They have a rich culture and descend from several different ethnic groups including: Bakongo, Yoruba, Igbo, Mandinka, Guale (Indigenous), Yamassee-Seminole (Indigenous), Akan, among others. They’ve preserved a lot that we all can learn from as African Americans.
My family is from South Carolina. I have family from Upstate and Low Country. When I received my dna results I learned i had family from Barbados and other places from the Caribbean, just like the gentleman stated. South Carolina is a unique place and vibe.

They are as follows: 1) South Carolina (AA) Black Americans - Strongest; 2) Central Puerto Rico - Medium Range (This came as a complete surprise. This includes Black Americans from the following states: CT, NY, NJ, PA, OH, IL, IN, TN, KY, AR, Northern FL, DE, MA, VA, WV, NC, SC, GA, AL, MS, LA, and Eastern TX.

Growing up in the in the suburbs of New York, all but one family we knew and associated with were very dark complected. My parents are from North Carolina and aside from my family most of the N. Carolinians ranged from very dark to near white. But most I met or knew were of a lighter hue. So all my life having met very few S. Carolinians who were light I assumed they were the darker blacks of the South. Growing up I was very jealous of the S. Carolinians who were so pretty and unique of that dark hue and many with that thick black luscious kinky hair. I'm not sure if he's referring to most melanated as far as skin tone or by population of people of color.

I wanted to say though, the darkest Americans are from Florida, I’m Carolinian and dark but I’ve met much darker people here from Florida, South America and the Caribbean, even darker than the Africans I’ve met.
