What may be going through their heads as this was happening? The player sends only the two out; the very first who arrived and got the news of their fallen ancestor. Dismas and Reynauld were but simple men bound together by distant heritage, with little knowledge of what would befall them. Though, they became stronger together. Along with other people of distant family or just simple mercenaries out for gold. The two had steeled minds. Dismas' dagger and pistol polished to an almost mirror finish, and Reynauld's sword and armor cleansed with holy water. As they would fight however, the madness and insanity of the situation continued to creep into the Crusader's mind, no matter how steeled he is. The idea to lose your mind could spell ruin for the two. His resolve was virtous by nature however. Clinging onto the religion he knew from his earliest point, as well as the companionship of his fellow man. The madness was truly being turned into a force, after all. The boost in morale and faith of Reynauld offered great aid in Dismas' fight. Despite cosmic powers at hand, puncturing and re-arranging the very flesh they're made of, the will of Dismas let not the dagger and pistol slip out of his hand. Quite in contrary in fact. With every attempt at Dismas' life, the almost razor sharp dagger would tear and sever the unnatural flesh in response...Until the very thing that was said to destroy this very earth was slain...By two men of epic proportions.

not really. In the end, you did manage to avert the crisis, and kill the heart of Darkness. Sure you didn't kill it forever, but you were able to continue on the legacy of "the family of man" until the next time the heart wakes up again. Thats why your character would then task their lineage to continue on the task of killing the heart of Darkness again.
I love how the dialogue about sacrificing loads of heroes to get there doesn't change even though this run has zero deaths. I feel like the devs never expected anyone to manage that so they didn't have any alt dialogue made.
I mean, even if no heroes actually died, you still put them through hell for your own ends, irreparably damaging them in the process . Like how when you send them on darkest dungeon quests, they have nightmares and want to die after they return from them. They may be fine physically, but their minds are forever damaged
Even if none of your heroes died, you still killed a bunch of enemies on your way to the heart, so you still feed it with death You defeated the heart though, so in the end you bought more time instead of accelerating the end.

Things I wish the ending contained: The reaction of the Hamlet's residents when Reynauld and Dismas went after the Heart of Darkness and both returned victorious and alive. Clearing even one of the leadup missions maximizes everybody's morale, so hearing that a generation gets to live not in the shadow of the Heart's curse would make for quite an evening in the Hamlet. It's not in keeping with the games Lovecraftian themes, but victory is not a hollow notion to those villagers.
Man the tiny detail of the finger drumming the ancestor does adds so much. You get this impression of a calculative person, willing to do whatever it takes and putting acquisition of knowledge front and paramount above safety or humanity.

I think it would be so dope if in Darkest Dungeon 2 the only holy place was The Estate. A distinct reminder to all future heroes that all evil can be eradicated
Perhaps after defeating the “outgrowth” of the entity under the manor, the area becomes sanctified, the sun (or whatever the DD equivalent of god is) blesses it, and it becomes a new area of peace & prosperity. The hamlet becomes a town, then a great city, those who labored in the dungeons have finally cleared them of their filth, rebuilding the estate, burning down the weld/swamp, etc. But then the ancestors son finds something, a way to permanently kill the fiend beneath the surface.... He brings his group of grizzled veterans to the mountains of old, from which a way to reach the beast, and subsequently slay it, can be found...

I thought it was weird that the ancestor would be fighting you in the end. Until the "sporadic reproduction" happened, combined with the "we are the same". The heart of darkness, creator of all, can re-create anything it wishes to, and anything it consumes. So the ancestor, in his fervent search for whatever he was searching for, stumbled upon what was basically a God, and was consumed by it.

Dismas was always my favorite. Moving fast, vast range and on my playthroughs most reliable one. Even if expedition goes sour he still can turn everything around... Somebody told me that was the name of a penitent thief, crusified next to Jesus. If only I knew.
Okay now we need to establlish what's cannon. - Party consisting of Dismas, Reynauld, Plauge doctor, and Vestal defeated the heart of Darkness with Reynauld and Vestal being the sacrefices according to some official poster. - Or Dismas and Reynauld stumbling into the last darkest dungeon, getting high on crystal dust and defeating the heart before anything could happen. Personally I prefer the second option.
I like this, the final battle plays out very fittingly. It's left ambiguous whether the heroes faced a great old one or eldritch god or just some deep hallucination borne of madness. Did the whole thing happen in the depths of the darkest dungeon or was it all in their heads? Regardless, the story is at least partially driven by what goes on in the heads of the heroes. What they feel, believe, and imagine becomes practically real as their minds affect how they experience the world, regardless of whether it is actually physically happening or not. By that logic, if they truly believe they can triumph over whatever they face in the dungeon, then at the very least their chances of surviving greatly improve, even if they stand before a god. If a paradoxical thing that should not be can indeed exist, then nothing is truly impossible, even defeating that which defies understanding.
**Dimas shanking everything that touches him, shuffling around and hitting pistol shots at zero range.** Reynauld standing dumbstruck with a banner: _"Yeah, you go man... I'll just give you moral support from over here..."_
Ok so the final boss is Nyarlathotep. The ancestor said: "I was no longer a man, I became an avatar of the crawling chaos" referring to him siding with the evil now, and "the crawling chaos" is one of the names if Nyarlathotep. And the final boss shapeshifts alot. Just like Nyarlathotep. That's p good attention to detail. Good job Red Hook.
I remember my first try on this game on the normal difficulty before all the DLC's musketeer, shieldbreaker, flaggelant, crimson court, farmstead etc. and when I reached this part when the ancestor says "in petty pursuit of family redemption you consume those who rally to your cause-" and I just chuckled a bit since none of my heroes have died lol i got lucky I guess then I lost the 2 cause of the thing that automatically consumes half your party depending on its life

With every attempt at Dismas' life, the almost razor sharp dagger would tear and sever the unnatural flesh in response...Until the very thing that was said to destroy this very earth was slain...By two men of epic proportions.

He brings his group of grizzled veterans to the mountains of old, from which a way to reach the beast, and subsequently slay it, can be found...

but they're both batman
i love how the ending is both motivating and just nihilistic at the same time
It's almost too poetic, the first two who came into this land now carry their past momentoes facing the eldritch end of time~
I like this, the final battle plays out very fittingly.
Rise a Hundred times and you'll be struck down A Hundred Plus One Monster.
