    When Tommen jumped out that window, that was the single most decisive decision that poor kid ever made in his entire life.

    • @nullunit
      @nullunit 3 роки тому +191

      He doesn't jump or throw himself really, it's like he just tips himself off the sill. "Well, Imma head out...".
      I was very sad for him. He knew nothing but weird violence his whole life.
      Robert was a dick and beat his mother, then is killed by a jug of whine and side of bacon.
      Joff was a pyscho and dies gasping while he watches basically,
      Sister was pure sunshine gets sent off comes back dead,
      Grandpa dead on the shitter killed by his funny uncle who he probably thinks killed his brother.
      Just mayhem, to then see basically everyone that is even remotely nice to him, regardless of their motive, explode in green fire, and you know your mom did it, primarily so she could control the power attached to you. Yeah, I think a long drop and sudden stop is maybe a good choice.

      @@heyitsgrey8388 While I wholeheartedly agree that GRRM bears a much larger brunt of the blame than he's usually given, unfortunately, the showrunners did a panel down in Austin, TX (Austin Film Festival) after the series ended where they flat-out admitted they had no idea what they were doing and were ready to move on from GoT. I mean, quite literally, they stated GoT was just an "expensive film school" for them to learn from. They said they were given the means for more support from the studio and turned it down. They mentioned that GRRM had given them a brief idea on how they wanted the show to end and that they got caught up in the hype of "thinking they knew better" than him based on the popularity of the show and their efforts behind it.
      The irony is that they said so many really dumb, indefensible comments about their own poor work the last few seasons, all the while giving us what fans ask for all the time - more transparency. Admitting to your failures doesn't absolve them of the criticism they deserved, but it's interesting that they actually were so transparent about how woefully unqualified they were for their positions and it only made their situation worse.

    Battle of the Bastards is still the best battle I've ever seen, definitely on the small screen and probably even on the big screen. Most on screen snazzy jazzy heroic battles age like milk, this has aged like fine wine. I'm always left speechless by the grit and realism of this battle. Just how well they filmed it. Everytime I rewatch it there's a new visual metaphor that I'd previously missed. They deserved every accolade they got from it. If this was a hurricane, the finale is a tsunami. Twice as many head twisting moments. I'm always in awe of just how many shocking turn of events they manage to pack in one single episode. Every one of them hit like a brick wall. This is like a double triple watch episode. Everytime I rewatch I catch some new symbolism in the scenes. And hats off to the music. The way it adds to the suspense of the Sept scene is unreal. Who else is unreal? Liam Cunningham as Davos berating Mellisandre. Amazing acting! This episode somehow manages to satisfy every demand that has been simmering for so long. Battle of the Bastards is an unreal episode, but this is so fantastic in a different way that it manages to make it a hard call between the two. Deserved every accolade it got.

      To be fair, most people were confused unless they were really into the GOT universe and looked up stuff outside the show. You really needed the context of the lore to really understand that reveal. The show does not do a good job of making it clear on its own. Yes it hints at it all along but no one is going to put those puzzle pieces together when they dont even know there's a puzzle. Most people who watched the show when it was airing already knew the theories and stuff so most people already suspected it before it was revealed. But i've watched several people react to the show who watched later on after it was done airing and didn't get any of that added context, and none of them understand the whole reveal thing until comments explain it.

    With Cersei on The Iron Throne, Dany on her way, and Jon as King in The North, The War of Five Kings is effectively over. However, The Lannisters are not in a position of actual power; Dorne and The Tyrells hate them, The North/The Vale hate them, The Riverlands hate them, The Greyjoys(Yara's faction) are no friends to them, and Dany's faction would be more than happy to depose Cersei.
    Honestly without Tywin, The Lannisters no longer have a level headed leader managing their house.
    Edit: Lancel was paralyzed from that stab wound, even if he wanted to he could not get up.
    Second edit: Callback Robert Baratheon's remark about allowing Cersei to execute Sansa's direwolf, Lady: "Get her a dog, she'll be happier."

      I feel it was necessary to speed up the pacing. Because honestly what were they going to fill the episodes with? More traveling by horseback and having conversations while moving on to the next big plot point? I'm glad they sped things up a bit, though the final season could have used two more episodes, maybe more traveling. Like what did they say originally it takes like a whole month for Robert Baratheon to get from Kings Landing to Winterfell? And then on the way back down it took like four episodes to get back? But during all that time there were things happening, plot-wise. But now that things are condensing down in these later seasons, theres no reason to dwell on the traveling around aspect. But I do wish there would be some better indicators on how much time has passed. Which is kinda why I wished that the world had more "normal" seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter) rather than seasons lasting years. That could have been such a great indicator of time passing.

    I always thought it was a flaw in the writing, done for dramatic effect, that Sansa didn't tell Jon about the Knights of the Vale. Sansa knew that Jon needed more soldiers, she saw him openly discussing a battle plan that was based on the assumption that they could only fight with the soldiers they had. Had she told Jon that she had access to a second army, Jon would have made a completely different battle plan, and thousands of soldiers wouldn't have died needlessly.
    I think they wrote it that way because they wanted a dire moment where all hope was lost, until something comes in to save the day. But I don't think Sansa would have done that, I think saying that she would because she has trust issues is a flimsy excuse. She wants to win the battle, badly. So does Jon. At this point in the story she's pretty sharp, she understands the game of thrones, so she would take the actions that give her the best chance of winning. She would definitely be aware that telling Jon about a second possible army would give her that best chance. As Natalie said, they were going for the LotR scene where the cavalry come to save the day, but in doing so, they threw Sansa's character under the bus.
    And don't get me started on Jon charging. The guy who was willing to sacrifice glory, a lordship (promised by Stannis) and finally his life, just to save the lives of strangers (the wildlings), threw away the lives of his soldiers in a suicide charge? Gimme a break. I know he lost his brother, but he showed his ability to make extremely difficult leadership calls time and time again during the show. But, I guess Jon biting back his anger and fighting a strategic battle doesn't setup the big save from the Knights of the Vale so.... to hell with that I guess.

    • @Konradius001
      @Konradius001 3 роки тому +3

      This could have been done way better, I agree. But the reason this happens is that Sansa gets excluded from a lot of the battle prep. I think I remember some hints to that in those episodes. Last Minute ? Everyone go nuts over Arya killing Frey and then zone out on the next scene but I think that's the one that's artistically superior. The beautiful backdrop of the snowy Godswood with LF in the shadows looking intriguing as ever. Sansa sitting in the same spot Ned sat forever ago in the first episode. The slowed down Stark music is like daggers to the heart. When he says "forgive me my lady if you're at prayer" and she dolefully replies "I'm done with all that". That's full circle to when Cersei scoffed at her during Blackwater for naively putting her faith in the cruel Gods. She speaks little in that scene but conveys all that she's been through with her eyes: "The past is gone for good. You can sit here mourning its departure or prepare for the future". If we can forget about all the Big Brain critiques just for a sec and soak in what an uncanny road it's been for both of them! Out of everyone that's come and gone, it's these two who are still standing. " *A picture of me on the Iron Throne and you by my side* " 😈

    Re: the girl who hunted Aria.
    This was a particularly weird part of the books. But MY impression was that GRRM made the battle very ethereal, and it was MY impression that it NEVER REALLY HAPPENED Not in the real world.
    I felt Aria had to "battle herself" and MY take was that it was all a battle in her own mind. The point being she had to overcome some aspect of herself in order to get her name back and go free.
    She obviously DID NOT take half a dozen deep belly wounds then roll.down the town market steps. One such wound in this world would mean a slow death without magical healing.
    Seemed more a spell that No One cast, a Final Exam, if you will, before she could be released to fulfill.her true purpose / destiny.

      This is really interesting insight. I always feel weird about the Aria plotline too, everyone knows that the faceless men are no one and can become someone else. We even see the waif turn into jaqen at one point. And yet, for some reason, when it comes to the Waif and Aria everyone always treats the Waif like a regular person and hates her. In reality the waif, aria, and jaqen are actually the same person, right? I always sort of thought that Jaqen was playing "good cop" and the Waif was "bad cop" but they were really the same. And I sort of took the whole thing as Jaqen basically training her to be true to herself while also training her to kill. He never wanted her to be a faceless man. I mean, he must've known all along that Aria never gave up needle, right? When Aria killed the Waif, she was actually "killing" Jaqen too, basically she was standing up to them in order to be herself. And when she finally did that, he was proud and let her go, as she had passed her training.

      Did Arya imagine that actress healing her/ dying as well? Was the actress never real? How many other peripheral characters are not real? Was she real up until the point where Arya's mind needed her to be show up, then she just imagined her? If that was the case, they could have clued us in on the imagination by having Arya's wound's magically be closed, indicating something more than reality going on, instead they take a substantial amount of time trying to explain how Arya DOES, in fact survive her obviously fatal wounds.
      Maybe your theory is right. A much simpler theory is simply that the show just got way stupider the longer it went on. Here's that and 24 other examples, largely of people who absolutely should have died, but just sort of miraculously "don't" because plot. Unless you have some "it was all imagination" excuse for all of them.

      @@cmudd9788 I think there was more to it than that and I think it goes all the way back to the threat of the white walkers. The Faceless Men worship death, and the white walkers steal from the God of Death (aka the Many-Faced God) by raising the dead. So he is training Arya in the ways of the Faceless Men, an ultimate assassin, quick, silent, and able to fight in complete darkness, to make her able to fight the white walkers, but ultimately she doesn't need to be a Faceless Man. He is fine with her being Arya because Arya would be in the North, on the front lines when the white walkers attack. Maybe he even preferred her to be.
      If the waif had succeeded in killing Arya, he would have been disappointed that he had been wrong to believe in Arya and that he would have to find a new apprentice. In that outcome, it would have also have served as a test for the waif, to see if she was ready to be no one herself, or if she would give into her personal desires for making Arya suffer. But his preferred outcome was that Arya would prove herself superior and ready to end her training.
      Besides, the Many-Faced God got Lady Crane's life, regardless.
