Another pep talk, just when it was needed. I’m currently battling with leaf miners and single handedly keeping the nematode industry on its feet! So demoralising when you see the damage they cause and I’ve been feeling like a failure for not being able to control the problem. You have just reminded me that despite the whole garden looking like a mess, I’m still harvesting food for the table. So thank you, again, for the reminder to just stop being so hard on myself and to focus on the positives. You really are rather good for morale.

You are so right Eli, too many people worry about what others think. Last years garlic and onions all rotted, this year garlic and onions all rotted, I'm fed up with the weather, true but I know it's not my fault so I'm hoping for 3rd time lucky and a drier autum/winter and spring and lushious garlic and onions next year. Love the vlogs and your way of vlogging, you truely deserved your award.

Eli, you have the most timely videos. Just a day or two ago I was beating myself up because I still don’t have all the perennial weeds pulled from my vegetable garden. Not taking into account that 3 years ago I had major surgery, and the weeds got ahead of me, (due to the fact that I used grass clippings which were full of dandelion seeds as a mulch on the beds) so the second year I had a magnificent crop of weeds. That year I just gave up, but this year I’m fighting back. It’s slow going, but damn I’m determined to get her done! For a 74 year old, I now think I’m doing not too badly. Thanks for the encouragement!

Bless you so much for this word of encouragement. We all have our garden struggles. This week we had temps in the upper 90's F. TOO HOT! Some of my garden suffered because of it. I do grow for farmer's market, so there is pressure I put on myself to produce crops that are "just right" for selling. Well, I guess it will sell or it won't but I still love to spend time in the garden...when it's not so hot :)

Glad you mentioned about social media and to bring yourself into a reality check. I’ve found myself going down that rabbit hole and you start thinking WTH did I do wrong. We are all struggling the affects of weather changes-it’s more extreme then ever.
I’ve never had troubles with tomatoes in all my decades of gardening until this year. And I grew a lot of hybrids thankfully. The blight arrived in July and not the normal August timeframe and they are short and skinny. I may be able to salvage since the rain let up and sun returns. Thankful for dusty soil as it dried out quick enough I could get some liquid fertilizer on them to boost them up before storms Sunday. We have extreme heat indexes coming also for few days and shade fabric is needed and to do anything requires a lot of mosquito spray and head net. It’s been miserable to garden this summer.
There are some wins, but like you we have had Way too much rain and rust and mildew are an issue here also. Never had rust on hollyhocks until this year and I also added two more varieties 🙄 now it looks like I may need rust resistant varieties or spray copper early. We just harvested garlic and I was concerned they and onions would rot, but again thankful for dusty soil.
You both do a great job at managing your what you have-celebrate!🎉. And more mentioning of quit comparing ourselves with other more than perfect shots we see-just remember you aren’t seeing the whole picture.😉. There’s enough crap going on in this world then to beat ourselves up over our greatest stress reliever-The Garden.

Great message Eli! I have physical disabilities, so my head makes promises that my body can't keep half the time. Watching videos just makes me think "but when do they EAT all that stuff?" rather than "my garden doesn't look like that!". The first year I moved here my family planted tonnes of veg for me that the local field mice really enjoyed before I was able to harvest, so now I just do a couple of edible things (including supermarket chives dotted around the borders, because pollinators love those flowers, and supermarket mint in containers for a cheeky mojito or iced tea) and loads of flowers/plants. In the same vein as your message, I've just ordered lots of seeds for winter/spring and when I'm queen of the world websites and catalogues will HAVE to state how many plants they've crammed in for those pictures, because they're pretty much not like reality.

We have had some good harvests this year though. 3 sisters are doing great in the newly re purposed sand pit bed.
Can't complain really even though the weather is crappy and the slugs and snails have taken over the garden. I think it is important to just try and think of the positives and what is working and what is also under your control to change to improve things.

When you know rain is coming, set them out from the house on the ground to get a good drink. I did the opposite yesterday. We are having torrential downpours today and tomorrow here in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, as a result of a hurricane. I moved all my plants in pots under the eaves or in the garage. Just trying to be a good plant mom. Hope the all survive.

Great inspirational video! Last year I would say I failed or didn't succeed with something. This year, I blame the weather or the plant. Saying that I'm not impressed with it's performance is better for my mental health than blaming myself. Still, I'm able to think if I can do something different, so a similar plant might impress me later. All "fails" are opportunities to learn.

Oh my... I LOVE my Calibracoa!! (Kal-uh-brick-oh-a)
Like a petunia, except for you you never have to deadhead them and they don't hardly ever look bad and they never quit!! So much more Hardy.
Between those and my discovering how strong and gorgeous begonias are... I always have blooms!. I've also recently discovered how gorgeous caladiums are. And Autumn sedum. I love my annuals but I want them to be just as strong as the perennials that I have fallen for! I wish I had a picture that I could show you here, but I think I need to do a quick flower tour!
I am very ashamed of the parts of my backyard that I don't touch at all. I've basically got areas that I'm growing hay. Tall as my waist untouched grass. I just don't have the time to tend those areas. They are around the perimeter and my bunny & kitty love exploring through there. I have to give myself a pardon every time I look at it. The garden is ever-changing. We need to give ourselves the grace to move along with it. It does what it does and it doesn't always look great, so neither can we!!

Still trying to get kohlrabi to grow. Tho the leek seedlings I repotted have grown a lot more and will have to go into the final planter soon. And we had quite a few strawberries which are now jam. Little bit disappointed but also happy we got something so far after the abysmal Spring and the non-happening Summer.

I pulled the remainder of my garlic today and my 2 elephant garlic (first time growing). Elephant garlic is very big, but has started to split open sadly - I'm assuming I harvested it a bit too late(?) Also Noticed a couple leaf miner about on some, but I'm not too worried about those as I will be able to see if these any on the cloves when I use them (I peeled back a couple layers and the garlic bulbs looked fine, so hopefully it was just on the outer layer).
With the Ele garlic, I read online that you can just split the cloves, peel and freeze them. However, people on a veg fb page have said theirs were like that and they just dried them like normal and the cloves still kept fine for a long time, so not sure what would be best - what do you reckon?
