    I had P0456 on my 2009 Corolla. Tried gas cap and purge valve. Neither worked. Replaced the charcoal canister and it fixed the problem. Been 6 months now and no light. Bought it on Amazon for about $225.00 at that time. Was very easy to install. I promise you can do it yourself. I know nothing about cars. UA-cam helped me a ton, but even this one is plug and play. You just need a jack, jack stands and some basic tools and you can do it yourself. I more recently had P0441 come on and I replaced the purge valve and that resolved that problem too. Hope this helps!

    This problem can be caused by a small leak in the evaporative emission canister...not uncommon at all as they are plastic. the leak can often be found at the bottom of the canister where the seam is, and can be repaired by using epoxy or sometimes superglue to fill the crack. Don't fall into the habit of replacing parts you don't know are bad with new parts...soon you will have a garage full of good parts you don't have a use for.

      the dealer tells us the purge valve is bad $ 50 the canister you speak of is $350. Toyota and their emissions system have become money pits!! what a POS and too many sensors!!

    Due to cold weather for some reason when I popped the gas thing(metal cover) to fill up my tank it wouldn't open. So I kept trying to use the lever in the car and tried to pry at the metal door outside a bit. (1999 corolla)
    I've had stuck locks in the past due to cold weather but never with the gas cap/door. Maybe I messed something up because a few days later the check engine light went on and now I have code p0441.
    Maybe I'll order a new gas cap and see if that fixes it. The other fixes would be more expensive so I guess it's worth a try.
    Thanks for the tip, hopefully this is a cheap fix.

      This has happened to me twice in the past but both times were my fault because I forgot to tighten down the gas cap enough. In those cases however the check engine light went on right away, this time it went on after 2-3 days of gassing up.
      I re tightened the cap the other day and after driving around for the day the light went off again. So maybe the gas cap is slightly damaged or something. Might be worth spending the money on a new one just in case it is the cause.

    Hi.. the engine code will be erased it self after you change the cap and driving a while or need to be erased with an scanner? Thanks

  • @Otherguy04
    @Otherguy04 7 років тому +3

    Why erase the code? Wouldn't the code disappear after the replacement of the gas cap??

    • @DIYtime
      @DIYtime  7 років тому +4

      +Otherguy04
      Yes, codes will disappear after certain amount of driving cycles if they were caused by bad gas cap, but it may take a while (40 cycles I believe...)
      I like to erase codes to see if they come back in case it wasn't issue with gas cap, than I would look for problem somewhere else.

    • @dougsullivan9324
      @dougsullivan9324 5 років тому +1

      it would take 40 drive cycles w/o detecting a problem for the codes to erase

      You have to erase the codes yourself.

    I have a Toyota Camry 2007 Hybrid. The gas pedal can sometimes randomly become unresponsive while driving. The car still has power and everything else works, but it will not accelerate and slowly glide to an eventual halt as if it were on neutral. No unusual sound or anything when I press on the pedal, just zero acceleration. If I pull over and restart the car, everything becomes normal again. This happens a few times a day. Any idea what it could be? The dashboard is showing check vsc and hybrid system. I also checked the obd but the only codes that showed were regarding battery replacement.
    Thanks!

      Check and clean MAF sensor .
      I had the same problem on a 2007 prius , changing the fuel pump relay fixed the problem (this is very uncommon to go bad) I spoke to a mechanic that works on the city priusus he sees a few a day, he never had that problem

      All three error code could be (and most commonly) generated as a result of a worn out gas cap seal. However, those error codes are not exclusively related to a bad gas cap issue.

  • @brianmohan9303

    Nope. Don't reset codes. If you have fixed the problem, the car will reset code. Dumb idea, and this video isn't any help diagnoseing these problems. Waste of time.

      It’s fine. If it doesn’t fix the problem, codes will come back.
      As far as video being helpful, maybe its not all inclusive, sure, I agree. I just shared what I found and what fixed the problem for me. Apparently it helped many others too. What actually dumb in my opinion is not lifting a finger at all to help others and trashing others who at least tried.

      Brian "the brain" Moron apparently does not realize that the fault will reappear if the problem still exists, instead of waiting for up to a few days for the error to clear or conversely, to reappear.
