Try calling Dynotech. The bracket was made to hold their coils.
@@pacificmike9501 I like yourself have been running dual plugs on my shovel for over 30 years. I run a Dyna Dc6-4 coil it’s so much easier than 2 coils and uses stock bracket. Also looks better IMO. Have you tried one of those? www.ebay.com/p/171128055
great idea thinking about upgrading my 1995 Harley Davidson Electra glide classic I have a Crane FireBall HI - 4E Motorcycle Ignition module and I have the VOES switch and I'm running a CV Carburetor on the bike she is running great but I have had the ignition module for a number of years. and it is probably due for an upgrade after seeing your video I'm thinking about doing the same thing. any advice or changes you could recommend would be much appreciated thank you for all of your videos always look forward to watching with my wife and our dog as well.
Mike.....I had as least two pop up add for medicare supplements. (are they trying to tell Shovel head viewers something?) The older I get the more I'm into reliability. I've ran points, electronic, and Morris mags on Shovels. (kick start,SU carb) Fact is, points always started the best of the three. (it's been said that if it isn't a good starter it ain't worth a "F")We know timing is everything and the factory FX cam also seemed to outperform even Sifton cams (starting)for me. I've ran Dyna (I like them) but a guy had better carry spare parts. Nothing wrong with points and a well cared for mechanical advance.....I like to play also!...thanks for the vid!....walt...tulsa,ok
Veery Eenteresting. I do hope you're old enough for the humor. I honestly, don't know what to say. I do know that now I'm going to take my computer in for its maintenance. I pay in advance for this periodic routine. I just wish they wouldn't speak to me. They do a good job. They keep my computer working. I haven't a clue what they're talking about. Then I will stop by for my yearly blood test. I don't know what the results will mean. I know I'm fine. They'll talk over my head again. I understand my motorcycle.
I don't figure on mileage. I love lumpy bumpy cams. I do run taller than stock gearing. The dual plugs and electronic ignition really do create smoothness and easy starting.
@@pacificmike9501 Thank you for your reply. I've got a '77 Shovelhead lowrider. It may be difficult to kick start it and get 2 or 3 revolutions. Can you recommend an electronic ignition system that can do both kick start and electric start. Thank you.
The housing does not hold oil well. It is designed as a circulating system and I choose to keep it that way. Pouring a lot of oil in there makes a mess. It won't stay. Pouring a little oil in there and it won't oil properly (or stay). The clutch is designed to run dry. The list goes on.
Hey Mike thanks so much for another great video... I always enjoy tuning in.. So listen I've got a question for you & I apologize if this topic has possibly bin covered in an earlier video. I'm guessing that I've watched about 75% of your content & scanned thru but I may have I may missed it.. It's about your heads & exhaust on this beauty Shovelhead.. You get a good look at about 5:34 in the video. I really like the way your set up with the four bolts instead of a single one.. Is this something you machined up yourself of is available for purchase to public kind of thing? Maybe Exhaust options with there pro's & con's of design etc could be a topic suggestion for a video in the future... Anyway if you have a minute to reply would be much appreciated.. Take care of yourself Mike.. Cheers from Dave in Canada..
Dave, those are STD heads. They are very high performance and a real pleasure. To my knowledge they are not available at this time. They were produced with three bolt exhaust ports. I love that feature. Of course, you have to fab your own pipes. I think Paughco produced some drag pipes for them. They also came with dual spark plugs. Neat stuff. Cheers to you.
Thanks for the reply @@pacificmike9501.. I guess I should've known that. I considered myself pretty lucky just to get my hands on a new set of drag pipes last summer.. Have a good one Mike..

Old spyke had 4 So any advice would be greatly appreciated what wires go wear new module red, white, green, blue, purple white and red to hot? Blue front cylinder? Green rear cylinder? Purple ignition? Scratching head ! Thank u like your videos I to am rehabilitating from my crash back in April
Your 81 started out with an electronic ignition, which probably died. The least expensive way to go was to install a points system. So now you would like to install an electronic system. All of the major suppliers carry complete systems. The ones I generally use are Dynatek. They all come with complete instructions.
Top stuff as usual , I've read and watched loads of content about setting 1340 evo ignition timing , any chance of knowing your take or methods of setting up on these motors dynamic or static methods ? Lovin the videos 🙏.
Thank You. Using a stock electronic ignition in them, it's by guess or by golly. I'm a little better than that. It's trial and error. Using programmable ignitions and setting according to the manufacturer is better by far.
Thanks for the video Mike. It cleared up a couple of things for me. One question I have (maybe a dumb one at that), how and what bracket did you use to mount both coils?
Hi Mike, I hope this message finds you well and happy. I wondered if you notice this comment. If I could pick your brain. I installed a Dyna 2000i ignition and followed the instructions. I got to the point where I am finding TDC and then adjusting the unit itself to get the red light to turn off. However I find TDC and the light is already off. It only appears to come on during the exhaust stroke. And is dead during the compression stroke. Very odd, as I've spun and spun the engine incase I was 180 off or similar. Any advice on trouble shooting Pal? Many Thanks Bill
@@pacificmike9501 Hi Mike, Thanks for your reply. No I am not using advance weights. I took them out and ran the later gold timing cup. Then 2000i the ignition module over that. Someone said to me today that a worn pinion gear key can cause the issue I am experiencing, I don't understand how but I might swap in a new one anyhow.
@@pacificmike9501 Hi Mike, Thanks for the advice, as always you pointed me in the right direction. I contacted Dynatek and explained the problem and the guy on the phone who was very likeable let me know " Issues like this point to the cams 99% of the time but seeing as the bike was running ahead of the swap. The other 1% of the time is the dummy who fitted it 🤣🤣". He asked me to take it out and reinstall one more time. I reluctantly did as he asked and Bingo. The red light came on when she should and the bike is running nicely now. Thanks for the advice and all your videos. Huge Fan

Mike, I see you have a kicker on your shovel. Does the Dyna work well with kick start. I was thinking about installing one on my '81 with single fire coil. What do you think. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.
Thank you. Dyna makes their programmable ignition so that you may control it to do whatever you want. How much rotation of the engine before firing is part of it. It really does it for you.
Mine is a manual switch I installed. Normally, you would use a VOES. That is, "vacuum operated electronic switch." I don't know your bike. Evos came with them. Shovelheads did not.

Thank You. More to come.
The ultima ignition is basically the same as Dyna just rebranded under a different name, really good ignition system
That's good info. I'll have to check it out.
Had to watch this one again since you just posted a new video to show the custom programing feature. Good stuff.
Thank You
Nice explanation about position of the sparkplugs, never thought much about it, and dual fire actually makes sense. I entered the world of electronic ignition on my 80" Shovel -79 this summer and I agree that I'm not totally crazy about the VOES, but it seems to work fine so far. But it was huge job to make space for it under the FatBob-tank, very, very tight. Thank you for another inspiring video.
Thank You. Glad you liked it.
Jeez, I love this hands-on material, and getting my hands dirty. Thanks Mike for helping me to understand more about what I am trying to do. You are the greatest1
Glad to help!

Love hanging out in your garage have a blessed week my friend.
Thank You. And, you too.
I'll see you there, but let's wish for a clear day.
👍🙂
Great video Mike,....i truly enjoy any content you put out for us...thank you for what you do sir. I can't wait to see the project bike come to fruition!.....it would be a great honor to ride with you!

Hey Mike. Great Videos. Had a 79FLH with the original 79/80 electronic ignition. Ended up fitting a Crane hi4 single fire. Made a big difference to starting and general running. Love your videos, and enjoy watching those old sleds getting some old school care.

Always great content !
Thank You.
Mine is a 77, but we didn't dual plug it until the early, early eighties.

I've been playing with it for quite a while. It teaches me stuff. You can try tuning differently and get immediate results, make note, then make you changes, all of it quickly. Glad you enjoyed it.
I didn’t know you could do new tech on the old Shovel! Super cool 😎
Shovels aren't that old.

Great stuff brother Mike.

Thank You. That's very rewarding to me.
Sounds great!
Great information, but no more 100 mph wrecks !

Wow Mike that’s the most tech on an old bike I’ve seen...cool
That's what happens when you buy one new and keep it forever, and use it as your "test bench."
My brand I use in my 98 Fatboy except mine is under the seat and replaces the ignition module has a basic hole switch in the cone
Yep. Good stuff.
Thanks

Cool.
Great Video!! I'm running the original Dyna S system with the mechanical advance. Love it!!!!
I ran one for years and loved it. I went to this system because it came out and I had to try it. Again, this bike was my test bench for years.
Thanks for another good one Mike. How about an Alternator / Generator charging system test ,?
Stay safe.
Those are several different tests. We'll do them as they come up. Thank You.

Mike I just.brought a 74 FLH, it is not.running, it has an oil.cooler mounted with a front spin on oiler filter
What weight engine oil should I use and what brand, also for the transmission.
Thank you Sir.
You are most welcome.
I can't find the kit- Part# 53-646 to program the ignition anywhere. I have been running these ignitions for years in customers bikes, but they were all electric start. I need the kit to program for a kicker. Got any leads?
Sure, call the factory. Look them up online and call their phone number.
@@pacificmike9501 Understood, yes I use the little cam locking tool - thanks Mike

Sorry. That is something I have not experienced. But, I'm glad you got your bike back.
I believe the Dynatech calls for .040 in their instructions. When running single plugs with the Dyna, I run .040.
Thank you Mike!
Is this something you have seen or run into? thanks
It uisually means something else is not right. Maybe the cam is off a tooth?
Hard to say.
@@pacificmike9501 feedback always appreciated. Let the forensics begin!!
Price things out carefully. You may find an aftermarket ignition system for less money. Sorry I can't recommend brands.
Great video Mike
Thank You.
Hi Mike. About the custom toggle switch. Does the switch just connect the VOES wire to ground, to get the advance curve you want?
Yes.
Follow the Dyna Directions. The little light lights up.
Hello Mike, my
77 shovel Electric Glide, when inspecting the circuit breaker and advance timming shaft, and fly weight system. When examining, it seems the fly weights are rubbing against the timming plate. Could this rubbing cause slow advance spark? What do you suggest, I should do.
Always have nice parts (not badly worn) for your advance mechanism. Pop for a new set and be sure the weights and pins are lubed with antisieze.
@pacificmike9501 thank you Mike for your advice 👍
Is there a voes on this bike or just the toggle switch that selects one of two advance curves? Thanks.
Then I will stop by for my yearly blood test. I don't know what the results will mean. I know I'm fine. They'll talk over my head again. I understand my motorcycle.
Does the dual plug + electric ignition improve fuel efficiency at all?
As in, do you get a cleaner, more accurate burn which requires less fuel?
I don't figure on mileage. I love lumpy bumpy cams. I do run taller than stock gearing. The dual plugs and electronic ignition really do create smoothness and easy starting.
Outstanding information.

What does this electronic ignition system effect with the kick starter, if the dead revs are set to "0" zero?
You may be fighting it when you kick it. Try two or even 3.
@@pacificmike9501 Thank you for your reply. I've got a '77 Shovelhead lowrider. It may be difficult to kick start it and get 2 or 3 revolutions.
Can you recommend an electronic ignition system that can do both kick start and electric start. Thank you.
The one on my Shovelhead is a Dyna 2000i computerized. I program it on my computer. It's capable of just about anything.
Hey Mike on a 76 superglide is it best to divorce the primary from oil system or leave it factory? Thanks!
The housing does not hold oil well. It is designed as a circulating system and I choose to keep it that way. Pouring a lot of oil in there makes a mess. It won't stay. Pouring a little oil in there and it won't oil properly (or stay). The clutch is designed to run dry. The list goes on.

I'm guessing that I've watched about 75% of your content & scanned thru but I may have I may missed it.. It's about your heads & exhaust on this beauty Shovelhead.. You get a good look at about 5:34 in the video. I really like the way your set up with the four bolts instead of a single one..
Yah, it was difficult at first.
You have any ideas on what I'll need to convert my 81 fxe from points to this? Links parts etc.
Your 81 started out with an electronic ignition, which probably died. The least expensive way to go was to install a points system. So now you would like to install an electronic system. All of the major suppliers carry complete systems. The ones I generally use are Dynatek. They all come with complete instructions.

I used Dynatek brackets for their coils.
I just realised I never informed you of any bike details. It is a 1981 FXWG 1340 shovelhead. running dual coil, dual plug set up, single fire set up.
I'm afraid I'd have to see it. Are you using advance weights and if so, are you advancing the ignition rotor and setting for the unit advanced?
@@pacificmike9501 Hi Mike, Thanks for your reply. No I am not using advance weights. I took them out and ran the later gold timing cup. Then 2000i the ignition module over that. Someone said to me today that a worn pinion gear key can cause the issue I am experiencing, I don't understand how but I might swap in a new one anyhow.
If it's that far off and your gears are timed correctly, call Dynatek and ask for their techline. They are quite helpful. Please, let me know.
Huge Fan
Hi from France, i have a 1977 shovelhead with double spark plugs cylender heads and s&s super e carb, which are the best sparks for my motorcycle?
Thank you
I don't recommend brands.
@@pacificmike9501 ok thanks, great videos 👍
Mike, I see you have a kicker on your shovel. Does the Dyna work well with kick start. I was thinking about installing one on my '81 with single fire coil. What do you think. Thanks in advance for your wisdom.
Thank you. Dyna makes their programmable ignition so that you may control it to do whatever you want. How much rotation of the engine before firing is part of it. It really does it for you.
@@pacificmike9501 Thanks Mike
How does it know when to switch to wide open throttle mode?
Mine is a manual switch I installed. Normally, you would use a VOES. That is, "vacuum operated electronic switch." I don't know your bike. Evos came with them. Shovelheads did not.
