Welcome to the twenty-first video in my "'Romeo and Juliet' GCSE English Literature Revision" series! In this video, I analyse Mercutio. I discuss who he is, his story-role, and what he might symbolise. I also analyse a bunch of quotations that relate to him, discussing how Shakespeare's use of language and writerly techniques helps to create certain impressions of Mercutio. Right at the end of this video, there's even a 'big question' for you to consider as well!

Hello !! I received a grade 8 in English Literature and wanted to thank you for helping me so so so much. I used to be a grade 2-3 student when it came to English literature and absolutely despised the subject and now I'm looking forward to continuing my English lit studies for A-levels !! Thank you so much :)

@@CermentStorm62 Hey so I'm currently in my final year of A levels and took English Literature as one of them ! I do the AQA exam board and at the end of the year, you sit 2 exam papers. In my school, we do 5 books and william blake poetry. Personally, I love the subject and it's fun when you actually understand the themes/characters etc. Though, compared to GCSEs it's little more difficult in terms of more AOs and the amount of books you do.

Throughout the play, femininity is looked down on leading for audiences to precise masculinity as a something superior. This is clear when Friar Lawrence insults Romeo by calling his tears “womanish”. In this scene the Friar is clearly trying to embarrass and mock Romeo for showing such emotions in front of him. He does this to try and snap Romeo out of his denial and stop him crying over something he can no longer control. This suggests Romeo is a feminine character who is emotional and irrational. Romeo is contrasted with characters such as Mercurio who show much more masculine traits and are seen as stronger and more violent. When Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel and he refuses so Mercutio wants to take his place to defend Romeos honour, this is made clear by the quote “O calm, dishonourable submission!/ Alla staccato carries it away / Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk!” Which shows Mercutio trying to goad Tybalt into a duel by insulting him therefore threatening his honour causing the fight to break out. In the end though Mercutio dies which is a Turing point in the play when it ascends into tragedy as it causes Roemo to take revenge and kill Juliets cousin. So in the end although masculine traits are seen as something superior to feminine traits, the irrational and hot-headed tendencies of these male charecter untimely leads to conflict and tragedy.
I just want to say thank you for your videos they have helped me tremendously, nervous for my lit exam on Monday but feeling more confident thanks to you. 👍
