Can someone anatomically explain to me how lats move the weight in a bench press? I get they keep you tight, I get that a thick back reduces ROM. I do not get how the back actually helps shift weight.
The lats don't move the weight, they just stabilize. It's old school thinking from geared lifting that lats strength carries over to bench press. So it's not a surprise that a westside guy recommends it. In a bench shirt you need to actually pull the weight down and the eccentric can be extremely difficult, lats are really important. For raw lifters they just aren't, not to this degree. Look for Greg Nuckols article going over this misconception

My guess is Simeon Panda and Jeff Seid can both squat and bench more than you Lewis, but that doesn't mean you should suddenly take their advice as godsend, just because they can lift more than you. Theres plenty of moron meatheads out there who can lift heavy, but the great coaches who understand training and how the body works are far between. Also lets not forget theres a lot of better benchers than him, who doesn't do what he does. So who is right? The guy who can lift more or the person who is smarter?
Mikkel Jørgensen 300kg deadlift. 240kg squat and a 170kg bench in competition natural I think I beat them....im not saying whatever he preaches is godsend but he is a top level lifter and he benched 500lb naturally before getting on the juice. what he says is relevant though. every top level bencher have huge lats and triceps.

Purposely creating muscle imbalances is a great way to get injuries instead of preventing injuries. Your blaming the bench press for injury when you should be blaming your self the lack of mobility and muscle fatigue your chest has is reason why your tearing your pec.
tylersxblacc It's much much harder to get issues with having an overdeveloped back than an over developed chest and front delt
Basic biomechanics explains why the Bench is a tricep dominant exercise. Having a big back and triceps reduces the load on the chest and shoulders. It's unlikely that you could bench with only a big chest and shoulders.
tylersxblacc idk about that if you go around, any big bencher they allways say the same. Your back and arms can't be strong enough but if you get your chest too strong it can over take your bench and you'll tear shit up.
that's why they all do arm movements. Big chest comes as your bench gets bigger. You just want to make sure your back volume is 2X your pressing volume. And the majority of your pressing is triceps oriented.
