So to explain a couple of things: 1. "Snow" is the surname given to bastards, or children born out of wedlock, that live in the region know as The North. All the regions of Westeros do this. The southernmost region, Dorne, is an arid, desert like area. Bastards there are named "Sand". Bastards from The Riverlands are named "Rivers" and so on. It is basically a way of pointing out that they are illegitimate children of lords, and therefore have no rights of succession in the family. 2. Every major family (Stark, Lannister, Baratheon, etc.) have a motto. The Stark motto is "Winter is Coming." In this world, summers and winters can last for years, even decades. It has been many years since the last true winter at this point, but as the Starks live in The North, they are keenly aware of how devastating Winter can be. They are always vigilant of the coming winter, hence their "house words." I am so excited to watch this series and see your reaction to it.
To make you feel better the dog that Sansa had the one they killed at the end of the second episode Lady was adopted by the girl who played Sansa. And the reason his last name is Snow is due to the area he was born, If you are a bastard born in the river lands the last name would be River. If the bastard born in Dorn (which is the south) it is Sands.
@@cooki3th1ef Incorrect, that isint a constant. It's very loose, and it should be specified only Highborn bastards get the surname. Excerpt from "Bastardry" a wiki of ice and fire. "The surname a bastard received appears to be connected to the location the child is raised, though this is not a consistent rule. Because of this, bastards who are half-siblings might have different surnames. For example, King Robert I Baratheon's eldest bastard, born and raised in the Vale, is called Mya Stone, while his bastard from the stormlands (fathered on a noblewoman from the Reach) is called Edric Storm. However, whilst Aegor Rivers was raised at Stone Hedge in the riverlands, his half-brother Brynden was also called Rivers, despite having lived at least the first few years of his life with his mother at King's Landing in the crownlands.[21] Prince Oberyn Martell's eight bastard daughters all have the surname Sand, even though the eldest, Obara, lived in Oldtown in the Reach during the earlier years of her life"
@@cooki3th1ef Biggest point, it's not a true rule. There's no law in Westeros demanding noble bastards take the lands name, it's a custom so yes you are incorrect. While refered to as a rule you should view it more as a practice or custom, its not enshrined in law and is thus malleable. I'm not trying to be rude, just pointing out what you said was incorrect. You literally attempted to do the same thing. In truth it can be boiled down to whatever bastard name fits best being the one that sticks, not fully where your raised or fully where you were born. Perhaps a mix of both. If you had instead said that it's usually not where your born, but where your raised that could be a correct statement. But it's also obvious that the place you are born is usually the place your raised anyway.

"Winter is Coming" the seasons in this world last for an indefinite amount of time. So instead of a few months, winter could last for years or even decades.
"Winter is Coming" is house Stark's family quote all house's have them but in this world summer's and winter's can last for years or decade's but winter always returns and it could last for a generation so the saying "Winter is Coming" is also saying prepare for leaner time's
The great thing about "Winter is Coming" is that it's pretty versatile. You're right it's a warning to be vigilant and enjoy the good times (and use them to prepare for the bad times ahead) It's also like a family pride kind of thing. Like, "Don't talk to me, a Stark, about hardship. Winter is coming and you will be retaught the lessons the Northerners know in our bones."
Honestly I don't know why she's doing this to herself...and I say that as someone who loved GOT. I LOVED IT. A production issue you should be aware of: There will be multiple episodes where a foreign language is spoken and an on-screen translation is auto-generated by the closed captioning system. If you get your episodes from a source other than HBO or the disc sets, the closed captioning may not function and you will not see the translations. Test your videos to make sure the closed-captioning is functional. It does NOT have to be actually turned on to see the translations.

"Winter is Coming" is the Stark family motto. The Westeros winters are like mini-ice ages and can last for years. They also bring ... nasty things. Jon Snow is called "Snow" because he has no family name to take (e.g. Stark). "Sand" is used similarly in the southern kingdom. The show follows the books pretty well (apart from merging or removing various characters for the sake of simplicity) but does unfortunately suffer once they run out of source material.
Bastards in each kingdom are named after the most common thing you see there. In the North its Snow, in the Riverlands its Rivers, in the mountains of the Vale its Stone, in the deserts of Dorne its Sand, in the fertile lands of the Reach its Flowers, in the Stormlands its Storm, Waters for Kings Landing, Hill for the Westerlands, in the Iron Islands its Pyke, the name of the biggest island of the chain.

Ser Waymar, the son of Lord Yohn Royce, was the "intern" as it were, the newest guy, getting a training command mission. “Winter is coming” = House Stark motto. In this world, the seasons are much different. Winter and summer last years, sometimes decades. House Stark holds the North and protects the realm from the dangers beyond the ice wall, so their motto means they’re always prepared for the worst. Snow = name given to illegitimate children in the north. Each realm has their own generic name for bastards, though I can only remember “Rivers” as the one for the river lands and “Sands” for the desert region to the south. Sansa and Arya go with Ned so they can learn the ways of the court and gain some polish in polite society. Theon is not actually part of the Stark family, he’s a ward. Basically, to seal treaties or to enforce surrender a child was sometimes given to another house to be raised to ensure good behavior from the other house or to strengthen ties if marriage was not an acceptable option. The Night's Watch used to be a very honorable profession with a noble calling, but over the years they've basically become a place where the dregs of society are shunted off to. Disgraced knights, lords, criminals, basically people nobody wants around are sent north to join the Night's Watch for life. Recruiting parties basically went to each lord's castle and asked for anybody they had in their dungeons, and nobels who did bad things were often given the option of either death or banishment to the wall.

Have you watched Nikki and Steven's reactions to this show (if not they're amazing). Nikki was even more sensitive than Natalie in that regard, she ended up getting more used to the violence as the show went on. I feel like Natalie will do just fine, she'll have a thicker skin by the end. 💪😤❤️
Natalie - along with 'Winter is Coming' and 'The North Remembers' there's another phrase to keep in mind - It's slightly a spoiler, but the events that cause it are many seasons and characters away, but more that the phrase itself sums up a lot of the series. 'If you thought this has a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.' Don't take any thing, or any person for granted, as this story is both wide and deep.
Hopefully you aren't reading comments, but if you are "Winter is Coming" is the Stark house motto. Both a literal and metaphorical phrase. Winter in this world can last decades so it's scary. Metaphorically, winter is always coming, so always be prepared to handle the worse.
I remember season 1. That was good times. I read the books (all of them that currently exist lol) between season 1 and 2 going live. Loved the brutality of it all. Each house were like a brand, run by their house patron. Their catchy sayings and styles. The characters were strong, striking and believable, and seeing them go head to head was amazing, seeing who would bend or compromise first - or who would break when neither did. Brutal place. I miss the enthusiasm I had for the series in those early days.
Love that you're reacting to this series. Despite the issues with the later seasons, it's still one of the best TV series to ever air. But you still need to react to the other quintessential Joss Whedon series besides "Firefly". And that, of course, is "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer". EDIT: It is quite a commitment to react to, but it's worth it. Just fly through the first season. It's a bit of a mess. But it gets AMAZING thereafter.
@@electric.nachos I think we all have. Though the revelations of a toxic work environment shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who was paying attention. It's just the first time that allegations of an abusive workplace weren't brushed aside.
"What is a dire wolf? How is that different?" In real life? A long-extinct species of wolf that was on the large side for wolves, around the size of the largest gray wolves that exist today. In fantasy, however, "dire" is commonly a prefix used to distinguish a breed/species of beast that is exceptionally large compared to their more normal cousins. Adult dire wolves in Game of Thrones can grow to be as large as a small horse, for instance.
Unfortunately the showrunners chose to focus the FX budget on the dragons, so the direwolves are very diminished in the show compared to the books, in terms of both stature _and_ screen time.
A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, Nat got squicked out when she discovered our handsome blond protagonist had kissed his sister, and I laughed at the thought of us getting to this moment. 😂
The planet they live on has a wobble so season can last for many years at a time. That is why they say winter is coming because it is extreme for them.
One thing to know about this series is that decent amounts of time pass in between seasons, episodes and even in between scenes within episodes. For example when the Starks learned that the King was riding for Winterfell and then a couple of scenes later the King arrives, pretty much a month had passed between those scenes hence why the wolves were bigger. It just helps to keep that in mind for future episodes and events. :)
Just so you know, in this world, the seasons are irregular. Winter and Summers can lasts YEARS and they do not know in advance how long the season will last. So a long winter = no harvest for a long time. So yes, they hate winter! There's more to it than that, but I don't want to spoil.
Snow is the name that all bastards from the North/Winterfell are given instead of their house name. Each major city or realm has their own "bastard name" like rivers, stone, hill, etc.. "Winter is coming" is the house moto of the Starks, each major house has one that's repeated to symbolize what their house embodies, "fire and blood" for targaryens, "hear me roar" for lannisters, "we light the way" for the hightowers, etc..
I highly recommend George R.R. Martin's "The World of Ice and Fire - The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones" as a companion guide to the show. It tells of the history up to King Robert's rebellion, so there are no spoilers. It will clarify most questions about the high families and their lands (including family trees), mythical creatures, some of the events leading into season 1, as well as history back to the 1st men. And the reason his last name is Snow is due to the area he was born, If you are a bastard born in the river lands the last name would be River. If the bastard born in Dorn (which is the south) it is Sands.
i hate to be that guy but the bastard name is actually where you're raised. Jon was born in Dorne but raised in the North so he's a Snow.
@@cooki3th1ef
Incorrect, that isint a constant.
However, whilst Aegor Rivers was raised at Stone Hedge in the riverlands, his half-brother Brynden was also called Rivers, despite having lived at least the first few years of his life with his mother at King's Landing in the crownlands.[21] Prince Oberyn Martell's eight bastard daughters all have the surname Sand, even though the eldest, Obara, lived in Oldtown in the Reach during the earlier years of her life"
@@Blankblank-y1n fym incorrect 😭 ooh wow the rule that applies 9 times out of ten also happens to have a 1 time out of ten
@@cooki3th1ef
Biggest point, it's not a true rule.

Yeah it does diverge more and more each season. Even before they run out of book material but is much worse when they get past it
I'd say by season two they diverge quite a bit. They follow large plot but start drifting big and those drifts continue on larger.

Ironically, in the opening scene, the "intern" is the guy in charge. The skinny guy who survives (sort of) is the expert scout, which is why he keeps going off alone.
She wasn't entirely wrong though. If memory serves, he had been there much less time than the others. Was only in charge because of who his daddy was.
@Leon Russell No, Gared was the veteran. Yes, he'd been there the longest, but Wil, who got away on the show, but was decapitated by Ned, was the expert scout, because he had been a poacher before coming the Wall, a job which used the same skillset. Ser Waymar, the son of Lord Yohn Royce, was the "intern" as it were, the newest guy, getting a training command mission. Gared, who was killed on the show and decapitated by Ned in the books, is not a particular expert, he's just an experienced fighter there to possibly advise Royce.
@@danelmore6553 Yeah, but she was calling the guy who got away "the intern". The lordling was in charge because of who his dad was, but he was still learning on the job.
Storm, Stone, Flowers, Blackfyre.

Love that you're reacting to this series. Despite the issues with the later seasons, it's still one of the best TV series to ever air. But you still need to react to the other quintessential Joss Whedon series besides "Firefly". And that, of course, is "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer".

"What is a dire wolf? How is that different?"
In real life? A long-extinct species of wolf that was on the large side for wolves, around the size of the largest gray wolves that exist today.
In fantasy, however, "dire" is commonly a prefix used to distinguish a breed/species of beast that is exceptionally large compared to their more normal cousins. Adult dire wolves in Game of Thrones can grow to be as large as a small horse, for instance.
Unfortunately the showrunners chose to focus the FX budget on the dragons, so the direwolves are very diminished in the show compared to the books, in terms of both stature _and_ screen time.
