  • A few shots from a trip to Yosemite with the family by Adam Garcia with Short Stop Studios.
    Shot on a BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera in RAW film mode with a 12-24mm F4 Tokina lens and Metabones Speed Booster. I cut the video in Premiere CS6 and graded in Davinci light.
    The shots were a mixture of hand-held, Tripod and a Edelkrone Plus slider.

    Had a UA-camr ask me some questions about the lens and BMPCC so I have included my answer below:
    Thanks for checking out the video! Had lots of fun making it. I apologize as you have caught my mistake. I was actually using a Tokina 12-24 F4 for Nikon. I typically use Canon L-Series glass however I stumbled upon a Metabones for Nikon lenses and was able to pick one up last minute.
    As far as having any issues with the speed booster or BMPCC, I am making a review to cover my thoughts on the camera however I can give you a quick review. I did not stumble across any issues with the Metabones Speed Booster. I did not have any contact issues, it did a great job lowering the F-stop from 4 which saved me several times, as well as giving me a wider field of view which I think is the best perk about the adapter. Rather than my 12-24 being a 35-70 (from the cropping of the BMPCC's sensor) it was a 24-50. This allowed me to have much wider shots with the lens I was carrying making it a big life saver seeing as with landscapes you typically want a wide angle.
    As for the BMPCC. If your shooting RAW as I did, you typically can eat through a 32GB card in 6mins of record time. Needless to say I was eating through cards rather quick and had to choose my shots carefully. Also you are only getting about 20-30mins of battery life per battery. I went out with 7 batteries and was able to get by just fine. However I was being very picky about my shots, only shooting 10sec clips, and having very limited Time-lapses.
    Lastly you asked about infinity focus. Because I was outside battling with the bright sun and only a polarizing filter and no ND's I obviously was having to push my F-stops into pretty high numbers. The Metabones adapter does not give you and F stop reading of 1-22 rather it just gives you from F (fully open) to 7. So I am not sure of my exact F-stop measures. Although much of what I had was in focus when I was shooting, it was not an infinity focus. Even being as high as 5 out of 7 on the adapter I was still having to use my focus meters on the BMPCC to pull focus accordingly. Many of my shots were wider shots, although on other shoots following Yosemite I have been able to use the lens for closer shots with thinner depths of focus. You are not going to get as shallow as you would lets say on a full frame DSLR, however this is something I believe is more than worth sacrificing for the WDR and RAW capabilities. As you would a servo lens, if you back up and punch in with the lens you can create thin depths of focus to mimic those looks you get from a DSLR.
    Hope this was some help and I answered all you questions. I will be posting a review soon, I just wanted to experience the BMPCC is several different recording situations to give the best feedback I can about the camera!
    Thanks,
    Adam Garcia

    Incredible shots. This camera or the Micro cinema camera paired with the Kowa Prominar micro 4/3 primes (8,5m ZERO visible distortion, 12mm, 25mm) of the finest Japanese optics would be an absolute killer combo! Definitely be making the switch to micro 4/3 soon. Sharp edge to edge, small and light, best selection of lens, easy conversion to anamorphic, and some if not the best selection of cameras around (BM, GH5...) for the price range.

    That looks brilliant, I'm keen on the bmmcc i have no hesitation after seeing this.

    • @lupinearsenalALT
      @lupinearsenalALT 8 років тому +3

      +tallaganda83 I had a BMPCC but sold it within 30 days. Reason? Too much equipment. For starters, a $700 speed booster is a must. Then you'll need a cage, and let's not forget to mention the abysmal battery life, which one will need to compensate with either a stack of those. The interface is on the laggier side and would not record on any card less that 95 mbps.
      Planning to get the next-gen GH5. 4K is the future and amazing for crop.

    • @tallaganda83
      @tallaganda83 8 років тому +2

      lupinearsenalALT Yeah by the time the blackmagic comes out there will probably be better options anyway, if the GH5 does 12 bit raw and good mbps etc I will strongly consider it, i mostly want it for drone use, and i actually really enjoy editing raw files, but yeah i know the accessories do push the cost up, i like the new DJI zenmuse x5r, it shoots raw 4k but its very pricey.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 8 років тому +1

      +lupinearsenalALT the speed booster and batteriesare needed, everything else is optional if your shooting something like a shortfilm, you want to shoot the best codec and quality, Panasonic cameras are great for event/doccumentary work, where you need to be able to access your options quickly

    • @roanbascoe3422
      @roanbascoe3422 8 років тому +1

      Every camera needs equipment depending what you're using it for, that's just part of the game for the price and the quality you get the bmpcc is a steal, I just got mine off eBay used for less than $600 the gh4 is atleast $1000 on eBay and the gh5 will most likely be higher, the gh4 is a great cam but unless 4K, a flip out screen, the ability to take stills, and better battery life are a deal breaker for you get the bmpcc, all will need a speed booster to get max capabilities, gh4 & 5 will probably need a atomos ninja or shogun to get max capabilities from the 4K on top of the speed booster, you'll need external audio anyway for any camera same thing goes for rigs/stabilizers, but in the end vlog will never be able to touch RAW, now if you aren't a post-production type person then get a gh4/5(when it comes out) but if you want that maximum flexibility to get the image you desire I say get the blackmagic...but that's just my opinion..just look at the footages, the reviews, blogs,etc.

    • @legendp2011
      @legendp2011 8 років тому +1

      ***** because the bmpcc has a 2.88x crop factor (mft is 2x). so even a mft will suffer heavy crop.
      Most people (myself included) are already invested in either Canon or Nikon glass. so it doesn't make sense to sell all of our lenses.

    Great footage but seems like the darks are really pushed down. I recomend you at least 1 MFT lens, the panasonic 14 45, it have a incredible ammount of sharpness on the center of the image (that is one of the few nice points about that cr@p factor. And it have nice stabilization on lens.

      Short Stop Studios I just watched your video again, i really love it and the music and thanks for providing the technical details since i always wondered how the panning is done in such a controlled fashion. How long did it take you to shoot this movie?

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому

      Johan Markus Yes it was a mix of hand held, monopod, tripod, and slider shots. But surprisingly most of it was handheld as it was difficult to lug a tripod, slider, and monopod into some of these places. It was shot over two and half day's in Yosemite National Park. So I must ask, what is Six Dead Hikers?

    • @McDaidUSA
      @McDaidUSA 9 років тому

      Short Stop Studios It is a true story of our misadventure up the four mile trail to glacier point with flashback footage of previous more successful hikes up Half Dome, and some music that I wrote for the movie. One of the hikers in our group who was shooting video of us huddling for warmth just blurted out "Six Dead Hikers" as if that would be the headline for the newspaper story of our demise. So I decided that would be the title of my video.

    Great Video! Loved it, and seeing it a lot of times. I have one question. Did you put some sharpening to the footage in post? If so, when did you the sharpening? When grading in DaVinci? In Premiere Pro or Final Cut? I ask you this because it looks soooo sharp. Sharper than my footage done with my BMPCC.
    Keep you bringing us this kind of nice work!
    Thanks.

    • @ShortStopStudios

      Hi librarecords I did do sharpening in post. After color grading in Davinici light, I would send the final export from Davinci back into premiere and apply a sharpen tool. I typically add anywhere from 10-20%. I believe on Yosemite I added 20%. I am still playing with export options and different codecs to try and find the highest resolution possible for UA-cam.

    Was that the nikon mount Tokina? For what seems like a cheap lens, you seem to have done magic with it (especially 0:11 - 0:15). Very sharp (even though some sharpness added in post). Though I am curious, with some of the shots where the leaves and waterfall seem very soft (1:11-1:13)... did you just slow down the shutter angle to compensate for low-light or something?

    How did you do the timelapses? I thought the BMPCC didn't shoot stills, and I don't think it has the battery life or storage capacity to capture long enough to make one of those timelapses.

      Ian Guevara sorry I missed your questions and apologize for that! You can use twistor with the BMPCC footage. Of course certain shots if there is to much movement it can bug out, just the same as if there is to little movement it will almost look like a frozen image. But I have seen some really great stuff with twistor and the BMPCC!

      There is Rec 709 which is a LUT you can apply as a default to you BMPCC footage in post. But I just went in and manually adjusted the setting for each shot to get the color grading I did. I have a post video and a before and after video on my page if you want to check it out. As for that flash, that is actually a mistake I didn't catch before uploading. It was two frames in the time-lapse that should have been cut, but weren't. Good eye ;p

    can you said me please how you make your render for have nice quality on youtube ? and do you know how have a more biggest battery extern for this BMPCC ? the normal battery is very short :( (sorry for my english)

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому +1

      Hi 00shyriu00, you were asking about my rendering options. I typically either export as a Apple Prores 422 HQ or I go with an H.264 codec such as yosemite. The trick is just to make sure all of the options for quality are maxed out since your going to lose so much info from the compression. If your having a hard time following I am releasing a video review on the BMPCC pretty soon which also goes over my post workflow.
      Also you asked for a good battery solution. Although I have yet to purchase this power option myself, it is what I plan to invest in myself. It uses Canon LP-E6 batteries which are $35 new and $10 for the amazon knock offs. But there are options to adapt to almost any battery if you search enough. Here is the link below.
      Power option for BMPCC:

      Short Stop Studios Thank you very much for your answer .i have 2 others questions please :) Do you think the canon battery are better than blackmagic/nikon battery ? Do you know how many time the bmpcc can filming with 2 battery canon ?

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому

      00shyriu00 I love questions!
      Now just to let you know the BMPCC batteries and/or the Nikon equivalent batteries typically get you a 20-30min run time (the Nikon ones last a bit longer because they hold more mAH's). I have 6 BMPCC batteries and 1 Nikon equivalent, with those I am just able to get by a day of shooting. The link I sent you holds 4 Canon LP-E6 batteries which will charge the BMPCC for 6-8hrs so if you have 4 Canon batteries you will last all day. Have 8 and you will be good for two whole days of shooting.
      Because I already own 9 Canon LP-E6 batteries it makes a no brainer power option for me. But even if you don't own Canon batteries you can get 8 Canon batteries and the power option link I sent you for around $200 which is still way less than the Switronix battery options which start at $250, as well as more compact and versatile.

    How did you setup your WB? i find it so hard on the BMPCC

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому

      Hi 22trips22, for Yosemite I was just going with the typical 5600K for sunlight and 3200k for shaded areas lower in the mountains. However you shouldn't experience that much difficulty with you WB if you are shooting RAW. When shooting RAW your image has very little saturation and allows you to bend the colors pretty far. Even if you have bad settings in camera, because of the flexibility of RAW, its relatively easy to save even some of the worst white balanced shots.

    • @peterpanda7506

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  7 років тому +1

      peter panda the major reason to purchase this camera is to utilize the RAW workflow so look into if you haven't already. Lastly, be aware the setbacks of this camera (as all cameras do have) is the battery and the crop factor of the sensor. So be aware you will need to have or purchase lenses that are pretty wide and low f stop. As well as an external power option.

      Short Stop Studios Sweet! Between the A7SII and the A6300 which one did you prefer (video only)? And what lens?

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  8 років тому +1

      Well its funny because the a6300 is actually sharper than the A7SII if you didn't know! But the A7SII is a fuller camera (more options, inputs/outputs, etc). Yet at the end of the day... I would prob say the a6300. There is so much camera for so little money.

    • @AMAStudios
      @AMAStudios 8 років тому

      Short Stop Studios Yea I've seen it myself. What lenses do you use?

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  8 років тому

      I own a variety of lenses from brand to focal length. However if your on a tight budget, the kit lens (16-50mm F3.5-F5.6) is a decent buy to get you started and you can get it used pretty cheap. If you have a larger budget, I like primes a lot such on the Rokinon, Canon, and Zeiss cinema lenses for video. But sometimes the zoom lenses are more practical on set, just depends on the shoot.

      I used the MFT to Nikon speed-booster. However there is one specifically made for the BMPCC and then there is just the universal one. I used the universal one.

    • @Ndavila991
      @Ndavila991 9 років тому +1

      Short Stop Studios Ok. So if I used the one that's specifically made for the BMPCC, could I still use the glass you used? I'm really interested in out beautiful it came out paired with the RAW. *thumbs up*

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому +1

      Nico Davila thanks! I really appreciate that. Yes, I believe the once specifically for the BMPCC actually has an extra piece that puts the Metabones right up against the sensor of the BMPCC. So the only difference is between the adapter and the camera, so any Nikon lens, such as the one I used, will work.
      I now am using a Canon EF Metabones Speed-booster with my Canon L-series lenses and I am still getting stunning visuals. Obviously there are just minor differences like color, Lens Flare colors, and sharpness as you would see in any lens change. I did enjoy the Nikon lens for its wide capabilities as I was shooting landscapes. However I think ultimately I will be selling my Canon L-series lenses for the Rokinon Cine Lens kit. They look great, they are cheap, and they are Cine lenses not photography lenses which the Nikon and Canon lenses I was using, are.

    • @Ndavila991
      @Ndavila991 9 років тому

      Short Stop Studios Awesome man I appreciate the info! I'm new when it comes to which glass I can use. I really think I'm going to pickup the BMPCC to Nikon speedbooster. Mainly, because I want that "35" mm look. But I'm trying to see which lenses are going to be more useful to me.
      Because with that speedbooster changing the speed of all the slower lenses it opens up so many more inexpensive opportunities. Does the Rokinon only work for the MFT mount? Would you recommend any sharp lenses for shooting quality work on the Nikon G mount?

    • @ShortStopStudios
      @ShortStopStudios  9 років тому +1

      Nico Davila well I'm more of a Canon guy myself. I purchased the BMPCC used and it came with the Metabones adapter. However I thought it was to Canon not Nikon. So when I found out I had to borrow that Nikon lens last minute from a buddy as I was going to Yosemite the next day. So really I was forced to shoot with that lens and that lens alone. Once I got back I sold the adapter and got the Canon one.
      The Rokinon Cine Lens Kit is cheap, its sharp, I like the colors, and they are primes (or fixed mm lenses) which typically give you a more filmic look. They offer them in EF (or Canon) mount, Nikons's mount, and I believe they are about to start offering PL.
      The issue with the BMPCC is the crop from the sensor. So typically I see I am using wider lenses then what I normally use with my full frame Canon DSLR. I think your going to really want to concentrate on glass as wide as 8mm to 50mm. Obviously with the lowest F-stop you can afford.
      Check my short review on the BMPCC if you haven't already:
