2021 KTM 500EXCF: Can One Bike Do It All? We Think This One Can.

  • If a guy could only own one bike that was dialed in for all kinds of riding in all kinds of conditions we think that the EXCF platform is the ultimate machine for almost any use.
    the one likely exception is a rider looking to cover extensive highway miles. while this bike is absolutely capable of going all day long on the tarmac, you'd likely want to kill yourself at the end of it. knobby tire and motor buzz and vibrations become an issue for me when i spend more that 30-40 min at a time on the road. standing, stopping and taking a break do help though. this is the one real weak area of this bike that can't be overlooked if you intend to do much bitumen.
    Single track, open desert, forest service two track, club racing, baja, BDR runs, TAT missions, sunday trail rides, the LA to Barstow to vegas run, the Baja 1000.
    In this video we talk about how adaptable and versatile the EXCF is for any of the kids of riding you might be doing, why if you could only pick one bike why we think it should be this one and what mods we've been testing and what we love the most so far.
    Also of note but not mentioned is the absolutely flawless performance of this power set up and the complete elimination of the troublesome cough and stall (flame out) problems of the big bore thumpers.
    Some of the parts we highlight here and or are new on since Idaho:
    Graves Motorsports titanium slip on
    GET ECU
    GET traction control knob
    Taco Moto custom maps
    P3 carbon frame guards
    Race Tech Xplor48 conversion system
    STR rear disc guard (g10)
    STR front disk guard (carbon fiber)
    Seat Concepts seat, comfort width, standard height
    ET Racing .8 headlight
    **NOTE- some of the bikes in our videos have been converted to off highway use only or race / competition use machines and some parts or modifications may not be legal for use in all states, always consult all local and federal regulations before making any modifications to your bike.
    if you need any parts, want us to build you a bike, have any questions or need help with anything on your machine don't hesitate to call or email us.

    I’ve owned a KLR, 690 enduro, and a 500 exc. The 500 is the unicorn everyone has been looking for. It’s been here this whole time.

    Have a 2002 KTM 520 EXC with an FMF pipe and it bangs like a new bike. I wouldn’t sell it for anything. An icon of KTM when they put all the best bits into it.

    No matter what, it seems to always come down to suspension doesn’t it!!! When you think about it, the suspension is your ride.

    Yep ... 20 EXC-F here, it's my woods bike, dunes bike, as well as dual sport use and...my supermoto. Got parts for each setup, and lots of TacoMoto goodies onboard. Looking into snow bike conversion next. Excellent do-all machine.

    Thanks for the info. I just sold 3 bikes and bought a new 500. A super tenere, a yz450 and a street legal xc250. Those 3 bikes are better at each of their tasks but the 500 does a pretty good job and I only have one bike to take care of now.

    Another great video! We love that Slick Rock trail! My 2018 Beta 500 RRS is what I use for a "Do it All". Feeling one day I need to try the EXC 500. Between you guys and JL it sure sounds like that's king of "If you could only have one bike..." Keep up the bike build vids....Very informative!

    I had the idea my WR250R was the best do-it-all bike. And it honestly gets me to and form work commuting just fine. It swaps to sumos very easily and loves to wheelie. It gets great gas mileage. It rips deep sand. With proper tires, it will handel mud and woods trails fine. It's just a bit heavy. BUt soft plush suspension makes it enjoyable.
    I enjoy my WR250 more than my YZ250 most days. So this KTM 500 looks like a damn unicorn.

    I've noticed the Motoz tractionator rears I've used tend to slide out quick beyond a certain lean angle in corners and hard to keep in control in a slide. I'm running tubes though at 8psi offroad. Thoughts?

    I made my DR650 into a do all bike at a fraction of the cost of the 500excf. Obviously there is a HUGE modern gap between the two and the KTM is superior. My point is you can do it all for far less and have just as much fun. I have followed many a Euro bike and they have NEVER lost me. The DR is much more comfortable for a long haul. Don't get me wrong, when I'm on my 250xc, technical trails are much easier because of the weight.

    Just bought 2022 350 exc-f and was looking at exhaust slip ons. I had the FMF Q4 slip on on my Suzuki. Can you put a slip on on the exc-f without a tuner? My tech at KTM dealer said a slip on is fine and won’t need tuner. Then I see other info saying you can’t put one on w/out a tuner or ecu? Can I get tacos take on that

    Great video and good timing for me as I'm likely getting one soon and live in Moab! Haven't made up my mind on Husky vs KTM but the talk about FE subframe issues has me concerned and I'd like to have better weight carrying/attachment capabilities. Do you think the FE linkage would help with the shock issues? Do you think a 350 would be better suited for a rider with little experience? I feel like the 500 may be too much power but like idea of having one bike for longer road rides. Oh, also I'm a little over 200 lbs.

    • @TACOMOTOCO
      @TACOMOTOCO  3 роки тому +1

      Radness on all that!
      Ktm over husky for the sub frame unless you covert it from plastic the the ktm aluminum and do the plastics / tank / seat swap
      350 is a good choice

    • @dirtrider9268
      @dirtrider9268 Рік тому

      @@heshone1 not sure but what is common is breaking the rear fender mounts on KTM 500 since they only have two plastic mounting tabs extending it from the end of the subframe. My friend broke the fender mounts and side plate tab, from leaning on the back fender to reach for a ratchet strap. $110 US...

    stupid question but I'm considering by a 500exc for dual sport use. 20% street 80% loose surface. Do I need a cush hub? I thought I would ask because you seem to know more than anyone about these bikes. Thanks the videos are amazing. Plan to order accessories from you to support more videos!

    • @TACOMOTOCO
      @TACOMOTOCO  2 роки тому +2

      Great question
      Based on what your described not needed. Will just add weight and complexity to your bike 🤙🏽🤙🏽

    • @Brian-xplor278
      @Brian-xplor278 2 роки тому +1

      Agreed, I have a cush left over from a 525 and started using it last year for longer road DS rides. It seems 2x as heavy (with the heavier ds tire) and bike is a little less fun probably more so due to the higher gearing for the street set up. Definitely smoothed things out on the 525, but hardly noticeable on the 2014.
      Just replaced the clutch dampers after 10k miles and they were barely worn. No clutch basket ridges at all. Bike has probably 5k CO and Utah singletrack, and the rest DS: rode moderately hard.
      Would probably sell the cush, but too lazy since it is already set up.

    This is probs a stupid question but I wanna build this exact setup and confused on what u mean about the taco moto maps is it something u plug into the get ecu or does the get ecu come with it already?

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252 2 роки тому

      If you buy the ECU directly from TacoMoto Co, it will come preprogrammed with their map. If you already have an ECU and want their mapping, you have to send it to them I believe.
