No fluff. Straight to the point. Great tips. Thanks for the content!
Good tip with the spring washer and it keeping pressure against sprocket, seal race and oring.
Any contortion or movement in behind would play havoc on oring.
Great tip Keith!! and very precise instructions as always, thanks for sharing!!!
Love your vids Keith! Easy to follow and well cut, keep it up!
Just switched to a 15/50 combo. I sold my 450 six days that I used for baja and cross county rides. That bike was absolutely amazing for 35,000km. Immediately after buying the 350 I found it is definitely not the same bike. Its fun, its a trail bike. I'll be trying a few modes to make it a cross country machine and this gear change has helped a lot. It now cruises at 95kmh verses the old 80kmh revving like it was going to explode. Had to take 1 link from chain from stock. A lot better for dual sporting. cheers.
I use a couple of sockets and a vise to recup the washer. I still have the original washer on my 17 year old 525 exc.
Neat idea. I will rejunvenate the old one and keep as my spare.
Cheers keith great video
Not sure what year your bike is but I added a 15 to my 2022 500 EXC-F and didn’t have to modify the case saver at all. It was close, but did NOT contact the chain. I did add the the dirt tricks washer however as the OEM washer was already visibly spinning on the counter sprocket.
I like your videos! Very well done.
Cheers!
Thanks Mike. Mine's a 2019 model.
2023 model here, 15t rubs on the center stripe of the case saver. After I cut it out, the chain rubs on the case saver now, it is minimal, but still it rubs. I hope it will make grooves and it will stop rubbing in time.
Perhaps the newer models addressed this issue? I know the 2020-2022 models had some updates. You might see if a 2022 guide will fit your bike? Cheers!
I have seen the chain jump on a 15tooth which damaged the clutch slave cylinder, so make sure you don’t run your chain to far past its limit.
I went 14:45 for hwy/longer rides, and 14:48 for most other stuff.
Yes excellent point. I am keeping a close eye on the chain wear. And I agree with you on the smaller rear. My next rear sprocket will be a 48, so 14/48 will be the normal selection.
@@keithjob 14:48 works great, but the 14:45 doesn’t really bother my bike on the tricky tracks, but the Vortex ecu stopped all the flame outs, well worth the money, and so is the “Promoto billet exhaust end cap with the internal spark cones removed, not a huge noise gain, which is good.
hey mate i know this is 2 years to late but what speed were u getting with that gearing and was it still able to pull up
@@mysticoce3595 hi, My 501 had exhaust and ecu upgrades , and it would pull 190kph on the gps easy, and 1st was still plenty low enough.. so the 14/45 was brilliant even loaded.
That bike is now my son’s with over 200 hours and zero issues.
Thanks Keith. I just purchased a 2023 EXC 500 and was surprised at the mx type stock gearing (14/50). Not that comfortable on long rides. Am looking to fit 15/48 to give it more legs on the road. Any comments on 15/48 would be appreciated for this newbie to EXCs. Thanks.
That would haul.... on the open stuff. Anything that looked tight or technical and you'd be giving the clutch a real workout....
Just go 14 45 stil good in bush. And sits on highway speeds just fine
Hey 👋🏻 What sprocket size do you usually run? And what is stock gearing on KTM 500?
Stock is 14/50. I swap front sprockets a fair bit, 13-14-15 depending on terrain. Currently running a 14/48 combo which I like.
The washer is called a Belleville washer.
I am about to try a 15T front on my 501 with stock 48T rear. Do you have any experience with this for open BDR style riding and some pavement?
I have not ridden BDR so not sure what the terrain is like. 15/48 is pretty tall, it would be great on the open fast roads, but it might be too tall if things get tight.
Mine is not fitting between the swingarm guard not sure what to do
Not sure where you mean?
Wondering what your thoughts are on making sure you are not running even/even or odd/odd for both the front and rear sprocket?
I've had people tell me you shouldn't do that due to how the chain lines up with the teeth but I've never been able to find any good info backing that clime up
Another great question! It's not just odd/even, it's also number of chain links. Check out this website: www.gearingcommander.com/
Load up your bike and sprocket config, then scroll down a bit and it will show you the relative sprocket/chain wear... "Same tooth-chain position every X Chain Rev's". The higher numbers the better. That should answer your questions.
I just replaced my gearing/chain and wanted 14/48 but ended up getting a 49 rear, Big mistake, turns out with a 14/49 combo the chain is either to short with adjusters wound all way in or u have to run your adjusters all way out, there is no middle ground, so now going to a 15 front to get sum adjustment back hopefully.
You just removed the structural integrity. Now if the chain piles up it might go through your case.
