When my kids were in their teens I would put a out a big plate of veggies and dip on the table while I cooked dinner. My 3 boys and their friends would gravitate to the table via the smell of food cooking and eat all the veg while chatting about their day. It was a win win..they ate all their veg before dinner and I learned a lot about their day without asking a single question...lol
I never forced my kids to eat anything. My parents didn't teach me to eat vegetables, and I didn't want that for my kids. Their first foods were green veggies, followed by yellow, followed by brown rice, followed by beans, and finally, fruit. I didn't buy any junk food. Nobody was required to eat anything when we ate a meal. However, I only made enough real food (including beans, vegetables, whole grains, etc) for the meal. Also, they weren't allowed to eat other things if they didn't like the meal. Once or twice each two-year-old tried me on the rule. I didn't budge but was kindly firm that they could eat the next meal. Generally, they all ate everything I had prepared. We never catered to tyrannical, mono-diet, junk food childishness. My Mexican friend from Mexico City asked how I got my child to eat traditional Mexican food. I told her that my kids learned to eat what was served, or they went hungry until the next meal. You know, not one of my five children died of hunger. They all went shopping with me every week and started to learn to cook as toddlers. They were lean, fit, healthy, and adventurous eaters as children.
This is a great way to feed kids! I need to stop buying junk food. My husband will argue with me but, he can have a stash in truck then! I know for sure, I buy too many sugary foods. The next time I go Shopping, I am Revamping my food. Thanks!
It’s going ok. One night, instead of making a certain vegetable as a side to dinner, I listed off all of the vegetables we had in the house. I told The kids that they didn’t have to eat the broccoli IF they choose a vegetable that they will eat. My daughter chose carrots raw. My one son chose pickled banana peppers and cucumber slices in a vegan ranch and the other 2 stuck with steamed broccoli. It seemed to work better if I gave them choices. I also Made sure they ate fruit. As far as snacking, we are pretty much down to popcorn, pretzels, seasoned almonds, granola bars( homemade) and tortilla chips. We had 3 bags from birthday parties a few weeks back. They eat those with salsa or hummus or plain.
@@melindalachapell4478 My goodness, you are making some forward steps with them. I hope they understand you're doing this for their good and in return notice how much better they feel for all the effort you are putting in to it.
“Train up a child in the way he should go; Even when he is old he will not depart from it” Proverbs 22:6 Not really speaking about food exclusively but works there too. Daniel was healthier than all those eating the best food available by eating vegetables.
I gave all my children fresh fruits and vegetables right away. I always had lots of beautiful colored fruits and veg all around the house. I used to catch my son licking the broccoli florets and he could eat entire containers of blueberries when hungry. We drank plant milk, ate lentils and soy. Everything was great until they went to school. Then it fell apart. I have one child who now as a grown up has come back to plant based nutrition and I am hopeful the others will follow. Good health everyone!
Great interview! This reminds me of the school food segment in the documentary “Where to Invade Next”. He interviews elementary age students at a School in France, and their attitudes demonstrate the stark contrast resulting from a different cultural view. Their reactions to his description of a typical American school lunch are priceless.
I hope it’s not too late! I have 2 grandsons 11 & 13…..they have horrible diets….one wants junk food/fast food, and the other has (as he explains) an eating disorder! You can count on one hand the foods that he will accept…..PLEASE HELP 🤞🏽
Thank you for your perspective, Dr. Bowman and empowering your patients. I am encouraged to hear your story and conviction about feeling ungrateful. We can all learn from this. Please come back on the show! I want to hear more about plant based eating for kids and kids health! Thank you!!
Intelligent, spiritual, and engaging! Dr. Bowman is the whole package. Why can't I find a physician like him in my area? By the way, he does not look 51!
I am trying my best to go completely plant base Iwould say I’m 85% there and feeling good and eventually I’ll get closer to the goal. Thanks for all your videos. 👍❤️😊
I love this so much!! I was just having a meltdown the other night because, my kids wouldn’t eat what I made. They also won’t eat vegetables very often either. I felt/ feel like a horrible mom! That is a good point about “ who buys the food”. Will they eventually eat if they are hungry enough?
This is a great interview. It’s important to learn nutrition and we can often make things tasty without making them unhealthy. We use real maple syrup and small amount of butter for example on kids waffles/pancakes, but the key is I’ll buy the whole grain flours, and use those with eggs, coconut oil, and a few other ingredients and voila, healthy and pretty tasty. They get fiber in, don’t really object. But I started it very early. My parents never really impressed upon my siblings or I nutritious habits growing up. I never saw my dad eat a fruit. I’ve chosen to go a different way. I eat 3-5 servings of each a fruit or veggie per day, mix of whole and canned. Buy a good blender cheap if you can find one and that will be a great friend for getting skins in for the really young ones.
How do I stop thinking about food all the time. I am mostly vegan , do eat lentils, beans. No process foods. But I am eating constantly after 1 pm. Please help.
Make sure you’re eating enough. Plant based food is much less calorie dense than the standard American diet. Maybe eat more starches like potatoes and rice and grains. Just keep them plant based! Don’t load them up with butter and oils and cheese etc.! Whole grains and starches will fill you up and be more satiating than just veggies.

I use to add shredded zucchini and carrots to my spaghetti sauce. They never noticed.
