This is such an important video for me and so many women suffering from hair loss - thank you for doing it and giving us some answers and guidance. The confusion, shame and fear is real. My sister is preparing to go into chemo treatments in a few days and is facing the loss of her hair. This advice about treating the scalp carefully is sure to be helpful when she is finished with treatment and is hoping for regrowth of hair. I have thick, healthy hair so don’t struggle with the problems identified, but I appreciate hearing about real issues driving hair loss and the health of the hair.
A diet high in processed sugar? Very surprised Ian didn't mention that, as it is inflammatory and affects insulin which is a hormone which in turn can affect the hair. I do believe inflammation plays a role in hair loss
I went to see this trichologist on the strength of this video (even though I'm a guy) and I was not disappointed. He gave me a correct diagnosis and took a huge weight of my shoulders. I had previously seen another trichologist who told me I had alopecia, which I was doubtful about. Thank you so much Nadine!
Nadine, you have just literally saved not only my fine and fragile hair, but also the vast amounts of money that I spend on the so called supplement, shampoos/conditions that are supposed to help, My eyes have been opened by an expert, and for that, I thank you. (And so does my bank account). Now off to see if the supplements are available in downtown Australia. Probably not, as always grrrrrr. Brilliant video thank you so very much.
This was super interesting, thank you for using your platform to talk about this. Also appreciate how down to earth and honest your guest was, not pushing expensive products and just saying what actually in his opinion makes an effect.
I have very fine thin hair, and I personally find having highlights makes it appear thicker particularly on top which is the area I’m most conscious about. It also blends in more with the scalp!
Very informative. I'd suggest for the interviewer to interrupt less as it was a bit distracting. I appreciate that you asked about vegetarians and vegans. As a vegetarian, it's really difficult to get the right nutrition, and it's such an important part of hair health. Also appreciate that you asked about the cost.

Ohhhh im so glad for this. I have fine and thinning hair. First started losing lots of hair in my teens and its quite noticeable on my crown which i am self conscious about. The hair loss slowed down but recently it has started again...20 years later. When i comb my hair a lot falls out and its noticeable as i dont have much hair
I did not believe anything could repair hair, until I used Olaplex. And not even the no. 1 and 2; only the no.3. My literally fried hair (zig zagged ends, burnt hair) was all fine after just one use. I would never have believed such a thing could be true, unless I saw it with my own eyes. This was in 2016 and I have been repurchasing since then. Note that I had no high hopes at all. Also note that the damage was recent; it was not cumulative damage from years or months before. I used it very generously and on dry hair, saturating thoroughly, I kept it on for 24 hours wrapped in cling film, reapplying as needed. I could not stop inspecting my hair after I washed it off, it was unbelievable. And no, the effect is permanent, it does not wash off, because it's not a cosmetic fix that clings to your hair to make it look better. This was my experience with the product, but I had made my first purchase after thorough research. . I would've expected to hear about Olaplex in this conversation, but it was very informative nevertheless. Thank you Nadine and thank you Ian 😊
Olaplex is incredible. It’s really helped me too. Best applied to wet hair so the product can help to rebond the cuticle and you can continually dampen the hair as you leave in the product to help keep it working. This will yield even better results. Hope this helps 😊
Thank you for sharing this. I am a hairdresser and get askrd these questions alot. I have always been interested in finding out the root cause. So i can now imform my clients a bit better. Will def follow him
Thank you. Great video. When I quit coloring my hair, it got thicker quickly. Thanks for not recommending shampoo and conditioner brands. Healthy protein in my diet and a well balanced supplement has also helped.
Nadine, 2 questions for you: 1) Are there any recommendations for a Hair Jelly substitute that’s available in the US? It doesn’t look like Hair Jelly ships outside of the UK. 2) Where did you get that jacket with the star fabric liner?!?? It’s absolutely adorable!!!
I have loads of problems with my scalp. I get really greasy hair very quickly. Is that something that a trichologist or a dermatologist should look at? Thanks. By the way.... he is amazing! Thank you for the no nonsense! And not trying to sell us loads of rubbish!
Same here. If i wash my hair in the morning it goes lank 12 hours later so if im going out i need to rewash it or else it will be greasy. Theres no way i could leave it days to cleanse itself and dry shampoo isnt good on dark hair.

I am currently going to the Philip Kingsley salon in London. I can highly recommend it. Their prices are not cheap but worth every penny . They diagnosed me with female pattern baldness and shedding. My hair is growing back and getting a lot thicker.
I was recommended to go to them as well by a stylist. My hair has started to thin a little. Have they put you on medication or supplements to help? If so what is your treatment regimen if you don’t mind sharing? Thanks so much and I’m so happy to hear that you’re having success. 😊
Thank you so much to Ian for sharing this information! Thank you Nadine for asking such wonderful questions! This has been immensely helpful! Thank you again and God bless you both!
I would point out that your GP will not arrange blood tests just because you want to take the results to a Trichologist. There has to be a medical reason why you need them.
That was great. I would so love to go see this guy .. arghhhhh. Thanks Nadine. He more or less confirmed what i thought i knew :) (but i did already pay to see 3 different thricologists in the past)
Interesting vlog I went to a well known trichologists in London which cost nearly £400 for the consultation plus hundreds more to buy the branded products they recommended. I was told to wash my hair every day (using their products) which I believe made it worse. My problem turned out to be hormone/diet related - eat less sugar/carbs and more protein especially eggs which are very nutritious for hair growth. Use natural hair products with no silicones/sulphate/parabans and massage scalp for blood flow.
Interesting. May I ask if this was Philip Kingsley? I was recommended to go there by a stylist but they are big believers in washing hair every day and pushing products I have heard, so I’ve been a bit fearful of going. Thanks for sharing and hope that you’re doing better now.
My ferritin was so low-5, I was losing so much hair. Took iron but it wouldn’t raise my ferritin for some reason. Finally worked with a naturopath dr who got my ferritin to 102 and my hair is so healthy now.
Lisa R - I am interested to know what your naturopath dr did to increase your ferritin level when Iron did not work. I also have this problem as my ferritin level is 6.
My naturopath doctor had me take Dr. Mercola’s liposomal vitamin c. It is different from regular vit c. It doubled my ferritin in 3 months and I’m convinced the low ferritin is why my hair was falling out. I’ve read that ferritin needs to be at least 70 to grow new hair. There are articles online about it. The problem was when I took iron the iron would get dangerously high but the ferritin was still very low. That was when I was using a typical western doctor. I decided to go to the naturopath doctor and he has healed a lot of other stuff as well. My hair is so much better, healthy, stronger- not breaking and frizzy.
I had hormone receptor-positive breast cancer and finished “active” treatment 2 years ago. I’m now on hormone therapy (tamoxifen 20mg) so in a kind of chemical menopause, and my hair is much thinner than it was before I started chemotherapy on the top of my head (strangely the hair on the back and sides of my head is as thick as it was before) and I’ve just had 2 major reconstructive surgeries which resulted in a loss of blood and anaemia. I have lost a whole lot more hair as a result and now have a bald patch on my crown, which is so upsetting because it had only just grown back from chemo! However, the anaemia and blood loss is on it’s way to being resolved. My question is: does tamoxifen have the effect of hair loss or thinning? And if so, once I have finished my 5 or 10 year treatment (by which time I will be about 47), can I expect my hair to grow back or is the effect likely to be permanent?
Hi Jenny. I have been on tamoxifen as well in the same situation. It is almost impossible to predict what happens afterwards because it depends on your personal hormone situation. I will say that overcoming anemia helped a lot with my hair. And after that I have been very careful to get enough protein and calsium in my diet so that my hair and even more importantly my bones stay strong. I suggest eating as healthy as possible (Mediterranean diet) and trying supplements. Your body has gone through a lot and it will take time to reach a balance. Stay positive.
Tiiti thank you for taking the time to reply! I am eating a Mediterranean diet, and I think (hope) the level of protein and calcium I have in my diet are good. Maybe I can ask the doctor for blood tests to check these the next time I visit. Thanks again! Xxx
The worst thing is going to doctors for help and advice and having them not take it seriously. Once my thyroid tested normal, it's now passed off as a purely a cosmetic concern related to "unavoidable" factors and ignored. Does Ian make house calls? ;)
@@itsacarolbthing5221 Oh I did that. Many times. Derms are the same. ‘Bloodwork okay? Sorry, can’t help you.’ Luckily I found help from a hairstylist on TikTok!
Ian thankyou...you have given me hope. I had been told all the myths about not colouring hair etc and you are completely right....its a double blow to have hairloss but then be restricted in what styling you can do with your hair. Was also worried about the cost of visiting a trichologist but if it could only mean a couple of appointments that would be ok. Do you know of a good trichologist in northern ireland?
OMG that's why I had thinning hair at the front of my head I never realised that getting the coil removed resulted in my hair going back to normal until now
Michelle S omg I’m on merena coil now for almost 5 years, and ever since my hair has been shedding like crazy. I had such thick hair and now it’s less than half. It’s due to be replaced, but I’m now going to remove it. It’s now hubbys turn to be snipped. We’re done having kids.
@@bakhtawarsidhwa yes mine was merena coil they didnt tell me hair thinning and loss was a possible side effect I'm glad I got it removed it all makes sense now 👍
@@billie5057 absolutely yes it did but I was always puzzled as to why it went through that phase now I know it can't be anything I have always had a healthy diet and enough B vitamins so don't worry 😁👍
Always had thick hair but since hitting 50 it was coming out in handfuls to the point it was blocking the plug. Since taking high dose daily Omega 3 I have noticed a huge reduction in hair loss but it did take at least 3/4 months.
Hi. I got bloods and went to a tricologist. My iron levels were low (17) and so she recommended iron supplements. I am taking Galfer and notice a big difference. My question is she also recommended the following treatments. They cost €600 for 10 sessions. I am half way though and haven’t noticed any additional improvements. Do you think the following treatments have benefits or are faff: Laser treatment to stimulate growth and encourage vasodilation, medication topically applied area used in combination with UVA light and scalp massage to encourage blood flow.
Hi Nadine I have Alopecia, I am 53yrs old and this only started last year, I have been to the doctors and got steroid creams and also have bought every expensive product out there.I have always had fabulous thick hair but now it's awful and not good.
When my hair loss was extreme, I started using natural progesterone cream and my hair stopped falling out in big clumps. I only use a few hairs with each wash now.
Thank you. Did you use this day 14 on til your period if you are premenopausal? I just started from ovulation to my period as my progesterone is low and I have a luteal phase defect. Fingers crossed 🤞
@@PandaA-cv3mm I used progesterone cream for PMS when I was younger. Now, I apply it because I am post menopausal and am not on HRT. I would research progesterone use by Dr. John R Lee, M.D., since he's the expert on the topic. That's what I did before I started using it.
I am so frustrated I lived in The USA my blood tests showed borderline thyroid issues and I was given medication that really helped my hair skin and many other issues. NHS "OH there is nothing wrong you are just borderline." Minoxidil burned my scalp.
Question: conditioner and Hairmask on the scalp or not on the scalp? For me it makes sense to apply on the scalp as it's skin and my skin is dehydrated. But I keep hearing people telling you only on the length...
I use nioxin shampoo and conditioner; it improved the health of my scalp and helped me hugely when I got stress alopecia; my hair grew back covering the patches and fine areas of hair loss . Now I have a fabulous head of hair and my hairdresser is amazed.
Maybe a little off topic, I have natural curly hair but after I bleached it a year ago I tend to have loser curls. Even now a year after, all the bleached hair are gone the curls are gone too. Is there any solution to that?
Thank you for such a useful video. I've finally gotten the answer I was looking for. I've suffered from androgenic alopecia since I was 14 years old. I've undergone various dermalogical treatments which include PRP, minoxidil, biotin supplements and consuming iron-rich food. however, the condition recurred once the treatments ended. looks like I need to take anti-androgenic medication among other things.
If you are having real hair problems, stop coloring and bleaching. Sometimes more hair is more youthful than a nice color. At least grow it out to recover then be very conservative with color after it’s back to it’s natural state. I stopped coloring for 2 years and I feel like I have my hair back!
Be careful with the red meat, processed meat is a class 1 carcinogen same as plutonium and non processed meat is class 2 a possible carcinogen. Great interview Nadine, I have thin hair and love the Tangle teaser line! X
Its a pity every 'solution' costs so much. Taking some recommended supplements cost far too much per month and need to be taken on an ongoing basis. Unrealistic for a lot of people. (Im not specifically meaning the ones Ian mentioned. All treatments whether it be specialist shampoos etc are all so high for the average person to justify spending or to even afford on a regular basis)

Does Ian make house calls? ;)
You can ask your GP for a referral to a dermatologist.
@@bakhtawarsidhwa yes mine was merena coil they didnt tell me hair thinning and loss was a possible side effect I'm glad I got it removed it all makes sense now 👍
@@billie5057 absolutely yes it did but I was always puzzled as to why it went through that phase now I know it can't be anything I have always had a healthy diet and enough B vitamins so don't worry 😁👍
brilliant interview, iain is fab ;-), I have finner hair with menopause, will look into the jelly capsules
I am a menopausal woman, started thinning since I was 35 yr, had very straight hair, now it's gone curly, coarse and thinning on top, what to do?
Brilliant interview. So informative. 👌👌👌
What a jolly nice chap.
Always had thick hair but since hitting 50 it was coming out in handfuls to the point it was blocking the plug. Since taking high dose daily Omega 3 I have noticed a huge reduction in hair loss but it did take at least 3/4 months.
Emily Lane that’s interesting about omega 3
Nadine, don’t you want to update your retinoic acid hardcore journey?! I’d love to hear it! Tks! You’re great!!!
I suffer with hashimotos hairloss, blood results are fine now medicated but hair still thinning
what can you use to protect sun damage? do the thermal protectors do anything or is it a waste of time?
Sassybanjo Thank you so much. Yes I know a bit about him. I’ll research it further for sure. You’re the best! Thanks and have a lovely weekend;)
Panda1122 A You’re welcome!! Have a great weekend!!
This has been so interesting. Thank you for posting this!
I am so frustrated I lived in The USA my blood tests showed borderline thyroid issues and I was given medication that really helped my hair skin and many other issues. NHS "OH there is nothing wrong you are just borderline." Minoxidil burned my scalp.
Long term vegan females I know do have thin hair. 2 of them lost a massive amount of hair after giving birth. Im not sure if they saw an MD about it.
Wonder what he thinks of hair extensions on older fine hair.
Question: conditioner and Hairmask on the scalp or not on the scalp? For me it makes sense to apply on the scalp as it's skin and my skin is dehydrated. But I keep hearing people telling you only on the length...
Excellent interview. Any chance we could get a list of fragrance and color free drugstore shampoos?
Tiiti neutrogena, Simple, Philip Kingsley x
Brilliant ! Thank you so much for this interview :)
Thank you very much. I needed to see this video Xx
Great interview, so interesting. Thank you.
Let him speak!
Thank you so much for this. It was so needed!
Hi Nadine, so informative did I hear him right head massage does not help to grow your hair longer.?
@Miss Tiddleywinks yeah maybe
Wow! Thank you both 🙏
Wish i could ask him if nioxin actually works. ?
@@minooverdi5459 Is there a particular Biotin dosage that's recommended for good results, or does it differ person to person...?
Lisa Cridhe No it is just One tablet a day. I get mine from EBay For about £4.70 for 30tablets.
14:45 listen closely, those type of products are mentioned.
I use nioxin shampoo and conditioner; it improved the health of my scalp and helped me hugely when I got stress alopecia; my hair grew back covering the patches and fine areas of hair loss . Now I have a fabulous head of hair and my hairdresser is amazed.
@@LadyBahama waw amazing! I always recommend it but have never hesrd of any success stories. So thank you for sharing yours. Thata great xx
The volume is very low.
Has anyone purchased his product or received treatment or a consultant from him ?
If so, did you see positive results ?
Maybe a little off topic, I have natural curly hair but after I bleached it a year ago I tend to have loser curls. Even now a year after, all the bleached hair are gone the curls are gone too. Is there any solution to that?
More more, thank you for this excellent information. XoX
If ferritin is low, what supplements to take
Thank you so much for this video.❤️❤️
Very informative! Thank you !
You didn’t ask him about olaplex
Ali 07 he is not a fan but I really am x
Thanks Nadine great help ❤️💐😘🍀💄🛍
Be careful with the red meat, processed meat is a class 1 carcinogen same as plutonium and non processed meat is class 2 a possible carcinogen. Great interview Nadine, I have thin hair and love the Tangle teaser line! X
I’m a veggie have been for over 30 years and I take buckthorn oil tablets and my hair and nails are great I also take a vitamin tablet daily.
The Phillip Kingsley shampoo has SLS in it?
Thanks for the video, but honestly, getting your protein as a vegan is not an issue.
Some evidence that scalp PRP can help
Fantastic video. 😚
Great video so informative xxxx
Love this guy !
I remember my mum eating a cube of jelly daily.
this was brilliant, so helpful!! thx to you both!!
What drugs cause hair loss?
Sound is unbearable. I wish I could listen to the whole piece, but I can't. Sorry.
Lulu Manu aircon buzz I’m afraid but worth it if you can put up with it x
I'm with you Lulu Manu. Can't hear damn thing, compounded by a foreign accent. I literally couldn't hear the key word in certain conversations ( ex: "A lot of hair loss is due to ???????? Inaudible). Very upsetting as I need this information 💔
@@NadineBaggott Are you guys using lav microphones? The echo and the aircon definitely make the audio terrible. Very good info just wish the sound was better quality.
