He can't even get to most of it, there's a point where collecting becomes hoarding and when you can't walk around your house you've probably crossed it
@@crazyprayingmantis5596yeah just looking at how the CD'S were stored. They're 80% inaccessible and it just does my head in. Then the sea of LP's on the floor. Nice to have but deep down, for me, it would be hard to enjoy and share the enjoyment if you have to move records to get to others. It's almost pointless but that's just me. 😮
I probably have around 1000-1200 of either kind - by far most of them actually found on Ebay or at local thrift shops and second-hand stores, but in good condition, sometimes near mint condition. Some of the CD's are copies off discs I borrowed at the public library - often stuff that would have been very hard to find on the normal market (I rarely buy new CD's at full price anymore). Stretches across a wide band of genres: from classical and opera to rock, jazz, soul and electronic music - and across more than a century of recording.. :)
Wow. Encyclopedic knowledge and just genuine enthusiasm. He's so affable, my first thought was that he has the same level of passion for music as John Peel. Give the man a radio show.
Wow - that's my old mate Barry from school days. And yes, I echo what the guy below said, my 2000 vinyl albums make me look like an absolute beginner. Way to go Barry.

I’m 50 & have just short of 4,000 in my collection & it’s getting to the point I’ve got enough now but I can’t imagine not buying another record in my lifetime so it’s easy to see how this guy has built his up. Those CD’s though !! What ? How does he pull a CD out from that lot ?? 🤣. Great video though, nice one man.
I remember Barry Winton from many years ago writing for the Record Collector magazine and wondered what HD happened to him. Low and behold there he was, in the court of the vinyl King. Great interview, fantastic insights from a gentleman who knows his music like very few others. Rock on Basa and how can I obtain your books. Would love to see them.
I sent this video to Mick Box of Uriah Heep and he replied with: "Excellent and amazing collection". Mick was most impressed with his old mate Mr Winton's incredible vinyl collection. Barry is, of course, a huge Heep fan. As big as they come.
A friend of my Dads has the biggest collection I've ever seen. His knowledge is just incredible. He too has the golden ticket in our provincial town in that for 25-30+ years he has "got in round the back" at every charity shop and auction house as Barry puts it here.... The speed at which he checks whether an LP has it's inner sleeve or not is lightning! You should interview Long Gone John of Sympathy...!
It is so great to see that someone has a real appreciation of music. He seems a gentleman as well. I remember seeing some of Barry’s journals years ago - I’d always wondered what happened to him. Glad to see him still thriving.
In addition to his meteoric record collection, Barry Winton is a person of great and varied learning on the subject of bands and record labels. As far as I know, he is currently working on his 8th book - but I have to admit, it's not easy keeping up with what Barry is doing! He is a sterling fellow, well loved by his friends, record dealers, musicians and the community.
I bloody love that Rise Above Records shop in London. It’s an Aladdin’s cave of gems (priced accordingly!) Run by a lovely couple too. I lived in London for 15 years but have since moved to Sydney. I dream of dropping into Rise Above on my next visit home.
When you get to the point where you couldn't possibly listen to all of your music collection even once in your remaining lifetime, is it time to let stuff go for others to enjoy? Obviously, others will enjoy it after you pass, but wouldn't it be more satisfying to watch them enjoy it while you're still alive? Personally, I feel rewarded by the gratitude expressed by folks that are grateful that I was able to share parts of my collection with. It makes the years of collecting all worthwhile. It outweighs the pain of letting go of stuff that you worked so hard to collect, IMHO. Amazing work putting this collection together ❤️.
Oftentimes there not even enough demand for the stuff your thinking “others are gonna enjoy” lol, might as well enjoy it yourself, even if its just prt of the wall at a certain point lol
If he's got multiple copies of rare albums in the wall rack and can't reach it because there's no floor space then he either needs to move, or cull the duplicates. I'd say put one minty copy of each on the wall and then work though all the ones on the floor. It's not like he's ever going to play all those records again.
I've known Barry since the early 80's. Even helped him in a shop he had in Carnaby Street. Haven't seen him for many years but hes a genuine lovely bloke.
I've got maybe a thousand LPs and a thousand CDs - I've also got around a thousand movies so my collection is a bit more diverse and I've had a wife to support for 33 years! So I could never hope to get as close as this guy who clearly loves music and music alone. I've got too many interests to build a collection in one area like that. I would call record collecting at Mr Winton's level an art. It is an art form in itself. What an admirable achievement. x
Great video. Barry is a very cool guy. I have a lot of titles myself for my space. But to me access is everything. If I can't access it, I don't really have it. Space and money seem to dictate the size of my collection. Hopefully he can make some money and open up some space if he decides to sell and enjoy some good meals and concerts and travel to music meccas with the money or whatever.
Thank you for sharing this, im a collector of CDs and DVDs myself but don't have as much as this man does, it's a big WOW to see how he has collected over the years. This is awesome 😎👍

Excellent video as always , really enjoy following you guys , you are so lucky to have access to so many excellent record shops in and around london , keep up with the videos ,
Not only a huge collection but the right stuff, evident from the moment he walks into the first shop. Prog is probably the genre most likely to make you fall in love with music for life. Slower panning of your camera would help a bit though, but still an incredible video.
Had the pleasure of meeting Barry, totally by chance, outside The London Palladium while queuing in the rain to see Engelbert Humperdinck Sun 8th September. Not convinced that he made it into the show? What an interesting & lovely guy. I promised I’d give him a mention… here I am! Pleasure to have met you Barry! 😀
I did this with books at one time. Id say wow this is special and get it until i had floor to ceiling books. I unloaded 80% of them and realized how wrong it was just accumulating crap😂.
Thanks for sharing. Barry’s accent reminds me of Martin Newell from The Cleaners From Venus. Record collectors are fascinating. Overwhelming sure but a labor of love.
With around 700 LP's,600 CD's roughly I thought I had a lot.But that is no comparison to his....lol Have been collecting since age 11-12,almost 50 years now.But have limited storage space, plus several other hobbies besides listening to & collecting music. Thanks for sharing, that is truly impressive.
The albums on the wall also act as soundproofing so turning up the stereo won't be a problem. I hope the building is structurally sound because those albums weigh a lot and I only have five hundred records and I'm jealous .
Really enjoyed this. Amazing collection. Barry seems like a cool guy and is obviously passionate about music. Would be keen on checking out his Bronze label book.
What does this guy do for a living? He said he makes no money off his books. He kind of reminds me of a cross between tiny tim and Dio. He looks like he lives in a small flat or apartment.
If you can't get to a cd or even browse them without the whole thing falling down you are a hoarder. The broader point of what he does is listen to a record a few times and put it way forever. This is a sickness. Collecting stuff at this level is like Golem and the Ring, it never ends, and it definitely isn't about music. He should open a record shop so he could get some productivity out of that ridiculous pile. Everyone loves music btw lol. There are other reasons for this. No way there are even that many records worth listening to in the first place.
@@Randy950 yeah it’s ridiculous. I’d have serious anxiety if I had that mess in my house. A personal collection should be curated. With therapy he could probably do without about 90% of those records.
This. This is why I collect vinyl. The people, the stories, the relationships, and the passion that surrounds a round piece of plastic. Is it an outmoded format? Probably. Does any other media give you the same opportunities to meet people, build long-lasting friendships and allow the music to seep into your DNA? Probably not.
Charity shops died 10 years ago for vinyl... I LOVED going around them before vinyl became fashionable. Got loads, i miss those days, never thought they'd end.
It's great to have a passion or a hobby. But...videos like these are the best addiction treatment for me. I've stopped at 1500 vinyls, I'm currently selling the ones I don't care about musically and I only buy the ones that I listen to. But even then I would need 2 full months of my life of non-stop listening to hear them all...
Yeah, every time I see huge collections I think it's impossible to listen to all those records before you die. But then again, in these cases it's not about the listening anymore, it's more about the good feeling of finding something interesting to add to your collection.
@@Judezki92 i think it´s more like you have all the music you like so one can hear it when it feels like listening to this or that or wish i had this ,today most of it can be listened on spotify or tidal but before one had to buy the records or record it into a reel or cassette but that is even more dificult find in boxes of reels or cassettes the recorded songs or albums
Awesome! Could talk to that dude for years! Glad to see you went to Dave. I used to visit him regular when I lived in London. I remeber when he opened his store, it was half the width it is these days and there was NO categorisation 😂 I literally spent about 5 hours there digging through. Got loads that day
Barry Winton is well known to anybody who has worked in any of the second hand record shops in London. There are a wide range of opinions about him.....
Oh wow, he showed that Jody Grind One Step On. That was a favorite of the guy who got me into a lot of this great UK prog back when. Barry reminds me of him in terms of the knowledge and the stories, but Barry's collection is even more incredible. What a life. This is pretty much the dream I chase.
I don't know why, but i get inspired when i see these sort of videos. I got down the rabbit hole of music when i see the albums people listen to. Great video.
Good God! My old mate Barry!! What a pleasure to see him. Last time I’ve seen him was at Earls Court arena for a Prince concert. We sat together. Mimmo
Holy disc avalanche! But if he fancies playing his CD copy of - I don't know - Overkill & it's 5 up from the carpet with 200 CDs on top of it behind another stack, does he just give up & stream it? Fishing out the records he wants to play must be like working in a warehouse!
Exactly what I was thinking: Imagine all the (hundreds...thousands ?) of CDs and vinyl he has no access to in years (?) just because he can't... Am I the only one to think that is not a ordinary collection (because he simply can NOT get to a quarter of them...) but just a pile of records and CDs...?!?
I'd say he can't get to more than half of them. That entire space behind the couch is full of records on the floor so he couldn't get to most of the stuff on the racks. Most of the cds are inaccessible
I have 25000 LPs and a garage load of twelve inches, been collecting for 40 years. Back then records were much cheaper and you could pick up amazing stuff in charity shops and car boot sales/jumble sales. Golden days…
The Little Record Shop looks dope, especially with that stack of the HIP HOP collection he acquired & the GANG STAR album on the wall! I’m gonna have to check out his site, eventhough I’m in the USA! I would love to come across an entire hip hop collection! One day….

Amazing video. I have a great Barry book, “My life in Rock”, which is amazing!!! I’d like to have the others. Does he have a contact where he can be reached?
This video is so genuinely great, by the way. The algorithm randomly decided to show this + your Japanese collection interview videos. I'm not so much a fan of classic rock personally (more-so post-00s emo, pop-punk, post-hardcore, metalcore for me), though obviously still appreciate it all. More than that, I've always REALLY enjoyed just seeing passionate people speak knowledgably and passionately about subjects they care about. It's fascinating to me! You have some really cool, interesting, expert-knowledge characters on here, the interviews are great, getting an insight into why they collect, what they collect, seeing their collections and hunting grounds is really great, and I love how you let them speak. It's so easy for videos like this (on any subject) have the UA-camr feel they need to "prove" they know just as much by hogging the video, but I love that you're really providing a sincere window into others'. Great stuff, have subscribed.
Thanks for the very kind words! That's what I'd like to try and do - get more collectors on the channel and build a community out of it. Then the name of the channel "The Vinyl Hunters" will have a larger meaning than when we started :)

I have several thousand pieces, more than I’ll be able to listen to again in my life (everything gets played before it goes on the shelf) and always see more things I want. So I made a rule for myself - when a new record comes in, another one has to go. Then either I realize don’t want the new one so much - or I’m improving the collection by swapping it in. Quantity isn’t so hard. Curating quality is more meaningful.

I only have 600 vinyl's and 300 cd's and it drives the wife nuts! I went through it all last year and listed them all in alphabetic order and go through the lists to play stuff otherwise I was just forgetting what I had - this guy must have a massive memory to manage all that and put his hands on everything!
I don't know if it's possible to listen to 30000 albums in a lifetime. That's 30000 hours roughly of listening. Records are a great investment.
He can't even get to most of it, there's a point where collecting becomes hoarding and when you can't walk around your house you've probably crossed it
Thats why u built a shed he is not a hoarder he is a collector@@crazyprayingmantis5596
What a great guy Barry is.... brilliant video and absolutely fantastic collection.... great stuff.
When you think you've seen it all, this video drops. Truly outstanding! This guy is the real deal. Full of passion and purpose and a real love of music that one can only dream of having. I absolutely loved watching this video. Thank you,
Tom from Seattle.
Wow, what a collection. Barry seems like a top bloke but all those records !!
Regarding the CDs - One day he might create an earthquake 😂
About 700 vinyls and 300 cds . But hey , nothing compared to this guy .❤
Collectors don't play old CDs, they just go out and buy another copy because its easier than browsing at home.
Wow ! Wow ! Wow ! Thanks so much for taking us on this great day out . Absolutely amazing !!!!
I can’t believe I have been spotted, I’m the guy at Rise Records 🤣 keep up the good work! 1:29
Are you ' the lovely Helen '? Hope so ....gorgeous 😊
I got his dvd..
I had that large enough of a collection finally got it down to 6000 I couldn't manage that many ❤
What a great person: so friendly and kind.
What a great passionate bloke, fully involved with what he loves and a very down to earth person, god bless him
It is so great to see that someone has a real appreciation of music. He seems a gentleman as well. I remember seeing some of Barry’s journals years ago - I’d always wondered what happened to him. Glad to see him still thriving.
He was mixed up in some shady stuff twenty odd years ago.
I know Barry , I’ve met him a few times , nice guy , he never told me he had 30,000 records, wow , I will probably speak to him soon .
Would love to have this gentleman as a friend. Seems like a great guy
Judging by his Gentle Giant shirt, this man has great taste in music.
Where can I get one? Looks brand new but searches don't show it for sale anywhere.
@@togfiado band merch website probably
Where does he keep em all ?????? I had to box up mine and stash them in my garage - after recording them on 200,000 hrs on tape !!!❤❤❤❤❤
What an admirable achievement. x
Iam the same as you& also cassettes but no wife fortunately lol. Greetings from northern Ireland. 😮
Got a mania for foreign cinema circa 1950 to the present. All with English subtitles, about 250-300 TB's, converting over to solid state. Your guest is a treasure trove, just fascinating.
What a great collection and collector. His passion is contagious. ❤
More cd's than he can listen to never mind access - a fascinating illness, hopefully I can learn from this
I did this with books at one time. Id say wow this is special and get it until i had floor to ceiling books. I unloaded 80% of them and realized how wrong it was just accumulating crap😂.
Being at the right place at the right time. Music is soulful, no matter the genre. He must have a ton of stories to tell.
Thanks for sharing. Barry’s accent reminds me of Martin Newell from The Cleaners From Venus. Record collectors are fascinating. Overwhelming sure but a labor of love.
I only collect records that I actually listen, the condition of the cover is not a deal-breaker for me.. I have 40-50 records. This guy is a legend.
What an absolutely top bloke Barry is, really genuine and charming. Anyone know where to actually buy his books?
When Barry took the Aqualung album he made me smile i love Jethro Tull and it's my favorite Tull album too! Very nice collection and a nice guy too.
great video - and I'll add my voice to the chorus of those interested in buying his books - I can't seem to find them anywhere!
What a lovely bloke- Barry - amazing collection too!
Popped up to the little record shop today from south london. Had a great experience. David runs a proper shop.
Tiny Tim and Dio is a great description 😂
Spot on 👌
Bit of Donovan too😮
Seems like we’re on the threshold between the collecting world and the hoarding world.
@@Pluralofvinylisvinyls Plural of vinyl is 'records'...🙄
@@eyeshot4866 😮
I had over 40,000 vinyls 12” and LPs and over ten years sold them all, no regret, made very good money from it . Still have over 3500 CD albums.
I would at least have kept about 1.000 vinyl records , the absolute favourite ones …
Barry! You need to do more of these. Loved it. Well done 😃
Amazing Barry's Collection. Looking forward to reading one of his books 📚
I wonder if he has any SUN RA records? I am sure he does 🛸
Insane collection his knowledge and love for music is inspiring! Id love to meet him! great video mate!! cheers
Really interesting meeting you and your friend today -so steeped in music -enlivened the journey
Incredible! Really inspiring stuff. Thanks for the great video and introducing us to Barry.
What a cool guy, and an amazing collection of music. WOW!!!
I have that Ramases record, the guy believed he was the reincarnation of the Egyptian pharaoh’Ramases’ hence the name of the album.
What a wonderful video and what a great character - I would buy his books !
I'm still looking to find that first Hard Stuff record in the wild. Great band.
Fantastic video. And what an amazing guy! As a long-time collector of music, I'd love to sit down and chat with Barry.
Speaks with the confidence and authority of someone who knows his shit inside out.
Amazing ! Merci beaucoup from Belgium

Brilliant video, as I said before Barry is a top guy , I had to watch again !
The guy you want to have as a friend.
Amazing collection ! Down to earth and humble ! Enjoy life !
Mimmo
Take a shot every time he says “okay”
"Jake"
I'd like to buy his books, but don't know where. Does he have a publishing deal with these record companies?
0:37 during 80s n 90s i had just over a thousand albums then moved to galway ireland til 2006 which i bloody kept em all now.
30000 LPs...That's Bloody AMAZING!...
The Little Record Shop looks dope, especially with that stack of the HIP HOP collection he acquired & the GANG STAR album on the wall! I’m gonna have to check out his site, eventhough I’m in the USA! I would love to come across an entire hip hop collection! One day….

i' m pleased to see so many record shops in n.london again, must have a look in next time i'm up!
This just flowed beautifully and Barry's passion for music is so endearing and so inspiring ..I almost feel excited for them and like a few friend together getting ready for a great gig ..Keep Music live ! and as willy the shake once said ..if music be the food of love ...play on . thanks for putting this video up ..its cooler than cool well done both ..Barry and Jake ! love the passion ..in us all just need the flame to light that music magic ...and this video does it .
Great video, would love to see a digging video at the Little Record Shop, that's my fav spot and David is the man!!
Mr Winton has a fabulous collection, and what a great guy, this video was very enjoyable to watch!
