I remember being a high schooler and rushing home on the days that I didn’t have after school practice, to get a bowl of Kellogg cornflakes with milk, a little sugar and I planted my butt at the kitchen table and watched Sesame Street! Thank you SS you are part of the reason I did so well in school all those years.
1981 here too! I watched as much as I could as well. The songs and ways they taught was so entertaining and informative. When I had kids I’d plop them in front of Sesame Street too. My now 9 yr old knew every song 🥹

Born in 1965, I grew up on Sesame Street. Now that I am pushing 60, I am here to tell you that what I learned on Sesame Street are lessons I apply to this day. It formed me. As for Cookie Monster, he didn’t convince me that I could eat all the cookies I want - I already knew cookies were a sometime food. To me, Sesame Street was a real place where we could go - I always wanted to take some trash to Oscar the grouch, and it would have been especially curated for him.
...I LOVED Oscar the GROUCH because he was so REAL (u know u ALWAYS had that 'grouchy one' around). Plus, I'm a 1965 baby too. 😠😠😠... that's 4 Oscar. 🤣🤣🤣

Don't forget about Flip Wilson! He had Sesame Street as guests on his variety show in the early years and lovingly made several appearances on the show as Geraldine and as himself! This show is such a treasured memory from my childhood! We felt we were too cool to watch it in the early 70s but all secretly went home and did every day it was on! Although they changed who played Gordon after one season, Susan was like your favorite school teacher and what a voice! I heard that a few years ago Loretta Mae Long had some kind of accident while out and I was mortified! Not our Susan! She came out of it alright, though thankfully!

This is one of the best tv shows in the history of education for teaching children. This helps children learn not to judge others and not to be rasisist.
Too bad it didn't teach them how to spell properly. But then again, maybe proper spelling is considered racist among some of the more primitive groups residing in the Western World.
I’ve watched so much PBS as both a child and adult, and that’s why I’ve been a longtime financial contributor and member. I left junior high school as the schools highest scoring reading student thanks to my mom when I struggled to read early on in school, and then with help from shows like Sesame Street on PBS. ❤️
My nephew was 2 when it came out and I was happy to see him watching Sessame Street. There was nothing like that for me and I saw the cutural revelance in the show and a community of puppets just like my neighborhood. I always associate the show with the joy it brought to my only nephew.

In my childhood Bob McGrath went to the same church I did. After meeting Bob for the.first time at age four or five there isn't any celebrity I could meet as an adult that would top that experience for me. I had the opportunity to speak with him as an adult a couple years before he passed.

It's great to learn of Dr. Pierce and his creative work on the show. He was another pioneering Black man. However, another psychiatrist, famed Dr. Frances Cress Welsing, called Sesame Street "Bantu" programming. She critiqued it as reinforcing ghetto stereotypes. I respect them both. As a preschooler during the show's early years, I found it very educational. It reinforced my K & 1st grade learning. It is the stuff of nostalgia on a black & white, floor-mounted TV screen, on Channel 13.

Being raised in New York in the Bronx channel 13 was our PBS station and that's when we got introduced to in the late 60s them on sesame Street hot pots Lodge zoom electric company Mr Rogers the McNeil report and national geographic Nova and MotorWeek as I'm in my 60s now and still watches PBS stations even online
I'm so happy to be a product of the beginning days of Seseme Street in the early '70's. Roosevelt Franklin was my favorite chatacter. Later on my grandsons were a part of the program in 2017. Thanks so much for this short documentary. I truly appreciate it.

I grew up with Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, and all the PBS kids shows. I was always happy to learn something new. It was also a window into the world beyond my city. After high school I joined the Navy. On deployment is when I discovered Sesame Street was international. While I was sitting on a ship in the middle of the sea is day I realized that Big Bird was a canary because the European version was a parrot.😂 Before that day I never focused that much on the character. It was always the lesson.
I was born in 1959, but I used to watch Sesame Street too. As a music education major, I appreciated its creativity in teaching all children the basics. Good pedagogy demands being creative and relevant to your students’ experiences to easily bridge them to new concepts to learn. Also, it should be fun to make it interesting.
Loved Sesame Street as a child and i always thought the writers behind it were very clever. But in more recent times i think its become a bit too commercialized.

I really found Sesame Street and The Electric Company valuable in that I picked up counting and literacy when I was 3 years old back in 1973. I hope it can continue well into the future, as there are always preschoolers to educate.
I credit shows like Sesame Street with learning english as a young child. Sesame Street and many of the PBS shows of that time were fun and informative. I can't imagine not having Sesame Street for today's kids.

Thanks so much for the history of this wonderful program I have loved since my developmental years. I grew up watching Sesame Street, and I loved every minute of it!
I wish my children had the same Sesame Street that we grew up with, but unfortunately it is now a shell of its former self.

I grew up with Sesame Street, Reading Rainbow, and all the PBS kids shows. I was always happy to learn something new. It was also a window into the world beyond my city. After high school I joined the Navy. On deployment is when I discovered Sesame Street was international. While I was sitting on a ship in the middle of the sea is day I realized that Big Bird was a canary because the European version was a parrot.😂 Before that day I never focused that much on the character. It was always the lesson.
So many things in America that we created or inspired by Black Americans it’s insane how much they keep out of schools.

I was born in 1959, but I used to watch Sesame Street too. As a music education major, I appreciated its creativity in teaching all children the basics. Good pedagogy demands being creative and relevant to your students’ experiences to easily bridge them to new concepts to learn. Also, it should be fun to make it interesting.

Loved Sesame Street as a child and i always thought the writers behind it were very clever. But in more recent times i think its become a bit too commercialized.

When my family moved to the US from Japan Sesame Street, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, and Reading Rainbow helped me learn English before I started public school. Excellent shows.

I really found Sesame Street and The Electric Company valuable in that I picked up counting and literacy when I was 3 years old back in 1973. I hope it can continue well into the future, as there are always preschoolers to educate.
I credit shows like Sesame Street with learning english as a young child. Sesame Street and many of the PBS shows of that time were fun and informative. I can't imagine not having Sesame Street for today's kids.
