Gunship 2000 - Amiga OCS/ECS version

- One of my fovorite helicopter flight sim from the Amiga - Gunship 2000.
Originally released in 1991 by Microprose on PC for MS-DOS it was a sequel to Gunship from 1986 which was released for many 8-bit and 16-bit platforms of the time. Released in 1993 for Amiga (OCS/ECS version - 32 colors) and 1994 for CD32 (AGA version - 256 colors) was very good port of the PC version, unfortunatelly it lacked the improvements introduced in the exclusive PC Scenario disk - new theaters, support units and missions builder. There was also a Playstation 1 version released in 1996.
The sequel introduced new helicopter types. Along with AH-64A Apache you could strap yourself in lighter and faster but less armored AH-1W Super Cobra, transport and extract troops and equipment in UH-60K/L Blackhawk, scout the battlefield in AH-6 Defender or OH-58D Kiowa Warrior. With new promotions you get access to stealthy RAH-66 Comanche in both Scout and Gunship configurations and finally to the ultimate killing machine - AH-64B Longbow Apache (in real life Longbow was designated as Delta, Bravo designation was assumed by Microprose as the Longbow was still not fielded at the time of game release).
Initially you flew solo missions in Central Europe or Persian Gulf - but after few successful sorties you were given the opportunity to command a flight of 5 helicopters in single flight missions or campaign mode. The game had pretty good command interaface, where you could plot a flight plan for each section or individual unit. Select flight profile (speed & altitude), RoE (weapons hold/free) etc. In PC expansion "Islands & Ice" which introduced new theaters - Philippine Islands and Antarctica, you got additional support in the form of artillery or air strikes at designated points.
You had to take care of your men. They gained experience and were more and more efficient with more sorties under their belts. But they could perish and you would get new green replacements in their place. There was cool feature, that if one of your guys went down and you had Blackhawk (or possibly Kiowa) in your flight, you could pick up your own flight member to make sure he will not end up as MIA after the mission!
There are few differences between the PC and Amiga versions. Besides the obvious graphic engine, Amiga version seem to ignore the visiblity range aspect - unlike in PC version, no matter what's your altitude or weather conditions, the enemy can see you and vice versa at constant distances more than 7km away provided there's clear line of sight. That makes sneaking up on enemies a bit harder on Amiga version. On PC you could get really low and sneak up to someone for a gun kill at 1,5km, here it's impossible in open terrain.
When still flying solo, it's better to take on only one target - primary or secondary, as when you try to take out both it will probably take you more than 30 minutes in which case points will be deducted at the end of the mission. Not to mentions increased risk of getting shot down. When you take command of a flight that's non-issue as you can send each section to different task.
@12:20 Showcased in this mission is ripple firing laser guided Hellfires - they still are not fire-and-forget weapons, but if the target group is tightly packed, you can fire several Hellfires at few second intervals. While the targets are eliminated the next ones are being lased and missiles will switch targets mid flight. This way you can take out several targets in short amount of time.

THIS IS THE MOTHER of my Helo Sim career with grandmom being Original gunship on C64. But this one for the Amiga was my TEMPLE! Sweet Amiga times*
good times om my Amiga 1200. The soundtrack alone gets you into combat mode! Hot damn!
i watched newer gunship reviews and i thinked something does not feel right, then i added Amiga in search.... menu music, sounds... all as it should be , as i played in my childhood... LOVE IT
Despite the graphic lmits of the times, the details that can be found everywhere in the software still made the gameplay an exciting experience.
Amiga my favourite computer ever
I could not believe this was real back in the day. Literally played my ass off!
The Game and soundtrack in base are legendary.
Thx for the great memory! Played this on my CD32 for a long time in my youth. Now we have DCS with the Apache and playing with HOTAS and in VR - just crazy man!
Ah the memories. Brilliant
And now we have the Apache in DCS...
Should we continue this playthrough?
Here's the playlist where new missions will be uploaded: ua-cam.com/play/PLIku_oD9y-RA5g-0ypPiggkw6AUS_ph8W.html
Definitely
👍
Absolutely
You brought back childhood memories holy crap man thanks
Still a good game and runs brilliantly on the Pi400 with PiMiga :) Thanks for the video.
spent months on this game. i still have it on cd32 haha ..
For both this and F-117A the exclusive Amiga music exudes action which is what defined the platform's gaming history, though I prefer the more muted soundtracks of the PC originals because their vibe is techno thriller.
Wow. Memory’s of 27 years ago
I have played this game a lot as a kid, and I've never knew there was units description in the game!
Great game and quite difficult. ❤️
Loved it.
Best sim
For Amiga it was the best flight sim for me.
That opening title music tho
I find Amiga ports of F19, F15 SE2, F117 and Gunship 2000 far superior in audio department compared to PC releases.
Completed this at the highest difficulty possible with my cousin several times. 10/10 on the Amiga using an A590 hard disk.
The gfx were better in my memory... ;)
Maybe you played the PC version (as i did) wich looks somewhat better.
Great game , there was a movie "Firebirds" and for me it was based on GS2000
Rather GS2000 was based on Firebirds as the movie came a year before the game ;) But yeah. I think they used some of the still footage from that film as a base for few of the screens in the game.
Target left :)
Great Soundtrack, and guess what Microprose are back, hopefully we will get a modern remake
That would be awesome, but realisticly it would take a lot of time developing modern version of Gunship.
Wspaniała gra.
Finally G2000 :)
I love this game .
Wow, I was never able to fly that low and that fast without slamming into the side of a hill! I guess I'll have to try easy mode instead of realistic so I can fly lower.
Hello, I have one question: how can I get target info, like in 8:30? I couldn't find it in manual, tried every key!

@@damsonn Now things will be a bit easier (I hope), thanks!
Loved this game when I was a kid.
Music is great, like a John Carpenter remix.
Never knew how to play it properly.
Pixelated graphics seems hard on the eye now.
I don't recalls it being like that on the Amiga 600.
But that was almost 30 years ago.
Perhaps it was...
Trust me, it was. :)
