On my first day of school, I had everything clean and organized. I had all my copies made and knew the bell schedule. But once they walked in and were staring at me, I got total stage fright and didn’t know what I was teaching!
This still happens to me 5 years in! Not as badly, but there is always a moment when i'm stood there unsure what to say. I wonder if this will ever change?

I start preschool teaching in the fall and it has been a whirlwind of change for me since prior to this I was a pediatric nurse tech and wanted to try a change of pace and I have found where I belong. I'm so excited to see my adorable little faces this fall

I've just got my first teaching job starting in September and this was great because I had no idea where to start on the first day ... they don't teach you these things at Uni :D Im super excited but also super overwhelmed. All the little jobs I have to do like the daily timetable and seating plans I just took for granted on placement and I'm really nervous! But this video gave some ideas about where to start. Thank you :D

Really enjoying your videos!! Currently prepping for my year 4 class in September as I'm going to be an NQT. I think i'll be pinching the shields idea! I love anything that can open up a discussion. I'm going to get my class to write their aims for year 4 on a colourful balloon and we're going to take pictures of them so it looks like they're holding their aims balloon for a year round display that we can have up and refer to at the end of the year!
Love the balloons idea! May need to make a note of that myself. I had year 5 for my NQT year but have also taught year 4 :) I must remember to take a photo of mine on day 1. There is always so much to remember! Thank you for leaving us a comment :)

Don’t worry about working supply. It’s such an amazing window into different schools and how they work. I think it’s great experience and part of me regrets not doing it myself! You’ll get such a good feel for different school communities. Also I have lots of friends who were offered jobs through supply! ☺️

This was super helpful, thanks so much! If possible, I’d like to see a video on planning and marking/using time efficiently! During my PGCE, I’ve found it really hard to have a work life balance with marking and planning taking up my entire weekends and evenings! I know it gets easier the more experienced you become but any tips you could give to make my workload a little more manageable would be really appreciated! Thanks guys :)

We are working on some videos to help with time management at the moment and will definitely make a video about marking and assessment (which is such a hot topic of course) I think I’ve finally found a good balance and would like to share what I’ve learnt over the past 5 years. Next year will be my RQT year. Very excited to put everything I have learnt from my NQT year into practise and make improvements! I am in year 1 so my first week back will be lots of routine for the children coming up from EYFS! Love your videos xx
When I was a RQT I went to a course for RQTs/NQTs and found it really useful! It was good to continue training even though I was in my second year. See if your school will consider sending you to one! I bet year 1 will be crazy - you're braver than I am (i've never taught that young other than on placement!) have a great year!

For Teachers The main question on my lips right now is the amount of teaching to attempt to do whilst on the course. I am doing a SCITT programme with a QTS and PGCE awarded at the end. I don't want to jump in and take on lots and lots of teaching before I feel confident with it, but at the same time I appreciate you need to work towards teaching up to 80% of the timetable. How would you suggest getting the balance?
That’s tricky. I hope we managed to help during our livestream! It’ll seem like such a huge amount of work at the start but it’ll start to feel like second nature soon enough. Be sure to stay in touch with us and dm us any time on instagram ☺️
I love the DUMTUMS thing thank you! What do you do, or would you do, about the LO? Do you get them to write it in? At the moment I print it out and ask them to stick it in but it's a bit of a faff always printing etc and them not stickly very neatly!
I always get them to write the LO! I also get the class to generate the LO where possible. Eg. Tell them a bit about the lesson, show some visual cues, what do we think our objective is. Sometimes I write it for them too of course! Lots of different ways to do it but that works for me :)

Thank you soo much for this video! I will be starting my NQT year in September and going in for a week tomorrow and this video has been really helpful. I was struggling with how to plan my first day and I actually like the idea if having English and maths on the first morning and then get to know me activities in the afternoon. It is a year 5 class so it will get the ground running and they will know what I expect from them.
Thank you for such specific feedback on the video! It’s always nice to find out which parts people find useful. I always have core subjects on day one. For me personally it helps a lot with behaviour management and time management too! I also had year 5 for my first class as an NQT (Ryan did too!!)
Fab video with some great advice!! Looking forward to setting up my own classroom for my NQT year starting in September. Planning on my first day of teaching involving practical activities and hands on learning. Will do a get to know to you session in the morning followed by an afternoon of fun science experiments and parachute games. ☺

I’ve got a couple of transition afternoons this week with my new class, and I’ve been struggling to know what will help us all get to know each other but also has value. I am so nervous for September - I am staying in my training school for my NQT year, I’m even keeping a few of the same children, but still really scared!
Don't worry! It'll be seriously tough but it'll be such a memorable year, I promise. There is no way you can truly prepare for that first day (even by reading all the books and watching all the videos!) but after a couple of weeks it'll all start to click into place :) Good luck and stay in touch! Thanks for the video! Im also teaching in Hong Kong after an immersion program in the UK! I love most of the teaching activities I learnt from the UK but some of them are not working out in typical Hong Kong classroom. Hong Kong students tend to have more homework, more drilling practice in lessons. I would like to hear you guys' opinion around it. Even though I only have one year experience of teaching, I am still figuring my routine and creating resources. It is very helpful that you suggested resources for us. Thank you for that, it helps to create a lot. I used Kahoot to motivate my students sometimes in lesson, however, not really suitable to use on the first day as students would be easily distracted. Therefore, I would use the first lesson to get to know them and set up rules with them tgt. It is really helpful to take out those rules in the middle of the terms to review the performance. I also wonder what's your daily routine of teaching in HK as it is quite hectic. I'm impressive you squeeze time to film for us. I hope to get the book in order to learn more! Thank you :)

Perhaps that is why we are able to find a healthy work life balance. I know that the local school system can be very demanding and a lot of pressure is put on the children. For Teachers Hi guys! That is the question! I'm studying in twickenham (St Mary's) but unsure where to apply. Stay in greater London, Surrey, Oxford?? What I realised over my placements is that I like bigger schools where teachers work together and to teach year 3. I like the city life with shops and a gym nearby, but I don't like it too busy or in the countryside in the middle of nowhere. Any ideas? P.S I'm in Hong Kong for the summer (brought up here) and dream of becoming an international teacher in Asia in maybe 3 years 😄 love the content, helps so much!!

I think your first year of teaching is really just a taste anyway so I don't think it matters what school you choose. You can see if it feels right for you and can always move in the future. I went for the first offer I got and wasn't fussy at all - the school was tough but it ended up being an amazing experience! I also have Year 3 :)
Great advice! Just need to focus on my last year (dissertation and final placement). Any advice on what you wrote your diss, when to apply for NQT year schools, and surviving the last placement 😀 That's just another video idea. Probably going to stop worrying about finding the perfect school for NQT year and just go for it! Stay awesome!! Definitely will keep watching and message 😄
Ooooo I wrote down a note somewhere to do a video about my dissertation and forgot to map it out! I was going to record that. Thank you for reminding me - i'll work on a mini series about that! Don't worry at all about finding a "perfect" school.. mostly because the perfect school doesn't exist (I don't think anyway) and you can soak up experience wherever you end up. I need help I've always had a dream of being a primary school teacher but after failing science thought it wasn't possible , but since finding a way to do it I've read a lot of bad press about being a teacher and want to know what's the teaching pay like and is it worth it as my second option is being an events manger
Hey! Teaching is such a tricky career to sum up. Take some time to watch some of our videos (maybe ‘reasons to become a primary school teacher’) will be useful to you. We love our jobs but we aren’t delusional - we know it’s hard work too! I believe the positives outweigh the negatives and that the work is worth it, but of course there are days that it feels like too much. Get as much experience as you can working in primary schools (work experience if possible, or just ask around) so you can get a feel for the profession. Speak to as many teachers as you can too! There are Facebook groups full of teachers who would happily speak to you about their experiences. Be sure to let us know what you choose in the end ☺️

For Teachers I feel it's time for a change! I started helping out at the local Rainbow guides unit to get some experience with kids (I have experience with my own kids but didn't think that would count 😁) and absolutely adore it. Going to go to the local primary for some further experience and to see if I could cope with the realities of being a teacher so we'll see how that goes! For Teachers The main question on my lips right now is the amount of teaching to attempt to do whilst on the course. I am doing a SCITT programme with a QTS and PGCE awarded at the end. I don't want to jump in and take on lots and lots of teaching before I feel confident with it, but at the same time I appreciate you need to work towards teaching up to 80% of the timetable. How would you suggest getting the balance?

I love the DUMTUMS thing thank you! What do you do, or would you do, about the LO? Do you get them to write it in? At the moment I print it out and ask them to stick it in but it's a bit of a faff always printing etc and them not stickly very neatly!
I always get them to write the LO! I also get the class to generate the LO where possible. Eg. Tell them a bit about the lesson, show some visual cues, what do we think our objective is. Sometimes I write it for them too of course! Lots of different ways to do it but that works for me :)

I will be starting my NQT year in September and going in for a week tomorrow and this video has been really helpful.
I was struggling with how to plan my first day and I actually like the idea if having English and maths on the first morning and then get to know me activities in the afternoon. It is a year 5 class so it will get the ground running and they will know what I expect from them.
Thank you for such specific feedback on the video! It’s always nice to find out which parts people find useful. I always have core subjects on day one. For me personally it helps a lot with behaviour management and time management too! I also had year 5 for my first class as an NQT (Ryan did too!!)
Fab video with some great advice!! Looking forward to setting up my own classroom for my NQT year starting in September. Planning on my first day of teaching involving practical activities and hands on learning. Will do a get to know to you session in the morning followed by an afternoon of fun science experiments and parachute games. ☺
Great idea to get them moving around! Chances are they’ll need to get some energy out on that first day. I love that you already have it planned out! I have my structure sorted too, love being organised ☺️☺️

I’ve got a couple of transition afternoons this week with my new class, and I’ve been struggling to know what will help us all get to know each other but also has value.
I am so nervous for September - I am staying in my training school for my NQT year, I’m even keeping a few of the same children, but still really scared!
Don't worry! It'll be seriously tough but it'll be such a memorable year, I promise. There is no way you can truly prepare for that first day (even by reading all the books and watching all the videos!) but after a couple of weeks it'll all start to click into place :) Good luck and stay in touch! Thanks for the video! Im also teaching in Hong Kong after an immersion program in the UK! I love most of the teaching activities I learnt from the UK but some of them are not working out in typical Hong Kong classroom.
Hong Kong students tend to have more homework, more drilling practice in lessons. I would like to hear you guys' opinion around it. Even though I only have one year experience of teaching, I am still figuring my routine and creating resources. It is very helpful that you suggested resources for us. Thank you for that, it helps to create a lot. I used Kahoot to motivate my students sometimes in lesson, however, not really suitable to use on the first day as students would be easily distracted. Therefore, I would use the first lesson to get to know them and set up rules with them tgt. It is really helpful to take out those rules in the middle of the terms to review the performance.
I also wonder what's your daily routine of teaching in HK as it is quite hectic. I'm impressive you squeeze time to film for us. I hope to get the book in order to learn more! Thank you :)

Perhaps that is why we are able to find a healthy work life balance. I know that the local school system can be very demanding and a lot of pressure is put on the children. For Teachers Hi guys! That is the question! I'm studying in twickenham (St Mary's) but unsure where to apply. Stay in greater London, Surrey, Oxford?? What I realised over my placements is that I like bigger schools where teachers work together and to teach year 3. I like the city life with shops and a gym nearby, but I don't like it too busy or in the countryside in the middle of nowhere. Any ideas? P.S I'm in Hong Kong for the summer (brought up here) and dream of becoming an international teacher in Asia in maybe 3 years 😄 love the content, helps so much!!
So a similar journey to ours! When you start looking for jobs in HK feel free to send me a pm (instagram perhaps?) and I can help out! I think your first year of teaching is really just a taste anyway so I don't think it matters what school you choose. You can see if it feels right for you and can always move in the future. I went for the first offer I got and wasn't fussy at all - the school was tough but it ended up being an amazing experience! I also have Year 3 :)
Great advice! Just need to focus on my last year (dissertation and final placement). Any advice on what you wrote your diss, when to apply for NQT year schools, and surviving the last placement 😀 That's just another video idea. Probably going to stop worrying about finding the perfect school for NQT year and just go for it! Stay awesome!! Definitely will keep watching and message 😄
Ooooo I wrote down a note somewhere to do a video about my dissertation and forgot to map it out! I was going to record that. Thank you for reminding me - i'll work on a mini series about that! Don't worry at all about finding a "perfect" school.. mostly because the perfect school doesn't exist (I don't think anyway) and you can soak up experience wherever you end up. I need help I've always had a dream of being a primary school teacher but after failing science thought it wasn't possible , but since finding a way to do it I've read a lot of bad press about being a teacher and want to know what's the teaching pay like and is it worth it as my second option is being an events manger
Hey! Teaching is such a tricky career to sum up. Take some time to watch some of our videos (maybe ‘reasons to become a primary school teacher’) will be useful to you. We love our jobs but we aren’t delusional - we know it’s hard work too! I believe the positives outweigh the negatives and that the work is worth it, but of course there are days that it feels like too much. Get as much experience as you can working in primary schools (work experience if possible, or just ask around) so you can get a feel for the profession. Speak to as many teachers as you can too! There are Facebook groups full of teachers who would happily speak to you about their experiences. Be sure to let us know what you choose in the end ☺️

For Teachers I feel it's time for a change! I started helping out at the local Rainbow guides unit to get some experience with kids (I have experience with my own kids but didn't think that would count 😁) and absolutely adore it. Going to go to the local primary for some further experience and to see if I could cope with the realities of being a teacher so we'll see how that goes!
