You explaining the width issue explains 100% of my shoulder problems, the knuckle position explains 100% of my wrist pain issue, thanks Matt.

Spotter bars should be a legal requirement on all bench stations.

This is an excellent video. I hurt my shoulders because I was doing it the wrong way.

You hit the nail on the head Matt! Well said. It’s Very important to *lower the weight* when learning to bench properly.
I was a mid-300 bencher but I knew it wasn’t correct. I spent a weekend with JM Blakley and he completely changed how I bench. Back home, it took me roughly 9 months to get over 185 utilizing what JM taught me. It was beyond frustrating. I hated bench day. It felt as though I wasn’t progressing at all. Honestly, in one day it felt like everything just fell into place. When I finally got back to over 315 it felt like butter! It didn’t feel like the 315 from a year ago.
Very important tip Matt! Cannot be overstated.
    🇺🇸💪🏼

Had to move my hands in to just wider than shoulder width, feels so much better. Years of wide benching and my shoulders could not do it anymore. 51 and still benching and enjoying it.

I flare my elbows out a bit when I bench and do push-ups. I am 6’10” and it is challenging for me because I feel like a need a wider base. Well guess what? I have developed shoulder pain. I am going to drop some weight off the bar and apply these principles. Great channel. Thank you.

Great video. Im trying to get my bench up to 315. Currnetly im around 295 for a real grinder touch and go. When i put 3 plates on the bar it jus crushes me. Whats your thoughts on why 315 is crushing me, besides the obvious of it being a little heavier as a pose to 295 which is only a 20lbs difference. What would u suggest i do to hit my goal weight of 315?

You can bench either way. A lot do straight up and down. Flatter back typically is straight bar path. Higher arch typically an arched bar path and heavy backward leg drive are common. Something to play around with. It's based biomechanics.
