    Planting the side shoots is really useful for overwintering. I kill the plant when it gets to big and start over with a side shoot. I got some hybrid plants as a gift a few years ago and since I'm to cheap to buy the seeds every year I just clone the original plants. They require suprisingly little in terms of grow lights since all I need is for one cutting to survive until spring.

    • @eliandkate

      That’s a good point Harry… cloning… perfect 👌

    • @andymerrett
      @andymerrett 4 місяці тому

      Ahh you just answered my question about whether you can overwinter these as plants, presumably you then get a massive head start next year as well. That's assuming you want to grow the same varieties :)

    • @harrybrandelius7816
      @harrybrandelius7816 4 місяці тому +1

      @@andymerrett I never plan to get a head start, the plan is to keep them as small as possible. However, invariably I end up with a jungle in the basement. This year I needed help bringing some of them up the stairs from the basement. They were to tall to fit vertically so we had to remove the stakes, lay them down and bend them while going up the spiral stairs...

    Needed this video this week. My tomatoes seem to have exploded with side shoots this week. When you miss one for a week or so, it’s shocking how big they get (and how quickly) and can look a bit confusing. I’ve had a few big ones that I’ve been tempted to “do a Steve” and propagate the side shoots but realised I have no room for any more anyway 😂
    So many of mine have split on the main stem this year.
    Enjoyed this Eli. Thank you. 😊

      Similar problem with hot summers in Northern California, the tomatoes really struggle with temps over 90-95F. There are a couple good garden channels growing in AZ, Southern California, etc that I have found helpful. The main thing they do is use shade cloth in the summer so that is on my to-do list for next year. This year I'm only growing one tomato plant so I can test.

    Great how to video Eli, I tried growing new tomato plants from side shoots before and they grew lovely but I didn't get to harvest the tomatoes as the fruit set really late in the season, like you said though, great way to multiply plots if you have a long growing season. Take care

    Or you let 5 or 6 leaders grow on an indeterminate plant and then stop it (top it off) at whatever height you want. Treat it like a determinate from then on. I did it with Sweet Million last year and had over 3 times the yield of just one stem.

    I found the first little tomato growing just today! I don't normally have high hopes for the early ones since the plants so small but it'll be interesting to see how it does. I try to keep up with my pruning but when time gets away from me what's a second or third leader! Tangled mess and more leaves. Also mine got about 10ft tall last year so lower and lean is the way for me.

    • @wormulous
      @wormulous 4 місяці тому

      Oh have to add! Need to figure out that breaker stage that people keep telling us all about and that a tomato vine ripened is literally the same as counter ripened "or so I've heard" that tomatoes stop getting ANYTHING from the plant (nutrients etc) after it gets to that point. I'm certainly doing an experiment this year on that one.
      Also for people doing double or triple leaders you can always double clip (let's face it we have 100s of them) the main stem to make sure you know where it is all the time.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  4 місяці тому

      The breaker stage is when the colour just tips over from green to not green.
      Have to be honest, I definitely taste a marked difference in home ripened versus “counter” ripened, but I know other folk don’t so I say go with whatever makes life easier
