HOW I COLOR GRADED VENICE
• How I color BMPCC Foot...
I ended 2015 with the trip I had dreamed about for years. Venice, Italy. As a kid, I would sit and listen to my mimi’s story’s about riding gondolas and dancing in St. Marks Square. I was hooked. I debated on this, but with it being the most romantic place in the world, naturally I have to include some kind of mushy story to go along with it.
The first gifts I gave to my girlfriend Fay were a clock and a journal. The clock was to always stay on my time while she was in London, and the journal was for her to document all her travels and experiences along the way. The cover of the journal, tastefully chosen by yours truly, was St. Marks Square in Venice. Little did I know that a year to the day I gave her both of those things, we would be flying out of London on our way to Italy, all planned by her.
In one year, my dream turned into reality. I cant even tell you how excited that makes me for this next year.
Friends, here’s Venice as seen by me.
Best,
Jordan
I've finally made a video about how I colored the BMPCC footage! I'll put a link in the description. Let me know if it helps you out!
Jordan Thiem which camera equipment you use buddy for this video.
been waiting for this. thank u :)
Friccckkkiinnn Amazing!!!!!
Superb video, still stands up against most of the stuff shot now. The one thing I can never get is how you get the videos to look so good on UA-cam. I've tried various software with varying settings and I can't get this kind of quality.
@@dazzdeadmeadow Yes! That's also my question. I have a BMPC and Resolve 17. In windows version, the H24 exporting is not quite good, it introduces some extra noise to the underexposed parts which were not present on original footage. And when uplading to youtube, there's more compression and the result is normally unprofessional...the noise is thus converted in artifacts and looks awfull. It is something I don't know how to resolve.
Absolutely Stunning. Does any one else feels like no other camera can produce this image in 2023?
I don't know, remember that digital bolex?
2024 and this is still sublime. Gorgeously captured, composed, and arranged.
Thanks I love that little camera
Probably the best film I’ve ever seen made on the BMPCC. Wonderful.
Thank you Philip! Appreciate you stopping by.
Without a doubt some of the best prores(of any flavor) footage i've seen out of this camera. Hell, it's better than most raw footage i've seen.
I'm watching this more than 4 years later and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic filming, editing, and color grading.
Thank you mate!
2020 I'm still watching... Going to start using my BMPCC again after many years
Ty Lou same!
Ah, thats the way to get the smoothest tracking shots, dig an intricate network of canals and just float on past 😂.
Beautiful work ❤
There’s something I really love about the black magic aesthetic. Can’t really explain it
Masterpiece. The music fits perfect and i love the pan with the gondola driver.
This is the most beautiful video on Venice I've ever seen! It made me feel emotional! Great job mate!
Thanks Denis!
OMG! This is simply stunning. You had my hooked from the beginning. Incredible!!
this is amazing.. i wanted to cry over how beautifully this was shot.
Thanks M, Venice is a magical place.
This is absolutely stunning, honestly gave me chills and the grade is just perfect!! Subscribed!
Thanks Josh! I need to take this camera out more often. Glad you enjoyed it!
Jordan, this is beautiful but the story behind it is even better.
Enjoy the rest of the script buddy.
All the best.
Thank you Borja, sounds like you got exactly what I was going for. Much love.
I mean it was all so good but the first scene with the clock and sound design... nailed it!
This is a masterpiece, the image and the music are simply perfect.
Thank you, I'm happy you appreciate it.
0:55 that shot alone blew me away, good work!
Jordan, every now and then, the music, the scenes along with the mood hit a creative energy in ones soul, in your case a baseball bat struck you hard !!! Maybe the best BMPC video I have ever viewed completely. Bravo Bravo !
Larry Groesbeck thank you Larry, that’s very kind of you! It means a lot
Dude this was amazing! I absolutely loved the colour grading and how well the music blended with your video! Keep it up!
Thank you Marcus!
Jordan, one of the best travel films I have seen, you clearly took time to find the right music, your matching cuts and flow is excellent (especially hard when searching through footage from holidays) the right camera for the task and despite other cool details I have missed, the colour grading is immaculate, well done!
Those first 30 seconds were really compelling. The edit and music made me really interested to see what was going to happen.
God bless BMPCC !!! jaja Beautiful tiny gold camera
Amen!
I legit want to trade my 4k for the original. It just looks better.... hard to describe. The lower resolution is actually welcomed imo. AMAZING job Jordan!
Beautiful composition and movements. It’s such a pleasure to watch till the end!
Great footage but I'm noticing some weird vertical line glitch in the film, noticable at 1:25 through 1:37 and 4:19 through 4:33.
It's at the top of the screen and slightly left of the center if you can't find it.
probably the lens
Read the comments it was a defective sensor issue. He had to send the camera back to BM and get a replacement copy.
Honestly, I didn't mind it tho. Added a bit of extra film aesthetic in there maybe
Hmmm, it's weird. I thought it was something to do with the grading.
The only reason I said that was because when I was grading some Alexa Mini footage in Da Vinci Resolve, those lines started coming through. HMMM, and it wasn't there on the raw ProRes footage.
This is amazing dude. How you are still on 501 Subs is beyond me! So much better than most travel videogs out there.....this actually has a story in the shooting and editing. beautiful work mate. Keep it up. Subbed
not enough content
Absolutely amazing and beautiful, I inspire to make videos such as this. Just watching this makes me want to cry much more with appreciation for life. The eyes truely are a gift in beholding the beauty of mother nature and all its walks of life. You nailed it and this is exactly why I want to become a film maker. I want to capture, create, and share masterpieces of life and the simple moments we have. Thank you for sharing your journey. Diffinetly liked, shared, and subscribed.
I really enjoyed watching the cinematic film look of this camera. Very nicely done!
I'm still blown away by this. and the footage that comes from the bmpcc. it really looks more like a 35mm analog film, than a digital camera. the kontast and unsharpen picture, but still detailed and beutiful. Really nice colorgrading as well. Stunning!
I prepair to got to Venice in 4 weeks. And now I have another idea of filming this beauty place. Your video is so stunning and the edit fits perfect to these old town. Compliment!
Fantastic footage, editing and grading I agree with some comments on the OG bmpcc beating the s#%& out of current pro-grade cameras.
Agreed, it definitely has earned its place in my camera bag
I love my bmpcc4k, but this really does look filmic. The color and dynamic range is here, without being overly sharp, and I like that. Beautiful.
Finally an honest man who tells us about his methods Osiris Filmconvert. Beautiful film, very well done! And humble thanx for sharing the way you did it.
Beautiful, brings me right back to my holiday there. I'll watch this again and again!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Mi video favorito con la bmpcc !!
The dynamic range is just stunning
It really is stunning.
Jordan Thiem i just heard today there will be a bmpcc 4k announcement. I hope they will fix the low light performance a bit and than you've the ultimate mobile cinema setup!
This is amazing Jordan. Amazing. If I didn't juat watch ypur video saying this was ypur first time using it, I wouldn't have believed you.
Very wonderful shots. I enjoyed watching it a lot. Inspired by your
video for new shooting with my camera. I subscribe and like you
Thank you Artyom! Your films look great
Such a great cinematography. Every second of this film is beautiful. Keep it up. Cheers.
God bless you for making this.
I went to Venice last October for my honeymoon. Your film brings back some amazing memories for me. Excellent work!
Absolute Masterpiece! Thanks for this!
Own a BMCC. This video made me pull the trigger on the pocket version. Beautifully composed video man.
Thanks Michael! It's pretty amazing to see how many people enjoyed it, especially because it was something I wanted to film for such a long time. Cheers!
2019 who is watching?
me
@@JordanThiem and me ) nice work! sound and footage are awesome
@@alexemm Thanks for the kind words Alex! I love this little camera. I'm sure the 4k and 6k versions have their advantages, but I still use the original alongside my RED all of the time. Hope it helped!
@@JordanThiemwartching twice a week :)))
2020
this is breathtaking, may I ask what your render settings are?
How on Earth are there any dislikes on this work of art?
2021 still watching
wow wow wow, hahaha maaan this is deep. this is art, my god, Cinema.
Why am i just now finding this masterpiece?! Amazing work seriously!!
Thanks Cooper!
So does this camera have this aspect ratio built in? Not exactly sure how to ask that question, lol. I'm working wit h a GH4 and I simply don;t like the colors from Panasonic. I'm thinking of buying a used original pocket camera.
You deserve subscribe button sir....I wish you will become best filmmaker and all glory will comes to you... Good luck sir
I've got a GH5, but the images I'm seeing here make me want to sell it right now. I'll prob keep it for most of my work, it makes my life easier, but for personal projects I'm planning on picking one of these up. Sheesh. Why is everyone (myself included) freaking out about the xt3, z6, S1, eos R, etc? Have we really become lazy enough to sacrifice image for ease of use? Forget specs, this video beats the crap out of everything I've seen from those other cameras. Are there drawbacks? Sure. I get it, it doesn't work for everyone. Still...
Excellent work, Jordan!
Gosh. Cinematic look jusf like that??? This is so fricken cool.. Im in a shock.
Thank you! Hope it inspires
it gives me the feeling of Venice I visited year ago, you can feel cinematic vibes, great work!
Thank you Matt! Your videos look great
crazy how this is shot with a 500 dollar Chinese camera. you are very talented and black magic open the doors for alot of low budget inspiring film makers.
Thank you David its a great camera!
This is the best footage I've ever seen with the BMPCC.
Amazing work please teach us how you did this.
Hey Scott I have another video on my channel called "coloring BMPCC footage" that might help you out!
brilliant work. I'm in love with the cinematography. You have a good eye!
Thank you!
Unbeatable image quality and character. Love mine and will never get rid of it. Nothing competes with this image even in 2020 IMO.
I agree! I need to use mine more often
Great film! Yes, dreams can turn to reality :-)
I thought the low light performance struggled. However, your composition shone through. I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Amazing Pictures! You should upscale it with the superscale function in resolve to 4K! In Connection with this footage the results are sure amazing!
Gorgeous pictures brother. Even though that camera is getting old, it holds up very well!
HUNTR Film i agree man, been using mine for my videos
This video is why im thinkn about getn an old bmpcc even tho i have the 4k
I just got mine in the mail! The new 4k and 6k don't have the 16mm sensor. This is still the best bang for your buck.
Amy Amir best 1080 camera alive! No picture matches it
I am so exciting to use it.
Fantastic! A question: what focal lenght you use the most on the zoom in that video? 😄 i’m doing hard researching for my gear
Hey Jordan what an awesome video. by far the best footage i've seen. even better than philip blooms. Would it be possible for you to do a small video on how you went about colorgading it and exposing? that would be so helpful to so many of us. Thanks in advance.
Hey Javier, yes I will look into that. It seems this had a pretty good response and if I remember correctly the color grade was very simple.
Stunning! You did an amazing job shooting this. Despite the fact that I've moved on to shooting 4K, this footage makes me want to pick up a BMPCC.
Thanks a lot! There are a lot of limitations with the BMPCC, but I think when used in the right way, you can't beat it. Probably some cheap used ones out there by now!
This was absolutely amazing. You have some skills!
Loved it. Great job!! What I missed was some kind of "italian" music to make it more immersive. But your images and editing are superb!
Lovely footage.
i dont know if i commented yet, but this IS INSANE! HOLY SHait!
Good quality work! Nice one
Hi! How do you think, today this camera is still competitive compared with new photocameras (Fuji X-T30)? Or Fuji can do the same picture? what do you advise for
staged video, short films, within 1000$? Sorry for my english!
Video is awesome.
2021 still watching what a great camera
Fantastic footage and it's unreal how inexpensive this camera is (as far as camera's go) obviously a really nice (expensive) lens goes a long way to getting footage this good. Beautiful city
What lenses did you use and also and your opinion would you recommend the blackmagic 4K or 6K I have the regular pocket and the cinema
beautiful shots Jordan! Now I'm ready to save money for the Canon 16-35mm f/4 IS :)
I definitely recommend the lens! It makes that little bmpcc front heavey, but the IS is pretty valuable. Thanks my man, enjoyed looking through your channel!
I love your vids man. They look fantastic!
Thanks a lot! More to come soon!
Beautiful imagery. I love the BM Pocket.
I agree! I wish I could use it more, battery life is horrible.
Jordan Thiem Exactly, but it's still a gem
I'veyet to see the pocket 4k replicate this type of texture and look. Nothing close. This was well don sir. I've just sold my pocket 4k in favor of this little and still beast of a cam!
How did you stabilized your shots?
'cos is to hard to stabilize this camera, did u' use a Gimbal? a SteadyCam? or only a stabilizer lenses?
This is a great job my friend! I love it...
Beautiful work, love it!!!
Thanks Alexander! Appreciate the kind words
very professional film, thank you!
Thanks Andreas!
wow 16-35 at f/4 but with the booster brought u down to f/2 amazing, great color grade. Looks like you studied the culture and the people before grading
Nice export in 21:9 now I can watch it fullscreen on my widescreen :)
How did you stabilize the footage?
nice video..are you using the 709 luts or the log ones? i opened the folder and was like whoa lol..which ones do i use with the bmpcc 6k?
I shot the footage prores on film dynamic range so I used the log LUTS to grade
Congrats dude. You have a future as a cinematographer.
Hi Jordan! Amazing job on this, Venice stole my heart this summer and I long to go back. My favorite part is listening to the tourist restaurants play their music during dinnertime in the square, standing near the St. Marks lion, and watching the sunset and the seagulls and the soft rush of the water in the distance... I want you to know that you PERFECTLY captured that essence-- and the visual depth of the b-roll close ups (esp. @ 0:46 holy moly) and the emotion and cultural aroma they brought to the film are awesome.
One question (not about equipment either!), do you storyboard your films, or have a sort of plan of what you want to do prior to making them? I just ordered a secondhand BMPCC and a 20mm prime, and want to begin taking life and finding the story within it, and then harnessing that in a short film. I'd really love any tips on executing your creative vision, that you might be willing to share with a bright-eyed clueless amateur like me haha.
such a beautiful document
I love using mine, the picture is just great and the size is awesome. I have a few videos uploaded using it.
The shot at :45 seconds, with the visible dust particles >
Its looks beautiful
Looks like they were added in post tho
A great camera! Thanks!
I really dig the short film. It shows the capabilities of the BMPCC well. I do have a question about something in seeing in my screens on the video. I see a vertical line just left of center, most prominent around 4:41. Is that something caused by the UA-cam compression, or an issue with the sensor of the camera? It’s an in and out thing through the whole video. Is it supposed to be there?
this is insane, cant wait for the bmpc4k
This was beautifully done.
Amazing !!!
Can I ask (if you're still around YT) how much post stabilization did you add? I'm about to buy this lens for the IS and the shots in this a very very steady :)
Symon Hi Symon, I only used about 1-2% per clip to get rid of jitters (anything more looks too artificial). The lens IS is great but it will definitely take some practice to get a steady enough shot for post. Hope this helps!
@@JordanThiem Magic! Cheers, dude. Appreciate the fast response. Helps a lot :)
Pretty film and I like your story! Some footage with enough light was beautiful. Some clips seemed a little low on light. Have you tried/liked any other lenses for videography with the bmpcc? I recently bought the camera (not 4K) and looking for a lens to shoot music videos.
Thanks Swati! Most of the places that were darker were like that in real life, so I found no reason to boost shadows like a Sony would. If you are going handheld try and find an IS lens, otherwise there are just too many jitters. If you are locked off on sticks, the XEEN lenses function really well.
How much color grading was needed to produce this video.......? I could never get that much color out of my BMPCC
GREAT GREAT AMIGO! what are your NLE output settings?
