Best lifting content period. Wish I had this type of information 35 years ago when I started lifting. I especially appreciate Matt's focus on staying injury free and maintaining joint health.
I can guarantee no one I know has had the "bench" conversation in the last 20 years. This is an excellent video. I hurt my shoulders because I was doing it the wrong way.
Well, what do you know. I was trying to find something on the bench yesterday and found no proper vid about it from Matt. And now I have what I sought. Thank you mah duuuude!
You hit the nail on the head Matt! Well said. It’s Very important to *lower the weight* when learning to bench properly. I was a mid-300 bencher but I knew it wasn’t correct. I spent a weekend with JM Blakley and he completely changed how I bench. Back home, it took me roughly 9 months to get over 185 utilizing what JM taught me. It was beyond frustrating. I hated bench day. It felt as though I wasn’t progressing at all. Honestly, in one day it felt like everything just fell into place. When I finally got back to over 315 it felt like butter! It didn’t feel like the 315 from a year ago. Very important tip Matt! Cannot be overstated. 🇺🇸💪🏼
Had to move my hands in to just wider than shoulder width, feels so much better. Years of wide benching and my shoulders could not do it anymore. 51 and still benching and enjoying it.
Absolutely incredible information! I’ve been doing my bench wrong I’m definitely going to implement this into my work out thank you for sharing God bless you.🙏🏿
I flare my elbows out a bit when I bench and do push-ups. I am 6’10” and it is challenging for me because I feel like a need a wider base. Well guess what? I have developed shoulder pain. I am going to drop some weight off the bar and apply these principles. Great channel. Thank you.
Love the video.. I have sore shoulder/rotar cuffs. I'm assuming my form is way off particularly in my wrist position and lack of back and lat activation.. Currently benching 140kgs with a close grip to avoid more shoulder damage
Hi @matt, thanks for the videos here and at NSCA. They are really helpful. I have seen you using legs in benching. You have not mentioned anything about them here. It would be nice if you will explain about the importance of legs. Also should the hips lift up while bench.
Great video, thanks. You are a very strong guy so i would like to know how many reps can you do with a ihuniu 100 kg power twister bar . The youtube record is now 20 reps. Thanks.
I don't know why "He's in deep S&*@" made me laugh so hard. Thanks for the content Matt. I've been watching your stuff for years and it's really helped.
Great video. Im trying to get my bench up to 315. Currnetly im around 295 for a real grinder touch and go. When i put 3 plates on the bar it jus crushes me. Whats your thoughts on why 315 is crushing me, besides the obvious of it being a little heavier as a pose to 295 which is only a 20lbs difference. What would u suggest i do to hit my goal weight of 315?
Can you make video about low bar squat and shoulders mobility or T-spine mobility on low bar squat? Or problems with shoulders / elbows on low bar squats :D Btw. I hope you will be active on youtube as you are now...nice videos! :D
I use a suicide grip. I feel it keeps me in better alignment. Am I losing gains because of this?? My forearms feel tight but could I be losing something ?
I recently bought a Thompson fat pad because I’ve got broad shoulders but now my feet barely touch the floor and I’m getting no leg drive while benching. Any way to remedy this or did I waste $180 on the pad?
WitheredSerenity I have same bench, the feet at bottom are annoying but I find if move either higher or lower on bench you move your feet around the base of the bench
Slightly pass shoulder width, thumb bed on knerling, thos that lift the longest get the strongest, squeeze hand and "punch", keep shoulder blades pinched, don't use weights you cannot technically Master.
You can bench either way. A lot do straight up and down. Flatter back typically is straight bar path. Higher arch typically an arched bar path and heavy backward leg drive are common. Something to play around with. It's based biomechanics.
You explaining the width issue explains 100% of my shoulder problems, the knuckle position explains 100% of my wrist pain issue, thanks Matt.
See ya supporting patreon 🏆🏆🏆
Spotter bars should be a legal requirement on all bench stations.
Glad to see you mention them here.

Hey man, I follow your advice and this morning, for the first time in many years I actually felt my pectoral muscles working.
Thank you so much.
"using the wrong muscles to bench", is my life story, delts are screwed; will have to try these once i can bench again, thx Matt!

So the bar path is straight up?😊 I'm asking, because advice on that seems to vary. The grip width and tightening my lower arms is definitely helpful.

Bar goes straight up and down? Now I'm confused, since everyone says the bar path should be diagonally away from chest... And what about leg drive?

Great video i just wish you would have gone over the legs in his bench too. Teach how to create tension and more leg drive

WitheredSerenity put plates on the floor so your feet can get that leg drive. Like Ed coans bench
WitheredSerenity I have same bench, the feet at bottom are annoying but I find if move either higher or lower on bench you move your feet around the base of the bench
That’s why I made my bench 💪💪💪
I do all of those things but my shoulder still hurts, it hurts more when i do benchpress than when I do military press or something like that...

Why teach “bar straight down and straight up”? Isn’t the bench bar path supposed be more of a ramp?
That confuses me as well.
Depends on what you're trying to achieve
Yeah bro most powelifters bench kinda resembles a J
