My history teacher told out class, "period films [or series] say more about the time that they are made in then the time that they are made about". Made Men is the closest thing I have seen that gets away from that.
Don's fairness and kindness face to face were great qualities. He got angry but didn't judge. He didn't hit his kids. Remember how he held baby Gene with little Sally on his knee to help her understand "he's just a baby"?
@@dlo5640 if u think about it Don helped peggy to follow her dreams and he also helped her get in the position she ended up in. she became a leader and that was because of Don. Don was nice to his family (except betty but betty was kind of a bitch against Don too and in this time the show is set in the woman must respect her man and the man was more free) so you can kinda understand his point of view. He traveled alot to LA to help his "fake" family and gave a lot of money to them because he had guilt. Don was also nice to his secretaries compared to many other men at that time, he was also a gentleman. So with that said Don was not the biggest piece of shit in that time and i would say hes a pretty decent guy
I've experienced bigger pieces of shit throughout my working life. The 60's is really not that far off. In fact, technology has changed way faster than people.
Ive followed his career maybe not super closely, but steadily over the last few years. He's always seemed like a gracious, humble, down-to-earth guy who's just happy to be doing what he's doing. Definitely hope he can get more roles on the big screen, especially after Mad Men is over.
I genuinely feel like it is one of the best shows at representing racial/political issues. So organic, realistic and reflective without having to put it front and centre with some strobe lights around it in case you missed it.
@@lol-zp1ps that's the point though, isn't it? If you look at how the attitudes were towards the elevatstaff, or how even when they have black people working in the office, the idea of a black woman working the front desk is like still the worst thing in the world to Cooper, it shows you a more realistic view of what it was like for black Americans in the working environment at that time
I really appreciate Jon Hamm answering the first question about racial and political issues that is portrayed on the show...As an African-American, I was turned-off by the show because of the "lack diversity", but I had to realize, like Jon said ,that's what happened during that time--and it wasn't pretty...Now, I'm a huge fan of the show, and any other reservations I had before about Mad Men are nonexsistent!
He was born in the 70's, so the time he really remembered was late 70's... That's at least 20 years of difference. So it's not a dumb question I believe
Alessandro - how can they maintain their concentration in what they say if they drink "real liquor." No shows or movies can allow that - remember it takes good acting to believe that is what they are drinking - so give them credit for that. Especially when Don Draper gets drunk and has too much booze - that is great acting!
This is actually the first time I've heard that the cigarettes and alcohol were fake and honestly I'm relieved to hear that because earlier I always thought that they were real and I was genuinely concerned for some of the actors' health XD
I adore this show, the first season was slow burning, building up the characters and their lives. I know when the Mad Men tile music comes on, i'm about to enjoy an hour of the best tv out there
It's confirming that he comes across as thoughtful (and considerate, I thought the interviewer was a stiff) and intelligent as he does. His role as Don/Dick is complex and convoluted, and he plays it to perfection. I don't think an actor with average intelligence, or less, could pull that off.
I think this guy's really cool. Not only is he exceedingly handsome, but he seems like a really nice guy, and he's excellent at character assessment. That English degree did him well.
You may be right @fos4242 I just watched the Suitcase S04e07 which I had missed. The episode that best demonstrates Hamm's acting prowess in my opinion! Such intense acting talent needs oodles of smarts I think, which he demonstrates here.
you should never base how good a show is by diversity. a good show is good regardless of diversity and a bad show is bad regardless of diversity. people are way too sensitive and politically correct these days. for one, like people said, diversity wouldn't work on a show based in the 60s and even if it was present time, who cares. it's not like it's racist. racism is used too lightly now. a lot of these things simply aren't racist.
I never thought a plain, white man would capture my attention ever again, but this guy is my favorite these days. And I hate these new actors and actresses today because they have no character.
Tobacco that has been chemically processed with potentially hazardous substances to taste universally uniform. Sometimes they are filtered, some are filtered, some flavored, some both, but all are incredibly bad for you. The herbal cigarettes he mentions aren't detrimental to your health, which is why they're used so much on the show as well as with smokers who have quit or are trying, such as myself.
I don't recall what ever happened with this part section of the series in which he was being interviewed by Conrad Hilton - did he get the advertisement? Can someone respond to this question?
Thanks for explaining that. It makes sense now. I just didn't understand why you would like that scene. From a girl's point of view at least, it really is stuffed with irony to overflowing. :P
Of course, who cares that someone shows ability to learn and change his/her mind, the most important thing is to point out the initial idea was stupid.
Exactly, that was reality back then and that's just what the series showing. It's not hidden behind makeup which I like. I actually became a bit upset of my friend who watch the series for the first time. She said "oohhh I dont like this programme..it's so old fashioned" and then she left cause she couldn't handle the scene were Pete ask the guy in the lift about tv's. I just felt that she tried to hide from the truth and the reality acting like that and as she's my friend it really scares me..
The second half of your confusing, dumb post contradicts directly the first half. If Hamm was born in the 70's he wouldn't have any recollection of the 50's or the 60's....so yes, it's an extraordinarily dumb question actually.
@Pickpocket actually i have every right to be upset when there isn't enough diversity on television--maintstream tv that is... especially with leading black, asian or hispanic characters on them. but as i said since i decided to put my judgement aside and actually watch the show regardless, i really enjoy the Mad Men....
His voice is like silk to me.
good lord this man
He fiiine as hell
I would add Sally to the list of brilliant female characters on the show.
And a fine actor. I actually cried at one scene - very rare for me - it was Season 4, Episode 7.
Can't imagine anyone else in the role of Don Draper.
Damn, Jon Hamm. He's the perfect Jay Gatsby in my mind.

That’s true of history in general. It’s always revisionist & says more about the current time :)
Really nice questions. no bullshit
Really glad to see this guy's career taking off. He seems to have paid his dues and has always come off as an honest, likeable, down-to-earth guy

Hello Christia
that guy is what I call a real actor
oh gawd i wanna re watch the show now!
When Jon Hamm speaks, doves cry.
Jon looks very tired and sleepy in this interview which kinda made his voice more deep and even more sexier then usual 😍damn!!! He's a turn on

I'm Peggy Olson and I want to smoke marijuana
he's so pretty...
OMG, Jon is deeeeelicious!!! And I love this show!!!! The decor, the props, the clothes and the acting. Pure genius!
silly Don Draper... thinks he's jon hamm
Nah he's Dick Whitman

You can have ham, but not Jon Hamm. Sorry !
Fantastic interview with a fantastic actor
He’s soooo talented!!!
he is handsome and i love his voice

Richard Mooney I was thinking more Batman! haha

Jon Hamm's ears are perfection itself.
i'm in the midst of watching season 6 and hearing that cigarettes and alcohol are all fake broke my heart

Is he who you play to in your mind?!
Very successful for you, Jon. Take care
i laughed when jon hamm was in rihanna and lonely island's shy ronnie 2
Handsome!
Just a quick warning, don't watch this if you're not past season 3 yet. I spoilt the end of season 3 by watching this prematurely.
1:18 "Damn, he's so good looking."
This is Bruce Wayne!
I can get behind that.
He actually says at 1:54 in the interview "The people at Herbal Ecstasy..." so there you go ;)
I think the whole "sex until marriage" thing would get in the way...

There is nothing wrong with whiteness.
Wow the first question is really hard, he looked quite nervous to answer that
O Brasil ama este homem 🇧🇷
I'm from Norfolk, VA!
Jon is a gorgeous, sexy man!!!!!
Lets just say that a sertain Comedian gets the stone rolling.
He's like a mix between Hugh Laurie and Keanu Reeves
I was waiting for them to ask him about his hazing scandal in school when he almost killed someone.
It seems that my mind and dictionary where not on the same page about reacquainted ;-). Now have a nice saturday !

I am not that into John Hamm but love Don Draper.
Jenni Case jon ham is a 100 times better, as a person. Before the enlightenment

RIP Betty (h3h3h3h3)
Paco lol wasnt expecting that
nah she can go
Playing drunk is not easy crazy good acting
He is careful, intense and serious. Not hugely different from the Don Draper character.

Weird that no one has cracked down on this. The only reason actors can't smoke real cigarettes is because of the "no smoking in the work place" law.

a wonderful actor=what a find! they are all rop notch-but o that Bobbie-like Don-something beyond the call of duty...
I heard Jon Hamm compared to Jesus and I was appalled.
Jesus would make a terrible Don Draper.
Peggy, Joan and Betty. But then when Megan takes over, all hell breaks loose.
i think hes just answering questions.
should've played Superman / Clark Kent
JESUS! What about a spoiler alert?? I am only half-way through SE1!
If he's not Don Draper he always looks like he came right out of a steam room.
OMG! he's so shy, did you notice? He makes no eye contact whatsoever. Draper is different on the show.

It's all good. Enjoy your Saturday also ;)
You're the one explaining why something was probably said, so you get my response to that possibility. That's not hard to understand, right?
i'm sure he did, but he was probably pointing out that it was stupid to feel that way about a show like this in the first place...
I'd say, lucky Jennifer!!! He's sooo handsome, and talented, sighs ;)
