As a mention: immediately after this song, Bo stands up and explains to everyone: "Don't kill yourself. I don't like explaining jokes, but this one felt like it deserved an explanation."
I really don’t think this song should be watched without the parts before, where he sets up the context, and after, where he apologizes immediately and explains the song again. As Bo says on stage verbatim, “I think the song where I tell you to kill yourself warrants an explanation”
I mean, he explains it mid song as well, I've never ever had the context pre and post song and I understand it's a joke because even the lyrics of the song say it's a joke and not to take songs seriously
@@zach1972 yes but you are not everyone and we clearly aren't looking out for you. Shouldn't be controversial to be overly clear that people shouldn't commit suicide. People care and it takes little effort, and clearly doesn't run the comedic moment, to clarify.
It proves his point though, context shouldnt be needed. If people take advice from entertainers (all be it there is good advice and great songs out there that do serve that purpose) then they are in the wrong direction and could be led to take the wrong advice.
Bo became my favorite comedian after this. He had the BALLS to write a song telling people to off themselves, did it in front of audiences, and had a point to go along with it, with a moral to be learned. What a bit man.
FYI, the context you missed before this song was about how pop stars try to maintain their audience on an emotional level and he thinks that's an overreach on their part. He talks about how they make these big songs like Brave and Roar to tell audiences how they should handle difficult circumstances, but how those songs aren't helpful. Just like this song is extremely unhelpful advice if you're depressed (except for the middle section where he gets serious for a minute). The last thing he tells the audience before he starts singing is essentially, "If you're going through a rough time, don't listen to songs like this."
I love how you understood it before he even explained himself. Was fun watching you realized what he might be doing and then seeing how you were right.
I love the last chorus where he just names off thing after thing. Every...single...person, no matter how offended or off-put by the things being said, ALWAYS laughs at something in there. The Oprah one got me too. :D
Weirdly enough I think this song is what finally inspired me to eventually go to therapy and get my wife to go to therapy. He does tell you to kill yourself a whole lot but he also makes getting help seem simple and normal by comparison.
He guessed exactly why he wrote this song. You are right. It was a satirical version of pop songs that sing about the opposite end of the spectrum. He even referenced two songs that do this. He said "You shouldn't just Be Brave, you shouldn't just Roar." It's paper-thin advice that doesn't really help depressed people at all. But maybe doing the opposite will? Clearly it won't help, but at least laughing for a temporary amount time at the absurdity of the song can do better than Katy Perry's lyrics.
I've been waiting for this one 😅 one of my favorites. Doesn't get reacted to much. Maybe it's hard to monetize? 🤣 Also if you watch the 3 minutes before and after this song on the special, there's a ton of context. Basically it's satire.
Here's my issue with you censoring things like "suicide" and "kill yourself", it gives the impression that it's not a subject to be talked about. If you censor "fuck" you've done so because it's just an offensive term. When you censor "suicide" you're doing so because someone doesn't want that topic to be discussed. Which means people who feel like it's an option for them are being told that they definitely should not talk about it. It basically tells people exactly what Maynard says in The Outsider, "If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere, do it somewhere far away from here!" If you want to help people not be suicidal, don't tell them they can't talk about it.
@@trumanwalls3668 I mean, I know he's the one who did the censoring, but he did it because he didn't want his video to get age restricted, not because he believes people shouldn't talk about suicide.
@@Bluhbear So there's no age restriction attached to a song that at face value repeatedly tells you to commit suicide, and provides multiple ways to do it before the explanation, so long as you censor the actual words "suicide" and "kill yourself". I'm sorry that this was the video that was sent to you - there are others out there that give much better context for this song (by better I mean any at all). Kudos to you for figuring it out anyway.
he always without fail chooses the worst live version, rather than better versions even if it ruins the experience or doesn't sound decent. It sucks but what can you do, he's dug in on choosing the worst versions.
This video left out the intoduction when Bo explains how he's not there to solve anyone's problems though a song, like Brave or Roar. He's just there to entertain. He says, "Don't listen to a song...like this-", then he takes off.
I learned the other day that Tom Lehrer made all his satirical music from the 50s and 60s public domain. Might be worth looking into, he's kind of the prototype for the modern musical comedian, and you wouldn't have to worry about copyright. Songs like We Will All Go Together When We Go, Poisoning Pigeons In The Park, The Masochism Tango, etc.
This is out of context of his setup of the song and his explanation afterwards. All of his songs mostly are if you only listen to the song, since they’re all written to be heard in context with all of the other things he has to say during the hour long comedy show. He’s a comedian who writes songs, not a musician who does comedy.
This song is so dark but it honestly it does make a very good point. It’s a critique on how we deal with the stigma of mental illness. You were absolutely right when you surmised that Bo was telling you not to take advise from celebrities. I struggle with depression and I have to say that this definitely has to be my favourite song by Bo Burnham. I also think that the point of the song is to highlight the absolute hyperbole of the *ahem* methods to “unalive” yourself. For example: “Nail yourself to a cross” begs the question how on God’s green earth do you do such a thing on your own? You can’t. It’s impossible to nail *yourself* to a cross, though I *STRONGLY advocate AGAINST* trying of course. “Be gay in Iran” is in there because, and I want to be crystal clear that this is not by any means an attack against Iranians it is an indictment of the Iranian government itself, in Iran they have the most gruesome and barbaric punishments if you’re found out to be gay. In Iran the punishments range from being stoned to death to being thrown off of tall building and other’s I don’t even want to think about! 😱 I’m glad you did find a way to post it though. Keep up the awesome work man. Love and respect from a Canadian subscriber!
100% in the top 5 of his songs. On the note of "nail yourself to a cross", well 😅 with the right mechanisms or machine to puncture... I'm not going further with that but you get it 😆 Also I never hear or see anyone comment on the Courtney Love bit at the very end, like that hit so hard for me as a Nirvana fan. Was a mixed bag of emotions afterwards 🤣 And good luck with the struggles bo. Same boat and whatnot
I was worried that you watched the clip without the dialogue in the beginning that kinda explained his point, so I’m glad you were able to pick up on it before he even explained it lol
You had the type of analysis that I did when I first listened to Cont by Tim Minchin. Fun fact, I was exhausted on the road at the time, and the constant question of "where is the bit" is probably what kept me lucid enough to get home safely that night.
It is tasteless, and that's why I like it. I get depressed sometimes and if something can make me laugh, it does a lot more good for me than trying to coax me with superficial cliche advice.
I also noticed that the examples of methods he was giving, and the way he was stating them, were unpleasant and/or de-romanticizing. Some sound really painful, some sound unpleasant to other senses, some sound just plain stupid. Even the arguably "fancy" one with a "silver bullet" is presented as such a ham-fisted joke that it almost seems like you'd be just plain insulting yourself to do that after hearing that. The overall tone and direct "command" would also be likely to spark a rebellion impulse in at least some people; that little bit of "you can't tell me what to do!" And still good that he clarifies what he means - partly because not everyone will have any of the reactions/feelings/thoughts I mentioned above, partly because I'm sure there are those who would fine the jovial "carelessness" and diminishment to be appropriate to how they feel and what their reasoning is, and partly just for his own legal protection.
I feel like you would get more out of these songs if you were to react to the comedy special as a whole. The context between songs and the setups are important and I just think reacting in order and to the special, even broken up into parts, would be a much better way to do this. His songs really do need the context to react properly. It’s not like normal songs from some album.
