    Well done on getting your shop items into the totes, then labeling them for easy reference .

    That looks awesome! For labeling, I would label the racks as A1, A2, B1, B2, etc for rows and columns. Then on the index cards I would write or print in the corner which one it goes into. That way if you ever want to move the totes, you're just reprinting the index card vs the index card and the shelf tag. Think of the rack spot as a warehouse location and the inventory that goes into that location may change over time.

    If you’re re-using those air compressors and you don’t know the history, make sure the tanks haven’t gone too rusty - nobody wants one rupturing. There are inspection plugs so you can inspect inside.

    • @tullgutten
      @tullgutten Рік тому +12

      Also you can hit it with a hammer underneath, if it feels soft or softer than the sides it is junk.
      If it is good you can fill it with evaporust to clean , then heat dry it and use some metall paint inside, only need lower half or 10cm as the rest will never collect any water or rust

    • @ronlovell5374
      @ronlovell5374 Рік тому +1

      I wouldn't re-use them, especially not knowing the age/true condition of em and with all the moisture problems with the building/property, just asking for trouble. Also the size of the tank falls into commercial which requires state regulated inspections and certificates.

    • @whatdaf11
      @whatdaf11 Рік тому +1

      Depends on what the local regulations are for pressure vessels. Generally you find that when they are made, they have a certain wall thickness, and hopefully they have a name plate with a serial number and max pressure rating, and that will start to give you clues as to what wall thickness remaining would still be usable. From all this, maybe there is someone that can do pressure vessel inspection to determine if it's ok, but again, check with local regulations.

    • @whatdaf11
      @whatdaf11 Рік тому

      And another thing that I think is just as important as the tank is the safety relief valves fitted to them, may be advisable to change them with new ones, especially if you don't know their age. Again, check with local regulations and a local pressure vessel inspector

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  Рік тому +24

      Definitely going to look into this, just pulled the pressure relief valves on both of them to reduce the pressure in the meantime.

    One thing I’d add to perfect the tote system would be a dedicated trolley (a little folding one would be great) to live next to the shelving. That way, you have a dedicated trolley to transport the totes from storage to work site, and it’ll make putting them away less of a chore. Carrying one by hand, no big deal. Moving say 4 totes, gonna need that trolley

      @@craftedworkshop I put Behr garage floor paint down in my basement workroom 12 years ago and it’s still holding up great. Best $50 I ever spent lol. I mop it a couple of times a year, still in great shape mine you it’s not a workspace like yours where it would take more of a beating but if you’re not parking cars on it the paint holds up pretty good.

    Don’t store plastic fuel can on concrete floor. Use a wood off cut to raise them clear of the floor.

      I'll probably scrape it off but that window is essentially useless, just looks into another part of the shop.

    Great job, as always but SCRAP THOSE COMPRESSORS! They fall into commercial pressure vessel category, and are extremely dangerous without monitored/regulated service, maintenance and state inspections. You can see the stamped plates and attached piping have been painted and they look far more than 10 years old. A failure in just one of em can be fatal and will level your entire shop!

      @craftedworkshop  Рік тому +2

      Interesting! Would it be worth finding someone to inspect them or just start fresh?

      @ronlovell5374 Рік тому

      @craftedworkshop I would purchase a couple smaller units that don't fall under commercial category, and put em in a cage. You hear in the news a lot about old or neglected pressure vessels rupturing taking people and structures with em. Stored pressure energy only needs a pin hole, which is definitely higher risks with age, internal rust, poor welds, number of welds or repairs. Old units should never be repaired.

    Nothing says poor planning like building racks and weighing them down, BEFORE you mount the inverters on the wall above them. Maybe you like stretching and leaning over something while hanging inverters on a wall?

    Now you'l have to move the batteries to get to the wall to mount the inverters... too bad those shelves don't have casters. IMHO, the Uline pallet shelves are much more elegant than those Craftsman... too many little parts.

    • @craftedworkshop
      @craftedworkshop  Рік тому

      I think I can get them mounted with the batteries there. Casters would be cool but they'd have to be insanely beefy for this rack system.

    Please don't take the risk! Scrap those compressors and buy new ones. With all the moisture problems you dealt with, size, welds and age of those units, they could be potential bombs. After a certain size they require state regulated inspections, as you can see the old boiler safety stickers on em. One tank that size can level that entire building in a failure. Not worth the risk, probably why they were left behind, they weren't worth moving or keeping.
