One of my least favorite tv tropes is someone getting blamed for somebody else's actions and the completely innocent individual is punished for no reason.

    • @F0re5tMan
      @F0re5tMan Рік тому +167

Same! Or better yet when the individual is trying to do good but is accused of starting trouble (like the Tom & Jerry episode Tot Watchers where Tom and Jerry keep a baby from getting into trouble due to the babysitter being a very neglectful teen [seriously, she spends most of the episode talking to her friend on the phone instead of doing her job], and she actually smacks Tom for "bothering" the baby). This trope is just NOT funny!

Pausing real quick to explain Patrick in the valentine's episode. It's not just that he thought he got a handshake, it's that he got a handshake from his best friend while everyone else got something much more special and meaningful. It's not that Patrick's materialistic, it's that Patrick thinks Spongebob doesn't care about him, hence his whole meltdown at the end. Patrick yells "Patrick needs love too!" because that's how he felt throughout the entire day, that he wasn't loved by someone he cares about, by someone who loves just about everybody in town. Hopefully that clears things up a bit, Strider.

@@lungs_alt It's a cartoon, and Patrick is characterized by his immaturity. I think this fits well into his characterization, even if he comes off as unlikable. It's not extreme enough to count the entire appearance as a bad Patrick episode.

    • @mutt-the-barbarian

Not only that but the moment that he decides to come to terms with the gift. That's when the world decides to rub it in his face that spongebob got a valentines for someone he just met. (Along with a few other people) it might not be rampage worthy but I could understand Patrick feeling like spongebob had not put much thought into it and feeling a bit hurt.

Hard disagree. Squidward is a great character but you've got him wrong. He is definitely NOT secretly fond of Spongebob and Patrick, he's just a good character because although he is really grouchy, he has a genuine passion for music and he still has the capacity for empathy like a normal person which is how he feels bad for Spongebob in the Dying for Pie and Pizza Delivery episodes, which motivates him to do the right thing. Squidward is the perfect antithesis to Spongebob and their dynamic is one of the best parts of the show.

  • @Taw973

I feel like a good reason why both Club SpongeBob and Jellyfishing are liked is because in the former, Squidward kept disobeying SpongeBob and Patrick to not go into the club (due to how small the box is). Given Squidward's belief of reverse psychology. He disobeyed and that's what got him stuck there. Plus, he tried to escape and it clipped off all the way to the Kelp Forest. Also, it wasn't about them mindlessly listening to a conch, because given that SpongeBob is a show on an episodic basis, they didn't have to do anything because it's all reset by then. Plus, Squidward did try to act like he's better than both of them (especially with him shaking his rear at SpongeBob).
and In Jellyfishing's case, Squidward instead of just simply declining it, he decides to be arrogant about it and laugh at their expense, that and he slapped a Jellyfish in this episode by calling it stupid, and given that they're this show's equivalent to bees, it made that jellyfish mad for being physically and verbally attacked. Though, 1 problem I do have is why are SpongeBob and Patrick wanting to hunt Jellyfish. It's the first episode and their portrayed like vicious animals that just attack just because they want to. Whereas in later episode, they have shown to be the show's equivalent to butterflies but only bees when necessary.
It's also fascinating to see how much your thoughts on episodes like Opposite Day and Hello Bikini Bottom have changed since you last talked about them.
and to be fair to Valentines Day. I do get Patrick's sentiment. After so much build up and hype, Patrick would've expected a lot more, so with something that really anyone would've done. You could take his frustration as disappointment. Plus, he was about to give SpongeBob the benefit here until everyone in Bikini Bottom just rubs their gifts by thanking SpongeBob, and being constantly disrupted, which did break Patrick's patience. Though, yeah, he went way too far with what he did.
Also, Kevin did come back in the later seasons. Other than that, Nice List all around. I'm glad to see you have opinions that don't always align with the majority of fans and aren't afraid to say them without talking down to them or being overly mean for having a hot take.
Keep up the good work, Strider. ;)

I personally don’t mind Jellyfishing or Jellyfish Jam but I can also see why some wouldn’t like these episodes because in Jellyfish Jam, it feels empty aside from a couple of jokes and the “thing that would not leave” trope can be a bit repetitive to some people.
As for Jellyfishing, while I do like it, it’s one of my least favorite episodes of Season One and don’t get me wrong because I do like Patrick but there are some times where his stupidity, obnoxiousness and selfishness really hurts certain episodes (Especially in the modern era of SpongeBob.) and torture jokes aren’t really funny to some people such as Strider who don’t like seeing people in pain yet I personally think it’s very unfair to disabled people because it’s like saying it’s okay to hurt people which is not.
I am sure someone else has said it before but overrated doesn’t mean it’s bad but moreso a likable thing that shouldn’t be in the first place.
Don’t get me wrong because I personally love these episodes as much as the next SpongeBob fanatic but some of the ratings are way too high for my liking, c’mon. 🥶😮

Now, when it comes to Patrick’s character in Valentine’s Day, I remember checking out Mr Enter’s SpongeBob season 4 video yesterday, and one thing I noticed is that the SpongeBob audience that were hyped up about the Best Day Ever marathon actually felt like how Patrick felt in Valentine’s Day, a little let down and not what was to be expected. I can possibly see Patrick just getting disappointed that SpongeBob overhyped the handshake (since the actual gift he made for him was late) , basically, the kind of reaction the audience got with the Best Day Ever marathon, and ESPECIALLY with the Truth or Square premiere. But in the end, I can see where you’re coming from with this, Strider.

While I laughed at some of the gags in Jellyfishing when I was younger, I still got this uneasiness from the "Firmly Grasp it" scene. Here are my thoughts on these episodes:
    (0:50)
    #10 Jellyfish Jam
Simply put, I love this episode because of the catchy song Stadium Rave and a lot of good jokes. I particularly love the part where SpongeBob decides enough is enough and tries to kick out the jellyfish. I do feel bad for Squidward a little bit but frankly, when SpongeBob asked him to play his clarinet a little “Better”, he instead made it worse by playing lounder and got stung by 1,000 Jellyfish. Overall, a fun episode for me, but I understand why you don’t like it, Strider.
    (3:03)
#9 The Sponge Could The Fly (Lost Episode)
I find it enjoyable mainly for the patchy segments and the really good songs. I honestly felt the hype the first time I watched, I even had the same reaction as Patchy when the episode ended. I was like, “That’s it? That’s ‘The Lost Episode’? That really didn’t feel like a special episode.” Also, I do agree with you that my favorite moment is when Patchy loses all hope. While I don’t think this is the worst special SpongeBob has ever done, it is one of my least favorite specials.
    (5:47)
    #8 Valentine's Day
I have never been a fan of this episode. I do like what SpongeBob was trying to do for Patrick, and I did love Sandy in this episode. But Patrick wasn’t really likable to me.
    (8:23)
    #7 Club SpongeBob
The first part of this episode was funny. I literally thought SpongeBob and Patrick were being jerks to Squidward at first, but when I realized that they meant he literally couldn’t fit in the Clubhouse, I started laughing my head off. But other than the meme this episode created and Squidward’s line at 10:43, the rest of the episode is pretty boring. Not my favorite Season 3 episode.
    (10:51)
    #6 Opposite Day!
Okay, this episode is pretty funny to me. The whole idea is ridiculous, and I love how far SpongeBob and Patrick take the whole "Holiday” in this episode. Such as destroying SpongeBob’s house when he asked Patrick if he wanted to do “work” on the house with him. Plus, Gary barking like a dog was funny. Good holiday spirit, Gary. I will admit there is some Squidward Torture in this one, but I'm happy to let this one slide because, one the episode is still funny, and two this one of the rare Torture episodes where Squidward wins in the end, since he went after SpongeBob and Patrick with a bulldozer. Overall, a funny episode with a hilarious ending.
    (13:34)
    #5 The Snowball Effect
This episode is pretty relatable to me. I remember when I was younger, my friends and I would get into Snowball fights whenever school was canceled for the day, and we had a lot of fun then. Personally, I think this has several good moments, such as Squidward trying to convince SpongeBob and Patrick to continue snowball fighting each other, and the part where SpongeBob turns into a Snowball Machine Gun was funny. As far as the ending goes, I understand why you don’t like it, Strider, and I do agree with you. But I would honestly say this is a Classic SpongeBob episode for me, I just wish they changed the ending.
    (15:47)
    #4 Musclebob Buffpants
The opening scene where Sandy is training SpongeBob was pretty funny. My personal favorite parts are the Arm Cruncher and SpongeBob’s line, “This workout thing isn’t working out.” Also, I did love a lot of the visual jokes, such as the shadow of the anchor. Overall, I would say this is a decent episode, not bad, not amazing, but a pretty good classic episode.
    (18:16)
    #3 I’m your BIGGEST Fanatic
So I really don’t like this one. In fact, this is my personal pick for my least favorite Season 2 episode, even beating "I’m with stupid." At first, I found it quite relatable with SpongeBob meeting a guy he is a big fan of. Also, I can relate to SpongeBob wanting to join the Jellyspotters. But the way Kevin was to SpongeBob in this episode really bugs me. The few good things I found in this episode were Kevin getting what he deserved, both in the middle and the end, as well as the “don’t touch” joke with Patrick at the beginning, and the good moral at the heart of this episode. But overall, this is easily my least favorite Season 2 episode.
    (20:45)
    #2 Hello Bikini Bottom!
Personally, I found this episode to be an improvement over "Atlantis SquarePantis". Firstly, I really liked Squidward chasing his dreams, and the whole concept of this episode was pretty good. There is some filler, but it’s not as bad as "Atlantis SquarePantis" or even "SpongeBob You’re Fired". My favorite parts are the ending and the Never Give Up song with SpongeBob and Squidward, easily one of the best songs in the whole show. So overall, I found this special to be pretty fun with some amazing songs.
    (24:43)
    #1 Jellyfishing
I would definitely agree with you, Strider, that this is the most overrated SpongeBob episode ever. I honestly feel really bad for Squidward in this episode. So much that I would say this is my least favorite Season 1 Episode just behind “I was a Teenage Gary”, and considering Season 1 has a lot of amazing episodes that’s saying a lot. I cut the crew some slack as this was only the 6th episode of the whole show, but I just felt really bad for Squidward here. The only good thing I found in this episode is when Squidward unleashes the jellyfish at SpongeBob and Patrick in order to get back at them for what he went through in the entire episode, that, along with Patrick’s line, “Yep, he’s still mad.” was pretty funny to me. But overall, this is easily, in my opinion, the most overrated SpongeBob episode.

I have a friend who works at Wendys, and their craziest work story involves the stadium rave from Jellyfish Jam. There were no customers, so as a joke, she decided to put this on the radio. However, it accidentally got on loop, and since customers started showing up again, they were stuck listening to that for multiple hours. 😂

I think you're too harsh on this episode. Jellyfishing is by far a superior episode for how it uses simplicity and doesn't hold back from the direction it wishes to go. Squidward is not a punching bag in this episode. He is just being tortured because he is stuck with Spongebob and Patrick. These two characters are naive and they think from their perspective they're helping Squidward. This is why it works so well. I heavily disagree with you.

I definitely agree with The Sponge Who Could Fly. It's mean spirited, and it reminds me of the kids who used to bully me at school. I also agree with Valentine's Day, as Patrick was AWFUL there. But aside from the few flop episodes, I still adore Spongebob. Funny thing is, Spongebob also kind of led me to another special interest of mine: mascots. Whether it be fast food, theme park, drink, or toy, I just adore mascots. Strider, I think you should one day make a list on the Top Ten Obscure Mascots. There's so many mascots out there that it could make an interesting list. I have a few REALLY obscure ones that would fit though: the 1970s incarnation of Jack and The Jack In The Box Bunch [Jack In The Box Restaurants, only 3 ads are on UA-cam: Baseball, In The Park, and Jack In The Box Animated Commercial 1970], Matty Mattel and Sister Belle [Mattel Toys, interestingly they even hosted a show called Matty's Funday Funnies], Hasbro [Hasbro Toys 50s and 60s, interesting fact, voiced by Mae Questel who also did Olive Oyl from Popeye and Betty Boop], and Gilbert Giddyup and Speedy Mcgreedy [Hardee's 1970s]. Also, Cool Spot from 7-Up. His voice even sounds a bit like Boo's voice!

I've met someone who has the characteristics of Spongebob in my highschool. He was often goofy and even had the teeth like Spongebob. I shouldn't judge a person, I know.
But weirdly enough, many girls liked him. He was bullied by some people as they called him "Timmy Turner" but we did have a strong friendship together.
He even went on to embrace it instead of fighting against it. He went on stage wearing Spongebob's clothes and then started to sing to us in his poorly made version of Spongebob's voice.
While I know he did sound awful. I have to give him credit- he did it all to stand against bullying and to show that he loves himself. He inspired me and my most favorite memory is when he kissed me during a time when I was at my lowest. It happened quickly and then he went off to Bootcamp. I haven't seen him since highschool but from what I've heard from friends. He still embraces his spongebob-ness and reminds everyone to stay hydrated.

I remember having friends that played a little too rough or got carried away with a game as a kid. I think that’s the reason why SpongeBob and Patrick left Squidward alone to have fun in The Snowball Effect. Perhaps the unfortunate truth is that even when Squidward tries to have fun with a game, he takes it too seriously. That time, it was too much for his neighbours and they wanted a warm and cozy break, so I actually found the ending to be ironically funny.

I have to say a lot of these episodes I do love and wish that Phantom Strider loved.
Yet he was so good at explaining how he felt about them that it became very understandable to why they were overrated to him.
By the way, I feel like Squidward deserves all of the credit in the Pizza Delivery episode for sticking up for SpongeBob because it shows that he understands him the most and knows how much SpongeBob longingly wanted the customer to love the pizza.
But, man, I loved the number one pick of this!
    Oh my gosh!
It’s hard for me to hate anything so I do have love for that jellyfishing episode but I always felt bad for Squidward in that episode and always felt extremely uncomfortable.
I was six when SpongeBob first came out and unlike everybody I didn’t like the SpongeBob SquarePants show at all.
There were episodes that creeped me out like that Jellyfishing episode, the episode where SpongeBob cheats on his boating test (I hated seeing that antenna from the walkie talkie sticking out of his head and knowing that it was inside of him, the episode where Squidward doesn’t take care of Gary and the medicine turns him and SpongeBob into snails, and Plankton’s actual debut episode where he actually controls SpongeBob’s brain.
I didn’t become a fan of the show till I was eight thanks to my best friend, Jill, for getting me into it. Lol
So yeah that Jellyfishing episode deserves that number one spot.😉

I think the point that “Does every Season 1-3 episode get an automatic 8-10 rating?” is pretty accurate.
Personally, I think it’s not just that people want an easier categorization, or even simple elitism; this may just be me, but I can see people _wanting_ to think that’s true.
Like, of course a majority of classic SpongeBob is awesome, but it’s a relatively short era compared to the rest of the show(5 years compared to the 20+ it’s been on; that’s only 1/4, and as the show goes on, even smaller!). And considering how long it’s been, and the changing culture around the development, it can be tough to let go of one of the episodes as a flop, since there’s only so many to love so dearly in the first place. Of course, this can go in reverse logic when it comes to good Season 6-8/current/spin-off episodes too, though not as emotionally weighted down by the relative scarcity.
Relative calculations are a crazy thing. You’d think ~100 episodes would be good enough, but considering so many usually-worse ones came after, it feels like the seasons are in measly 13s. I’m a fan of Problem Solverz(yes I am being 100% serious with that statement, my profile picture’s even from *my own* fan art of it) and that show only has ~30 episodes, but I’m fine with it, because I can just make fanworks of it whenever I want and people will consider it the best of the series, since people never really liked the original to begin with and mine is considered the “bad show turned good” version. Not many SpongeBob fans have that much relative stranglehold to reboot the classic era’s standards. I’m sure some have, but that’s a whole lot of people to impress(as well as the pressure of copyright takedowns if it’s _too_ popular, of course).
TL;DR: I’m not saying the “every classic episode is good” mentality is nostalgia blindness, but I can see why people want to think that it’s true just so they can get more out of the classic era itself. Confusing to put into words, I know.
