Having a cabin in the forest is a never ending battle with maintenance. Every time you leave the forest tries to take back its land.
You are fortunate to have all the equipment and the knowledge to keep up with the forest.

Many abandoned homes were people's, families dreams that have became broken
dreams this says a lot about whats going on in America. Right, left, black, white,
straight, gay and everything else you better unite cause they are coming for all
of you. A people divided is easy to conquer but a people united here and around
the world is a force to be reckoned with just keep and hold on to that thought.

Trees also have a lifespan. When they've reached their end, they start dying. Too bad you don't have a sawmill where you can utilize your own trees to refurbish the place.
The place looks great. You are doing good, hard work.

When you live in places like this, or the Pacific Northwest where I live, you learn to listen for cracking of trees during storms. It happens, no matter how pretty they are, they can be dangerous. People who don't live in these places can't speak from experience. You live and learn. It's looking really good!

I love how it looks without the trees. You can grow hardwood trees later down the road. I say keep cutting until you're happy that the widow makers are gone. This is your property and you have a family to keep safe from old rotten trees. Don't listen to others and think about what's right for you and yours. 💖

I respect what you are doing to clean up the property and maintaining the trees that you can. I don’t agree with all the negative comments about the trees that you are removing. There are reasons why you need to ignore what people with little knowledge about tree safety have to say. As an electrical employee we had to trim back trees in a neighborhood in order to keep the branches away from the power lines. The residents of the neighborhood raised a stink over having their trees cut back. The leadership and our engineers had to have a town hall meeting to convince people why the work had to be done with no avail. That spring we had an ice storm and most of the trees were lost due to ice weighing down on the limbs . Had we cut back the longer branches as intended most of the trees would have been saved from the ice storm and saved the neighborhood days of power outage.

You don’t have to put solar panels on the roof. You can clear some ground near the house, install your panels at or near ground level. Then run the cables to the cottage. That’ll save you from cutting so many trees down in front of the cottage.

Hi from New Zealand, where we also say Eh a lot. The people who sold the 'cottage' will be absolutely stoked at how their baby is again being showed some Love, and that must be gratifying cos they obv had shown the place the love it deserves. I trust you have got to know them, or have they commented here as you do your 'progress reports?' I hope the guys health has stabilised too, what a kick in the gut it musta been when they had the long soul search when Dad was initially diagnosed, and eventually reaching the awful conclusion was no doubt a real blow. On the bright side, Dad is still alive so thats something out of the wreck for him and his mrs id imagine. Dad, should by fluke you read my comment, this owner must be just what you hoped for in a successionist to the lovely hide away you and her got up and cracking. Skills to the pair of you, perhaps when its completed and rentable, you and the wifey might like to go stay for a month or so. One just never knows whats around the corner in this dear wee thing we call Life. God Bless to all involved.

Just a thought. I am a huge fan of the composite deck boards. I lived with them for 2 years, and they are so much nicer to walk on and remove snow from. I would also say go with the clips to secure the boards to the deck (instead of just screwing thru the board).
They do not splinter, rot or need staining or painting.

Like i have said before do the work now so you and your family can enjoy the place latter ! With the place empty for so long it was unloved now it is starting to look loved and care for. I was shocked when you kicked the poles holding up the porch and they crumbled. Since I have no building experience, I would not have thought to do that. You are pretty conscientious. Anyway, recently I started watching videos of young people making videos of abandoned homes, as old as 200 years old, but those videos make me real sad because the people filming are not there to do repairs. They are there to show the history and the decay that's happened to a once beautiful home. Most of the homes they show are totally rotted with many belongings left inside and trash everywhere, which makes me sad. So it's nice to watch a restoration video for a change, like this one I stumbled onto today.

It's strange to me that people think every single tree needs to be saved.
If you ever owned property in this type of area you would understand.
You're right about removing any trees that could damage the house at some point.
As for those two trees next to the one that was already rotten and cut down, did you ever think about cutting them off about a couple of feet above the ground and then making a giant tabletop between them ?
That could be a nice feature when a large group of people is there and want to eat outdoors.

12 years in solar, I would get someone else to come out. I would never I'm my life , suggest to cut all those trees down. With the new high efficiency panels on the market today , we have installed panels in houses with alot more trees than this. Yes some will need to be cut down in the back, but all those trees? No.

Wouldn’t electricity poles ruin the natural beauty of the property? Those poles are ugly and will bring in the outside world into a lakeside oasis. The land is beautiful and feels like a rustic getaway from the rest of the city life. Even if you painted the poles colors to blend in with the other trees there would still be those ugly power lines running to the cottage. The charm of the property is that it can be self reliant and not dependent on the outside world. You could stock up on food and supplies and stay there for weeks and not need to leave or engage with anyone or anywhere else. Just my thoughts. Thank you for sharing your prosperity and property journey! I think that property was waiting for you. I can’t imagine there is anyone else that could appreciate it more and have the skills and resources as you do. I think the previous owner chose not to have electricity poles and lines put in for good reason.

With the price of power going the way it is, Solar is the wise choice, If your adding a boat launch maybe add a dock and use bi-facial solar panels as a roof? at least check with other solar installers about what tree's need to go... or other options such as ground mount solar away from the house.

C can with all your tech in it and panels on the outside of it at a placement away from the house, self heated panels for snow clearing and a wind mill for back up during low light days. Seen them set up around here actually. just an idea... anyways... wish you and family all the best!

That pine by the water with all the vertical branches and also the straps. If you can look in the middle, there's a straight-growing piece that's dead. I've done some research into this as I had a similar old, big, very tall pine that was very beautiful because of that growth pattern. It appears that the middle dead piece used to be the leader; maybe it got broken off in the wind. When the leader gets broken, other branches start to grow vertically. I've also verified that by observing other younger different-sized/age pines with the leader snapped more recently or even very recently. The correct way to maintain is to allow "one" of those to become the new leader and cut the others off, can even take the "chosen" one and strap it tighter to what's left of the above trunk to encourage it to grow more straight up. I might be wrong about the dead piece in the middle being the one-time leader, but I'm pretty confident that is what creates that growth pattern in pines. Additionally, another thing to know that I learned from a forester is that the more water in the ground, the more a tree trunk branches off into branches and/or helps cause the trunk to split. I have also verified that from my experience. I enjoy hearing about this property. Y, lots of work.

I would lay brick or railroad ties where you plan to put gravel right next to the grassy area going down to the proposed boat ramp. Will help keep the gravel from spreading out. Will keep rocks out of the grass so you aren't shooting stones all over whenever you mow the grass. I dearly wish I had that house. I remember seeing videos before anything was done. I would be in paradise out there. Build a nice pier with a medium size platform to fish from and to tie a boat to when you don't want to take it out of the water yet. Just an overall gem of a property.

My husband and I bought a place similar to yours, only on the Central Oregon Coast. He didn’t want to clear out the spruce and hemlock around the house. The day after we put the last coat of paint on the house, out buildings, 3 car garage, workshop and spring house, a 1 in a hundred year storm hit. These trees you are referring to need to be gone, like yesterday. We were able to barter with a logger and actually made some money. It took us 6 years to complete the project, because we lived 9 hours away. Due to circumstances beyond our control, our Heaven on earth was taken out by irresponsible forest management. Something I would suggest is putting sky lights in. They made a huge difference inside the house.

You are doing really well considering full time work and the other properties that need “stuff” done…..fishing sounded like you needed that time out for some fun with your dad too. ❤️🇦🇺🇨🇦
