  • In this video I show records I bought at 2 record shows. These record shows were in Carthage, Missouri and Des Moines, Iowa. I had better luck than I thought I would! I love these records I added to my growing vinyl collection!
If you dig punk, I picked up a lot of that, as well as some power pop, post-punk, and indie/alternative!
I'm Hanna, and thanks for watching! Like my video? Please subscribe and give me a thumbs up!

    Re: Sad Lovers and Giants.
Very cool band if you like the echoey chimey guitar sound. I would compare them to the Bunnymen but more new wave, less post punk. Some might call the vocals wimpy. The singer has a high pitched voice so may not be for everyone. They're not the most masculine band in the world LOL. They were on a cool UK label called Midnight Music. Awesome graphics on the album sleeves. Another Midnight Music group you must hear especially if you love the Cure is THE ESSENCE. This is late 80s early 90s. They were Dutch. You could say they were a Cure clone BUT they wrote great songs. Some bands steal a sound but have little to no good material. If you love the Cure and want to hear the best album the Cure never made, you must hear PURITY by THE ESSENCE originally released on Midnight Music, later reissued by Anagram records. Chimey guitars, dark n gothy yet poppy, atmospheric, melancholy gloomy etc etc. A masterpiece of 80s goodness!

Hey again, Chris! I'll have to check out The Essence for sure. If they are similar to the Cure, then I'm all in! I have some sampling to do! Appreciate the comments, my friend!

Fantastic grabs!!! The Gits score - I must say, WOW! It’s always cool to see a record you’ve been looking for and for whatever reason the seller has under valued its worth. I’m happy for you. I also agree with your stance on Fad Gadget’s material. This video has been a great ride. Enjoy your day 😎

Nice to see Squeeze mentioned..One of my top 5 bands ever. Their first album was in fact produced by John Cale but he just didn't get what they were all about so the album is a bit of a mess..Their second album Cool for Cats is very good and I am glad you found it. Their third album Argybargy is even better but their 4th album East Side Story (produced by Elvis Costello) is a true masterpiece. It contains songs that I think Lennon/MacCartney would have killed to have written. Hanna, check it out, you will not be disappointed

I appreciate your analogy on theses Squeeze albums. Yes, the contrasting styles between Argybargy and East Side Story are clearly evident. East Side Story is a diverse collection of songs but I would give Argybargy the nod. Love them both.

Nice finds! "The Tenement Year" is a good one, but the real accessible Pere Ubu album is "Cloudland," from 1989, which is highly recommended. It has genuinely fun, catchy tracks, but they all make sense in the Ubu universe. Only a curmudgeon would call it a sellout. And of course it didn't really sell. But it actually got some MTV and modern rock radio attention back in the day, hard to fathom for the usually too-weird-for-the-masses Ubu.

That Dead can Dance album is also a favourite, and Fad Gadget are absolutely brilliant, Ricky's Hand being one of my favourite tracks. Hannah, I love the fact that you have Scared To Dance by The Skids on your wall. Terrific album by a top notch post-punk band from Scotland. And to my ears, it's also one of the best hard rock albums of the 70s. Their lead guitarist doesn't get enough love as one of the best of his era. He did get some positive attention with Big Country for the "bagpipe" drone that defined their guitar sound. More people need to hear that Skids album.

Heartbreakers is really good punk and I like earlier Misfits too.
Had no idea that Frank Tovey was actually Fad Gadget. I forgot all about them and cannot recall what they sound like.
Siouxsie "Peepshow" - I've got that in my wishlist (in my head). What's the sound quality if you've gotten to listen to it yet? I'd read some reviews complaining about the quality.

Amazing how your record hunts are also an eye and new avenue opener for me, as a collector of mostly indie pop and rock (also postrock, punk pre and post...hard core.....shoegaze....etc) for more than 30 years.
Just when I thought I had exhausted all my options, new ones pop up. Music is so amazingly divers and abundant; and hidden sometimes. I only collect cd's though or never got into vinyl. As much as I see overlooked bands and titles in your collection, I have not seen stuff that might also be of interest to you. For instance the 'jangle pop' and indie and punk-like rock (also lo-fi and shoe-gaze; and much post-punk inspired) from a New Zealand (80s-90s) scene generally but perhaps incorrectly called "Dunedin". Bands include the Chills, the Clean, Toy Love, Able Tasmans, The Verlaines, Look blue go purple, Jean-Paul Sartre Experience, Tall Dwarfs, 3Ds, Garageland, Straightjacket Fits, This kind of punishment and the Bats. Also bands that are known from the 'famous' Flying Nun label.
If you havn't heard any of them before, the genre to my mind is fabulous, unique and highly collectable; often with reissues to substitute expensive originals.
And there is a whole lot more to the more obscure 1990s movement of indie pop and rock. Based on more well known bands like Sonic Youth, Slint, Smog, Polvo, Unwound, Ween, Fugazi, Pavement, Eric's Trip.....the list goes on and on. Also many many bands that were underrated at the time but now more appreciated or 'forgotten'. But I have already seen you or talk about many bands from that era I particularly like as well.
Thanks for sharing all that ear candy with us and keep m' coming! I also realise I will never be able to stop collecting with all the hints people like you provide; an expensive and space filling hobby 🙂

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Hi Hanna, indeed I saw your shoegaze vid. Among my favorites in this genre are My Bloody Valentine, Swervedriver, Swirlies, Bailter Space (New Zealand), Band of Susans and Drop Nineteens. With respect to going on collecting, shelving space is becoming a limitation :-)
I will look at your others vids for more tips. Just bought a cd of The Only Ones as a band I was unfamiliar with and like. I saw you also like the Soft Boys and Robin Hitchcock, a long time favorite of mine. I saw a Robin perform at a lo-fi festival (Fast Forward) in the mid-1990s. Great stuff! ua-cam.com/video/inC7NOqoW5Y/v-deo.html Where by the way I believe a 'neighbor' of yours also performed: ua-cam.com/video/qNbGNKbSGNE/v-deo.html
Havn't seen any Guided by Voices (much reference to powerpop, the Who, indie rock) come by in your collections; but I am sure you know them. I am a devote fan of them and Robert Pollard. Their discography is humongous and their vinyl and cd's are now becoming very collectable beside moving to my ears..
The Wrens for instance also one of my favorites.
And then there is the amazing world of Dunedin Sound music.......www.flyingnun.co.nz/......jangle pop, post-punk, indie pop/rock galore from beyond Down Under. BTW, great to see The Saints from Australia in your collection as well. (Postscript: I did see some of these bands pass by in some of your other vid's in the meantime; great!).
Music feeds the soul and is a constant companion. Enjoy!

I bought Morrissey - Viva Hate the first day it was released and it is the only record I ever bought I don't know what happened to. The Smiths are a top five band for me so this really hurt. Hi again! - Great Record Shows and many great finds - Thanks for mention: Best Coast - Plasticland and The Wrens - some new song to my Top 100-Year Lists on Spotify now - Yes Indeed
Chelsea is mostly famous for those who went "through" the Band, but have some good ones - the first LP by Generation X is Awesome - and UK Subs; I highly reccomend "Another Kind Of Blues (1979) great LP with many killers - and "Stranglehold" - and "White Punks On Dope" is of course on my Top 100 List for 1976 ;-)
Squeeze - The Undertines - The Stranglers - Siouxsie & The Banshees - Frank Tovey (Fad Gadget) - Dead Can Dance - SO GREAT ARTIST
LAMF is a must - hope you'll find a nice copy - I have "Live At Speakeasy" Awesome LIve-LP ;-)
PS: 50:50 by Sad Lovers & Giants is now also on my List for 1984 and Misfits - London Dungeon; 1987

Also, there is a lot of information to harvest on the comments you get on the show. Congratulations on the Gits score! Nice things happen to nice people! She was the "Queen of Soul" - unmatched vocals, amazing arrangements, and gospel-infused piano voicings. I consider her one of the 20th century's greatest artists. Maybe THE greatest. There is a compilation 2-cd set that her label Altantic put out, and I recommend it as a good starting point. Not sure if it's available on vinyl, though. Living in England I have been fortunate to be able to go to The Stranglers concerts on a yearly basis as they play in the City of Bristol which is close to my home City of Bath. At these concerts which are aimed more so at long term fans they play more of their album tracks rather than at festivals where they play their hits. At these concerts they do still play the songs that you say are not so acceptable or would not fly today. The crowd loves the songs like " I feel like a W**" and "Nubiles" which are on the No More Heroes album.
    Enjoy your album> Carmelo

Always enjoy a new video from Hanna! Thanks fer remindin' me I have all this Plasticland, Generation X, Tubes, Squeeze 'n Stranglers music to revisit. Dead Can Dance-The Serpent's Egg is one o' my favorite albums. There's a hidden whispered message in the track Severance (2:40-2:50...best checked out on headphones) which I've tried to decipher for decades, but still it eludes me. If you or anyone else can explain the words I'd love to know! I saw DCD live in Monterey in 2013 on the Anastasia tour. I was thrilled to finally see them but disappointed they only played 2 tracks I recognized in the 2 hour show as they concentrated mainly on new material. I usually hate it when that happens-major exception: The Genesis Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour when they played the entire new double album start to finish 'n encored with 2 familiar tracks-Life changin' concert! All best wishes from John.

Hi John! I find a lot of the words hard to decipher in both Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, but it doesn't bother me! Sorry that it was disappointing when you saw them on the Anastasis tour! I agree that with Cocteau Twins 'n Dead Can Dance the words are often hard to decipher...but this is somethin' different. A subliminal message intentionally inserted, just below the level needed to decipher. No matter how high you boost the volume it remains just outside yer ability to hear 'n comprehend. Spooky...compellin'...intriguin'...space whisper. What it is?

Gene October was in the Jubilee film with Adam Ant and Toyah. Chelsea were one of those early English Punk bands who released a couple of good singles. Not enough material for a studio album, let alone several. Subjective judgement, of course. Post-Punk postscript - have you ever featured any German bands like Malaria, Xmal Deutschland, Die Krupps? Malaria were an all-girl band who made a handful of records in the early 80s. Sounded a bit like the Virgin Prunes at times. Most accessible tracks are "Kaltes Klares Wasser" and "Your Turn To Run".

Hi Hanna, seems you are always looking for the same things as me but the difference is you find them lol. Some of the albums you showed I had for years or at least something by those bands, all awesome. Recently I got the last two Plasticland albums, they are amazing, kind of psych punk I think. Color appreciation and Plasticland self titled I understand are the same album? From your last video I found Comsat Angels Sleep no more for $5.00 with paper stick on the first song on each side, maybe I could fix that, but I think that is why it was so cheap. Never heard Sad lovers and Giants, searched on discogs and it's not easy to find at a nice price. Good to have that UK Subs live album, at least you have some of their best songs. I heard of the Gits but even the CD's are very expensive, great find !

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert

Happy weekend, Alejandro! I think the order of the track listing is totally different on Plasticland's Color Appreciation from their self-titled. Oh, bummer on the paper that is stuck on the record of Comsat Angels' Sleep No More! Hope you find a better copy in the future! You're right - Sad Lovers & Giants are very hard to find; same with the Gits. Hope all is well!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Thanks Hanna, I knew about the paper stuck to those songs before ordering the album on discogs, listened to those songs before and were my least favorites on the album. So happy you picked up the Misfits comp. I have that same one. Not an original but I think mine is from the 90s too. Record shows are really the bomb because of the deals and finding things cheaply that are not on Discogs. The Missouri one looks big. It looks to be the same size as the one in Houston that's held bi-monthly. I really need to hit the Houston one up again because I haven't been to it since COVID so it's been two months. I have never heard of Chelsea before. I'll have to check them out. If they opened for the Clash, that's some street cred. Nirvana - In Utero, hell yeah and I honestly like it better than Nevermind. I don't have the 2013 mix and you got me curious know how different it is from the original. That Heartbreakers find is a good one. I've seen that one once but failed to pick it up and I'm regretting it. The Stranglers...don't you hate it when things go missing? I am trying to find a record right now that I swore I purchased and now I can't find. It would help if I had my vinyl in Discogs ;) That Gits splatter vinyl is so cool! Man...what a score! Siouxsie and the Banshees sell out??? Seriously, that's a great album. Wow! Can't believe you scored an OG of the Serpent's Egg! I think I only have one UK original from the DCD. I agree with you that you have to be in the right mood to listen to DCD. That's true of a lot of things for me. I have never seen that Best Coast EP before and for $10??? That's a total score! That one should have had your name emblazoned on it ;)
Plastic Land, never heard of them but they are totally rockin' it with the look and for $7 a piece, it's not a bad thing. I will have to check them out. BTW - Totally jealous of the Generation X record. I've been looking for that one for sometime and I really like early Billy Idol.

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert
      @TheOmahaIntrovert  2 роки тому

Hey, Paul! Wow, that's cool that we possibly have the same Misfits comp down to the pressing! Yeah, this 4-state record show in Missouri was bigger than we thought it would be, which was a bit surprising considering it was held in a small town I had never heard of! I'd go again. Definitely pick up this live Heartbreakers if you ever see it again. This is the first time I've seen it anywhere. I love this Siouxsie album but the pressing is poo-poo! What a shame.
I knew you'd love seeing this OG pressing of The Serpent's Egg! You helped me get into DCD!
Best Coast remain a favorite of mine. I just wasn't too pleased with their last album. Always looking forward to hearing their next, though. Bethany's voice is perfect.
Yes, this Gen X album was a thrill to find...and that vendor said everything was half off at his table, so it was only $10! Chris also got Led Zep's Houses of the holy from him for $15 and it's VG+. :-)

The first Generation X album has a different line up of songs on the import, I prefer the U.S. version, which always had a hype sticker on it that read "This Is Not An Import." As far as Cool For Cats by Squeeze, I bought that when it first was released, but didn't find out until recently that the album came out with various different color combos on the cover, apparently these variations are hard to find, so keep an eye open for that. Stay well Hanna. ♥️

Congrats on the Gits. Lots of gray haired men at the Des Moines show! UK Subs are pretty tuneless, hard to love. Nice Plasticland finds! I think I had the original UK version of Generation X back in my radio show days because I remember being annoyed that "Your Generation" wasn't on it. Neither was "Wild Youth." OTOH your version is missing "Too Personal" and "The Invisible Man." I preferred the CD reissue that had everything plus "Wild Dub," "Trying for Kicks" and "This Heat." But eh, you can stream those if that's allowed in yr house ;)
Will you be going to the Austin record show in October? I'll have to warm up to get into that zen state of hours of flipping.
I've only recently started getting vinyl again, mainly to look at on my rotating wall of fame, though I did get my turntable repaired too, and in order to try to keep a cap on spending, focusing on mainly two eras, all-time favorite punk/post-punk from 77-81, and then psych/prog/doom from 2010s with particularly nice cover art. At some point I'll probably circle back and look for some faves from 1986, an interesting year with colorful albums by the Feelies, Easterhouse, Chameleons, Woodentops, Felt, The Church, Agent Orange, etc.

Great video, with some great finds. So, many I did not know.
I am very familiar with Carthage. Work used to take me through there pretty often. I couldn't picture a good record show there, but what do I know?
I haven't ventured too far past Pere Ubu's The Art of Walking. I need to go further. Good motivation.
I had forgotten about The Undertones version of Under The Boardwalk. You are right, definitely skip. But they have very little else you need to avoid. Such a great band.
Perfect description of The Stranglers. 'The lyrics probably wouldn't fly today" LOL they barely snuck by in the 70s & 80s. But when their songs are great they are really great. The No More Heroes song is my favorite of theirs.
Cool for Cats was the first song I heard from them. And it still hooks some every time!

Yeah, I give the Undertones a pass on that cover since the rest of the album and their material as a whole is absolutely brilliant!
Love that the "No More Heroes" track is your favorite off the Stranglers' LP. Great tune and album...just needs a bit of a heads up or warning for certain new listeners!

The Tubes certainly put on a "show". I was introduced to the Squeeze and " up the junction " as the song was used on the 1981 Sountract to what is a very quirky BBC film with Sting - Brimstone and Treacle. Perfect roll for Sting due to his devil and angel projections, plus he is supported by classic actors Joan Plowright and Denholm Elliot. My sister had the vinyl and I'm clueless how it crawled into my collection. If you can find the vinly or even source the film, I recommend. I observe a couple other vinyl sites and yours continues to a good music lead source, well done. You guys enjoy your next road trip.

Meant to mention the NYC band The Senders for late 80s to 1990s high energy garage psych. rock. I dunno how many albums they put out, or not, but we saw them open for
various bands in particular The Fleshtones at places like Continental years ago, mainly early 90s to mid 90s, and they were always a fun garage psych. type band. Got the crowd
going into a frenzy like The Fleshtones. Dunno what became of them. P.S. Had to have my cable dude come and check my home Internet the other day, turns out their own
newish router (2 years old) seems to be kind of dying, maybe that's why my UA-cam stuff is so erratic too, not sure. I just bought a new good quality Netgear router
